Arrangement:

The Dayton Bicycle Club Records is arranged into four series:

Series I: Correspondence, 1890-1897, 1915-1926

Series II: Operations, 1897, undated

Series III: Receipts, 1889-1927

Series IV: Financial Records, 1890, 1913-1925

Historical Note:

The Dayton Bicycle Club was established in 1884 as an all-male bicycling organization. The

club evolved from a bicycle club sometime in the first two decades of the 20th century into an

exclusive business and philanthropy club. The organization continues to exist today as a social

club headquartered in the historic Edwin Smith House at 131 West Third Street in Dayton.

Scope and Content:

The collection contains a varied assortment of receipts relating to the club’s purchases,

correspondence relating to relationships with other organizations about arranging bicycle races in

the Dayton Area, and limited records relating to the administration, operations, and general

finances of the club.

Page 3: MS-530, Dayton Bicycle Club Records Collection Number

MS-530: Dayton Bicycle Club Records 3

Series I: Correspondence contains letters and telegrams relating to club business. Many of the

letters discuss organization of bicycle races, sanctioning of bicycle races that both took place

under the club’s prevue and those that didn’t, and confirming when riders from outside the

Dayton area would be participating. This series also contains letters relating to memberships at

the club and a letter relating to an audit of the club’s finances and recordkeeping.

Series II: Operations contains: a limited list of club members; a list of racers from an unknown

race and their handicaps; three broadside scorecards from local races listing race participants,

prizes, and local advertisements; and two flyers for local races.

Series III: Receipts is the bulk of the collection. This series contains receipts dating from 1889

to 1927 from approximately 500 business and/or individuals with whom the club did business.

Some notable Dayton area businesses include: Kroger, Dayton Daily News, the Green & Green

Co., Krug Bakery, the Elder & Johnston Co., Lowe Bros., Kiefaber’s, and Miami Valley

Hospital. This series is arranged alphabetically by the vendor name as it appears on the receipt.

Series IV: Financial Records contains limited petty cash, payroll, and tax records for the club

from 1913 to 1925. Included in this series is special taxation records for war taxes from World

War I, and an original contract with the Dayton Natural Gas Company from 1890.
