MT. SAN JACINTO COLLEGE

Message from the Superintendent / President

MT. SAN JACINTO COLLEGE AND FOUNDATION

I recently attended a business leaders' meeting where the facilitator askedhow many in the group attended Mt. San Jacinto College. Nearly everyhand shot up. Others shouted out their connection to the college: their

child, spouse, grandparent, teacher or community leader attended MSJC.The room buzzed with excitement.

It was a proud moment for me and one that I witness or hear coming fromevery corner of MSJC's 1,700-square-mile district. With MSJC's fivedecades of education, nearly everyone knows someone who attended MSJC.

There's a reason why all of these people are eager to talk about MSJC. Theeducation provided by the college transformed their lives, the lives of theirchildren, their friends and their relatives. It provided a path and the tools toa better future.

So, it gives me an extra dose of satisfaction to share the good news in thisannual report. MSJC earned many achievements during the 2013-2014 ac-ademic year. Our students earned prestigious scholarships. The college gar-nered national, state and local recognition and awards. MSJC wasinnovative, fostered partnerships and blazed the trail as leaders.

Did you know that MSJC opened a second Veterans Resource Center? Didyou know that MSJC received national recognition for providing excep-tional service to our military veterans? Did you know that MSJC was listedamong the Top 15 percent in the nation to be recognized with the AspenPrize for Community College Excellence?

MSJC students are stand-outs, too. Once again, three MSJC students earnedthe prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship. MSJC is only one of two col-leges in the nation that can lay claim to having three students earn the awardtwo years in a row. From academics to athletics, this annual report will sharethe students’ accomplishments and success stories.

It takes an exceptional faculty to instruct, facilitate, promote and supportstudent achievement. Several accomplishments and honors the MSJC fac-ulty earned during the 2013-14 year are in this report. Remember, theseare just a few of the distinctions achieved by this dedicated group.

You will read about the fun and important events that support our students, faculty and programs. Yes, we host a Jazz and Wine Festival. Yes, we hostan elegant Gala scholarship fundraiser. Yes, we have a Motorcycle Run.Yes, we stomp our feet and chant to cheer the Eagles on at MSJC men’sand women’s athletic events. Yes, we participate in and support communityevents across our district. There is just about something for everyone atMSJC and we encourage everyone to get involved.

Our mission to provide accessible, innovative comprehensive and qualityeducation is what we do best! MSJC continues to forge partnerships so itcan provide innovative programs that will help students transfer to four-year institutions and secure jobs. In 2014, MSJC, Cal State San Marcos andthe city of Temecula settled on agreements that paved the way for the open-ing of the Temecula Higher Education Center. MSJC and CSUSM have cre-ated a program to offer students a bachelor’s degree in BusinessAdministration in just four years. The MSJC Board of Trustees also ap-proved the purchase of 80-acres in Wildomar and identified it as a futuresite for STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) programs.

MSJC offered a robust summer session and more classes in the fall than inprevious years. In fall 2014 the college offered 1,389 sections, up by 47over fall 2013. We've opened more than 44,000 seats with 9 out of 10 ofthose seats filled. Nearly 10,000 students were on a waiting list, but abouthalf of them are now in classrooms. We remain committed to serving 500students over the state funding cap. We do not get reimbursed by the statefor funding those extra students but the MSJC Board and district leadersknow this region wants and needs higher education.

The MSJC Board of Trustees adopted a $61.8 million General Fund budgetin September for the 2014-15 academic year. The unrestricted General Fundpays for operations, materials, supplies, salaries and benefits as well as themiscellaneous costs of doing business throughout the year. The District’stotal $122 million budget not only includes those items covered in the Gen-eral Fund but also restricted funds that can only be designated for specificuse and areas.

Please take time to review just some of the highlights from MSJC's facilitiesplans in the back of this report. MSJC does not currently have the fundingto implement these projects, but you will see plans to expand programs andfacilities throughout the entire 1,700-square-mile district from Banning/Beaumont to Temecula/Murrieta and sites in between. If funding is availableto implement these plans, it will help MSJC secure higher education in theregion for generations to come.

MSJC has been educating our families for 50 years. I am confident that 50years from today the MSJC Superintendent/President will attend a meetingand beam with pride when others share their connections to MSJC. Whoknows? It just may be your child or great-grandchild sharing that story.

MT. SAN JACINTO COLLEGE AND FOUNDATION

The Mt. San Jacinto College Foundation continues to show re-newed energy and improved efforts to support the College. Forthe coming year there are opportunities to participate in social ac-

Recently the Foundation held a very successful event at Baily’s in OldTown Temecula for President’s Club and Legacy Society members.Thirty-eight individuals joined President Schultz for a relaxed, informalopportunity to mingle and enjoy excellent food and beverages. Dr.Schultz was able to share some of the significant awards and achieve-ments that the college and students have received. All agreed that thisevent will serve as a blueprint for additional informal gatherings forFoundation members.

One of the major focuses of the Foundation is to provide student schol-arships. Two scholarship events take place each year, one in the Fall, the other in the Spring. At the Fall 2013 Scholarship Luncheon 72 stu-dents received $64,307 in scholarship awards. At the Spring 2014 Schol-arship Breakfast 116 students received $69,094 in scholarship awards. The MSJC Foundation was able to award a total of $320,433.53 in2013/2014 thanks to generous donors who give directly to the MSJCFoundation and outside donors, like the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation.

With the commitment of private donors and Foundation investmentsthe amount of scholarship awards continues to grow.

The Fall 2014 scholarship luncheon will be held on Thursday, Nov. 20thand the Spring 2015 and Fall 2015 Scholarship events will be held onThursday, May 21 and Thursday, Nov.19th. The Foundation is also ableto support College Staff and Faculty with grant awards to support activ-ities that improve performance that otherwise cannot be funded throughregular College funds.

The upcoming Foundation events are the very popular Sunset Jazz &Wine Fest scheduled for Friday, October 10, 2014 at the Menifee ValleyCampus. This will be an evening to honor our Veterans. The 2015 SunsetJazz & Wine Fest will be held on Friday, October 9th. The Foundation’s7th annual Gala event will again be held at Pechanga Resort and Casinoon Saturday, February 7, 2015 and will highlight student clubs and ath-letics at MSJC. FUTURE

The Future of MSJC:Mt. San Jacinto College currently serves nearly 20,000 students a year district-wide. As the communities in the district continue to grow, so will the needsfor higher education in the region. This will require new facilities and upgrades to existing locations. MSJC’s Facilities Master Plan will guide the district soit can meet those future needs. The Facilities Master Plan is based on the Educational Master Plan and considers the future educational needs of students, state funding cycles and incorporates sustainability to preserve the environment and provide for the efficient use of available resources.

The Facilities Master Plan, which received a statewide architectural award, projects the needs to accommodate student population growth by the year 2050.It is a “live” document that can change in response to new trends or circumstances. The plan can be found at www.msjc.edu/facilities

The accompanying artistic renderings show some of the buildings planned for each of MSJC’s main locations.
