Intrepid Travel Mt Kilimanjaro Porter Policy 2
Tips from climbers are recommended for good service, but guides and porters know they are discretionary and will not
hassle you for them. Tips should be distributed to each recipient personally and not just via one person such as the guide.
Tipping is always done after the climb, back in the secure environment of the operator base. Our local operator can assist
climbers with the right change.
Trek guides and senior staff
Guides must not exploit their position and in particular must not ask for or accept any form of bribes from porters (portershave been known to do this in order to gain employment). Any guide found to be doing this will be dismissed. Porters are
able to report problems in absolute confidence to the Marangu Hotel management. The head guide is responsible for the
welfare of all his staff.
Accommodation
Climbers park fees cover the cost of all porters accommodation, in either huts or tents, for the duration of the climb and
descent. No porter will have to sleep outside. The porters carry adequate bedding with them.
Loads
Porters will carry up to 15kg /33 lb of travellers luggage, not including their own food and clothing. Every porters load
is weighed at our operators base and again by the National Park, and cannot exceed 25kg. The maximum luggage that
travellers may pack to be carried by a porter is 15 kg/33 lb.
Clothing
All porters (and guides) must have their own base warm clothing and footwear. They are then issued with good quality
windproof and waterproof jackets or ponchos, hats and gloves, at the beginning of the climb, and they are collected from
them at the end. The Marangu Hotel keeps this equipment clean, serviceable and safe. No porter will be allowed to climb
unless they are suitably equipped.
Medical care
All guides and porters will be evacuated from the mountain if they become ill and will still be paid for the whole climb. All
medical bills will be paid for staff taken ill during the climb. They too may suffer from the cold and altitude sickness and
they deserve the same standard of care and treatment as climbers would expect.
Traveller awareness and behaviour
Porters and travellers will be introduced to each other by name at the start of the trek. Their job is not easy (try picking
up their load!) and a friendly relationship with travellers will help to make the journey a smoother and happier one for all.
Travellers will be given advice on how much is recommended to tip and the procedure for tipping.
