CAUGHT IN THE ACTSponsored by:

boo !! - i love Halloween, Did i scare you? i hope not. You know the scariest part about the whole thing is that the

racing season is just about wrapped up here in our area. until you are reading this the 2006 MDrA Series will be in the books with only the year end banquet and Fun Day left on october the 7th. racers take advantage of that date if you can. the awards are always good, the food will probably be even better (i love to eat) and on top of it all you get a chance to ride. All are welcome wether you are a member or not, you just need to pre register.

the ultimate MX Series will be hosting their last round in october as well. Head on out to Happy ramblers to get a shot at the factory contingency money being offered on the day and watch for D6’s “Motocross only” banquet this year to be held in January in reading, PA.

Also finishing up in early october at the new Dutchmen MX Park will be round # 12 of the PA State Hare Scramble Series. this is one of the premiere off road Series on the east coast. their year end banquet is always a good one with ton’s of awards for the racers. tune in to that at the Holiday inn

at grantville, PA on november 11th. never fear, there is still lots of racing left,

you just might have to travel a little further to do it. the good news is that the price is down at the pumps and you still have Halloween to look forward to.

Stay tuned to MrA the next couple of months to see what we have planned for next year, We have two issues left this season before we take a month off to re-fuel. We’ll be announcing our winter promos in the november and December issues so make sure you pay attention. We wouldn’t want you to miss out on any of the good stuff. More importantly pay attention to all the great info found in our pages. Where to get that new ride or where to get the old one freshened up. How about your christmas lists, You know there are only a few weeks left. Sit down with your MrA and find the gifts that the people on your list really want.

Well, thats about it for this month. thanks for reading and be sure to stay logged onto our website. talk about great christmas gifts. catch your racer in action with an MrA Photo they’ll really love. You can also link to many of our advertisers web sites from our links page. go ahead, check it out. You’ll be glad you did.

Until next time.Jim Bull, MRA

name: Joe bromley

event: PA State Hare Scramble Series

age: 12

hometown: Doylestown, PA

race #: 5

ride: Polaris Predator 90

Class: 90cc Youth AtV

experience: 7 Years racing

Fav. Food: i like everything

Fav. racer: barry Hawk, ricky carmichael

hobbies: Soccer Player

sponsors: MSr/Answer racing, Monster Plates, bromley Mc, Mom and Dad

this month we got back to some Hare Scramble racing so it was only natural to find ourselves a

Hare Scramble Hot Shot for the month of September. What a tough call this was, there are so many

talented youth and adult racers out there in the off road world and i had to narrow it down to one.

(sometimes it stinks to be me)

Anyhow i headed out to the Ft. of Mountain in early September for a PA State round and one of

the things on my list was to come home with a Hotshot. in the second race of the day i was standing

in the middle of the grass track watching young Joe bromley just tearing up the field and i thought to

myself, i should really feature Joe.

there have been many times in the past that i had this same thought, but i’ve never used him

mainly because his parents are one of the promoters of the series. i thought maybe someone might

think i was showing favoritism. the truth of the matter is that this young man from eastern Pa.

deserves it.

After the race i headed over to the bromley pit, i

knew they wouldn’t be there long because they were

headed to a short track race later in the day. the more

i talked to Joe, the more i realized that this kid really

did deserve the honor.

Joe has been riding since the tender age of three.

He started out on a Suzuki Lt50 and by the age of

5 he was headed to the race track to continue the

decades long racing heritage of the bromley family.

His first race was on a PW 50 at Shippensburg

Speedway. Joe crashed that day and he told his dad, if i’m going to keep doing this, i’m going to do

it on a quad.

So to a quad it was and he’s never looked back since. over the years Joe has won championships

in both the 50cc and 70cc AtV divisions in District 6, the Flying Dutchmen Series and the PA State

Hare Scramble Series. this year Joe is looking for the hat trick by winning all on the 90cc machine.

right now he is sitting in first place in all the Series with only a few races left.

Looking to the future, Joe will be moving back to race motorcycles again. He has been short

tracking on a 100cc machine all summer and he looks to move over to the bikes full time in 2007.

Joe will be racing in both Hare scramble and Flat track competition.

there you have it, our Hare Scramble Hotshot for September is Joe bromley. Sometimes even

the fastest kids get looked over just because of who they are. Joe, i hope you can forgive me, you

certainly should have been here before.

the blue comet Motorcycle club hosted their first race event in over 30 years in mid August at their clubhouse in Skippack, PA. the blue comets formed in 1937 and they are the oldest continuous operating motorcycle club in the united States today. they are celebrating their 70th Anniversary in 2007 and boy are they doing it right.

the club ran tt Scrambles races on their grounds thru out the 1970’s. For one reason or the other they got away from it and this year they decided it was time to get back to some racing. the club members decided on doing a harescramble and with the help of the township and surrounding community they were able to pull it off. Matter of fact i haven’t seen this much support for an event in many years, maybe never.

As i rounded the corner in the road and saw the gate to their grounds i was overtaken by banners and signs listing the sponsors for the event. As i pulled in there were club members in bright orange and yellow shirts, and they were everywhere. there was music playing and vendors and people to help you park. it was pretty cool.

