Happy Labor Day everybody. This holiday always brings mixed feelings of both good and bad to me. On the good side, most people get a little extra paid time off work to go enjoy the things they like to do. On the bad side, Labor Day signifies the end of my favorite season, summer time.

It’s hard to believe that the pools are closing, the kids are back to school and worst of all, our racing season is starting to come to a close. Don’t panic yet, we still have two good months of racing left in the schedules, it’s just a gentile reminder that things are once again about to wind down again for another year.

I imagine some of you may enjoy the break, but my bet is that most of you would enjoy racing year round if it were

possible here. Stay tuned to MRA, we’ll list any fall or winter schedules that will allow you to travel south or get indoors to race.

For now, lets savor what we have left and enjoy some of the fantastic racing that’s about to take place. I know we keep talking about it, but the year end shoot out between the big three is approaching next month. Both the Ultimate MX and ATV Series along with the MDRA Series will be all wrapped up by the end of this month and the top 15 will be moving on to one of the biggest races ever in our area. In addition the top 15 from the PA MX Series will join them (see story in this issue).

For the harescramble racers out there, your series’ continue to march on. The BP Promotions PA State Harescramble Series continues thru October with the ECEA Series going into late Novermber. Watch the NEOC for their upcoming events as well as this has become a great new series in the area.

In other news, you can continue to check the race coverage at the MRA website but I’ve also built a new website for all the great photo action out there. American Classic Racing (ACR) is a member owned organization that is dedicated to the sport of vintage motocross and off-road racing. ACR conducts AMA sanctioned events in the North Eastern region of the United States. ACR, with the help of its sponsors, hosts one of the best vintage motocross series in the Northeast.

Vintage Honda pilot, Dave McLean made it a clean sweep of the Vintage 80’s Open Expert division at the annual ACR Vintage Vet and Youth Championships at Hurricane Hills. McLean took the holeshot and led wire to wire for the win, uncontested, in both moto’s to take the top tier of the podium. Vintage Kawasaki pilot, Ken Napolitano, took runner-up honors with a 3-2 performance and Joe Fontana, riding a vintage Honda, closed out the podium with a 2-4 tally.

McLean, Napolitano, and Fontana led the start of the opening Vintage 80’s Open Expert moto. McLean had developed a three second lead by the start of lap two with second and third unchanged. Scott Stevens and William Centenaro rounded out the top five. Fontana closed the gap on Napolitano in the final section of lap two but couldn’t get by. McLean’s lead increased to four seconds at the start of lap three. Napolitano and Fontana remained second and third when Centenaro moved up to fourth which dropped Stevens to fifth. Just prior to the start of lap four, Fontana closed the gap on Napolitano again but this time got the pass to stick taking

second. Napolitano was relegated to third. Thirteen seconds separated Napolitano in third and Centenaro in fourth. McLean’s lead was eight seconds at the white flag and nine seconds at the checkers. Fontana, Napolitano, Centenaro and Stevens completed the top five.

McLean, Napolitano, Centenaro and Fontana led the start of the final Vintage 80’s Open Expert moto. McLean quickly pulled away, starting the second lap with another three second advantage. Fontana moved to second in the rhythm section at the end of lap one, relegating Napolitano to third. Centenaro and Anthony Sikorsky rounded out the top five. Fontana managed to keep McLean’s lead to three seconds until his Honda developed a problem that dropped him back to fourth on lap three, Napolitano and Centenaro inherited second and third and Sikorsky was all alone in fifth. McLean got another win, this time with a 14-second lead. Napolitano, Centenaro, Fontana and Sikorsky closed out the top five.

Rausch Creek National was another really great race. I have really been lucking out on reporting on these races because I haven’t been to a bad one yet. There were lots of racers, lots of spectators, and lots of track to race on. The track was about 13 miles long, so the average lap time was in the half an hour range. It was a little difficult to watch the race because the majority of the track was in the woods and since the track was so big it was hard to get to see every part of the track. I did try to go around and see other parts of the track, but I ended up alone, in the woods, with no one around. This was pretty scary because I thought that bears probably lived in the woods around the track, but I will get back to my bear story in a little bit. If it wasn’t for the few bottlenecks on the track it would have been perfect for the racers. That was one complaint that was very prevalent with the racers, because they really got jammed up at them.

Now since this was a national race, we had some national racers to watch. The top three finishers were Jason Raines, the factory Yamaha rider, in first, Jerod Stoner, our hometown hero, in second, and Glenn Kearney, the factory Husqvarna rider, in third. I think everyone was happy to see that a local, Jerod Stoner, got to be up on the awards podium. This was Stoners first time being up

there, and for the first time being up there and getting second must have been an awesome feeling. It was a great awards ceremony with interviews, trophies, and champagne.

Now, I have a pretty cool story about bears that I saw at the race. As I was telling you before, I was alone up in the woods trying to find the track. As I was walking back to where I came from, I was thinking to myself that bears probably lived around here and if I saw one I was pretty much screwed. Luckily I get back to the starting line of the track without any bear encounters. But, as my dad, brother, and I were leaving the track I was telling them my story and how I was scared about the bears. Then my dad pulls over to check something on the motor home on the road that leads you out of the track. I started doing something in the back of our motor home then I hear my brother yell, “Meg! Bears!!” and I run up and see 3 black bears running across the road! It was a mom and her 2 cubs. I am not just telling you this because it is an awesome story, but also because everyone should be careful when out on the track.

This weekend brings round 6 of the 2008 Eastern National Hare Scramble Series to Tremont, Pa., home of Rausch Creek Motorsports. In conjunction with the national series is Round 10 of the PA State Championship Hare Scrambles Series. Once again, the beautiful trails of Rausch Creek Trail Riders were turned into a blistering 13 mile course with monster hill climbs and huge mud bogs thanks to Alex Fell and the rest of Rausch’s hard working track crew. Where the riders were up to the challenge of dodging trees and keeping the throttle pinned shooting for the top of hills?

