Distribution InformationPlease Read

the following information is very important as to how you will receive your copy of “Motorcycle racing Action” (MrA) in the upcoming season. in the past MrA has always been a free publication to our readers, which was distributed at race tracks and thru dealer advertisers. We have also offered paid subscriptions for those of you that wanted to make sure you did not miss any of the great racing action found here in our pages. Many of you have taken advantage of that for one reason or the other and for that, “we thank you”. Your support and patronage have allowed us to grow and by your contributions we have been able to provide even more race coverage to the local racers of this region. Please remember that 95% of this publication has been and always will be paid for by the advertisers in these pages. if you can, please support them when you need to purchase anything regarding our great sport.

our distribution methods in some cases are changing this year and we hope that everyone will be pleased with the changes. if you are an MDrA member, nothing has changed. Last year your organization contracted us to provide each MDrA member with a discounted copy of MrA by direct mail. We covered your series and sent you all a copy and everyone seemed to enjoy that. if you are planning on renewing your card for this season you need not do anything. Your copy of MrA will arrive in the mail as always.

if you purchase a District 6 motocross card for 2006 you will now receive a copy of MrA by direct mail as part of your membership fees. the promoters of District 6 have formed a new motocross committee this year in the hopes of providing a better overall racing experience for the members of the district. Part of that experience is being able to keep the members informed and to provide race coverage for your new D6 ultimate MX Series thru the pages of MrA.

if you are a Hare Scrambles racer or possibly a Dirt track racer, maybe you are a race fan or family member and would still like to receive MrA by mail, we have a special offer for you. Please log onto our website at www.mcracingaction.com where you can purchase a discounted subscription to MrA for the year 2006. click on the white box that says “Hare Scrambles Promotion” and you will be directed on how to get signed up.

Lastly, we will still offer a reduced number of Free issues at select tracks and dealerships due to the fact that there are always new racers attending events that may not be familiar with MrA. our intention is to still provide the best monthly amateur race coverage available in our area. Your racing organizations agree with us, the best way to promote your sport is thru you the participants of the sport.

We thank you all for supporting MrA, no matter what the capacity. We look forward to seeing you all at the races this season and please remember. Any questions, you can see me at the track or contact us by email or phone. [email protected] or (717) 872-8782.

Sincerely – Jim bull MrA

District #: 10

experience: riding since age 4, racing since age 11

hobbies: Soccer, baseball, Snow boarding and Water Skiing

Fav. racer: Mike Lafferty

sponsors: DeLong’s exxon, Fredco Management, geiger Machine, graphic Visions, nAPA of Morgantown, Sagner tile, cumberland Kawasaki, Scott uSA, Moose gear, r.o.r.r., family & friends

Future goals: My future dream would be to become a professional dirt bike racer, if that doesn’t work out maybe get into the medical field.

Andrew DeLong from Morgantown, PA rounds out our list of Harescramble Hotshots from the 2005 season. not that we placed them in any particular order, but Andrew would certainly sit towards the top of the list. i’m sure that there were many candidates that deserved it but didn’t make it in this year. the good news is the season is on it’s way and that opens up the need for a whole new group of Hotshots. Please keep us posted on your

results as we are always looking for potential candidates.now, on to Andrew. Andrew has been a consistent finisher since he started competing.

Andrew has been riding since the young age of 4 but he didn’t get serious about racing until he was 11. Andrew says that he has to thank his dad for getting him started in the sport. His father rode since he was young and has passed it on to Andrew. Andrew said “the reason he does this sport is because of the excitement and thrill, i just love to ride”.

in his first year 2002 he won the 10 -11 year old 85cc division. the following season he had to move up to the 12-15 division where he finished a solid 7th. Again in 2004 he bumped up to the Supermini division and ended the season with a 4th overall.

