Our MissionMill Springs Academy is a values-based educational community dedicated to the academic, physical and social growth of those students who have not realized their potential in traditional classroom settings.

Our HistoryMill Springs Academy was started in 1981, when Tweetie Moore founded the school that was to become the destination for hundreds of children. It was called The New

School and was housed in the Sandy Springs home and artist’s studio of Ed Dodd, Creator of Mark Trail comic strip. Tweetie assembled a team of talented teachers who knew how to create a safe environment for children whose unique learning styles could not be met in traditional public or private schools. The school provided each child with opportunities to learn and to grow academically, socially and emotionally. Students came to understand their responsibilities as learners and as members of their classrooms and school communities. Children succeeded in this school…many for the first time in their lives!

Our FutureFor over 30 years Mill Springs has responded to the community’s need for an alternative education environment with enrollment steadily growing to accommodate the increasing number of families whose children both need and thrive in our programs. For example, since moving in 1997 to our current campus in Alpharetta with 135 students, enrollment has more than doubled to roughly 340 students. As Mill Springs continues to reach and exceed its yearly enrollment goals, the school’s leadership is confident that it is in a good financial position to mount another capital campaign as it carries no debt and receives excellent financial and participatory support from the school’s stakeholders (parents, grandparents, Board of Trustees, Staff/Faculty, and friends of MSA) through its Annual Fund and other fundraising efforts. Therefore the next phase of capital development will focus on completing the school’s permanent classroom facilities while also re-routing the main road to create a pedestrian-friendly campus.

Our NeedPermanent Lower/middLe SchooL and reconfigured roadway

The 17 year-old modulars used for the Lower and Middle Schools are at the end of their lifespan and filled to capacity in most grades. Additionally, Mill Springs’ Middle School program continues to be the primary entry point and engine of the school with the 5th and 6th grades alone having more new students than any other grade. With a permanent building and more classroom space, the Lower and Middle Schools will be shored up to not only maintain the school’s enrollment numbers but also drive growth through the matriculation of students into the PreUpper School (7th and 8th grades) and Upper School respectively.

The single roadway originally constructed to access the campus now bisects it as permanent buildings have been constructed over the past 16 years to accommodate growth. Current parking is inadequate and the road system is no longer pedestrian friendly. As we look to build the last of our permanent classroom facilities it is now necessary to re-route our road system to the east side of the campus and also expand areas for parking.

NOTE: Several temporary buildings will continue to be used as space for administrative offices, IT equipment and staff, library/media center; as well as house some Fine Arts programs.

Mill Springs Academy has always been led by visionary thinkers. When Headmaster Robert Moore seized the opportunity to move to Alpharetta, he recognized the great potential for growth on the 85-acre property. While most of the acreage is in a flood plain unsuitable for construction of permanent buildings, this part of the property contributes to the natural beauty of the campus and has already proved to be an invaluable resource for the school’s competitive athletic programs as well as the community at large.
