The British are Coming...to Pittsburgh! The annual six-day Britsburgh Festival (September 6-11, 2016) celebrates the long- standing connections between the Pittsburgh region and the United Kingdom. The Festival gives tens of thousands of people in the region an opportunity to enjoy a sense of Britain through music, films, discussions, teas, community-events, art, readings, beer, Shakespeare, tours, Dr. Who, and much more. SPL will be hosting several events with a British connection. They are noted in this newsletter with a Black and Gold British flag. Please Visit http://bacpgh.com/our-programs/events/britsburgh/ to get information about more #Britsburgh events.

One-on-one Career Services Sewickley resident Bob Ryan has been offering Resume Help for several years. He will be expanding his services to include Career Planning and Development, Mentoring, Paths to Promotions, Developing a Training/Career Development Plan, and more. Thank you!

The Library would like to extend a special thank you to:

The Village Garden Club for the new flower boxes located on the patio railing. The plantings and patio are beautiful. A special thanks to Denise Dufour for installing the boxes.

Molly Lundquist, founder of Litlovers.com for spending an evening at the library talking about great books for summer reading and book club discussions.

Judah Samet, Holocaust survivor and Pittsburgh resident for his moving presentation in June. Mr. Samet’s experiences and stories kept the audience of approximately fifty people completely engrossed. His visit was made possible through cooperation with the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh.

Norm Mast for leading the popular Senior Computer Club. SCC meets every Thursday at 11AM.

Vanessa Davis from THRIVE for helping the Sewickley GSA obtain bus transportation to and from the Youth Pride Prom at the Warhol Museum.

Spa Day with Mom Thanks: Denise Merico at North Hills Beauty Academy, for once again sending her amazing ‘Glam Squad’ volunteers to provide mini-manicures, Takila Wormsley for providing amazing chair massages, and Sarah Buehler for providing essential oil demos.

September is Love Your Library Month

There is no other organization in the area quite like Sewickley Public Library that is open and available to everyone. This community gem offers informational, recreational, cultural and educational options in a variety of formats to meet your wants and needs. Giving opportunities abound to ensure the vitality of the library in September – some that will be matched to make your gift go even further. First, all donations made at any time during September to the Library will be eligible for a match thanks to a generous donation from the Jack Buncher Foundation. General donations, memorial donations, honor donations, and gifts to the Friends of the Library (including buying your Savoring Sewickley ticket early) will be matched. If you have not yet made a donation in response to our Annual Appeal, September would be a great month to do so. Perhaps you can make your year-end donation early. These donations can be made by check payable to the Library or on line at www.sewickleylibrary.org/donate/. Second, The Pittsburgh Foundation is offering a recovery Day of Giving opportunity on September 21. The May 3 Day of Giving was suspended due to technical difficulties. Unfortunately, we only received about 10% of what we normally receive in donations from the Day of Giving. The matching funds donated by the Library Board of Directors for the Day of Giving were not exhausted and will be used to match your gift. Donations for the Day of Giving can be made online at www.pittsburghgives.org on Wednesday, September 21. The Sewickley Public Library is the center for lifelong learning in our community. Our very own Rita Crawford has been at the start and heart of youth education for so many of us in Sewickley. Please take advantage of one (or more) of these unique giving opportunities at the Library this month and help us honor and recognize Rita Crawford and keep our Library growing.

And what memories they have … from a one-of-a-kind Story Time Room to fun programs to a comprehensive collection of books and materials in a variety of formats – all due to Rita’s vision and leadership. But most important to Rita are the children and her influence on them regarding the importance of reading and the appreciation of the library.

Rita is particularly proud of hosting 22 years of Battle of the Books. The Battle started with four 4th grade teams (about 20 children) and has grown to an average of 50 teams, which now also includes 5th graders. Recently she has found working with challenged children from many organizations including the Watson Institute and Quaker Valley very fulfilling.

Memories for a job well-done include the little surprises of gifts of gratitude from the children and their caregivers. Most recently the children from a YMCA camp gave her homemade cookies and dubbed her a Community Hero. Other gifts of gratitude include a slate owl made from children’s thumbprints, plate with drawings of book characters and many hand designed cards and coloring pages.

The magazine, Sewickley Living, has also published an excellent article about Rita. If you do not receive the magazine at your home, please stop by the library to peruse the magazine and learn more about the intrepid head of our Children’s Department, Rita Crawford.

The Library Board has declared September to be Rita Crawford month at the Library in order to give everyone an opportunity to thank our long time Children’s Librarian on the occasion of her retirement after 31 years. We invite you to submit stories about Rita and her impact on the community. Please join us for a reception honoring Rita in the Children’s Department on Tuesday, September 20 from 4:00 to 8PM. Everyone is welcome and your presence will make Rita’s day even more special. I hope you will also take this opportunity to help us recognize how special Rita has been through a donation to the Library in September. We cannot think of a better way to recognize and preserve Rita’s legacy.

Carolyn Toth, Director.

Remember: Public Reception in the Children’s Department for Mrs. Crawford is Tuesday, September 20 from 4PM to 8PM. We hope to see you there!
