    METHOD STATEMENT FOR BITUMINOUS PRIME COAT

    Purpose

    To detail the methods adopted with regard to application of Bituminous

    Prime Coat on to the Aggregate Base Course layers, prior to laying of

    asphaltic road construction layers.

    Scope of work

    i. Cleaning of surface to ABC layersii. Application of Bituminous Prime Coat

    Reference Documents :

    A-974 (Cutback Asphalt, MC-250)

    Inspection & Testing

    i. Inspection & Testing of raw materials shall be done in accordance withSaudi Aramco Product Specifications A-973 (Cutback Asphalt, MC-70)

    A-974 (Cutback Asphalt, MC-250), and application by site testing for

    determination of spread rate.

    ii. Prime coat shall be tested prior to applications and every 10,000 m.

    Preparation

    i. All materials shall be submitted to the SAPMTs Representative forapproval with supporting documentation, prior to them being used on

    site. No material will be used on site prior to receiving the above-

    mentioned approvals.

    ii. Ensure that all the previous construction layers have been tested, andsubsequently approved, by the SAPMTs representative prior to the

    application of any Bituminous Prime Coat.

    iii. All surfaces to be primed shall be thoroughly cleaned from foreignmaterials by blowing compressed air or hand brushing, immediately

    prior to the bituminous application, and in any case, not more than two

    hours before.

    iv. If the surface to receive the Bitumen Prime Coat is excessively dry, itshall be lightly dampen with water in advance of the application of

    prime coat. If too much water is applied, and ponding occurs, then the

    surface will be allowed to dry naturally before any bituminous

    application will be done.

    Method

    i. All Bituminous Prime Coat material(MC-70) shall be applied bymeans of a purpose built mechanical spray tank distributor, or by

    pressure hand spray. Application temperatures will be between 50 C

    to 80 C and the rate of application will not be less than 0.65 litres/m

    2

    times, the temperature of the prime coat material shall be maintained

    at least 10C below the flash point of the material

    ii. Prior to the first application of the Bituminous Prime Coat on theproject, a rate of spray trial shall be done to determine the penetration,

    and at each successive application, a test of the spray rate will be

    undertaken to ensure that the distributor is correctly working and the

    coverage rate is achieved.

    iii. The prime coat shall be permitted to cure until the penetration intounderlying surface has been approved by Saudi Aramco

    Representative, but at no time shall the curing period be less than 24

    hours. Ponding will be avoided and shall be removed immediately if

    occurring.

    iv. Wherever there are adjacent items, such as concrete barriers, kerbstones, gutters, and the like, precautions shall be taken to prevent the

    Bituminous Prime Coat from being sprayed on to them. Where

    necessary, hand spraying of the Prime Coat will be done in localized

    areas.

    v. Bituminous primer will not be applied in adverse weather conditionssuch as sand storm and rain.

    vi. Temporary barricades and warning signs shall be erected around areaof sprayed Bituminous Prime Coat to prevent any vehicle access on to

    the newly primed surface. Any area where prime coat is disturbed

    shall be repaired to the satisfaction of SAPMT's representative.

    vii. Overlapping shall not be permitted at transverse joints and thick papershall be used to protect the previous application.

    viii. The prime coat materials shall be applied to a width of 300 mmgreater on each side of the road than the specified width of thefinished surface

    ix. Priming will not be permitted when surface is wet.x. After the cleaning operations, prior to the application of primer, a

    joint inspection shall be conducted.

    xi. A trial run shall be conducted prior to start the actual work.Equipment:

    The following equipments are to be utilized for this purpose:

    i. Air Compressorii. Bitumen Spray Tanker

    Health & Safety:

    All operations will be carried out in a safe working manner, and in each &

    every case, the practices adopted shall be fully in accordance with Saudi

    Aramco Construction Safety manual.
