21st Century ClassroomWhat?Students need to learn beyond the core subjects of language arts, math, and history. They also need to master skills like creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, and digital literacy – skills they will need in order to be successful in the 21st century.

How?Project-based learning experiences that involve creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, and digital literacy. (Computers, tablets, mp3 players, etc.)

Classroom ManagementWithin the classroom every student has a clip that always starts on Great Day. Below are the rewards and consequences that go with clip movement

Morning Arrival

Please plan for your child to arrive no sooner than 7:::00 a.m. This is the earliest that the gates are unlocked and supervision is provided.

Before school, students are to drop off their backpacks by the classroom door and then go to the cafeteria or to the playground.

Math Curriculum

During this time we work on many important 2nd grade math

concepts such as:

Measurement, number concepts, graphing, problem solving, addition/subtraction, time,

money, geometry, etc.

ReadingIn order to best meet the varied

literacy needs of our 2nd graders our students will be engaged in Guided

Reading centers. Students will be assessed to determine their reading levels, and placed in flexible groups based on the

skills that are needed. Students will be practicing different stories and

skills, and the activities will be differentiated to re-teach, reinforce,

and to enrich.

Recess2nd grade students may eat snacks at the first recess. They must sit in

a designated area if they are eating. They play on the

playground once their food is consumed.

All teachers expect them to be following Champ’s Code of

Conduct, which can be found in the student handbook.

WritingWe will be using Step Up to

Writing in conjunction with the RCD curriculum designed by

Hemet Unified. During writing we work on

refining our penmanship, spelling, organization, and grammar skills. You can help by encouraging students to take pride in their work and by trying

to do it neatly the first time.

Students may bring lunch from home or purchase lunch from the

cafeteria. The applications for free/reduced lunches are available

on our school website or in the office. Students may play for 20 minutes on the playground after

they eat.

MathWe are fully implementing the Common Core Math Standards this year. 2nd graders will work

extensively on developing number sense, including + & -, <

= >, etc.We also do a daily timed math

drill, which is a page of 40 addition and subtraction facts that students have to pass to move to the next level and ultimately earn a trip to the

treasure chest.

Computer Lab We will visit the computer lab 2-3 times per

week. While there, we work on reading, writing, and math programs.

Compass Odyssey is an online Language Arts and math program. We will use this at school but you can also access it at home to complete coursework that I will assign.

ST Math/Jiji is an online math program that also allows home access

Imagine Learning is designed to build vocabulary and literacy skills

Accelerated Reader (AR) assesses student understanding of picture and chapter books they have read.

I will be sending home your child’s username and password with their homework packet soon.

Physical Education (P.E.)• Taught by credentialed teachers

with specialized training in the growth and development of young bodies, the activities range from practicing skills sets for specific sports to developing teamwork and making healthy choices.

• Students may bring water bottles for P.E.

Afternoon Dismissal

The students pack up their belongings and we discuss

anything special that will be going on in the near future or that they need to discuss with

you at home.

Students are dismissed from the classroom at my say so,

not at the bell.

Homework• Homework is important. It is an

extension of the learning process that takes place in school.

• As an HUSD guideline, children in the primary grades should be required to spend approximately 30 minutes daily doing homework in addition to reading time.

• Establish an after-school routine and provide your child with a consistent place to work. Keep distractions to a minimum during this time. Help your child develop good study skills.

HomeworkHomework folders are sent home on

MONDAY with a weekly packet and are due completed and signed by a supervising parent / responsible adult on FRIDAY

I will be giving you access to computer programs for your child to use at home for more practice

Suggested times for daily homework:– Spelling practice: 10-15 minutes– Math worksheet 10 minutes– Lang Arts worksheet/ Word Study 20

minutes– Reading 15+ minutes in addition to

activities above

Why can’t I SKIP MY 15 minutes of reading?Student A reads 15 minutes, five nights of every week

Student B reads 5 minutes each night,…or not at all!• Minutes per night x 5 (times per week)

Birthdays• Your child’s birthday is an important

event, so if you would like to send in a healthy snack or keepsake for the class, you are welcome to.

• Per HUSD rules, all edible treats must be store-bought and arrive in their original packaging

• Celebrations will generally take place just prior to afternoon recess.

• I appreciate advance notice so that we can adjust our scheduled activities
