    A charity that grants wishes to seriously ill adults has raised more than $15,000 at a charity ball. The charity Orange Pigeon hosted the event recently at the WestWaters Hotel and Entertainment Complex, with guest appearances by The Chantoozies and The Block 2014 winners Steve ODonnell and Chantelle Ford. Orange Pigeon recipient James Hayes, who suffers from acute myeloid leukaemia, attended from Queensland to receive an $8000 Sandpiper off-road camper trailer from Swag Camper Trailers.     Gong for library hub Melton Library and Learning Hub has taken on an added allure as winner of the Victorian Institute of Architects Sustainability Award. The Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp-designed building was recognised at a ceremony on June 20. This award acknowledges the thought and innovation that went into the sustainable design and build of this tremendous community asset, Melton mayor Bob Turner said. The hub is an outstanding building that enhances civic pride and will service our community for many years to come.

    Award nominationsFour Melton submissions have been named as finalists in this years Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria Sustainable Cities awards. Toolern Vale Primary School was nominated in the active school category for its birdwatching, garden and cooking programs. Pinkerton Landcare group and Western Water were listed in the environment protection section for an outdoor classroom on the Werribee River. Melton Family History Group and the Melton Library and Learning Hub are also among this years finalists. The awards will be announced on August 1.

    New globes to save energyMelton council will replace about 3800 streetlights with new, energy-efficient technology thats about 60 per cent more efficient than existing globes. The $1.73 million streetlight program is part of a council plan to reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions.

    The Zonta Club of Melton Inc. has teamed up with Womens Health West to deliver vital support packs for women fleeing from domestic violence.

    The Zonta Club has been active in raising funds for the care packages made up of essential products and toiletries, with separate packs made especially for pregnant women and their babies.

    Chairwoman of the service committee Margaret Hinks said the club had wanted to help Melton victims of domestic violence, and it approached Womens Health West to team up for the new project.

    Ms Hinks said Zonta promoted itself as an organisation committed to advancing the status of women through service and advocacy, and it took on a range of community projects and initiatives helping women and young girls.

    Womens Health West chief executive Robyn Gregory said the organisation had seen an enormous increase in police referrals for family violence over the years, increasing from 2986 in 2011-12 to a staggering 4025 referrals during 2012-13.

    Women and children are often forced to flee their homes with little more than the clothes on their backs, Dr Gregory said.

    Womens Health West provides women and their children with crisis support such as court support, crisis housing and case management as well as womens and childrens counselling.

    The countdown is on for Bacchus Marsh residents to make the switch to the National Broadband Network, with current copper services ready for the chopping board.

    It has been two years since the NBN was launched in Bacchus Marsh and it will now become a complete part of the community with all residents and business owners urged to make the switch by October.

    Come October 5, parts of Bacchus Marsh will be cut off from the current copper services and NBN Co general manager external affairs Trent Williams said NBN Co was keen not to leave anybody behind.

    Mr Williams said residents needed to be aware that the switch to NBN was not automatic and some planning and co-ordination would be involved to smooth the transition.

    Mr Williams said the cut-off would affect all services including home phones, and residents wishing to continue using landline phones and internet services needed to make the change.

    Residents using medical alarms were being reminded to organise to switch.

    Its literally a matter of comparing apples with oranges for youngsters taking part in Melton councils new Healthy Children Growing Together program. The well-being initiative, launched on July 1, includes nutrition workshops, walking school buses and breakfast programs to promote healthy eating and living habits for families. Melton mayor Bob Turner said the citys poor adult health statistics sparked the campaign. The habits of adults are often passed onto their children, Cr Turner said. By creating supportive environments for health, strengthening community action on healthy living and developing strong policies, the project will enhance community wellbeing now and into the future.     An exhibition honouring the role of indigenous Australian servicemen and women in World War I was part of Moorabools NAIDOC (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee) event, highlighting the contribution of our native citizens. Its about celebrating the sacrifice and courage of all Australians who went to war, said Great War Centenary Committee member Katrina Bradfield. The display was compiled by the Great War Centenary Committee, advised by local indigenous groups, Moorabool council and Djerriwarrh Health Services. On July 4, a flag raising ceremony signalled the start of NAIDOC celebrations in Ballan, which was followed by a morning tea in the council chambers.     Volunteers really are the lifeblood of our community. Many local groups, sporting clubs and support organisations just couldnt exist if not for the generosity of spirit and can-do attitudes of our local volunteers. Which is why it gave me such pleasure, recently, to attend Councils Share event, where this

    years Annual Community Grants program recipients were announced.

    Council awarded over $167,800 in grant funding to 26 groups to support programs residents in need and get some truly worthwhile initiatives off the ground.

    It was marvellous to see so many people attend the Share event and celebrate the achievements of our grass-roots organisations. We all enjoyed the positive messages relayed by guest speaker, Peter Kenyon, founder and Director of Bank of I.D.E.A.S., who inspired us to look at the glass as half full, rather than half empty.

