The Gulf of Tonkin Incident, or the USS Maddox

Incident, are the names given to two separate

confrontations, one actual and one now recognized

as non-existent, involving North Vietnam and the

United States in the waters of the Gulf of Tonkin.

What are the Gulf of Tonkin and the USS Maddox Incidents?

Gulf of Tonkin Resolution

The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was the

congressional response to two alleged attacks

on U.S. ships in international waters by

Vietnamese vessels.

President Johnson asked congress to support a

move to build up our troops in South Vietnam to

protect our ally from Communist incursion.

Gulf of Tonkin Resolution

This brought about the first significant move to put U.S. forces on the ground in Vietnam in a defensive role rather

than a "support & train" role.