2005 was the year that Andrew has really developed. in his second season riding the big wheel bike he took the region by storm. Andrew kept very busy this past year by trying to compete in all three of the local racing series. the result, two out of three championships. my bet is he probably would have won all three if scheduling conflicts weren’t an issue.

Andrew took first place overall in the eceA Youth Harescramble Series while winning the Supermini title. in the District 6 Series he won Supermini and he placed third in the PA State Hare Scramble Series. Definitely Hotshot status as far as i’m concerned.

Watch out for Andrew this season, he’s bumping up again and he has a new ride thru Factory KtM. Andrew will campaign out of Matto cycle in Pottsville, PA while chasing the 200b title in 2006. We would like to thank Andrew and his family for their time and we wish you the best in your future racing endeavors.

randy Mann hard at work.

By: Dave Hayesimagine you roll up to the starting gate at

a local motocross race and a guy on an Xr 400 rolls up next to you. Your first thought is, this guy has got to be nuts. then you start to worry that he might loop it out of the gate and take you out in the process. then the gate drops and the Xr guy is gone, i mean gone, he is so far ahead it confuses you. Many racers faced this dilemma when randy Mann started racing. He was the Xr guy. now he’s a crF guy and this is where the story gets interesting.

i have heard it said that necessity is the mother of invention. randy Mann of FastMann racing is living proof of that saying. When i first saw randy at the race track he was riding an Xr 400. the Xr is not your prototypical MX bike by a long shot. but randy’s results got people thinking: What does this guy know about motorcycle mechanics that makes him so fast on a trail bike? Well, it turns out the answer is randy

has a background in engineering and has taken quite a few suspension modification courses. However, all the knowledge in the world won’t make you adept at tuning suspension and engines if you don’t have the equipment, tools and skills necessary to satisfy your customers when they hand you their bike and say “make it better”. randy races and he does it well. Just ask his competitors. More importantly he has the uncanny ability to modify and dial in a bike to each rider’s ability level and riding style. that’s a skill that should not go un-noticed by people like us. We all want our bikes to work better in certain situations, but most of us don’t need a “Factory” bike. We need our bikes to work best for us! it’s that simple.

i have to tell you, randy worked on my crF 450 and i have been so impressed with the suspension modifications that i wanted to let everyone know just how great his product is. i recently sat down with randy in his shop located in Mercersburg, PA to talk about his business philosophy and goals for the future, and this is what he had to say.

MRA: How long have you been in business?

Randy: We have been offering our services since 1998.

MRA: When you started, what type of business was it?

Randy: We started doing all types of performance engine, suspension, and carburetion work.

MRA: What type of services do you offer now?

Randy: We offer everything from suspension service to complete re-valve, re-spring work and other internal modifications. We do complete engine re-builds, crank service, head work, including valve jobs and valve guide replacements. We are in the process of upgrading our facilities to include extensive head porting and flowing on our new Superflow Flowbench. We will also be offering Dyno and tuning services on our new computerized SuperFlow cycleDyn Pro.

MRA: can you tell me a little bit about your suspension modification philosophy?

Randy: in the past it was always necessary to change the pistons. because of their design, they just didn’t flow like they should. now with newer designs and technology in most applications, the stock pistons have plenty of flow. typically i set up the valving and oil volume for the rider’s weight and his riding style; also taking into account if they are riding woods or motocross. the rider’s skill is assessed as well. i may also change the chamber springs on the Showa suspension to increase the plush feeling without sacrificing bottoming resistance. on the shock we do the same but we can modify the adjuster, which in turn gives a much plusher ride without sacrificing bottoming resistance.

MRA: now that more people are riding 250F Four Strokes there seems to be a need to find more power. How do you plan to service that aspect of the business?

Randy: Well that’s where the Flowbench and the Dyno come in. With the Flow bench will be able to get a lot more power out of the engine by maximizing the head work we can do. We can work with some different cams and exhaust systems prior to putting the machine on the Dyno. then we put the machine on the Dyno, which has software that will analyze the exhaust, and enable us to fine tune the jetting as well. this will allow all the modifications to work together.