In the morning, Youth Quads classes saw the track on the other side of the pits. This was by no means an easier one. In the first turn, the track took its first victims with a huge pile up blocking most of the 71-90cc Prod. class. The

rest of the track threw even more challenges to these future pro riders. A tight course and off camber turns made passing difficult but a few riders made it look easy. Starting on the second line was Logan Weishaar and Cole McNulty in the 51-70cc Prod. were able to break in to the Top Ten overall. In the premiere Youth class, there was only 2 minutes between first and fifth. The overall win went to the #171 of Ethan Wordan with Derrec Robinson and Christian Smith rounding out the final

podium spots. A little mistake by any one of these talented racers could have cost them positions on the track and valuable points in their championship run.

After the bikes had run, it was time for the quads to have their fun in the woods. At the start, Open “A” class saw the #914 of Shamokin’s own Tyler Lenig with Chris Borich on his Factory Suzuki and Matt Smiley on the Honda in hot pursuit. Unfortunately for Lenig, he was unable stay with the lead pack. Borich, Smiley and Jarrod McClure were able to freight train their way to the finish within seconds of each other and gapping 4th place Rob Hertz by 8min. Open “B” class was Dustin Worner finishing first in his class and 11th overall. Alex

Young took the “C” class win making his way up to 15th overall passing a lot of “A” and “B” class riders.

Next stop of the Eastern National Championship Series will be in Georgia in mid September. The PA State Hare Scramble Series will be at Foot of the Mountain.

Late July brought warm temperatures and the ATV faithful to Sleepy Hollow for another exciting round of the District 6 Ultimate ATV Series. This series consists of 13 rounds and offers great competition and great sponsorship.I’ve been back in the race business for close to seven years now and one thing I can tell you for sure is; that the ATV guys and gals love a great race and they’ll follow the series wherever it goes. I believe this is the second year for the Ultimate ATV Series and the racers surely

have proved that they want to race in a series. They said build it and we’ll come and that’s exactly what they are doing. Props to both the Ultimate MX Promoters Group and the racers for making it all happen.First off the gate at today’s race was the highly competitive 231 – Open B division. These guys are fast and many of them are chomping at the bit to get to that elite A division. Ethan Keiffer would be the man on this day taking the win in moto # 1. Keiffer would have a tight battle in moto # 2 finishing behind Larry

Krowicki but still maintaining the overall. Quinton Barto whom I’ve watched race since the mini classes ended up second on the podium with Krowicki grabbing the last spot

with 5-1 finishes.In the 70cc production race, another kid I’ve watched since he was four years old, Travis Wotring battled close with Dylan Evans to finish 1-2

overall respectively with Leonard Wyda picking up the third spot. In the 90cc group the year long battle continues between the Tylers, Tyler Turner and Tyler Young go at it at

just about every venue in the series. Turner grabbed today’s win and I believe a slight edge in the point’s battle.In 50cc racing action DJ Bassani won both the 50 Stock Limited and 50 Production classes with a young lady by the name of Taylor Johnson smoking the competition in the girls division. I didn’t even know there was a girls division and five young ladies went out and raced their hearts out today. The 2008 edition of KAWASAKI Motocross Race of Champions is ready to explode with many new racers expected from all over USA. Kawasaki Team Green has confirmed that the U.S. Top Team Green Support racers will be at Englishtown. The feature Open Class will pay a total purse of $4470.00 to the top fifteen racers per moto. The biggest motocross event in recent years is about to take place this fall right in our own back yard. I’m sure many of you know about this upcoming high profile event, for those that don’t please mark it in your calendar.

Every year we see races claiming to offer state championships and the sorts, but this is the first true event on a regional level to determine who the fastest racers in each class really are. The pro payouts are going to be huge and there will be very generous awards for the amateur and mini classes as well. On top of that the sponsorship opportunities should increase drastically if you finish in the upper reaches of your particular classes by participating in an event of this stature.

Congratulations if you’ve made the cut and to those that didn’t this should be one of the best spectator events to attend in our area. Tell your family, tell your friends then pack your gear and head on out to the 1st ever Triple Crown Shootout.

I caught up with Rod Yentzer this week to discuss the 2008 American Suzuki Dealer PA Triple Crown Shoot out, brought to you by MSR, Answer and Pro-Taper between the MDRA, PA MX and Ultimate Motocross Series.

The shoot out will be held October 24-26, 2008 at the Doublin Gap Motocross Park just outside Shippensburg, PA. There will be a Friday practice and a 3 moto format on Saturday and Sunday.

The top 15 riders from each Series in each class will be invited to the shoot out. All of the riders will receive a letter to inform them they made the cut. Alternates will be taken at the event to fill any gate that does not have 40 riders. To be an alternate you must have a MDRA, PAMX or Ultimate Card.

All the riders that attend the shoot out will receive an award for attending.

“We are all so excited to crown the best riders in the tri state area” said Rod. This will be the first time in the history of motocross racing that we have a race of this type in our area and the ability to determine the best rider in each class from all three series.

The riders will all represent their series and the series with the most points will take home the Silver Cup.

MSR, Answer and Pro-Taper will award prizes for the top three riders in all non expert classes.

The American Suzuki Dealer PA Triple Crown shoot out is stated to be the biggest race of the year in our area with the fastest riders attending. Don’t miss your opportunity to race or just attend and watch the biggest race of its kind.

