02 | PLENARY SPEAKER |

Welcome to Multnomah University's 72nd annual Global Ministries Confer-ence. We are delighted that you have chosen to join us as we discover how the Gospel is reaching the nearest and farthest corners of the world through both traditional and innovative means.

We have chosen to title this year’s conference “Eternity, making the story known” because we wanted to focus on the ancient story that speaks to our most present needs.

We hope that you will be refreshed in your knowledge, understanding, and love for all that Christ has done in you and for you. Our prayer is that through the various plenary sessions and workshops you will be encouraged and enabled to share God’s story openly wherever He leads you. Whether you have been called to go or to stay, please take this opportunity to interact with the many mission representatives that are with us. Be encouraged by what God is doing around the world and take a moment to encourage those who are partners with the Gospel in uncomfortable, unfamiliar, and even hostile regions.

Global Ministries Conference

Dr. Don Richardson Author of Peace Child

Under World Team, Don Richardson has spent 15 years in missionary service among tribal peoples in Papua, Indonesia. His work amongst the cannibalistic, head-hunting Sawi people led many to Christ as he was able to communicate the Gospel through ‘redemp-tive analogies’ that he discovered in the Sawi’s cultural practices.

Richardson later became a conference speak-er and missionary statesman representing World Team. He has also authored five books including missionary classics Peace Child and Eternity in Their Hearts.

His teaching and writing ministry has spread internationally and continues to this day.

03 | WORKSHOPS |

Tuesday, February 21 | 11:00-12:15

Refugees in Our Backyard | John Michaels | TL113With all the protest and violence that has been happening in the Middle East and around the world, we've seen an in influx of refugees coming to America. Many of these refugees are from closed countries. We can’t go to them but they are coming to us. This workshop will share practical ways we can engage these refugees with the love of Christ in the Portland area.

Storying God's Word: Helping People Really Hear! | Ron Holcomb | B1"Just preach the Word!" Uhhhh, there's more to communication than that! More than 1/2 the world learns best by oral, rather than written, means. Join experienced storyer, Ron Holcomb, for a "how-to" introduction to storying God's Word. Participate in the power and emotions of "living in the Story." Learn how to share the Word in an interactive style. Storying may open new avenues to naturally sharing the Gospel.

Transformational Discipleship | Debbie Skufca | B3A transformed life provides a clear window to the power of the Gospel. Debbie will share from her experience as a missionary in Romania, about how drawing others to Jesus was a natural outcome of ongoing personal transformation.

Embracing a Relational Apologetic | Tony Kriz | L101We will be seeking to reorient our view of religious exchange, moving away from a combat model and into a cooperative model of faith debate. Spiritual communication, even opinionated communication, can actually build friendship as opposed to making enemies.

Short-term Missions with Long-term Impact | David DeVoucalla | TL114Short-term missions have great potential to spread the Gospel – if done well. David DeVoucalla will discuss biblical principles and the lessons learned by Village Schools International (www.villageschools.org) to increase the effectiveness of short-term missions. VSI has sent 117 short-term missionaries over the last seven years to live and serve in small villages in Africa.

No Missionaries Wanted or Needed | Larry Sharp | TL112In Jesus' last command – "Be my witnesses...to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8) – He is not asking for missionaries. And today more than half the world lives in countries where no missionary visas are granted. The best way for the gospel to enter is through passionate disciple-making believers to take their skill, profession, trade, business and live out the gospel in everyday life

– to be witnesses! Opportunities quickly surface to tell the good news. If the world is going to be reached in our generation, it must be done by regular people using their gifts and abilities in the everyday workplace. Come and learn why this is important and how this works.

Tuesday, February 21 | 1:30-2:45

How do You Share the Gospel with Osama? | Bill Smith | TL114 A few years ago, we moved into a local community that wouldn't touch the written Word of God. Come hear how God is opening up this tight community one story at a time.

AKA's for Alohim | Dr. Don Richardson | B1In missions history, many missionaries – proclaiming God via His biblical or even European names – have heard pagans object, "If you want our people to understand whom you are describing, you should use our name for him!" How is a missionary wary of syncretism to know if a name for God offered by pagans truly designates God? For example, is Allah, Islam's name for God, a name Christians working among Muslims may use?

Embracing a Relational Apologetic | Tony Kriz | L101We will be seeking to reorient our view of religious exchange, moving away from a combat model and into a cooperative model of faith debate. Spiritual communication, even opinionated communication, can actually build friendship as opposed to making enemies.

Devoted or Divided? | Norm & Muriel Cook | TL113Can you really do an effective job with mission work while raising well adjusted children? The Cooks will share from their own experience as a missionaries and parents as well as years of working with missionaries on and off the field.

