This is an ideal course for nurses or allied health professionals, either in specialist or generalist roles, with an interest in caring for patients with cancer. Acute OncologyThis unit aims to improve your management of the unexpected care needs of patients with cancer. You will advance your skills and performance in challenging situations and learn to handle acutely unwell patients.

RadiotherapyThe unit will cover all forms of radiotherapy: intensity modulated radiotherapy, SABR and VMAT, proton and carbon beam therapy, passive scattering and pencil beam scanning. The unit will also provide an overview of the outstanding challenges in radiotherapy and how these are being addressed through research.

Assessment and FeedbackThis unit will enable you to understand assessment theory and how this can be put into practice, bearing in mind concepts of validity, reliability, transparency and professional accountability.

Colorectal CancerDevelop and apply the knowledge and skills to care for patients with colorectal cancer. The emphasis is on critical thinking and its application, leading to the advancement of specialist practice. This unit is structured to allow health care professionals to remain in their own areas of practice.

Critical Appraisal and Evidence SynthesisAcquire practical skills in applying methods of evidence synthesis as a means of informing health and social care policy, practice and research.

Evidence Based Teaching and LearningExperiment with the design and planning of your teaching and learning and explore learning technologies and how they may be applied in a critically informed manner to enhance learning.

Curriculum Development and Teaching MethodologyEvaluate different teaching methods, develop your reflective approach to your teaching practice and improve your knowledge and understanding of teaching and learning issues in higher education.

Developing Practice, Managing ChangeGain the knowledge and skills to critically evaluate your area of practice and organisational contexts, and identify areas for potential development, re-design and innovation.

Effective Strategies for Advanced CommunicationsYou will develop advanced communication skills and improve the way in which you manage complex and challenging situations, eg do not attempt resuscitation (D.N.A.R), advanced care planning, handling anger and distress, breaking bad news, and confronting colleagues.

Foundations in Cancer CareThe unit is designed to enable students to advance their knowledge and understanding in relation to caring for patients with cancer and their families and to critically consider the impact of contemporary health care systems on cancer care. The unit follows four themes pertinent to cancer care namely, understanding cancer; supportive and palliative care; professional issues, organizational issues.

Gynaecological CancersDevelop your knowledge and skills in caring for gynaecological cancer patients at any stage in their disease pathway.  Main themes include: epidemiology diagnoses; treatment options; support and care during treatment; Living with and Beyond Cancer (LWBC) and palliative/end of life issues.

Introduction to Reflective Teaching and Learning PracticeThis unit will introduce you to current theoretical concepts in teaching and learning and will provide you with skills evaluate your own teaching. You will learn through completing study tasks, independent study and peer learning.

Lung CancerThis unit is taught by expert clinicians and aims to provide the most up to date information on lung cancer treatments and developments within respiratory critical care.

Managing Research in the Clinical SettingDevelop your practical skills to ensure effective management of research projects within a clinical setting. You will also become familiar with ethical governance standards and improve skills in critical evaluation.

Principles and Practice of Breast CareBreast cancer affects 1 in 9 women in the UK. Extend and integrate your existing knowledge and skills in relation to delivering care to patients and discuss current treatments alongside broader concepts such as rehabilitation, health promotion and quality of life issues.

Principles of Haematology OncologyDevelop an understanding of the pathophysiology and aetiological factors of haematological malignancies. Critically examine current practice and develop knowledge and skills required for service delivery improvements.

Promoting Effective Practice in Supportive and Palliative CareSupportive and palliative care is an emerging specialism. This unit will provide practitioners with advanced decision making skills and an enhanced understanding of the complex professional issues related to the care of adults living with progressive, life limiting illness, as well as to their families.

Public Health and CancerThis unit has been developed in response to contemporary requirements for cancer prevention, and is designed to inform the delivery of public health at a local community, national and international level. The unit will address the political nature of public health, and the need to explore new models of working, including an increasing emphasis of health, promotion and disease prevention.

Qualitative Design and AnalysisExamine qualitative research in greater depth to improve your knowledge, skills and understanding of the processes and methods.

Quantitative Design and AnalysisYou will critically examine key concepts, designs and methods relevant to a range of different types of quantitative research to improve your skills and knowledge in this area.

Research DesignThis unit explores the principles that guide identification of researchable questions and demonstrates how to form appropriate research designs and methods.

Delivery of Systemic Anti-cancer Therapies for Solid Tumour Malignancies This unit is designed to enable you to develop your knowledge and skills in caring for patients receiving systemic anti-cancer therapies. It is structured to allow health professionals caring for individuals with solid tumour cancers to review and modify their own area of practice. Themes include: treatment options and side effects; educational needs of patients and staff; physical and psychological needs of the patient; service delivery and strategic development.

Urological CancersThis unit will explore the diagnostic and treatment pathways of a range of urological cancers including: bladder, kidney, penile and prostate. The management of immediate and longer term side effects will be explored, alongside the impact of these on a patient’s quality of life.

DissertationFor those completing the full MSc qualification a dissertation is compulsory.