    Id love to see more residents get involved with local community groups. Its a great way to give something positive back, meet new people and feel a real sense of achievement.

    In the lead up to the November State election, City of Melton residents will have the opportunity to voice their concerns over funding inadequacies for interface Councils, at a community meeting on Monday 14 July. The meeting, hosted by Interface Councils, encourages residents to identify the top three issues faced by people living in the outer suburbs.

    As a Councillor, I encourage residents to have their say and send a clear message to the State Government and the opposition about how important it is that Interface Councils like Melton receive adequate funding for programs and infrastructure.     A gentle rain was falling at Digman Reserve, Newport, when a 194-centimetre behemoth batsman scored 90 off 30 balls then bowled gentle off-spin to a 12-year-old schoolboy.

    Welcome to the open-age, enthusiastically multicultural Mid-Year Cricket Associations fifth annual competition.

    Played from noon to 4.45pm on Saturdays on reliably green synthetic wickets usually surrounded by mud, the nine-week competition is for a growing army for which too much cricket isnt enough.

    About half of the 1400 players enlisted in 70 teams occupying four divisions across mainly the north and western suburbs are from the subcontinent where, famously, the game is played and watched with a quasi-religious fervour.

    The growth has been startling since MYCAs initial year, 2010, whennine teams filled a single division in the carefully named mid-year association, winter having being eschewed for its negative connotations.

    Winter players of 2014 are sensible dressers; hoodies are allowed, even encouraged. But they must be uniformly coloured, so if one players in orange, theyre all in orange, a motley crew of a dozen umpires (of which this writer was one) was instructed amid the oak panelling and historic photos of Cricket Victorias boardroom in Jolimont.

    This writer prepared to duck or fling himself to the turf as the aforementioned behemoth batsman, South Australia-contractedallrounder Trent Lawford, laid waste to some rather ordinary, even damp-squid, bowling.

    The straight sixes of Lawford were of a frightening velocity. Never in the hunt for

    its288 target, Gellibrand sent in Ryan Caiger, aged 12, at No.11 to fight arearguard action.

    With the Wyndhamvale bowlers halving their pace, Craiger, not much taller than his bat, took a single to mid-off and retired not out as Gellibrand succumbed for 128.

    The conquering Wyndhamvale side had hit 25 sixes.

    While sodden outfields require boundaries to be cleared on the full or first bounce, winter cricket can also cause players to be painfully grounded. Last year, a pace bowler did the splits as his front foot skidded on a slippery synthetic surface. While his teammates

    celebrated a win, he lay on a hospital bed nursing torn adductor muscle fibres.

    An unwritten rule governing the mid-year comp is to come off the ground if its dangerous or anyone drowns. The matches are played for fun. Whyelse would you play in the rain? When stumps approached at Newport, a catch-cry was, Cmon on, guys, its beer oclock.

    Mid-year cricket was started by sports innovator and former motel owner-operator John Hammer of Brighton. In 1980, Hammer devised asuper-rules football competition for retired players in four age groupings, from over-35s to over-50s.

    In 2003, Hammer, now 78, launched an over-60s Victorian competition for fellow cricket tragics.

    Although most of the competitions players also bat and bowl in summer, a few are neophytes.

    Strathmore Heights Cricket Club secretary Stephen Fielding never much liked cricket as a young man, but when histwo sons took up the game at school he joined summer cricket at the ageof 42.

    Now, at 58, hes a wicketkeeper and is chuffed that he holds his clubs (summer and winter comp) record for most stumpings 64.

    Rights and ObligationsEveryone has an obligation to pay tax according to what they earn. While most people try to do the right thing in paying their tax, some fi nd it diffi cult to stay on track with their tax obligations.

    The Australian Taxation Offi ce launched a campaign earlier this year to help Australian businesses meet their tax obligations.

    The social media and promotional campaign provides business owners with practical tips to increase awareness of their tax rights and obligations and make it easier to comply.

    The best tips are: Avoid penalties and interest by lodging and paying on time and

    contact the ATO if you cant pay on time.

    Keep the GST you collect separate from your business account.

    Check your systems and records are in order to avoid mistakes on your BAS.

    Keep all records electronically.

    Use the ATOs business viability tool on ato.gov.au to help assess the fi nancial performance of your business. Avoid the paper shuf ing and lodge your BAS online.

    Many people overestimate the size of the problem. Businesses might miss an activity statement payment, then fi nd themselves

    with a debt that grows with general interest charge (GIC). Some people end up with a debt if they havent put enough money aside from interest they receive on savings or from the sale of property.

    The simplest way for you to manage your tax is to pay on time. There are a range of services and tools to help you avoid falling into debt.

    When people fall behind with their tax payments, the ATO can help case-by-case based on their individual circumstances, including their payment and lodgment compliance history.

    If you make a payment arrangement, keep to it and dont ignore your payment obligations. The ATO will use stronger measures such as garnishee action to collect the debt or it may take legal action to ensure the correct tax is paid.