No Missionaries Wanted or Needed | Larry Sharp | TL112In Jesus' last command – "Be my witnesses...to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8) – He is not asking for missionaries. And today more than half the world lives in countries where no missionary visas are granted. The best way for the gospel to enter is through passionate disciple-making believers to take their skill, profession, trade, business and live out the gospel in everyday life – to be witnesses! Tuesday, February 21 | 7:30-8:30

Peace Child | DVD | L101You are invited to come and witness the story of the Richardson's ministry tothe Sawi people of Irian Jaya. This film was made on location with Don andCarol Richardson and members of the Sawi tribe. It tells the story of theirjourney to a tribe that practiced cannibalism and headhunting, and theirdiscovery of culturally embedded analogies opened doors to understanding of the Gospel. It also raises important questions about risk taking andsyncretism in missions. A short discussion of these issues will follow the DVD.

Wednesday, February 22 | 11:00-12:15

Love in the Margins | Courtney Wilson | B3We have an unreached people group in every community in America – a group that hides out sometimes in fear and shame, sometimes in anger and disappointment. These are families of children with special needs, and statistics show that only 19% of families who have a child with autism area part of a faith community. In this workshop, we will talk about seeing and meeting needs in our communities for this unique group in unique ways.

Bible Storytelling: It's not Just for Kids Anymore! | Dr. Lynne Johnson | TL112Most of the world’s people acquire beliefs and behavior through stories, music, and life experience. Americans who reject statements of absolute truth are often open to engage with a story. In this workshop, Dr. Johnson will talk about why storying is an important tool for communicating the Gospel here in Portland and around the world.

Hope in the Midst of Turmoil | Hank Nagle | B1The turmoil in the Middle East has caused many to experience feelings of frustration and hopelessness. Christians are called to be messengers of hope and reconciliation. This workshop will look briefly at Islamic theology, history and nationalism in light of our calling, as well as sharing how one organization is seeking to be strategically used of God in this context.

Friend of Sinners | Daniel Fender | L101We are habitually impatient when it comes to evangelism. As products of the microwave generation we demand quick results. While we prefer microwaving God is into marinating. Instead of a quick Bible bomb or tract toss we need to follow Jesus, the King of evangelism. How can you become friends with sinners like Jesus (Matt. 11:19) without becoming friends with

06 | WORKSHOPS |

the world (James 4:4)? This will be a time to learn how to ask questions that lead others to the Gospel, how to pray for and serve your relationship networks, and how to cultivate motives that reflect the heart of God.

Pass it On: Sharing God's Story | Gary Strudler | TL114This workshop will look at how we can be creative and practical in sharing the gospel message with children. You'll also learn to tell your God story in ways that children will want to hear.

Kingdom Living in a Broken World | Carol Richardson | TL114This workshop will examine how we can live honestly in a broken world andstill thrive as Kingdom citizens. We will see how obeying the Great Commission is more than changing geography or vocation.

Wednesday, February 22 | 1:30-2:45

Bible Storytelling: It's not Just for Kids Anymore! | Dr. Lynne Johnson | TL112Most of the world’s people acquire beliefs and behavior through stories, music, and life experience. Americans who reject statements of absolute truth are often open to engage with a story. In this workshop, Dr. Johnson will talk about why storying is an important tool for communicating the Gospel here in Portland and around the world.

Seeing Past the Giants in Our Lives | Carol Richardson | TL114As Christians, we often encounter 'giant' hurdles. What can the story of Goliath help us learn about present-day 'giants'? Is it true that "God never gives us more than we can handle"? Perspective is key, but it might be more all-encompassing than you realize! Using 1 Samuel 17 as a primary text, Carol Richardson will present new considerations on an old story, with implications for workers in God's harvest fields.

Twice Cleansed | Terry Cook | B1Terry will be sharing the story of Twice Cleansed, a ministry-businessventure that created a model for church leaders and businessmen to worktogether to represent the love of Christ to those who are oppressed. Twicecleansed is a soap making project in the country of Lebanon, which wasestablished to help young women vulnerable to the sex-trafficking industryestablish a means to support themselves with dignity. Discussion will include"work" – what is it and why we do it? The first job in the garden was to tendit, resulting in accomplishment and dignity. Do you think there were any "Ihate my boss!" sentiments? By simply substituting business (which is just

Page 8: MU Global Ministries Conference

07 | WORKSHOPS |

cooperative work sometimes in an organized fashion) for work, theministry/mission aspect of business isn't nearly so scary. Perhaps, insteadof looking at business as ministry, we can think of ministry as business. With the different focus we may hear and receive the call more clearly.