15Moto+Cross for Christ at Dutchman MX ParkJuly 17-19, 2008 - By Jim Bull

I had the pleasure and the privilege last month to be invited to the Dutchmen MX Park to take part in a camp that was started last year to introduce kids both to the sport of motocross and to the teachings of the Bible. Roy Craig is the founder and promoter of a camp called Moto+cross for Christ. The mission of the camp is to simply connect kids to God thru motocross. This year’s focus was on the teaching of the Trinity. The Trinity teaches us about the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit and how they can impact our lives daily.

The camp is totally free to the participants and this year 22 riders and 18 staff members spent two nights and three days at the Dutchmen MX Park courtesy of track owner Rob Papp and his family. The staff consisted of several local motocross riders and volunteers who wanted to help provide a

great experience for the kids both on and off the track. A few of the participants were local racers but many were kids that got their first exposure to motocross and some were kids that got their first exposure to God.

The campers were treated to a full schedule of activities including exercise and nutritional guidance, faith development, bike safety and maintenance and of course motocross training. They had prayer time and open track time along with evening activities that even included a band one night in the DMX clubhouse. There was also lots of good food put together by Roy’s wife Patricia with help from other family members and volunteers.

The campers were divided into three groups based on skill level, Team Hope, Team Faith and Team Love. They would take part in the different activities thru out the day assisted by the Moto+cross for Christ staff. At the end of

camp, seven of the campers were to have their names engraved on the Lords Cup based on votes tallied by camp instructors. The Lord’s Cup was a large trophy donated by Roy’s parents, Roy and Gail Craig.

Money was raised to help support this year’s camp by many different organizations

and individuals. Over $500.00 in product was given to the campers and each one received their own Bible donated by the Zion United Methodist Church of Iona. The Wal-Mart Corporation donated the food and area motorcycle businesses like Lebanon Valley Cycles, Pine Grove Yamaha and VPE helped with giveaways and track support. Beltone Hearing helped raise the initial money to start the camp and R & L Trophies helped with awards and of course the Dutchmen MX Park provided the facilities and the equipment to keep the riders on the track.

Local racers that helped as instructors and staff included Casey Clark, Tim Savidge, Eddie Annewalt, Randy Hayes, Eric Metzinger and Kerry Williams. There were numerous people behind the scenes that helped put together this year’s event and Zach Camp from Victory in Jesus Ministries came out to share the word

of God with the campers and the staff.The last I heard this years camp was a

huge success. Everyone seemed to have a great time both riding and learning and at last reports at least four of the campers have met Jesus and accepted him as their savior. The Happy Ramblers Motorcycle Club hosted round 7 of 8 of their track championship points series in early August at their facility just west of Hanover, PA. Their series ends in combination with the next MDRA event at their facility in mid September and awards will be presented at their October race.

Today’s event brought mild

temperatures for early August with close to 350 racers taking place in the day’s competition. You couldn’t have asked for a nicer day to go racing in August. The temps were down and there wasn’t much dust and the competition was good for the smaller than average rider count.

The Vet classes were first out of

the gate. AMS’s Mike Bear was the only expert in attendance and Mike chose to go off with the B group. This allowed him to work on his passing techniques as he worked his way from mid pack to the front of the group. Bear ended up finishing in the front of the pack with James Dow from Frederick, MD going 2-1 for the B class victory.

Next up were the 65cc racers and we ended up having a great battle in both motos in the 10-11 group. Cory Gilliam has been strong lately running in the front of this pack, but his buddy Jake Runkles came back this week after an earlier season injury to give him a challenge. Gilliam was able to hold off the charging Runkles in the first moto but couldn’t get it done in the second. Runkles got out in front and stayed there going 2-1 for the overall ahead of Gilliam. In the 7-9 group the finishing order was the same in both motos with Mark Hushon taking the win.

The School Boy 4 stoke class also offered some great racing on this day with Happy Ramblers club member Andrew Poling holding on

to get the overall with a 1-2 finish.

As I mentioned Happy Ramblers next event is September 13-14 and it’s the final round of the 2008 MDRA Series prior to the big year end shootout. Make sure you get there early; I have a feeling that the place is going to be rocking.

Getting Sideways with Cory Texter

Well another month of busy racing during the summer is in the books. Seems like a never-ending cycle. I have been so busy with traveling, I just only today got to read my “August” issue of MRA and I really love the new style of the magazine and the changes that have been made already. Jim Bull has done an awesome job over the years and I don’t think anyone else could have done it better. We just recently got home from our yearly west coast trip. This time it consisted of Montana, South Dakota, and Missouri racing. Usually, we make the trip out to Castle Rock, Washington for the yearly nationals they have there. However, this year they canceled that event, so we got to come home a week early. Lately, we have been racing the “big bikes”. The 750cc Harley-Davidson Twins. I was very excited for the month of August to come around, because it meant we would have three 450 nationals to look forward to. It’s a shame that the 750cc Twins nationals pay more then the 450cc Singles nationals. Not only are the 450’s the future of flat track, but they also attract rider counts sometimes into the 100’s where the twins average at a national is around 40-50 riders. I grew up racing 450’s and have a lot more seat time and comfort level with them, so I was eager to hop back on. There was a pro-am short track the night before the Grand National in Montana. A lot of fast guys were there including past national champion Jake Johnson and current champion Kenny Coolbeth along with a ton of others. This was the roughest short track in the history of earth. I know most of you motocrossers out there are thinking that flat tracks are always so smooth and we can’t race rough tracks and blah blah blah. Well, I’m telling you right now. This track was rougher then any motocross track I have ever seen (minus Daytona supercross this year). The ruts were so deep; it would slow my 450cc engine down on the straight-aways. The braking bumps were even throwing JR Schnabel up over his seat, and he is a bulldog on these types of tracks. I rode one of Shayna’s new fuel injected Suzuki’s and finished 7th and 10th out of 40 or so riders in the main event. I felt pretty good for not ever racing the motorcycle and having a box-stock engine. I loved the bike and you might just see me on something yellow next year. Jake Johnson and Sam Halbert won the finals. Next up was the Billings, Montana Half Mile national. I felt good all day, I qualified 11th in session one out of 45 riders or so. I am usually not a good qualifier but I was battling all practice long with Mees, Chris Carr, Schnabel, and Bryan Smith so I knew we would be top 15 for sure. After a good low side in qualifying two, I was ready for the two hour break before heats started. I got a horrible start in my heat race and only could manage a 5th after passing a few guys. We weren’t worried though. We knew we could win the semi and put ourselves in my first Grand National final that night. Well after seeing I had multi-time winner in 2008 Joe Kopp and another regular to the podium Sam Halbert in my semi, we knew we had A LOT of work to do in the semi with only the top 2 transferring. I got a crappy start and came around lap one in 4th place. I finally got by the 3rd place rider and rode my heart out and started reeling in Kopp and Halbert. I chopped their lead down and was right on their rear tires at the finish. I just came up short. Short meaning six tenths of a second at the finish. Heartbreaker. We have had four 450 nationals this year and I missed two of them by a combined eight tenths of a second and the other one I was passing for transfer and crashed. If everything could have gone right, I feel

