Placement Site Criteria

• Understanding students are in the role of a learner

• Supportive Field Instructor/Agency

• Geographically close to students

• Student must spend 50% of time in direct contact with clients

• Case assignments (6-10 clients/hours by the end of the first semester depending on foundation or concentration year)

• Uninterrupted weekly individual clinical supervision and group supervision if available.

• Conducive workplace environment

Agency Development – Foundation Year

Agency development for each student takes into consideration:

• Geographic location• Previous work experience• Expected concentration• Students’ earned degree(s)• Foreign language abilities• Special considerations

(issues with clearances, transportation, schedule, etc.)

Agency Development – Concentration Year

Agency development for each student takes into consideration:

Direct Practice

• differential assessment and diagnosis (usually biopsychosocial)

• development of appropriate treatment plans

• determination and implementation of appropriate treatment modalities

• case management services• counseling (work with individuals,

families and groups)

Fifty percent of the time in an agency setting should consist of the following direct practice activities:

Indirect Practices

Students must commit a minimum 10% of their time focusing on indirect practice activities, such as: •community work•advocacy•agency management tasks•staff development•grant writing•program evaluation•research•needs assessment•community resource assessment•inter-agency meetings•activities and policy-making analysis.

How Do I Become a USC Field Instructor?

• Must have an MSW from an accredited school of social work

• At least two years post-master’s social work experience

• Agree to complete a course for new field instructors within the first semester (online/asynchronous)

• Dedicated weekly supervisor time and commitment to the student learning experience

• Enthusiasm, patience, guidance, and support

Field Instructors Criteria

Responsibilities of the Field InstructorField Instructors are accountable for planning, implementing and evaluating the student's educational program. This includes:

• Regularly scheduled individual supervision with students for a minimum of one hour per week.

• Group supervision sessions (in agencies where there are two or more students) -- every other week for one hour.

• Assist student with the development of the Learning Agreement

• Review process recordings weekly and provide both written and verbal feedback to student.

• Complete the mid year and final evaluations of student progress in the agency.

Field Instructor Course• For experienced Field Instructors who have

completed a course from an accredited program, it is not necessary to complete the entire USC course.

• However, we do require all field instructors to take at least the first unit as an overview of the program.

• New field instructor must complete the entire USC Course.

• 12 CEUs issued on behalf of the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.

• Encourage Preceptors to take course as well!