MRA: in the past you did not offer this level of engine modification and tuning. is that because you did not have a Flow bench?

Randy: You can not do quality head work without a flowbench or a Dyno, and we will be offering both! this equipment will take away all the guess work and the ‘by the seat feel.’ it will show you the facts through the Dyno’s tuning software.

MRA: What is the best way for people to ship suspension components to your shop?

Randy: For those within driving distance they can bring their bike or remove the components and drop them off. uPS or Fedex service is another option. if they bring the bike in, i can set the sag and use our test track to evaluate the performance and set the clickers as well. that’s all included in the price.

MRA: the shop is centrally located to riders from Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia and Virginia. customers can find directions on your web site that are correct?

Randy: there is a link on the web site, http://fastmannracing.com/ to Mapquest.

MRA: What is the normal turn around for the majority of your services?

Randy: When a customer contacts us, we can discuss the work to be performed. typically a bike is turned around in one to two weeks when the job is scheduled to come in. in some cases, for racers, we turn them around the same week.

MRA: How about a success story, is there a rider who has benefited from your services that you would like to talk about?

Randy: i have quite a few fast local guys who use our services but one rider in particular, Steven Helton, was running in 10th to 12th place at Doublin gap in his races on average. When he got his suspension back from FastMann, his average finish improved to 3rd place. His feedback was that with his stock suspension he was getting tired by the third lap. After the FastMann modifications, he was able ride a lot harder for longer periods of time without getting tired.

MRA: Where do you see your shop in three years regarding the types of services you will offer?

Randy: We want to start gearing toward doing more extensive head work, utilizing the flow bench and Dyno, and getting into the more technical end of suspension work.

MRA: Do you offer trackside service?

Randy: Yes, we have a box-trailer we take to all the MDrA

races and other select events. We stock all the consumables and necessities to meet the rider’s needs. We can help set up the clickers on the suspension or do a valve adjustment. especially at the MDrA races, where there is a Saturday practice, we can do a valve adjustment after practice. Just call ahead before the weekend to make a reservation. We can also change tires and do jetting changes. When time is short and parts are necessary, contact us and we will bring along what you need to the track, i.e., tires, tubes, fluids, levers, spark plugs, etc.

MRA: thank you randyRandy: thank you!

Contact the “FastMann” if you are interested in our services or

have any questions, we should talk. Please feel free to contact us at any time.

Sportsman of the year went to the Hunter family.

Saturday night november 19, 2005 brought the bP Promotions PA State Hare Scrambles Series banquet in conjunction with the Flying Dutchmen Hare Scrambles Series banquet to the Flying Dutchmen hall in Pine grove, PA.

As usual it was a packed house showing just how dedicated the Hare Scrambles racers of this area truly are. the banquet was catered by the FDMc club members and again, as always the eats and service were second to none.

this was the 5th Annual banquet for bP Promotions and the second year that MSr, Answer racing and Pro taper were on board as major sponsors of the series. What a blessing this has been to the racers participating in the state races. there was over $20,000.00 worth of free merchandise given out again this year and close to half of that came in the way of MSr. Answer and Pro taper product giveaways, MSr bucks and MSr gear contracts. Kenda uSA tires is on board as a major tire sponsor along with other manufactures and local dealers the giveaways to the racers were astronomical.