As the day wore on the races went off without a hitch. A live band showed up and the eats were incredible. they had award ceremonies after each group and the scoring all seemed to be good. i bet 10 different people asked me that day how they were doing and can i get you anything. i was starting to feel spoiled.

the racing? Yeah that was real good too. in the Pee Wee divisions, local hotshot ethan Jaudas ran away with the victory. in the youth divisions things were a little tighter with Justin Frederick and Jacobus Ferreira battling a good portion of the race. in the end Frederick would pull away for the win. then the real deal came in the afternoon main. cycle techs ryan rodgers and bromley Motorcycles Wally Palmer would battle for two hours straight with not much more than a bike length between them at any one time. the race was up for grabs and it would be rodgers at the checkers.

the two would again square off in a one lap dash for cash that was worth $1125.00 to the winner. Sponsors donated money and

riders were out for blood to get their hands on that cash. i believe 8 or so riders lined up but rodgers would be the man on this day.

the blue comets put on a great show and event and i believe they are hoping to do a repeat in 2007. Watch for an update here in the pages of MrA and you can keep tabs on their website at www.bluecometmc.com.

round # 8 of the MDrA race Series landed at Doublin gap MX Park in late August, Saturday offered a practice day with racing on Sunday. this round offered Yamaha contingency and West Shore Suzuki from Mechanicsburg, PA was your race day sponsor. Michael Jones was your gas card winner racing out of the 85cc (12-15) c division.

As always the competition was red hot and the gates were packed. the first motos of the day saw college boy and School boy go at it. the college boy division has been huge this year with some of the best riders from the area banging bars to see who the fastest man is in the 16-24 year old division. You can ride any size bike over 125cc and you can be ranked novice to expert. Local expert rider Michael Foor from chambersburg, PA would dominate on this day sweeping the class. other great battles on the day would see brad Presgraves and trevor Monn go at it in the 125 c final main. both would win their divisions and they lined up against 38 other riders to see who would get the overall. in the end it was Martinsburg Motorsports Presgraves with the win. the Women’s division saw a great battle between Jessica Smith and Kelsey green. the two would battle thru out the day with green gaining

the overall.the mini racing action was intense as

always with the stars of the future battling thru the course at Doublin gap. Mark Hushon would take two wins on the day; dominating the 50cc (7-8) A division while laying down some nasty “no footers” off the spectator double jump. Hushon would take the win in the 60cc novice group as well. both ethan bowlin and Seth Hammaker coming off of great finishes at Loretta’s would win their respective 50cc divisions also.

Local MX racer Joey chanel found out first hand that there was a real need for Medsticks. Just a few short years ago, Joey found himself in a medical emergency at the track and it almost cost him his life because the paramedics didn’t have the information they needed. Since then Joey and his family have developed the Medsticks program for athletes from all genres of competition.

What is Medsticks? • Medsticks is an advancement of

the medical i.D. bracelet or necklace for athletes.

• Medsticks is a simple 1 ½ inch sticker placed on an athlete’s helmet to signify

that he or she has a medical condition. it is placed just above the eyes because that is the first place a paramedic looks.

• Medsticks provide critical information to medical service providers instantly.

• Medsticks are an instant medical identity system for active competitors with medical conditions.

• Medsticks are absolutely 100% Free to all competitors.

• Medsticks is a non – profit organization that develops and promotes the medic alert sticker. thru their website, educational meetings, events and volunteering Medsticks has supported and encouraged sports safety awareness for organizations, athletes and their families.

Log onto their website at www.medsticks.com to find out how you can get your very own Medsticks or to see how you can help this very worthwhile cause. Paramedics, while at the track, please look for Medsticks first.

Paul Crumling Memorial Race • September 3, 2006 • By Len & Ben Breech7TH ANNUAL PAUL CRUMLING MEMORIAL RACE - SHIPPENSBURG SPEEDWAYbaer breaks out at crumling Memorial

SHIPPENSBURG, PA. SEP. 3Similar to his older brother’s, Shawn, win

at the inaugural Paul crumling Memorial, evan baer took his first A class win at the Shippensburg Speedway’s seventh running of this race. However, the battlefield H-D/Fly racing/brP/cumberland Kawasaki/tiger Skins/Keeney Motor Sports sponsored evan did his brother one better by winning the open A Modified frame class prior to the crumling race. the race has a few special rules; it is open to riders who have never held a pro license and if you bring out a red in the final, you’re out. Previous winners include a pair of AMA Horizon Award winners and a trio of national number holders.

the entries were divided into four heats, taking the top two, and two semis, also taking two each. After finishing second the past two years, brandon robinson came in as the prohibitive favorite and after cautiously winning his heat, still was the favorite. baer, Austin greenland and Shayna texter completed the heat winners and all were considered favorites. At the start of the twenty-lap race, baer grabbed the lead from his by the rail starting spot, with robinson, chris Maccarty, greenland and texter following. As the laps ticked off, baer gradually added to his margin as robinson was actually holding up the others. greenland took third on the seventh lap and was looking for a way around robinson. With six to go, the red came out for a hard fall in one that baer just missed.

During the break, robinson made a rear tire pressure adjustment that made a world of difference. texter dropped out with transmission woes on her Kawasaki. baer again took the restart, but robinson stayed close, even getting under briefly off the second turn as baer drifted slightly high. but by turn three, baer was in control and kept it till the end. For robinson, it was his third year as runnerup.

Also run as a crumling Memorial race is the 100 for the supposedly 100 four strokes. For the second year in a row, cassidy Heiser took this race. He easily led tyler Stacey, erin Kissinger, Dan bromley and

eric Yurejefcic. bromley took third on the fourth lap while Heiser kept his margin up

front. Heiser also took the Youth Sportsman and 85 combined on his Action Motorsports sponsored Honda, both times over Joey Schmidt.

baer served notice earlier when he grabbed the open A Modified lead from robinson, r. J. Hart and tom Mcgrane. robinson stayed close most of the way, while Hart fell out with a flat rear tire. in the open A Stock frame class, Doug reinert grabbed the lead from robinson, Maccarty, Joey Parks and Shayna. the top three were very close, while the others fought for fourth.

the Sportsman final also had a rider winning his first A final, Parks. Parks put his Parks refuse sponsored Honda in front of greenland, cory texter and robinson. the top four stayed very close, with texter trying to take second using the outside line

off four on the final lap, but drifted high and finished fourth.