Three Stories, One God | Doug Hazen & World Venture Team | TL113Listen and compare the impact of three Gospel workers taking the message to different parts of Africa. One spent her whole career in Senegal and forged life-long, redemptive relationships that are still producing results today. Another spent three years in Congo during the Rwanda genocide and discovered that the biggest story was the one God taught HIM. The third is a young gal that just returned from a year in Cote d’Ivoire and really saw God work through her and in her. In all three cases, the name of Jesus changes lives, others AND theirs.

How Big is the "I" in Evangelism? | Panel | L101Come hear a panel of faculty and students share how our individual personalities can influence both the bridges and hindrances we encounter as we seek to share the Gospel. God has designed each of us uniquely and delights to use that uniqueness for His glory. When “I” understand and experience the reality of the Gospel, “I” am most abandoned and free to share it with others.

Plenary Summary | Dr. Don Richardson | A-frame

Thursday, February 23 | 11:00-12:15

Detours on the Road to Eternity | Ben Bogle | TL114Are you willing to have your path redirected in order to make eternity known? Ben Bogle will share how God redirected his life on multiple occasions throughout his years on the field in Papua, Indonesia (formerly Irian Jaya) so that others might hear the Gospel. Hear of his calling, frustrations and testimony of God’s work in making the Gospel known to those who were ill or dying.

The Gospel Through Fire | Brian Sakultarawattn | B1 In this workshop, Brian will share how an explosion left him with third degree burns on 97% of his body. "Though I survived physically against all odds, the greater miracle was the survival of my spirit as my understanding

Page 9: MU Global Ministries Conference

08 | WORKSHOPS |

of the Gospel was deepened. I have visible burn scars, multiple amputations and I’m also blind, but through my unique circumstance I’ve been given much opportunity to share the Gospel. I believe that everyone has a unique opportunity to present the Gospel message through the circumstances we find ourselves in.”

The Power of a Blessing | Jim Morud | TL113In the Gospel of Jesus Christ, God is blessing a world that is constantly cursing Him. Your words have power to hurt or to heal. Jim Morud is a writing coach. He will show you how to craft letters for your family and friends that can be used as tools to open their hearts to God's blessings.

Shepherding Young Hearts | David Jones | B3David will discuss the strategic importance of targeting young people with the Gospel before their sensitivity to faith fades due to the harshness of life's realities. God has instilled in people a longing to know Him but typically that season of openness doesn't last. Is it any wonder why Jesus told his disciples, "Unless you change and become like little children you will never enter the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 18:3)? He will talk about practical ways to come alongside young people and point them to Jesus.

Training Christian Leaders in Hostile Regions | Dwight Ekholm | TL112Drawing on almost four decades of ministry experience behind the "Iron Curtain" and among converts from the Middle East, Dr. Dwight Ekholm will discuss principles and share examples of leadership training in allegedly "closed" countries.

Oh God, You Know... | Marshall Snider – BridgeTown Inc. | L101…A story of grace in the midst of chaos. Hear how listening to God say "wash feet here" changed the lives of a family and the lives of hundreds of others. It is a journey of relationship, discipleship and missions.

Thursday, February 23 | 1:30-2:45

Willing to Go; Called to Stay | Panel | L101Through testimonies and reflection on years of GMC involvement or interest inmissions generally, this panel will discuss some of the challenges related toa healthy perspective on Christian involvement in missions at home or abroad.

The Power of a Blessing | Jim Morud | TL113In the Gospel of Jesus Christ, God is blessing a world that is constantly

"And Jesus came and said to them, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.'" Matthew 28:18-20 ESV

cursing Him. Your words have power to hurt or to heal. Jim Morud is a writing coach. He will show you how to craft letters for your family and friends that will help to open their hearts to God's blessings.

Pioneer Church Planting | Dr. Don Richardson | B1Missionaries pioneering a new work among tribal peoples require God-given wisdom for potentially precedent-setting situations that can impact subsequent ministry. The following questions will be addressed: 1. How does one learn a tribal language well despite having no dictionary, grammar or bilingual language helper? 2. How can a "rich" missionary minister to needy people without creating an abject dependency syndrome? 3. How does one establish ties with the elders [leaders] of a culture when young single males are so readily available to help? 4. How does one disciple disciples to disciple disciples?

Sharing the Gospel Through Education | David DeVoucalla | TL112Drawing upon the experiences of Village Schools International (www.villageschools.org) over the past seven years, David DeVoucalla will discuss how the Church can respond to the greatest felt need of the rural poor – education for their children – and thereby get missionaries into villages where missionaries have never lived before.