we could be right up in the points right now, but it happens. Kenny Coolbeth won the main event. Mees and Johnson rounded out the podium. Coolbeth shortened up Johnson’s lead in the points to 9 points with two races left, Peoria on August 17th and Springfield on August 30th. After Billings we headed to Sturgis Bike Week for a short track race. It must have been a good idea, because about 50 other pro riders from around the country showed up. Mees, Wiles, Carr, Bergen, Wood, Varnes, Halbert, Murray, Eslick, and many more were in attendance. I put in an awesome ride in my semi passing 14 guys in 6 laps to make the main event. It was also cool being the only rider on a DTX bike (stock motocross frame) in the final. I was up to 4th at one point in the final, passing Carr and right behind Wiles and Halbert. The track started to dry out during the long 20 lap final. This is where riding the DTX bike hurt me as opposed to the dirt track style framers. I ended up finishing 7th. It was a good ride, but of course I wanted more. The Jammer, Jared Mees won the final over Wiles and Sam Halbert. After Billings, we headed to Sedalia, Missouri for a big race. About 40-45 riders showed up. I made a direct-transfer out of the heat into the final and I ran as low as 14th in the final before passing my way into 8th by the checkers. I had Shaun Russell, Bugs Pearson, and Jersey Jake Johnson in sight by the end. I really wanted 10 more laps to make it 25, because I was on a roll! Overall I had a lot of fun on the trip and my confidence level is back where it needs to be. I have

gained so much experience this year. I couldn’t have done any of it without my dad. He is by far the best sponsor I could ask for and he has taken me so far. The bikes worked awesome all week and I can’t wait for the next race. I got my practice bike back and I am back riding every day and training hard. I am starting some MMA (mixed martial arts) classes in addition to seeing my trainer, Brian a couple nights a week. Coming up next for the dirt track scene would be the next singles national August 17th in Peoria, Illinois. Then on August 23rd, my little sister Shayna looks to continue her awesome season at the Duquoin Magic Mile Shootout where she will be racing for a $10,000 winner take all amateur race. I am scheduled to race in Delta, PA on the 23rd while she is out doing her thing with dad. Then August 30th, September 1st and 2nd is Springfield Illinois Weekend. I can’t wait to get it on! Colton and Chase Smith dominated the smaller bike classes at the opening round of the 14th annual Baltimore County Trail Riders/Cockeysville Optimist Club outdoor benefit short track series. The profits from this event go towards The Cystic Fibrous Society in memory of a BCTRA club member who died of the disease several years ago. Both had run-aways and hard fought wins, with Chase taking the 50 Chain and 50 7-8 classes, with Colton topping the 65, 85 (7-11) and Youth 100 finals. The hardest one was the Youth 100 where he gated second behind 250 B winner, Dan Bromley, with Matt Langrehr, Joe Bromley and Ryan Dragunas behind. Smith slipped under for the lead on the second lap, and Bromley hit his rear tire in three trying to regain the spot. Bromley had a vicious high-side that took him out of action for the remainder of the night. Langrehr led Smith, Joe and Dragunas off the restart. Langrehr did a good job of hugging the inside, so Smith went to the outside and gradually edged ahead, taking the lead off the final turn.

The 65 had Smith in front of Dustin Healey, Cameron Smith, Jacob Smith and Dalton Gauthier. Healey kept him honest while Brandon Price worked his way up to battle Cameron for third in the latter half.

The ‘Holeshot Prince’, Dylan Almony, grabbed the 85 (7-11) lead from the outside from Cameron, Colton and Healey. Colton took second on the third lap and he slipped under Almony into one on the next lap. The top three ran very close throughout.

Chase’s 50 Chain win was wire to wire as he got out in front of Nathan Reichert, Todd Stith and Dillon Curry. Reichert and Stith traded second several times before Stith took control in the closing laps. Price led Smith, Reichert and 50 Shaft winner, Chris Thomas, in the 50 7-8. Smith finally found an opening into one on the sixth lap and took the lead.

Whether the full moon rising off turn one had any effect on the A riders is unsure, but in both Open A and Open Sportsman, they couldn’t ride more than two laps before someone hit the sandy surface. Through it all Brandon Robinson managed to put his Action Motorsports/Lancaster Harley-Davidson sponsored Honda in front by the end of both. Robinson nailed all three of the Open Sportsman starts with Donnie Mullen, Cory Texter and Chris Klinefelter right behind on the final start. Texter took second on the third lap while Klinefelter fell on the following lap. After starting from the penalty line, Mike Poe charged to third on the eighth lap.