Haden Avery took a pair of b classes, open b Stock frame and 125 finals. in the open final, he was involved in a close four way battle with open b Modified winner,

Mike Standiford, tony Whipperman and Derek Hersh. With Standiford trying the outside most of the way, several times they were three abreast. off the fourth turn on the seventh lap, Avery slipped under them for the lead with Standiford slotting into second. in the 125, Avery took the lead from John Long, Jacob Shoemaker and Jesse Long and pulled away.

in the 250 b final, Shoemaker put his Suzuki in front of the Longs and brett Pugh. While Shoemaker started pulling away in

only his fourth start on a 250, the Longs and Pugh fought closely for second. on the fourth lap, John took control of third.

the 50 classes had a pair of double winners cameron Smith taking the 4 Stroke and 7-8 groups and Dylan Almony topping the oil injected and 4-6 groups. 65 win went to Jeremiah Snow. r. J. Hart took the 750 final while Lew Woods won the 30 + and John Henderson was fastest in the 40 +. Dave Yasher took his first win ever in the Vintage class holding off Joe reynolds’ Yamaha on his rotary valve Kawasaki.

My name is roy craig and i have been moved to work on a program to combine the word of Jesus christ with motocross. i am a devoted christian and i have a love for riding motorcycles. i enjoy working with children and during my prayers for direction i was moved to work on creating a ministry that involved motocross. i have been working on this and i am not sure what direction to take. i have a group of qualified individuals, the location for the training, certified trainers and teachers, and now i need to know what is next. i have been contacting churches and sponsors. i am contacting you because you may have some advice for me or guidance. i will include my letter and i would greatly

appreciate any guidance you may be able to provide:

greetings, i come to you today with a message from our Lord Jesus christ. i have been so moved by the Holy Spirit to write this letter to further promote and increase awareness of our Lord Jesus christ through an outreach program called Moto+cross for christ. i am reaching out to all who will allow me to speak to their organization, and or individual in the effort to meet and talk about this wonderful children’s ministry in the hope of raising sponsors. We are in need of start-up capital as well as operating revenue and equipment, please consider helping in whatever way the Holy

Spirit calls you to do. the camps will be a time for teaching our children the love of Jesus and the basic skills of Moto+cross. We have a staff of seven fulltime members, they are as follows, roy craig, Director of Fund raising, tom Hodge it tech and Web design (under development), greg Pamart, Motorsports Director, certified instructor, certified Mechanic, claudette Leone, Youth Minister, Kacie Damiter, Youth Program Director and cPr and First Aid certified, Dennis Wilson Director of food Preparation and Joey rozyckie, Facility Manager and certified instructor.

the Ministry in which i have been so moved to be involved with is very important

in reaching out to all children in every social standing, god calls us as christians to reach our children so they may become mature adults with christian values and the Love of christ. We will make every effort to preach the good news to all children and allow even those who cannot afford it to attend the camps for free.

the following is an outline of how the camps will operate; we will hold two camps per month, five days per week, and twice a month. We want to, god willing get in a minimum of nine camps, starting March 2007.

the programs will consist of:• Faith development and Christian

based learning, • Exercise, • Nutritional importance, • Bike safety and maintenance, • Moto+cross training, • Childrens programming, • Nightly prayerWe will be reaching out to children 6-13

years of age and connecting gods love with children through Motorsports.

in closing i would ask for you or your organization to prayerfully consider promoting this awesome ministry through whatever the Holy Spirit moves you to do. if you require additional profiles of our staff, degrees or qualifications contact Moto+cross for christ and we will be happy to provide. Also, i would be so privileged to come and speak with yourself or group on behalf of Moto+cross for christ any day of the week. We will not be able to reach our children and communicate the word of our Lord Jesus christ without your support.

i would like to finish with something i taught my 7-year-old son; i told him that we are all Angels, and god uses us each and everyday to answer prayers. Someone may be praying right now for a smile or a word of encouragement. And you may be that person to answer their prayers, so we are all angels in a way. Please if this letter does not touch you it may be intended for someone praying to be involved in a great outreach program, please pass it on or pass this letter out to whom ever. god may be using you to answer someone else’s prayer. be god’s little Angel, and may god bless you and keep you.

happy ramBlers motocrossRound #9 MDRA Race Series • August 26-27, 2006 • MRA

the Happy ramblers Motorcycle club was your host for round # 9 of the MDrA race Series. Saturdays practice day brought sunny skies and close to 300 riders to the dusty ramblers course. the area has not had much rain in recent weeks and Sunday nights drenching was desperately needed. We may have gotten a little more than desired but i believe Sunday morning’s conditions were much more welcome than what could have been without the rain.

A good crowd was on hand as usual for an MDrA event. this organization in only its second year continues to attract racers from both north and south of the Mason Dixon line. their events are well run with excellent paybacks for racers in all classes. if you haven’t checked them out yet log onto their website for details at www.masondixonriding.com. next year promises to be bigger and better than ever, so as your planning your 2007 racing season this fall be sure to check out all the options.

the amateur racing action has been on fire all thru out this series. the A riders had better pay attention to what’s going on behind them. it won’t be long that many of these fine racers will be bumping up to chase the awesome cash payouts the MDrA offers. names like baker, Harrington, Lee, and Yagloski come to mind. Ask the current experts, John Higbee just recently moved out of the b ranks and was knocking on the back door of chad Wages to take the number two spot in 125 A racing action.

in 85cc racing, broc Schmelyun was

back after an early season knee injury put him on the sidelines. broc came back as strong as ever and he took the win in the 85cc 12-15 A division. Also in 12 -15 b racing Josh Villarreal has really begun to get back to winning form. Josh spent most of last season on the sidelines and he is climbing his way back to the top.

As you are reading this the 2006 MDrA Series will have come to a close. it was another successful year with only one place to go and that’s up. their year end banquet and fun day will be taking place at Doublin gap on Saturday october 7th, check their ad elsewhere in this issue for ticket information. And be sure to stay tuned to the pages of MrA for all the exciting details on next years series.