2006 promises to be even bigger that last year. All sponsors are again intact and the folks from bP have

put out a challenge. this year riders earned $8000.00 worth of free gear from MSr and Answer gear. (See bP Promotions as to how you can become a part of this) the challenge – they want to giveaway over $10,000.00 from MSr, Answer and Pro taper in 2006. the bP State Series is the largest MSr program in the country to date.

this year’s series consists of 11 rounds put on at some of the best locations available in the state. this year’s series will not offer any double points rounds at the request of the riders. this year’s series has a triple crown Series built into the overall series. Any rider that wins their class at all three rounds will ride for free in 2007. this year’s series will offer Hi Point awards in different divisions in addition to riders of the year, sportsmanship and other categories. this year’s series, if you’re a Hare Scrambles racer, is the one to take a look at. You can find out information about this years series right here in the pages of MrA or you can contact bromley Motorcycles at (215) 357-1534.

the Hare Scramble banquet always draws a great crowd.

the Mason Dixon riding Association or the MDrA for short is rapidly becoming one of the best known race series on the east coast. they have accomplished many things in their first year as a new racing organization and from the looks of things it is only the tip of the iceberg.

in 2005 a group of local promoters from both north and south of the Mason Dixon line, many of them racers themselves decided that they wanted to create a manageable series for people to participate in, that would pay back to the rider. they wanted to create a series that people could become a part of, a place where they could not only race together but they could bring their families to socialize and enjoy their time off from work and school together. A series that didn’t break their banks, that looked at how to get the most ride time for the buck, a series called the MDrA.

in 2005 the MDrA ran a 12 race series that saw two rounds each at six different tracks. When you come to an MDrA event be prepared to spend the weekend, each

round offers a discounted Saturday practice day to all MDrA members. this not only allows a rider to get familiar with the course, it also offers lots of seat time to the racer. And isn’t that what it’s all about, time in the saddle?

the MDrA must be doing something right. in 2005 over their 12 race series they averaged just under 500 racers per event, 485 to be exact. their practice days were well attended and they had over 300 racers at their first ever awards banquet. And why not? the MDrA race Series is the only one of its kind that pays everything back to their riders thru year end awards and MDrA bucks that are redeemable at all MDrA

participating tracks. Just an example, the racer that won the 125 and 250A classes took home a total of $1600.00 combined. Where else can you do that?

For 2006 the series continues to get better. As a matter of fact it’s the first time in close to a decade that a local series attracted new Manufacturers contingency money. Yamaha took notice to what the MDrA has accomplished, they’ve added 6 MDrA dates to their contingency program and Suzuki has made a verbal commitment at the time of this printing to add dates to their schedule.

the MDrA has caught the attention of another giant in the motorcycle industry. this year’s series is being sponsored by

MSr, Answer racing and Pro taper. this is great news for the riders of this series. now in addition to the 40 % increase in year end payouts, riders also have a chance to earn free gear and partial gear sponsorships. the top three riders in 23 out of the 30 classes in the MDrA will receive free gear packages at the end of the year. in addition, and every rider racing in this series should take advantage of this offer. Any racer that purchases a set of MSr or Answer gear before the cut off date gets $120.00 in valuable coupons good at all motorcycle dealers that carry tucker rocky distributed parts. in addition to that even, racers who purchase the gear can earn points toward more free gear or partial gear contracts. Hey, you probably need new gear anyhow, why not wear something that’s going to pay you back. besides, it’s comfortable and it looks cool too.

Does it get better you ask? Sure it does. the MDrA has a tire sponsor in Kenda

tires, no matter what brand you currently use, racers can win tire vouchers for discounted tires thru Kenda uSA at each round. How about free gas? the MDrA will randomly give away a free gas card at each MDrA event in 2006. How about discounted practice days before each race and barbeque cook outs at select events. How about this? the

MDrA will have a rider representative at all events. russ Seibold has volunteered his efforts to make sure you get a great racing experience. if you have questions, suggestions or concerns, russ is the guy to see at the track. How about this? the MDrA will offer a race program at each round showing important information as well as up to date series points. Here’s another one. new for 2006 “the beast” energy Drink will be the official energy Drink of the MDrA. We can all use a little extra energy while at the track, watch for their displays. the MDrA gives you that “Mini national Atmosphere”, there will be vendor displays at all events with product and services available to keep you on the track. on top of all of that, and there certainly are many more perks than i have room to mention here. each MDrA member gets a copy of this great newspaper each month. We will be out covering your races and taking your pictures and providing you with all the information you need to have a successful racing season.

