Compensation
8. The Firearms (Amendment) (No. 2) Act 1997makes provision for compensation paymentsto be made to those who owned a smallcalibre pistol by virtue of a firearm certificateon or immediately before 14 May 1997, andwho surrender it to the police. The police will
be writing separately with further details tothose eligible.
Non prohibited firearms
9. The exemption from the need to have acertificate to possess non prohibited firearms(e.g. rifles and shot guns) as part of a shipsequipment will continue.
10. Since the issue of MSN 1685 (M+F) severalqueries have been raised regarding the
carriage of firearms on board ships for use inthe control of animals. All handguns are nowprohibited but, where they are required solelyfor the humane killing of animals they maycontinue to be held. This exemption onlyapplies to those handguns which are held on afirearm certificate which bears a conditionrestricting use of the handgun to the humanekilling of animals. Although these guns may
have been held as ships equipment without alicence until now, a firearm certificate is nowrequired and may be obtained from your localpolice.