• 29piston poppers tt scramBle

Thorndale, PA • September 10, 2006 • By MRAthe eastern PA Piston Poppers grounds are located

just along route 30 east in thorndale, PA. the club has been running tt Scrambles races there four times a year for as long as i can remember. it is the one place that i can go each year and see old racer friends that only dust off the leathers and fire up the old race bike that they keep in a corner of the garage for just these occasions. You never see them other places but you most always see them competing at Piston Poppers. Don’t be fooled though, Piston Poppers not only draws on the racers of yesteryear, they also draw some of the fastest young short trackers in the country today.

names like Mullen, Lynch and conlon. up and comers like cory texter, brandon robinson and Austin greenland. it’s almost like being at a national with just a taste of AHrMA thrown in. What’s the appeal? i guess just a good old tt Scramble, a few turns to the left, one to the right and a jump thrown in for good measure on the high speed back straight away.

177 racers came out to compete in the third race of the year here. And not just the pro’s, the amateur and youth races were loaded as well. Matter of fact, some of the best racing of the day came in the 50cc four stroke divisions. that’s right, young racers on good old Honda crF 50’s. Probably the most ridden mini bike of all time and here these young hot shots are ripping up the Piston Poppers course launching what could be a career of a lifetime. the action was tight and in the end it would be colin cunningham taking home the victory.

other 50cc action saw riders compete in the Junior 4-6 division. Devin owens (1ne) would chase Dylan Almony the entire race, the two being only feet apart. owens wowed the crowd by making the pass on the final lap to take the checkers and the win.

the 60cc classes were red hot as well. Local 60cc short track favorite Jeremiah Snow was on hand as well as D6 harescramble racer Walter bond, throw in an MX racer named broc emery and the eventual race winner cole gabel. emory would give gabel a run for his money in the main but he ended up overshooting turn three after making the pass on the high speed straight. gable would go on to win, followed by Snow and Jeffery Hall.

in expert racing action, Pro racer Donny Mullen would dominate both the open A and

Sportsman divisions with Jason conlon running a distant second. the battles were intense further back in the pack, but Mullen made it look easy on the familiar Piston Poppers course.

check back on october the 8th for the final race of the year. the racing action is red hot, the gate fees are low and the chili can’t be beat. the event will again be sponsored by brian Hoskins Ford from coatesville, PA. be sure to view event photos from today at www.mcracingaction.com.

bromley Motorcycle Sales is a family owned and operated business located in trevose, PA just a mile and a half off the Pennsylvania turnpike. bromley’s was founded in 1959 by robert and Jean bromley. in the early years they offered Zundapp and bSA motorcycles and have carried many major brands over the years including Ducati, norton and bMW just to name a few.

today bromley Motorcycles is a full service facility offering Motorcycles and AtV’s from Suzuki, KtM, Polaris and Victory. they cater to street and off road riders alike and they operate a large race team out of their dealership that features riders from many disciplines of motorcycle and AtV racing. bromley’s original race team consisted of their three sons, Steve, Joe and bill who run the dealership today. not only are all three involved with the day to day operations at the shop, they all spend endless hours volunteering their services to the racing community.

the racing heritage of the bromley’s dates back to their father bob who raced Pro Dirt track starting in 1947 with his last race being a road race at Daytona international Speedway in 1968. Steve, Joe and bill have been racing since they were boys and Joe alone has 26 years of service with AMA

District 6 and is the current president of that organization.

the tradition continues at bromley’s as Joes sons, Joe and Danny follow in the footsteps of their father, grandfather and uncles. both compete in harescramble and dirtrack racing and between the two they race in 7 different classes and have 14 machines to keep ready at any given time. talk about living and loving motorcycles. Did i mention that Joe and Steve still compete and every now and then you can even catch bill with a leg over one of his favorite flat track machines? Joe and bill’s wives have also gotten in on the act and six years ago they formed the bP Promotions PA State Harescramble Series. it’s a twelve round series for off road racers that continues to grow each year and carries major sponsors such as MSr and Answer racing.

Anyhow, if you are looking for a great dealership to do business with, please check out bromley Motorcycles in eastern, Pennsylvania. they have the brands you love with a fully stocked parts and accessories department and an award winning service department.

We caught up with local Pro expert rider barry carsten over Labor Day Weekend at Sleepy Hollow’s ultimate MX Series race. barry promised us an interview earlier in the year and this was the first opportunity we had to sit down with him since then. barry has been out chasing the AMA toyota Motocross championship points aboard his bromley Suzuki just as he has for the past eight seasons. Matter of fact, barry was racing at Sleepy the day after the Steel city national just as he does every year. it’s maybe just one more reason why many people refer to him as “the iron Man”.

it all started many years ago when at the young age of five barry started riding his Honda Mini trail 50 around the family’s property very close to the new Jersey Sea

Shore. barry was content to do this for several years when at the age of 12 he decided to give racing a try. the carsten family headed off to the race track with their 1979 YZ 80 and the rest is what they say, history.

barry competed locally until 1986 and then he headed off to give his first pro race a try. He qualified for every national he entered that year but he couldn’t get into the top 20 no matter how hard he tried. that was when he made the commitment to get in shape and to give it his all in the upcoming season.

that next season barry trained and rode hard and ended up finishing the year with national #65. barry enjoyed his accomplishments and racing with the best in the business, his hard work and determination allowed him to carry a top 100 number every year from 1987 to 2004. barry’s lowest number he earned in that time span was the #31 with the highest being # 96. Matter of fact, 2005 was only the second year since he began racing Pro that barry didn’t earn a top 100 spot. in talking to barry he told me that was the year he made his most money ever competing, he just couldn’t get the number to go with it.

in 2006 barry found himself back in the ranks of the elite as he rides # 84 this year. He believes he should end up in the top 100 again for 2007 but it all depends on the mathematics and how some of the other privateers end out their season, he’s close and feels pretty confident he’ll be there.