i had a chance to speak with the folks from the MDrA before i wrote this story. they are looking forward to seeing everyone in the new year. there are new major sponsors, there are many great local sponsors and there are many people involved in trying to provide you the racer with the best possible racing experience available. Payouts are up 40 % this year and all classes will receive year end awards. this year’s series will consist of 11 rounds at six different tracks. All locations are the same as last with one exception. Sleepy Hollow MX Park has come on board as a new facility replacing blue Diamond Park. blue Diamond has gone in a different direction this season so the MDrA has invited Sleepy Hollow to fill the slot. Sleepy is located just 20 miles from Harrisburg, PA and offers a proven facility that is safe yet challenging for all skills of riders.

Looking for a place to race? Why not check out the MDrA. it’s a well run series with the racer in mind. it provides exceptional racing with classes designed for all skill levels. it’s a series that pays you to race. it’s a series certainly worth checking out. round # 1 comes to us April 2, 2006 at the Hollow. You can meet up with the MDrA while at Motorama or check them out online at www.masondixonriding.com.

A modern motocross bike comes stock with an amazing suspension . Unfortunately, most riders never get to experience it fully . You see, most bikes are set for an Elusive ”Average Rider” . So, if you happen to be part of the small percentage of Average riders riding on average terrain, you’re in luck . Now, if you’re racing, jumping ramps or riding gnarly trails, you’re not getting the most out of your bike’s suspension .That’s where TBT Racing comes in.We start by asking questions . What’s your bike doing? Bottoming too easily? Back end dancing around in the whoops? Nervous or jittery in corners and on braking bumps? Afraid to hit doubles and whoops? Having your suspension properly dialed-in is the key to faster lap times and better bike control .

And that’s precisely what TBT is all about.Sure, you can try and do it from one of those” How To” guides in the magazines . But, honestly, your chances of doing it right are very small . And, most likely, you’ll end up making it worse .TBT Racing has been in the suspension and engine modification business for over 15 years . Working with Novice to Professional riders, getting them the most out of their machines . James Povolny, Ryan Huffman, Jason Thomas, Jo Oehlof, Ted Campbell, Robb Floth, All have used TBT Suspension and Engine mods to do battle in the AMA Supercross and Outdoor Nationals .If Off-road is your thing, Check out LANCE SMAILS TBT/Factory Kawasaki at a WORCS race near you!World Record Holder RYAN CAPES set the ramp to dirt distance record at + 260’ on a TBT suspension and engine prepared bike .Our suspension services include complete disassemble, cleaning and inspection . Then reassembled with the best Japanese fluids and parts available. During reassembly your TBT technician will ensure the proper spring rates and settings are in place to give you the best ride you have ever been on .

District 6 championship Points – ultimate MX Series championship. Which was it or which is it? For 2006 they are one in the same. For many years the AMA District 6 Sports Association, which is one of the largest AMA memberships in the country has run a championship points series which recognizes and awards racers for their performance in their individual classes. in years past, racers could compete at different D6 venues and accumulate points towards the year end championships. generally the racer that attended the most races and finished consistently would be the champion. it’s a great idea except for

the fact that a racer needs to race at least 25-30 weekends a year if he wants to have a shot at the title.

