The MScom lecture series brings international experts to Switzerland to speak on com-munication topics linked to best-in-class management practices. In addition to raisingawareness of communications as a core competency in today’s business environment, thepresentations and discussions are designed to forge closer links between academic rese-arch and corporate practice. The lecture series, which takes place twice per year and ishosted by major multinational companies in Switzerland, also offers a valuable networ-king opportunity for professionals.

The Executive Master of Science in Communications Management (MScom) is a part-time, postgraduate program for experienced communications professionals. Asone of the first of its kind, MScom was founded in 1999 as part of the post-graduate stu-dies program offered at the University of Lugano, Switzerland. Courses are conducted inEnglish over a 21-month period. An international faculty of more than 30 professors fromrenowned institutions around the world ensures the program's academic excellence andits multi-national orientation. MScom cooperates with Copenhagen Business School onprogram content and joint sessions, including the summer session at the UCLA AndersonSchool of Management, Los Angeles, one of the leading business schools in the US.

The HarbourClub is a Swiss association of Chief Communications Officers. Its mission isto foster the professionalization of Corporate Communications through know-how ex-change among leading professionals, to engage in the discussion of current and futurechallenges and to offer its members an exclusive networking platform.

Director of UCLA Anderson's Business and Information Technologies (BIT) Project, Pro-fessor Uday Karmarkar, studies the ways new online information and communicationaffect business practices worldwide. He foresees radical changes in the way informationis created, disseminated and consumed. His conclusions are based on the BIT surveythat is being conducted on technology use in ten countries in different regions of theworld.

Based on his research and professional experience, Professor Uday Karmarkar will raiseseveral key questions to help businesses more successfully navigate the changes:

What will be the impact of new technologies on media and communications?

How will media channels and consumer appliances converge?

Which threats and opportunities will arise from these new trends and the changing competitive landscape?

What are the fundamental changes in the way content will be created, distributed and consumed?

Will we see outsourcing and off-shoring of media jobs?

Which core competencies must be developed to meet the demands of future consumers?

Times Chair in Technology and Strategy,UCLA Anderson School of Management, Los Angeles, USAProfessor Uday Karmarkar is the founder and Director of UCLA Anderson's Business andInformation Technologies (BIT) Global Network, which studies the impacts of new in-formation and online communication technologies on business practices worldwidewith 18 research partners in 15 countries.

Uday Karmarkar joined UCLA in 1994 after teaching at the Graduate School of Businessat the University of Chicago (1975-1979) and the Simon School at the University of Ro-chester (1979-1994).

He has published over 70 research papers and articles, has founded two academic jour-nals and is on several editorial boards.

His research interests include the information economy and e-business, technology ma-nagement, manufacturing and service strategy, and performance-centered organiza-tion. Recent BIT sector studies have addressed financial services, electronic health carerecords and the retail distribution of video products and services.

He has undertaken research and consulting projects for a wide array of companies inthe United States, Europe and Asia including the Aditya Birla Group, Eastman Kodak,Ford, GM, Hindustan Lever, IBM, Thomson Publishing (several companies) and Xerox.

Professor Karmarkar holds a B.Tech. from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay,and a Ph.D. in Management Science from M.I.T. He serves on the Board of Directors ofthe IITB Heritage Fund, and is on advisory and directors boards of new technology andtraditional companies. He has received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from IITB,and an IBM Faculty Research award in 2004.
