MTU AENA allocates tasks and responsibili-ties within a framework called a ComponentIntegrated Product Team (CIPT). CIPTs havecradle-to-grave ownership of their assignedmodule or product throughout its life cycle.CIPTs support all product life cycle phases:from concept optimization to preliminary

design; detailed design; validation and certifi-cation; and delivery, service and support. TheCIPT is responsible for execution of the pro-gram requirements for each assigned moduleor product.

CIPT members play a key role in validationand certification. MTU AENA verifies thatrequired testing has been completed for allparts and ensures that all results concur withpropulsion system requirements. MTU AENAalso ensures that certification testing is com-pleted in accordance with regulatory agencyrequirements. With the Geared Turbofan™ (GTF), MTU andPratt & Whitney are building the propulsionsystem of the future. The unique feature ofthe GTF is a reduction gear -box between thefan and the low-pressure turbine. On con -ventional engines, the two components arerigidly interconnected through a commonshaft. When they are decoupled by a gearbox,the large-diameter fan can run slower and theturbine much faster, permitting both compo-nents to operate at their best. In this manner,they greatly improve the efficiency of the GTFengine and reduce the noise it generates.