Within the last couple of years the promoters of District 6 realized with the rising prices of just about everything associated with racing that racers were struggling by trying to compete in all of these events. Hence, just a few short years ago the promoters of D6 decided to have a championship point’s series within their overall racing schedule. it was a great idea. it gave the racers of D6 different options.

now a racer if he chooses could participate in 16 – 18 races a year and still have a shot at a championship. each track in the district would be allotted two points races a year. Like i said, great idea until the district started to grow. All of the sudden with the new tracks that had joined the district, we were back up to 21 races. All good tracks, but still, too many races.

in 2005 a new series popped up on the scene called the “ultimate MX championship Series”. the series is being backed by industry giant, tucker rocky Distributing, the parent company of MSr, Answer racing and Pro taper. the promoter ran

this new series mostly in conjunction with District 6 championship Points races with the exception of a few rounds at tracks lying around the perimeter of District 6. Finally, a great sponsor to back our race series, but still more racing which equals more expenses.

in the fall of 2005, District 6 race promoters again met to try and find a solution to the situation they were again finding themselves in. A new motocross committee has been formed by the promoters of district 6 only. their goal was to find a way to provide the

best possible series and racing experience for the racers of their district.

the answer came in the form of the new District 6 ultimate MX championship Series. each promoter has been awarded two rounds each at their tracks; all races will be held at D6 facilities. We have a total of 18 races scheduled with MSr, Answer racing and Pro taper backing the series. one round at each facility will be awarded manufacturers contingency money with the second round offering double championship points. there will not be any drops allowed and racers must compete once during a scheduled point’s race at each facility to be eligible for year end awards.

the promoters of District 6 feel they are once again back on track. not only have they come up with a series that they believe will meet the needs of their members, they are now meeting as a group on a regular basis to fine tune the process as we go. they’ve increased the membership fees this season (the first increase in many years) in

the hopes of being able to offer better year end awards. not only to the champions, but they are looking at ways to offer incentives or awards to pay deeper into a class than they ever have before. in addition a portion of the new fees will go to provide each and every member with a copy of MrA each month to keep on top of happenings in the district and to provide you with the race coverage you truly love and deserve.

it sounds to me like the promoters of District 6 are definitely on track. they are organized and focused and bringing you a sponsor that is second to none. check the previous page here in MrA for all of the series details and stay tuned each month to the pages of MrA to find race coverage and information on this great series that is about to be launched in 2006. round # 1 kicks off in late March at the Atco Super Mx Park in Atco, nJ. if you want to race against the best that District 6 has to offer, make your plans to be there, we certainly will.

LET IT BREATHE

the race season is here again. For most of us, this means new bikes for the upcoming year. Many of you have spent the winter prepping your suspension and you’re motor. one of the first purchases for many of us is a new exhaust. Whether you’ve just added the new pipe or did a full blown motor mod, don’t forget about getting more air to your fire-breather. Most four stroke bikes have a backfire screen installed somewhere between the carb and air filter. Some are installed in the actual airbox (rMZ/KXF), while some have a filter cage with a screen. it’s not a secret to some of the top engine builders that removing the screen greatly increases air flow. As you may know, Mike Alessi was dq’d at Lorettas for having the screen removed in the stock class. i often say that your motor not getting enough air is like running a hundred yard dash with your hand in your mouth. removing the screen is rather easy. You may opt to just cut your existing screen, but this leaves many sharp wires just waiting to bite you every time you change your filter. Pro circuit makes a billet ring that installs easily in your rMZ or KXF airbox. For many others, you can just buy an o.e.M. two stroke cage from your brands counterpart. twin air also makes a power flow kit that includes a billet cage and backfire-resistant filter with a layer of flame retardant foam laminated to the inside. i’d recommend this filter no matter which system you choose. the purpose of having the screen in the first place is to prevent your air filter from catching fire if your engine backfires. Although rare, it does happen. Whether you’ve only installed a pipe, did some airbox mods, or also did some motor work, don’t forget about jetting. You can refer to our nov 05 column for jetting tips (i’m sure that you are all SAVing them, right???)

This month’s quick tip: need a place to hold your rear axle when making a quick tire change? try sticking it in your silencer. Sure beats laying it on the ground and picking up all that dirt.

this years eceA Hare Scrambles banquet was held at the radison Valley Forge Hotel on Saturday night January 21st. MrA was not able to attend but from all reports this years banquet was a huge success. i would like to thank eceA Photographer Patty Shaw for providing the great photos to us. Watch for Patty at eceA events this year grabbing all of your racing action shots. You can contact her at Sportography Productions (201) 841-0261. A big thanks goes out to brian and noel Hartem for all of their hard work and dedication to the HS Series.