Robinson again nailed all three of the starts in the Open Sportsman especially the last one when he was the only one on the front row. Nick Henderson, Mullen, Poe and Klinefelter battled for second that Klinefelter took hold of on the third lap, while Henderson and Mullen battled over fourth.

With his brother out, Joe Bromley was left to uphold the family honor in the 125 final. He grabbed the lead from Jeremiah Snow, Ryan Connelly and Curtis Fisk. Becca Zafia took fourth at the start of the second lap, while Connelly took second off four on the fifth lap and put his Spa and Pool Place/Lancaster Harley Davidson KTM into the lead off four on the next to last lap.

Greg Boutwell used the outside line to gradually get by Ray Jenkins for the 40 + win, while Dillon Cava jumped in front of the 30 + and held off a fast closing Rich Mellinger who finally got by Ken Godwin two laps from the end and almost got Cava for the win.

PJ Larsen and Darryn Durham Split AMA Horizon AwardMORGANTOWN, W. Va. (August 8, 2008) -- The 27th Annual AMA Air Nautiques Amateur National Championship Finals came to a close August 2 with 33 new national champions. The event took place July 28 through August 2 in Hurricane Mills, Tenn. with 1386 participants from across the United States and around the world. Over the course of the event there were five moto winners who hailed from foreign countries: Max Anstie (England), Richard Grey and Dean Wilson (Canada), Senoj Mitchell (Bermuda), and Sayaka Kaneshiro (Japan).

“The world’s greatest motocross vacation lived up to its expectations,” said MX Sports Director Tim Cotter. “The MX Sports family was honored once again to host this prestigious event. We would like to congratulate all of the riders and their families for their great accomplishments. Planning is already in the making to make a bigger and better 2009 event.”

Several dignitaries visited the ranch during the course of the event. Most notably, High School musical sensation Corbin Bleu and country music superstar Craig Morgan were on hand to the delight of fans. Bleu attended the race with his father and drove a golf cart around the facility taking in all of the different festivities. The singer/actor/performer paid particular attention to the Air

Naut iques / Red Bull Wakeboard Jam. Meanwhile, Morgan, who lives approximately 25 miles from Loretta Lynn’s Ranch performed on Loretta’s Stage in front of a capacity audience of participants.

“I always love coming to Loretta Lynn’s. We live 25 miles from here and getting to play this close to home is great. I love riding motorcycles and it’s the best feeling to play music for other people that love motorcycles.”

KLX110, which was raffled off at the conclusion of the concert. Morgan went on to play two unreleased tracks to conclude the show that left the crowd on their feet.

In addition to the 33 Amateur National Champions, there are other special awards that AMA Motocross Director of Motocross Ryan Holliday

announced at the end of the week. The most coveted of which is the AMA Horizon Award that is given to the amateur athlete that shows the most potential as a professional as he graduates from Loretta Lynn’s. For the first time in the 12-year history of the award, two riders were chosen. North Carolina’s PJ Larsen and Pennsylvania’s Darryn Durham were both named the 2008 AMA Horizon Award Winners.

“Both riders rode great all week long,” said Holliday. “There was really no way to pick one or the other. This has been done with road racing and dirt track and, well, it was just the right time for it to happen at Loretta Lynn’s.”

Holliday also announced Georgia’s Joey Savatgy as the 2008 AMA Youth Rider of the Year for his wins in the 85cc (12-13) Stock and Modified division, while California’s Doug Dubach was announced as the 2008 AMA Vet Rider of the Year for winning the Vet 40 and 45 Plus National Championships.

The day started out with a small grey cloud off in the distance but it was foreboding of the weather to come with the few drops that it shed on the way to Dutchmen MX. The rider turn-out was fair with practice starting almost promptly at 9 am. The track was in beautiful condition for practice and the weather made a turn for the better with the sun shining brightly. However those conditions quickly changed when a

storm blew through. At midday the track was extremely dusty so the DMX crew watered right before the Open C moto. No site lap was given resulting in a few crashes from the wet conditions.

Unable to pull of his signature wheeling through the whoops because they were flattened, Dustin Kendall #587 still swept the Open A class with ease. Kyle Sidle #15 on a Suzuki looked very comfortable winning in the 4 stroke, College boy and Open B classes. Rowland Papp was definitely rolling! Fresh

from Tennessee and right off of Loretta Lynn’s track; he was styling and whipping his 85 all day. But the greatest racing I saw all afternoon was between Papp #850, Sharkey #90 and Chavez #469 in the Super Mini classes. Those three pushed each other the entire moto and would go into corners and over jumps almost three wide. Daniel Buckley #30x was back to pulling his holeshots on the 250 C and Open

C classes with the Cook brothers following right behind.

Besides the unpredictable weather, Dutchmen MX was host to great talent and fast racing. Well we are back for part two of this series. We left off last month at the camshaft and valve train after defining the four distinct cycles of a four stroke engine. This month, we will delve into the maintenance considerations for such.

Because of all the different models out there we will generalize. We will start at one end and travel through to the other. It is important to stress the maintenance; as a lot of the time it is what makes this fun or not. The first thing I really recommend to anybody serious about proper maintenance is an hour meter. This way you can set your schedule accordingly. Moreover, a lot of factory manuals set out maintenance in an hourly format. And these guys really know how often something should be lubed, replaced, etc., etc. They know because they test individual components to failure. Hence, get a manual.

Moving on … the air filter is one of the easiest, yet most neglected, things to maintenance. It should be cleaned regularly. I advise guys to have at least two. Keep one cleaned and oiled in a ziplock baggy and the other on the bike. If you have a really muddy moto and the filter is covered, than you simply pull it from the bag and away you go. Next are the valves. A lot of high performance engines are using titanium valves. These valves tend to rap into the head and get tight. Thus, there is no clearance between the valve and cam. Accordingly, no oil can get between the cam and valve train, and, since the valve is tight, you can get blow by between the valve and valve seat, thus burning a valve.