“the iron Man” barry carsten. Pro racer, husband, father, business owner, coach and all around nice guy. if you see him at the races be sure you say hi and make sure you watch him ride. He’s one guy, no matter what the circumstances are; he always seems to be out in front. i asked him how long he’s going to keep doing it and he looked at me and said,

“As long as i can”. thanks barry.

fiNAL ROUND - WPSA ATv TOURRaceway Park • August 19-20, 2006 • by Scott Lukaitis

National Quad Tour Visits Englishtown.By Scott LukaitisAugust 19-20, 2006

on a site normally reserved for motorcycles the WPSA and its traveling series brought quads to old bridge township’s raceway Park for the final two rounds of its inaugural series. the WPSA tour featured amateur quad racing in all classes as well as two premier classes. With the richest purse in AtV racing, $22,500 for each round, some of the best in the sport would compete in the Super Quad Pro 450 and Quad terrain challenge classes. eSPn 2 television cameras were on hand all season long covering the event for one hour shows to be shown about 2-3 weeks after each round.

the main track which over the years has hosted the who’s who of professional motocross would now be the site of a championship battle that would go down to the final race in the Super Quad 450 pro premier class. in addition a challenging obstacle course complete with mud, logs and boulders was built on the infield and would confront the riders in the Quad terrain challenge which also would have the championship decided in the final race of the season.

going into the final weekend of the season team Suzuki Yoshimura’s Doug gust held a scant one point lead over east coast AtV Honda rider Dustin Wimmer. With gust’s teammate Jeremiah Jones sitting in third

and out due to his recent injury it was clear that the championship would be decided by these two riders. Would it be the crafty veteran gust or the charging newcomer Wimmer taking the championship home. With each rider winning their first heat in the round robin qualifying format and gust getting the better of Wimmer in the second round the championship would be decided in the late afternoon final. Whoever won the moto would take the championship. in the final moto of the season local hero travis Spader grabbed the early holeshot and put his Progressive Suspension Yamaha out front but he was quickly displaced by Wimmer who tried to break out to an early advantage. but gust wasn’t about to see his championship go away. He closed on Wimmer and went for the move in the middle of the moto. gust got by, but Wimmer wasn’t going to let him go so quickly and went by gust on the very next lap. gust would again get by Wimmer but this time for good. gust went on to pull a small lead and on the final lap with arms in the air gust crossed the finish line, the new champion. His family and friends greeted him at the line and even before he could get a drink he was doused with the victory champagne. Wimmer crossed the line for second in the moto as well as for the season.

the Quad terrain challenge championship would also go down to the final moto of the season. rath racing Artic cat rider Daryl rath held a one point lead going into the weekend’s racing and wasn’t going to be denied the championship. consistent finishes were all he needed to take home the title and with finishes of second and eighth in

his qualifiers a fifth place was all he needed in the main to take home the championship awards. can Am rider rory beckman was the first man out of the rock crawl first and eyed up a victory. Fellow can-Am rider Scott Kilby jumped his way into the lead and would go on for the victory as well as second in the final points behind rath. Suzuki rider William Yokley, who was second going into the final round, had to settle for third in the series after a final moto mechanical failure forced him to finish eleventh.

Due to the great turnout and exciting racing action raceway Park will host both the opening and closing rounds of the series. the opener is April 14th and 15th and the final round is August 18th and 19th. be sure to mark them on your schedule for next season as a can’t miss event. check www.wpsaracing.com for details.

rain, rain go away come again another day. this has been the mantra for raceway Park this season as Mother nature has decided to rear her ugly head on many occasions this season at old bridge townships raceway Park. You would be hard pressed to remember a race this season that did not feature some rain either

the night before or the day of a event. Such was the case again on the 27th of August as torrential rains faced the riders getting ready for practice in the morning. the monsoon type precipitation had already forced the cancellation of Saturdays Peewee and Pit bike racing and due to the horrendous track condition Sunday’s event was changed to a

one moto winner take all format. With only one moto deciding the winner

the holeshot was all important and nikki Stewart knew it. At the start of the women’s class moto nikki blasted off the line on her Dragon optical backed Yamaha YZ125 and grabbed the holeshot only to go down in the treacherous conditions allowing other Yamaha riders Jennifer Singleton and erica rizzo and the rest of the ladies by. Singleton on the earthquake racing backed machine inherited the lead and tried to put a gap on the field. Stewart was quickly back up and setting off to catch as many riders as possible. by the end of the first lap she was back into fourth and had the leaders in her sights. by the time rizzo made the pass on Singleton for the lead Stewart was already in third. When rizzo bobbled in the front section of the track Singleton again went into the lead. now Singleton lead with rizzo still in second with Stewart closing quickly and then rizzo went down on a rough straight allowing Stewart into second. by now the mud was starting to get more slippery and caused Singleton to bobble handing the lead to Stewart. by now it was Stewart’s turn to lead and she began to stretch the gap on the field. Singleton kept her in sight because anything can happen in the mud. And anything did happen. in the very last turn on the track Stewart went down and Singleton stole the victory. Stewart was quickly back up and rolled across the finish line in second. rizzo picked her bike up from an earlier mishap and worked her way into third by the moto’s end.

ft of mountain harescramBleRound #8 • PA State Series • September 3, 2006 • by MRA

As is the norm the last few years, Ft of Mountain has held a PA State Harescramble round at their facility over the Labor Day weekend. this year brought round # 8 to the mountain along with a Saturday evening chicken barbeque and a special PA State riders meeting. bP Promotions holds this meeting to gain insight and recommendations on how to improve their series each year. this year it seems the rider’s biggest concern, as in the past is how to improve the scoring for the overall series. Series promoter Joe bromley discussed with the riders the possibility of bringing electronic scoring on board for next season. All in attendance agreed that this could improve the series greatly.