Below find excerpts from a post found at www.ecea.org:

Brian and Noel, I think I can speak on behalf of ALL the PeeWee and Youth Parents... You Guys Rock!!!!!!!! The series keeps growing every year for a few key reasons...

#1 The effort you both put in to the series.... In a word... “tireless”... so much work is involved to do what you guys do...

#2 The comraderie amongst all

the people/parents... I have been involved in many different sports in my life, including youth sports (with my kids), and the families that we have in this series truly have a respect for one another like none I have seen

this and that with travis pastranaBy: H

We were on hand for the Grand Opening of Jeff Cernic’s new “Cernic’s Suzuki/Kawasaki” in Somerset PA on Dec. 17, and Jeff’s old buddy Travis Pastrana was there to promote the shop and his new DVD release Nitro Circus 3. Travis was kind enough to take a few minutes out to do a short interview and give us some insight into what it’s like to be TP. If you didn’t already know it, this guy is all about his two favorite F words- fun and fans. He signed autographs all through the day, even while his lunch was growing cold, and his smile never receded.

In your latest interview on the Racer X website you mentioned you were planning a comeback at the Daytona Supercross. Is that still the plan?

TP: Ya, that’s still the plan. I broke my tibia just three weeks ago, so we’ll have to see how that’s doing, but Daytona is what I’m hoping for.

Have you decided whether you’ll ride a two stroke or a four?

TP: I hate four strokes. Well, I shouldn’t say that. I don’t hate them.

But two strokes are what I’m most comfortable with and what I like the best. Does that mean you’ll be on a 250 two stroke?

TP: I guess I’ll ride whatever they give me to ride. But I like the two strokes.

I hate to break it to you, but since you’re not entering the series until Daytona, you’re not likely to be in the hunt for a series title. Any prediction for who will take the title?

TP: Stewart is really fast so far this year, but I can’t guess who will take the title. I mean, that’s why they race! But it will probably be between RC, Stewart and Reed. I suppose there may be some others win some individual rounds, then again, maybe not.. . .

How many bikes do you think you’ve gone through in your career?

TP: Well, that’s pretty hard to answer. Factory bikes are changed out piece by piece and it’s really a new bike a couple of times through the season ... . Okay, factory bikes aside, how many bikes?

TP: Hmm, I’ve got a handful of DRZ 110’s at my place now that I bought myself, we go through those pretty fast. I have no idea how many total.

Do you still have your first bike?

TP: (Laughs) No. No idea where it ended up.

Other than trophies and medals, do you collect anything moto, and what’s your favorite thing in your collection?

TP: I collect riders’ jerseys. My favorite is a Roger DeCoster jersey.

With all the places you’ve been to ride and compete, and all the different things you’ve done, is there still some bike event out there that’s on your wish list?

TP: No, no one single event. It’s all about having fun. I love to perform for big crowds of people, I love the competition. I’d love to try some GNCC, maybe a Six-Days. I’d also really like to try a mile or half-mile flat track. I’m not saying I’d be competitive at it, but I’d love to try it.

So what’s on your “Things to do before I die” list?

TP: A World Rally Championship. That’s really where my focus for the future is.

Between coming up short at Havasu, under-rotating a 360, or rolling a rally car 8 ½ times, not to mention all the other times you’ve crashed, has there ever been a time when you’ve said to yourself, “This is it- I’m gonna die?”

TP: Never. You can never say that. I always think I’m going save it somehow, right up until the end.

Most of us who ride have experienced how time slows down when you’re about to crash. Does that ever go away for someone like you?

TP: No, that’s what keeps you alive. That’s the time when I can say to myself, okay, how can I make this hurt the least?