The next thing is engine oil. This stuff is down right abused. These new four stroke engines are running extremely hot EGT’s (exhaust gas temp), which the oil must fight off. Accordingly, this is not a place to skimp. I have seen more crankshaft failures on these new engines, due to improper oil maintenance, than ever before. Spend the extra money and get the good stuff and change it often.

This now brings us to the top end. All you seasoned vets out there remember the ease of rebuilding a 2 stroke top end and the frequency with which you did it. These new four strokes are no different. Many manufactures recommend top end rebuilds around the 20 hour mark. They are not that much more difficult to rebuild and that we will cover next issue.

Blue Diamond Park hosted round # 9 of 12 of the Delmarva MX Series presented by Moto Jockey.com. Over 350 racers came out to compete on a day when Mother Nature thru a mix of weather at the competitors of this series. One minute the sun would be out, the next rain and lightning. On several occasions riders would travel back and forth to the staging area trying to get their motos in. Tornado warnings circulated the region but in the end all motos would be run and everyone would go home safe.

Some of your bigger winners on the day would be expert racer Addison Kramer from Lititz, Pennsylvania. Kramer was challenged only once all day by Wally Palmer from Mullica Hill, NJ. Palmer would get by Kramer only briefly about midway thru the second Open A moto. Kramer quickly regained his lead allowing Palmer two second overall finishes on the day.

In amateur racing, now local to Blue Diamond, Tyler Wozney would get out in front and dominate all day. Wozney’s only hiccup would be a mechanical failure in the first moto of the Open B division. He had a firm lead when the bike went down and out for the rest of the race. Wozney swept both motos of the 250 B division and came back to win moto two of Open B, on top of that he took home the College Boy honors as well.

Several riders did well winning multiple classes racing in the mini divisions. Tyler Kirschner took home three wins with Kyle Savvas notching

The Shape of Fuelby Al CarrOwner - Reactive Suspension Inc.

A Volatility Curve is a way of characterizing fuels. In a lab a measured amount of the fuel to be tested is placed in a heating chamber which is attached to a condenser. The chamber is heated and as the temperature rises the fuel begins to boil off. The vaporized fuel transfers over to the condenser where it liquefies. Once 10% of the fuel has crossed over, the temperature is recorded; this is referred to as the 10% point or the fuels “Front end”. This is a good measure of the fuels cold starting capabilities, fuel that transfers over at lower temperatures will have good cold start

capabilities but may be troublesome in hotter environments. The next critical measurement is the 90% point; this number gives some indication of the fuels volatility. Technicians will plot the numbers on a graph where the temperature is the vertical and the evaporation percentage is the horizontal. The curve generated by plotting the numbers from 1 to 100% is said to be the fuels shape.

The volatility curve of pump gas is relatively unimportant but for race fuels it is very helpful. Turbo charged or Supercharged engines need more knock resistant fuels due to the higher pressures generated but since the most volatile components will boil off rather quickly due to the increased heat of being compressed the fuel engineer will use knock resistant additives with lower volatility. Drag racers like to run cold engines for denser intake charges, lower volatility fuels may not evaporate quickly enough in this cooler environment so higher volatility components will be required in their fuels make-up.

Some racers believe that the higher the octane number the greater the performance, this isn’t true. Higher octane fuels have the potential for more power but to extract this potential energy the compression ratio of the engine must be raised. The octane number measures the temperature stability of the fuel molecule. You should avoid using octane numbers higher than recommended for your bike. Not only are you throwing away money but you are probably losing performance.

I’m sure we’ve all heard that mixing a gallon of say 93 octane unleaded fuel with a gallon of 93 octane leaded fuel will yield a fuel with a higher octane? This is somewhat true as the addition of tetraethyl lead to fuel has a non linear effect. The first gram added will have a greater effect on boosting the octane than the addition of the second gram which will be greater than the third and so on. One gram of lead may boost the octane lets say 5 points while the second gram may only add another 2.5 points and the third less than one point. So the addition of the lead in the leaded fuel to the unleaded fuel will boost the octane of the unleaded fuel thus raising the overall octane rating of this blend. Never store leaded fuels in translucent containers as light will tend to cause the lead to settle out of the fuel thus lowering the octane.

In closing I’d just like to say that just because we have all handled gasoline without incident you should never become complacent, always take great care when handling it as it only takes one mistake to result in tragedy.

Pikes Peak UpdateThe saying is, “Pike’s Peak or Bust”, for Bob Kline of Columbia, PA. The “Race to the Clouds” was a tremendous success. Bob secured a podium finish of 3rd place on July 20, 2008 at the PPIHC 86th annual race with a time of 13 minutes and 12 seconds. “It all went so fast, no pun intended!” said Kline. “The racers are dispatched from the starting line three at a time at one minute intervals. I qualified 4th and based on my racing experience I thought I was in the perfect spot, bikes to chase and bikes to push. It didn’t quite work out that way as I left my other 2 line competitors in the dust and was virtually alone for ten miles. I did manage to catch and pass the third place guy but there wasn’t enough time to catch the leader. I am very happy with my finish and can’t wait to return next year! Honda provides a huge silver cup to the winner and I intend to have my name on that cup!”

For this years race I want to thank everyone who helped make my race a success. Dave Moore at Lancaster Honda has supported me for over 15 years and continues to be there whenever it’s time to go racing! Of course I couldn’t go fast without Tom Carlson of TC Racing. He always builds some wild engines. This time however he also designed a RAM air system for the high altitudes. Since I finished only 26 seconds behind the leader I’d have to say it was working great. He is already working on new designs for next year. Mike Cafro of Team Honda hooked me up with Elka Suspension who developed a prototype shock system just for this race. Mike was also on call day and night for guidance and advice. Mac Moore, Donnie Kissinger, Matt Dice and Dennis Brechbill all fellow racers round out the crew that made valuable contributions to my success. Thanks again to everyone.

