Signalanalysisandprocessingplaysanimportantroleinintegratedelectronicsystems,beingcrucialtotheacquisitionofsignalsandtheextractionandinterpretationtheinformationthatthesignalsarepresumedtocarry.
Signalprocessingisalsousedtointerpretthenatureofphysicalprocessesbasedontheobservationofeitherasignalorthemannerinwhichtheprocessaltersthecharacteristicsofasignal.Electricalengineerswhospecialiseinsignals&systemsdesignanddevelopelectronicsystemsoverawiderangeofapplications.Examplesincludethedevelopmentofmedicalequipment,wirelesscommunicationsystems,radarandremote-sensingsystems,largeantennaarraysforradioastronomyandcontrolsystems
TheMasterofScienceprogrammeinElectricalEngineeringatTUDelftoffersthetrackSignalsandSystems.InthisMSctrack,youwillbetrainedtodevelopandapplytheoryandalgorithmsinthebroadfieldofsignalprocessingandsystemdesign.Theprogrammeoffersyouthepossibilitytospecialisemorespecificallyinanyofseveralparticularaspectsofsignalprocessing,includingmultimedia,communications,biomedical,remotesensing&radarsystemsandforcontrolsystems.Theprogrammestartsbyprovidingstudentswithasolidfoundationandinthesecondsemesteryouwilllearnaboutparameterestimationanddetection.Whenselectingcoursesandagraduationproject,youcanchooseoutofseveralspecialisations.GraduationworkcanbedoneeitheratDelftUniversity,orinindustryandother(international)universities.

WhensearchingaMaster’sprogramme,Iwaslookingforacombinationbetweentheoreticalmathematicsandappliedscience.AsIlikedElectricalEngineering,IlookedintothatfieldanddiscoveredthattheSignal&Systemstrackmeetstheperfectcombinationbetweentheoryandpractice.Thetrackcoversmanyfieldssuchasradarsystems,acoustics,andcommunications.Aspartofmyinternshipandgraduationwork,Ihadtheopportunitytodoresearchattwocompanies:ThalesandBang&Olufsen.Duringthisresearchperiod,Iworkedwithtwodifferentfields:
radarandacoustics.Itwasamazingtoseehowthemodelsandalgorithmsusedinbothfieldswerequitesimilar.IreallylearnedalotduringmytimeintheR&Ddepartmentsofbothcompanies,anditprovidedagoodinsightintodifferentcareerprospectsaswell.Youneverknowifyouaremakingarightdecision,evennotwhenitcomestochoosingaMaster’sprogramme.However,Iwoulddefinitelysay‘no’ifyouaskmeifIwouldhavechosendifferently.TheSignalandSystemprogrammehasopenedmanydoorsforme,nationallyaswellasinternationally.

AudioandAcousticSignalProcessingfocusesonsuchtopicsasmultimediadatacompression,audio/speechprocessing,distributedsignalprocessing,andsignalprocessingforsensornetworks.Theresearchandcourseworkcoverabroadscopeoftheoryandalgorithmsinsignalprocessingandinformationtheory.
SignalProcessingforCommunicationsfocusesonsuchtopicsasstatisticalsignalprocessing,arrayprocessinganddistributedsignalprocessing.Itprovidesawiderangeofcomputationaltoolsandalgorithms.Applicationsarerelatedto
wirelesscommunications,underwatercommunicationandsensornetworks,aswellastolargesensorarraysforradioastronomyandgeophysics.
BiomedicalSignalProcessingfocusesonsignalprocessingfortheacquisition,modelling,analysisandprocessingofbiomedicalsignals.Thesecanbenaturalsignalsfromthebody–aswithsignalsmeasuredintheheartorbrain(EEG,ECG)–ormultichannelsignalsfromimagingsystems(e.g.ultrasound,MRIorphotoacousticimaging).
SignalProcessingforRemoteSensingandRadarSystemsfocusesonmicrowavesystemdesign,analogueanddigitalprocessingofmicrowavesignals,signalprocessingfortypicalremote
sensingapplications(antennaarraypatternsynthesis;space-timeadaptivesignalprocessinginultra-widebandarrays;detectionandfeatureextraction;trackingandnavigation;classification,andimaging)thatareperformedateitherasinglenodeoratadistributedsensing.
SystemsandControlfocusesonthedevelopmentofmathematicalmodelsofcomplexdynamicsystems,aswellasontheuseofthesemodelstooptimise/controltheirbehaviourinfeed-forwardandfeedbackconfigurations.Thestrengthoffeedbackcontrolrestsinitscapacityfordealingwithuncertainty.Thismakesitpossibletodesignlow-complexitycontrollersforachievinghighperformanceincontrolledcomplexsystems.

Recentdevelopmentsintechnologicalcapabilitieshavemademicrowavesensingaffordableforamassmarket.Inadditiontoitsapplicationinmeteorologicalinstitutesandotherprofessionalusers,microwavesensingcanbefoundincollisionavoidanceradarsystemsincarsandinfoodcontrol.Thesystem-designparadigmhasshiftedfromcomplex,stand-alonesystemstodistributedsystemsofwirelesslyconnectedlow-functionalitysensors.Ithasalsoshiftedfrommono-functionalwirelesssystems(e.g.communications,radarandnavigation)tomultifunctionalones.Thisshifthastriggeredintensiveresearchonresourceallocation,distributedsignalprocessingandcapabilitymanagementinsuchsystems.TheMicrowaveSensinggroupfocusesonelectromagneticmodellingandtheoptimalselectionofsensingwaveforms.Inourresearchprojects,wecollaboratecloselywithsignalprocessingspecialistsandRFtechnologygroups.Weapplytheresearchinareasurveillance,crowdmonitoring,landminedetection,concealed-weapondetection,weatherpredictionandcivilengineering(subsurfacesensing).StudentsenrolledintheSignalsandSystemgrouphaveaccesstostate-ofthe-artexperimentalresearchfacilities,includingelectromagneticlaboratoriesandamulti-mediasignallaboratory,aswellassoftware-definedandultra-widebandradarsystemslocatedinDelftandCabauw.
