Mary Rose Merkin, or “Rosey”, was born and raised in Downers Grove, IL; a village just West of Chicago. Rosey received private and public art instruction from childhood, including fine arts, dance, and musical practice. Her exceptional aptitude for practical studies, particularly Mathematics and Science, led her to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree with a Specialization in Glass from the School of Art and Design, at the Liberal Arts School, of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.

Now, and for the last few years, I have been focused on making clear glass funnels, my third series that makes a grand reference to our bodies, water, emotions, beauty, mortality, flow and change. I think of whirling dervishes, clothing, and the movement and irony in Louis Daguerre's “Boulevard du Temple, Paris” (1838). Dualities I consider are time and space, form and function, upward and downward spirals, and so much more. Overall this body of work could be interpreted as the phrase, “This too shall pass.” This work holds a lot of energy and I hope my expression can reverberate in a useful way for all to view.