Sunday morning awoke to overcast conditions but it wasn’t long until things started to clear off and till mid afternoon the sun had started to find its way thru the clouds. Days prior to the event brought some much needed rain to the area and it actually provided some great racing conditions.

the first race of the day brought the Pee Wee motorcycle classes to staging. the younger groups are run on the grass track only and the motorcycles and quads now have their own time slot to allow for better racing conditions.

in 50cc racing action, noah Koeller won the stock division with Wyatt Vugrinel taking the checkers in the much better attended oil injected class. in youth AtV racing Alexus

Wiginton was your 50cc champion while brian thorson brought home the win in the 70cc group.

next up was the youth divisions with Supermini first off the gate. this allowed Jacobus Ferreira to get out to an early lead over

85cc points leader cody Mummert. Mummert was able to catch and pass Ferreira on the third

lap but he couldn’t put a lot of distance on him. After an hour on the tough Ft of

Mountain course, Mummert came thru the barrels with Ferreira right on his rear fender. other youth class winners included taylor Pecika in a tight battle with Jordan barnett in the 100/150 4 stroke class and ethan Jaudas in 65cc racing action.

the motorcycle main came next with two KtM fast guys jumping out to the early lead. cycle tech’s Jerod Stoner and former motocrosser Jed Haines were tire to tire as they came out of the woods on the first lap and back onto the grass track section of the course. As luck would have it, Stoner lost his front end in the grass and when he went down he damaged his clutch hose causing him to DnF. Haines inherited the lead and started to cruise on the rest of the pack. the 200 A class winner on the day, Jason Sipe was not far behind but was never able to close the gap on the faster Haines. Haines did need to stop later in the race as he lost his seat somewhere out on the course.

Always the true sportsman, Stoner heard of the dilemma and flagged Haines down at the barrels to lend him his seat and he raced on to victory.

in the late afternoon AtV divisions, gncc racer chris borich came to town as he always does on the off weekends. borich, a hometown favorite lead the AtV main from start to finish with Andris Lagzolins finishing second and thomas Kontz rounding out the top three. Dylan Ferguson won the 91 -200 two and four Stroke division with David rese taking the utility class win.

dutchmen mx parkRound #12 • Ultimate MX Series • September 3, 2006 • By jimmucklinphotography.com

its official folks, the Dutchmen is under new ownership. And to begin with, i would like to thank the former Flying Dutchmen Motorcycle club for close to half a century of service to the members of AMA District 6. they began many years ago running scrambles and short track. Later on they switched to motocross and harescrambles. they had a clubhouse for us to hang out in and they threw a whopper of a year end banquet and i wish the best to all who were involved.

next i’d like to thank the new owners, the robert Papp family. in a day and age when so many things can easily be taken away from us, they have stepped up to the plate to offer us the new Dutchmen MX Park. i’m sure it won’t be me, but hopefully 50 years from now somebody may be passing on a special thank you to them for their years of service.

the Dutchmen is alive and well and most importantly it is still a Motorcycle and AtV competition facility. rob Papp tells me they are still going to offer racing for both bikes and quads and that he will offer both motocross and harescramble events. i’m sure there may be many changes coming down the road, but in any good business

there is always change.i would ask that the

members of AMA District 6 and the surrounding regions visit and support the new DMX as it will become to be known. Sign up for a race and bring a friend to watch. Let’s support the future of racing in our region and show the new folks that we’re grateful.

i wasn’t able to make the opener personally, but please enjoy the images of

Jimmucklinphotography.com and check the results here to see how your favorite racer did. DMX will be switching over to the harescramble course in the coming months and they will be offering electronic scoring at their november 5th date. Stay tuned to MrA and the current website www.flyingdutchmenmc.net for all of the exciting details.

SLeePY hOLLOW MOTOCROSSRound #13 • Ultimate MX Series • September 4, 2006 • By MRA

Labor Day Monday brought over 500 racers to Sleepy Hollow for round # 13 of the District 6 ultimate MX series. it was part two of the annual Labor Day double header where many D6 racers compete at Dutchmen on Sunday and then stay over for Sleepy on Monday. this year’s Sleepy event was also a fundraiser for injured expert rider ty Wallace.

the event started with a donation from the Pagoda Motorcycle club. Several members of their crew came to work at Sleepy days before the event to prep the track for the ultimate race. they then donated their wages to Wallace in the form of a check for $ 500.00, way to go Pagoda. A silent auction was also held to raise money and Sleepy changed their annual Mechanics race into a ride for ty. All proceeds from the sign up were awarded to Wallace and his family.

in expert racing action, bromley Suzuki’s barry carsten made the trek from the Steel city national that was held the day before to compete for the Suzuki contingency that was being offered on the day. carsten finished 24th in the national then loaded up and came to Sleepy on Monday to win three expert divisions, 250A, 25 + A and Vet A. to top it all off, carsten has been doing this longer than just about anybody else around, way to go barry.

Some of the best racing of the day came in the School boy division with team green’s Lowell Spangler lining up against Lebanon Valley cycles Dennis Johns. the two would swap moto wins with Johns coming away with the victory. the same battle ensued in the two stroke division as well with Spangler getting the win there.

As you’re reading this, Sleepy’s last race of the season is approaching on october 8th. they will have a regular format at the bike track with a D6 AtV Points event on the quad track. they also have a “Meet and greet” scheduled for november 11th at Lebanon Valley cycles in Jonestown, PA. the shop is just a few miles from the track and light refreshments will be offered as well as year end awards being distributed. the cost is $0 and all are invited.