Round 8 of 10 of the 2008 MDRA Race Series landed back at the Tomahawk MX Park in Hedgesville, WV in late August. I only visit this facility about one time each year and each time I go back I see notable improvements. It’s apparent that the promoters here truly want to offer a great facility to their competitors.The weather continued to be fantastic for August racing with sunny skies and mild temperatures. The turnout was once again great as is the norm for an MDRA event and quite a few of today’s racers were fresh off an appearance at Loretta Lynn’s.First off the gate was the School Boy 2 Stroke division with the usual characters running up in front of the pack. Lunceford, Sparks and Yohe have been banging bars all season long but today’s race brought back the addition of Jake Grove who has been down with a broken collar

bone for the last few rounds. Grove pulled the holeshot but by the end of lap one was running around the fifth position. By moto’s end he was able to work his way into the 4th position and he came back in the second moto to grab the win and finish second overall behind the first moto winner Cody Lunceford. Grove also competed in the School Boy 4 Stroke division where he went 3 -9 for sixth overall.Another MDRA regular back from injury was West Shore Suzuki’s Willy Toth. Toth told me before the race that the doctor had cleared him to race but warned him that a shot to the same location could have bad results. He also told me that he was going to take it easy and just get some ride time in. When the gate dropped on the first moto of the 250 A division the leader emerged on the # 48 Suzuki, I thought to myself, who is that out front? Then I realized that Toth wasn’t really serious when he said he was going to take it easy. He was riding a borrowed bike and cruising out front. If that’s taking it easy then the rest of the A class better watch out when he gets back to 100%, he went 1-2 for second overall behind Broc Schmelyun and went 1-1 for the overall in Four Stroke.Willy’s brother Garret also made an appearance at Tomahawk, this time racing in the amateur divisions. Garret is just back from a third place finish at Loretta’s in the School Boy division and he is charging harder than ever. He swept three divisions

today winning both premier amateur

divisions as well as School Boy Four Stroke.The MDRA’s next round heads out to Pleasure Valley Raceway followed by the final round at Happy Ramblers in mid September. Just announced at the Tomahawk riders meeting, series promoter Jeff Yentzer informed everyone that all riders that attend every MDRA round will receive an award at this year’s banquet. The way I saw it:By Jim Mucklin

Man what a day for racing, blue sky and looking at the gate sheet there a total of 455 bikes set to line up. I couldn’t have made a better line up if I wrote it myself 19 supermini’s, 11 in open A, 22 in open B, 35 in open C. Two full gates of C riders, that’s not enough, how about the best 35 plus A+B show that I have seen this year. This was no puttin around the track my friend, this was District 6 racing at it’s best, thanks for the show.Speaking of show’s, the air show was on spectator’s row if you missed the 85’s you missed the race, I can’t believe the talent in this group. It doesn’t matter if they are 9 or 13 they are flat out fast. I can’t drop any names; if I did I would fill the page, but Oscar if you stay up in the air any longer your going to need a pilot’s license. The afternoon even got better, while I always get a great show with B, today was the A team came to ride, don’t get me wrong I like every race but I still have Todd Weindel and Randy Castle’s voice in my head, next time you see them thank them they make the show. Back to A, I don’t know but when I turn around and see the fence fill up I know it’s going to be good and it was, 11 guys put it down! I got to say that every race I see a couple of rider’s step up there own game a notch for that day so in addition to every A rider, here’s a couple riders on fire: Nikki Stewart in the women’s (I know it’s a family thing), Avery Brown (you got that corner thing down), Kyle Sidle (I’m Likin it) and Roland Papp ( were do you get those holeshots from?) Sorry but that’s the way I saw it.Chuck Aughinbaugh and I were the last two out and we turned the light off. When I got home my son was there and he asked me if I wanted to watch one of

the races he had recorded on TV that we never seem to have time to watch and I told him I would pass because I had seen a better race at Sleepy Hollow.

Tell us a little about yourself.I own Pro Pilot Corporation which owns and operates Pro Pilot Supension and Pro Pilot Racing. I am forty three years old, a college graduate with a backgound in engineering, business, architecture and a life time AMA member and racer for the past thirty plus years and have raced professional motocross for about fifteen years all over the United States, parts of Canada and some of Europe.

You were a top ranked local and national rider for many years. How many years did you hold a national #?Eleven consecutive AMA National numbers- many in the top fifty.

You were more of a National rider. Did you ever try Supercross?Yes, I actually made the main in the supercross class at Daytona a couple times, Toronto Canada Supercross I finished top ten back in the day and raced it several times, I also raced some invitational supercross in Denmark, Sweden and a few others all over.

What was your best national number?41

What do you think about the current state of the nationals? Four strokes make for sort of “All vanilla racing” verses the personality of forty or more flavors of 2 stroke racers like “Baskin Robins Ice Cream!”

You competed on the national tour back in the days of the 500 class. How do today’s 450 four strokes compare to the 500cc 2-strokes of the past?The four strokes are overall a better bike and much easier, but they are both way too bulky for real racing.

Did you have a favorite national track?A racers rough track Millville, Minnesota was always tough and you knew it would be worth the trip.

In addition to motocross you did quite well racing hare scrambles and a couple of enduros. What type of racing do you enjoy now?I enjoy a variety of racing right now, I’ll do AGP ,GNCC and local Moto when the spirit moves me.

Do you still compete on a regular basis?A couple times a month maybe and whatever is the most fun thing to do but no schedule and good weather. I won the first two AGP Hare Scrambles this year racing the XC1 pro class and went to some opening day motocross around the Northeast.