Like it or not, the 4-stroke is here to stay. this is finally evident by Honda’s recent announcement that they will discontinue all 2-strokes after 2007. one of the most frequent maintenance tasks that seem to scare many riders is valve adjustment. Let’s take the mystery out of this procedure.

First off, adjustment should be made to a cold engine. You will need to remove your gas tank and cylinder head cover. You’ll also want to remove your spark plug. on the magneto cover you’ll need to remove the two inspection plugs. Set the piston to tDc (top dead center) on the compression stroke using a t-handle wrench to rotate the crankshaft. refer to your owner’s service manual for timing marks. Most engines have an “i” or “t” mark that aligns with a pointer on the magneto cover. the lobes will point away from each other on the compression stroke. You can also check by watching the intake valves opening and closing as the piston nears tDc. refer to your manual for proper clearance. You’ll need a feeler gauge to check clearance. i like the ones offered by Motion Pro with an angled bend.

if your valves need adjustment, you’ll need to remove the cams for “bucket” style cams. before you start, write down the clearance of each valve. it’s best to make a diagram to avoid confusion. You’ll also want to write down the size of the existing shim. if you’re a first timer, it might be a good idea to mark the cam chain position on the cam sprocket. i use “white

out” from a stationary store for marking engine parts when needed. Marking the position will provide you with some double assurance that you have everything assembled correctly when you re-install the cam chain. use a piece of wire to hold the cam chain from dropping into the crankcase. Holding tension on the chain to keep it on the lower sprocket on the crankshaft. You’ll also need to remove your cam chain tensioner.

When the cams are removed it’s a good idea to put a clean rag over the crankcase opening to avoid dropping any small parts (like your valve shims). remove the camshafts and then the lifters (or “buckets”). A valve lapper tool or small suction cup makes removing the lifers easy.

Many service manuals contain a chart allowing you to match the clearance and existing shim. the chart will tell you what size shim to install and eliminate the “trial and error” method. After you’ve changed all necessary shims, re-install the lifters and camshafts. use a good assembly lube containing molybdenum disulfide on the shims and engine oil on the lifters. Make sure the lifters move freely. tighten the camshaft cap bolts in a cross pattern, referring to your manual for torque specs. Most cam sprockets have a mark that lines up with the edge of your cylinder head surface. these marks should be lined up when the timing marks are at tDc. rotate the crankshaft twice and check the valve clearance. Hopefully you’ll be within spec. otherwise, you’ll have to try again. Don’t forget to set your cam chain tensioner.

the technology of the current 4-strokes is becoming better each year. the valves and seats are being constructed of better materials thus enabling valve maintenance to be required less often.

The Landing MX • September 10, 2006 • By Matt WozneyThe 2nd Annual MX for Life Benefit RideEaston, MarylandStory & Photos by: holeshotgraphics.com

the 2nd annual MX for Life benefit ride was another huge success this year at the Landing MX Park in easton, Maryland. the MX for Life ride is a six hour marathon ride, in which teams are set up to four riders of their choice. then, a sponsor or team leader backs the team by paying for their sign up costs. those riding fees are then donated straight to the fund for the children’s national Medical center in Washington, D.c. A silent auction at the end of the day also raised more money, thanks to many top pro national riders who donated their gear for the cause. not just gear was donated. items such as the sharp looking framed photos signed by ricky carmichael, Jeremy Mcgrath, and nathan ramsey, full

sized thor banners featuring chad reed and Jeremy Mcgrath, copies of Hg Films’ Moto Xposure video, and even a Dr. Pepper electric scooter were only a fraction of the items that were auctioned off to help the

cause. “i am very happy on how this event went last year”, says David Segal, owner of the Landing MX Park. “We raised well over $25,000 for the children’s national

Medical center last year. the hospital supports what we are doing here and we just want to give back to the community for a worthy cause.” For 2006, the Landing MX Park raised another $25,000+, making a total over $50,000 the past two years for pediatric cancer research in all.

the MX for Life program is definitely different than your

average race day. the goal of each team is to ride the most laps they can in a six hour period of time, and thus, receiving lots of prizes and giveaways at the end of the day, thanks to the numerous sponsors who

support the ride. these sponsors donated to the cause and for the riders who sustained one rigorous day of riding on the Landing’s motocross track. the lap counting was performed by trackside and transponders placed on the rider’s boot were used to count the laps as the riders went by. once a rider has ridden to his/her limit, they pull off to a designated pit stop, in which a team member switches their transponder to the next rider who is lined up to go next. “We want to

give the riders the ultimate test out there and give them a fun day of riding at the same time”, Segal states. At the end of the day, a large silent auction and awards ceremony was held and the folks at Alabama bbQ fed the riders with their tasty sandwiches and of course, a side of their delicious beans!

Last year, team Holeshot graphics won the 1st annual MX for Life by one lap over a stacked gncc crew with their rider lineup of tyler Wozney, Michael Anderson, Joel Adams, and Matt grace. this year, Holeshot graphics had a solid team with tyler, Michael, Joel coming back and new team member Jesse Kuzbyt joining the squad. the team put together a more dominating ride this year by winning by a solid five laps over second place team Advantage excavations. rider endurance and stamina and clean pit stops made

the difference as Holeshot graphics came away by winning two in a row! taking the last spot on the box was the rather b riding team, who improved from their fifth place finish from last year. Fourth was the blue Diamond team which included WMA national rider Jessye Davis and top local mini prospect greg Sidebothom. rounding out the top five was the gLtr team.

the Landing MX Park and children’s national Medical center continue to have a strong bond for this event each year. the response and support for pediatric cancer research just out of one day of riding is amazing. of course, none of this would happen without the sponsors who supported the ride day and more importantly, the cause. these sponsors are children’s national Medical center in Washington, D.c, Holeshot graphics, Hg Films, one industries, Moose racing, edy’s ice cream, Monster energy, Pete’s cycle, Powersports east, Parts unlimited, Dragon, no Fear, Mason Dixon riding Association, Delmarva MX Series, imperial Limousines, ogio, uni Filters, Hinson clutch components, cambridge Motorsports, Scott uSA, Vison graphics, troy Lee Designs, thor, Fly racing, Answer racing, talbot Powersports, Diamond Motorsports, eVS Sports, blue Diamond Park, MSr, Maryland Motocross, Pro taper, Middle Atlantic Motocross Association, Alabama bbQ, gatorade, tucker rocky, AMA, and K&D Parts and Accessories.

the most recent MDrA event at Happy ramblers gave me the opportunity to meet two exceptional people. tom and tim Whitehair are identical twins and they have been in motocross competition for 27 years. their parents took them to see their first race at Appalachia Lake in 1976. two years later they began their racing career in

District 5 competing at High Point – Steel city and Mt. Morris. in 1984 they moved to Southern Maryland and began competing in District 6 and 7.

in the early 1980’s tim competed at the national level on bike #634. other accomplishments include tim’s 3rd in the 35+ class and their 4th and 5th place finishes in the Senior A class in District 7 in 2005. currently they are both in the top 10 in District 7 and in the top 20 in the

MDrA series.tim and tom both compete on Suzuki

rMZ450 bikes and would like to thank their sponsors – De-cal Works – Sunline – 661 – cycra – Morgantown Suzuki – gaerne boots and their own company, Dist. Janitorial repairs co., inc. which they have operated for the past 20 years.

As they travel from race to race their biggest supporter is Dan, their beagle, providing companionship and affection. At the end of each day they wish to praise god and be thankful for all he has bestowed upon us. they wish to encourage all riders and are always there to lend a helping hand for as they say, “every rider is a champion”.

race tech’s new G2R Valvesby al carrwww.reactive-suspension.com

Since about 1976 one of the major focuses by both the factories and the aftermarket has been suspension. We started with forward mounted shocks, then cantilever, then single shock. We had Monoshock, uni-trak, Pro-Link and Full Floater, all distinctly different systems that paved the way for our current rear suspensions.

Forks went from spindly 36mm tubes to 38 to 41, 43, 45, 46 and now 47 and 48. We started with damper rods and now we have cartridges. tuning these systems has become big business, just look at the number of outfits focusing on

building the perfect suspension. Leading the way in this endeavor has

to be race tech. owner Paul thede created the template for a suspension business that has been copied by nearly every other suspension company that has followed in his wake.

race techs focus is on componentry that can be retro-fitted to stock shocks and forks, vastly improving their performance. Many of us are familiar with their gold Valve kits and their range of fork and shock springs. now race tech has introduced the g2r Second generation gold Valves.

the majority of riders would look at the new valves and see only a cosmetic change but someone like myself who works with this kind of thing day in and day out can see a quantum leap forward in valving technology. the level of tunability available to a suspension tech like myself to more finely tune the suspensions performance has reached a whole new level. Supercross, Supermoto, road race, Motocross, enduro or Hare Scrambles, all these different aspects of motorcycle racing will benefit from a more highly focused valving set up.

other valving systems including stock all offer basically the same number of options, but the g2r adds two more to the equation. the first is the ability to build a pre loaded stack. We can still have zero preload if the application calls for it but we now have the option of a .1mm or .2mm preload on the first stage stack. this preload dictates at what pressure the first stage stack begins operating relative to the externally adjustable compression circuit. initially plush or initially firm or anything in between can now be achieved with this circuit.

the second option is the ability to specify how much fluid flow area we want in the valve itself. this allows us to address bottoming resistance without adversely affecting the rest of the valve stacks characteristics. A supercross set up would have minimal fluid flow while an enduro set up might utilize the maximum setting.

i’m sure that a lot of suspension tuners had the same initial reaction to the g2r valve as i had, “man, i wish i’d thought of that” As an authorized race tech center i’m glad that it was Paul thede at race tech that came up with it because it allows me to supply my customers with the best suspension on the market and if you’ve been thinking about having your suspension set up, but couldn’t decide where to go, that decision just got a whole lot easier.

As always if you have any questions you can call me at the shop or catch me at the races, till then, keep the rubber side down.

PRESS RELEASESeptember 15, 2006 American Honda Announcement on Future Motocross Products

American Honda recently advised dealers that its current line of two-stroke motocross machines will be discontinued after the 2007 model year.

“this decision reflects Honda’s commitment to environmental leadership in the markets in which we compete,” stated Honda Motorcycle Division Senior Vice President, ray blank.

“u.S. market trends and the success of Honda’s revolutionary unicam™ four stroke motocross and off-road machines, bolstered by the 2007 crF150r, make this a logical evolution of our product line.”

local racer Jake Johnson is the first-ever ama Grand national singles Champion.

the inaugural AMA Ford Quality checked Flat track championship/AMA grand national Singles championship came to an end with the Springfield Short track on Saturday night, the race win going to Quality checked-certified Pre-owned Ford’s chris carr and the championship going to Suzuki’s Jake Johnson.

carr became the seventh different winner in the seven-race series, the Pennsylvania resident getting the holeshot and never looking back as he led all 25 laps for his 75th grand national victory.

behind him, Johnson had everyone’s attention as he crashed but managed to get

up and still finish ninth - a spot that earned him the title first-ever AMA grand national Singles champion.

Johnson came into the night with an 11-point lead over Joe Kopp with Henry Wiles, Johnny Murphree and Jr Schnabel all having mathematical chances of earning the title. Kopp, Murphree and Schnabel, however, all failed to make the main event, giving Johnson the breathing room he needed. Kenny coobeth finished second in the national with Henry Wiles ending up third.

Johnson ended the night with a 13-point cushion over Wiles. Kopp ended the series in third, just one point ahead of carr.