You started a successful suspension and performance business many years ago in your garage. What made you decide to do that?Out of shear necessity. I actually didn’t even have that start in a garage, I started with the T-shirt on my back and all my own pennies! I would pass a two digit pro at a rough track like Southwick right down the middle, and they would hand me their stuff right at the track at say “just bring it back for me next week!”. As a two digit pro rider traveling to every state in the country for fifteen years, I had some good sponsors and equipment for the time but there was only so much any company would do for even the top guys with national numbers 26-100 back then so after indulging in doing the right stuff to the right things my own results and customer following and their results improved.

How long ago did you start Pro Pilot Racing?It’s been about twenty years now, about ten or so years in this building I built while racing and have expanded and finished space over the years to about seven thousand square feet with a showroom on about three acres commercial which is our race shop about two miles from Six Flags Great Adventure. I’m in the process of another twelve thousand square foot building on the front part of the same location but I don’t need to rush it.

Tell us about Pro Pilot Racing.We Ship suspension and performance parts around the entire United States every day of the week from www.propilotsuspension.com .We have a tremendous internet business with a price structure well over twenty percent lower than the industry standard with super fast turn around and convenience. We are one of the largest Ohlins Sales, Service and Tech Centers in the country. We do suspension for over eighty franchise dealership shops like BMW, Ducati, Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki, KTM dealers around the country plus regular customers.

Do you feel that your riding success was instrumental in your business success?A little, but the strangest thing now is that after beginning with motocross suspension and racing I never thought that every day I would also be building Ohlins BMW streetbike, Roadrace, ATV, and Snowmobile suspension. They each have turned out to be large percentages of our overall business. There are also so many special projects for racers, teams, and just individuals I never thought I’d be doing that are amazing.

Do you have a favorite racing moment from your long career?I have really great memories of so many things it’s real hard to pick probably my first top ten overall at a national and traveling all over, three time Vet Race Champion and winning all three track championship points series in the same year 250 expert, 25+ expert, 30+ expert.

Any closing words?Probably the best advice is to try to do something you really like in life if you can because chances are it will take so much of your time you won’t mind doing it which is why I get up every day before six and never needed an alarm clock.

AMA Motocross - Stewart, Villopoto Clinch ChampionshipsBy Jean Turner, August 17, 2008

A GOOD DAY TO BE GREEN Monster Energy Kawasaki’s James Stewart had yet

another stellar weekend, riding to victory with another perfect score. But it was the first moto at Spring Creek in Millville, Minnesota that marked one of the highest notches on Stewart’s wall. His win garnered him his first ever AMA Motocross Championship title - one that has eluded him year after year. But there has been little question as to who the 2008 outdoor season belongs to; Stewart remains undefeated and his perfect moto score for the year continues.

“Last time I was here I got lapped,” Stewart said from the podium with a laugh. “So this was good. To get this one out of the way... it was a long time coming. To sweep both motos and win [the championship] was awesome.”

“This has been my toughest season,” Stewart continued. “All the struggles before and everything I went through to get back [healthy] – it really makes this special to me. I really want to thank Kawasaki for all the hard work they’ve put in.”

Stewart’s rides in both motos were pretty uneventful – both times he immediately moved into the lead and checked out before the second lap was over. But behind Stewart, the racing stayed interesting. The first moto saw Red Bull Honda’s Ivan Tedesco in second place early in the race. Millville marked his first race back after being out with an injury since early in the Supercross season. Also back in action this weekend was Factory Yamaha’s Broc Hepler. The “Ice Man’s” return to action was also his premier race in the motocross class. It was a solid run for Hepler, who started and finished the race in fifth. Tedesco slipped back, surrendering podium positions to his teammate Andrew Short and Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Timmy Ferry. Josh Hill recovered from a bad start to take fourth in front of Helper followed by Michael Byrne, Tedesco and Jeff Alessi.

The second moto saw Jeff Alessi with the holeshot (although two turns later Stewart relieved him of the lead) and a first turn pile up sending many of the key players to the ground. The crash took Hill out of the race and Tedesco and Short started near dead-last.

Ferry soon joined them in the back of the pack after he crashed heading into the second lap. Meanwhile, Alessi ran a strong second followed by Byrne, Goerke and Cody Cooper.

Short charged through the pack and came back to fifth – enough to land him on the overall podium in second. Byrne collected second in the moto ahead of Cooper to take third overall. MDK KTM’s Nick Wey finished fourth overall with a 10-4 score and Timmy Ferry rounded out the top five overall with a 3-12 score on the day. LITES

Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto dominated the opening moto at Spring Creek Motocross Park, finishing ahead of Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey, but the second moto was a bit more eventful when Villopoto crashed on the first lap. “I just came down the first downhill and I was pushing hard,” stated Villopoto. “I think I hit a wet spot. The next thing I know I was rolling on the ground.”

It was enough to hand the overall win to Dungey, who opened up a commanding lead on the Lites field. But in the bigger picture, Villopoto didn’t give anything up to Dungey since his second place finish was more than enough to clinch the championship.

“I didn’t know exactly where I needed to finish but I had an idea,” Villopoto said. “I just wanted to finish second because I knew I could [catch them].”

Nonetheless, Dungey was happy to take away another win.

“It feels good,” Dungey said. “Two months ago I was just settling for second. I had to believe in myself to get where I am now and compared to last year, when I didn’t win at all, I’m thankful to be healthy and having success.”

Villopoto’s Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki teammate Brett Metcalfe finished third overall with a 4-3 for the day while Jake Weimer claimed fourth overall with a 7-5. A member of the “graduating class of Loretta Lynn’s” was impressive in his debut. Blake Wharton rounded out the top five overall with a 10-4 score for the day.