Back to FMX. In your opinion, what is the single hardest trick to pull?

TP: The backflip superman seat grab. A backflip is dangerous, but it’s not so hard once you get used to it. You stay on center and everything goes real smooth, it’s like you’re not even flipping. But with the superman seat grab, there’s so much going on at once. Your body is extended, you’re off your

center- it’s just way out there.

What do you think is the next big threshold trick?

TP: Probably some variation of the body varial.

Do you think we’ll ever see a front flip?

TP: My boy Tommy is working on that... . (See Street Bike Tommy on Nitro Circus 3. He’s still got some work to do.)

Finally, I want to play a little game of this or that with you. I’ll give you two words, you pick one.

TP: Okay.

Regular or Decaf?

TP: Neither.Poker or Pool?

TP: Poker!Bubba or James?

TP: James Spicy or Mild?

TP: Mild.Snowboard or Skis?

TP: Neither!Robbie or Evel?

TP: Evel. Is there really a choice there?White or Wheat?

TP: Wheat.Speed or ESPN2?

TP: Speed.Talent or Practice?

TP: Hmm. They’re the same.Paper or Plastic?

TP: Paper.Fast or Furious?

TP: Both!Country or Western?

TP: Is there a difference?Brittany or Shakira?

TP: Brittany.Advil or Tylenol?

TP: Both!SX/Lites or 450/250?

TP: SX/Lites.I don’t really like the new names,

but what does 250 mean to anyone anymore? It’s confusing.

Okay, Travis, thanks for taking the time out to chat.

TP: No problem. It was fun.

We might believe that camshafts have only been around as long as the internal combustion engine but they were around long before that, hundreds of years before. if i remember correctly there is an ancient Sanskrit word which translates as “camshaft”, it probably bore little resemblance to what we recognize as a camshaft, but any device that converts rotational motion into linear motion is basically a cam or camshaft.

During the industrial revolution when industrial machinery was being employed in a variety of business enterprises the cam and camshaft began its evolution. i do hope everyone knows where their cam is located. if you are still riding a two stroke you need to look in your gearbox as the only cam you have is your shift drum which by definition does the same job by converting a rotational motion, the drum turning, into a linear motion, the shift forks moving in a straight line. the cam we need to talk about here though is the one that makes our four-stroke engines perform at levels never before achieved.

Whether you ride a crF, YZF or KtM - F the camshaft is located on the top of the engine above the cylinder head hence the term over Head cam (oHc). if you have a 1957 norton Model 19 then your camshaft is located just above the crank and has to drive the valve gear by long push rods. it works, but if we’re looking for high performance then we need to remove as much mass as possible and that means eliminating push rods, followers, rocker arms etc. leaving only the camshaft sitting right on top of the valves.

if you remove the rocker cover you can easily spot the cam chain and cam sprocket which are usually affixed to one end of the camshaft. Your engine may have one camshaft, Single over Head cam (SoHc) or it may have two cams, one for the intake valves and one for the exhaust valves, Double over Head cams (DoHc). the perceived advantage of DoHc is that you could tune the intake and exhaust valve timing independently by advancing or retarding the sprocket position relative to the camshaft but that isn’t easily done as most cam sprockets are pressed on and not easily moved.

early camshafts like those used in textile mills in Victorian era england were crude in their design and as a result very noisy. it is the shape of the cam lobe that contributes to engine performance. early shapes were very basic having straight flanks which accelerated the linear unit very quickly, not too big a deal on a textile loom but in an engine, ouch.

the cam lobe shapes are designed on computers which plot controlled acceleration and deceleration curves. the distance the valve opens and how long it remains open are all important aspects to how much performance an engine can attain, but how quickly we accelerate the valve to full open and consequently return it to it’s valve seat are equally important if we want the thing to hold together.

the cams shape is designed to slowly lift the valve off its seat then accelerate it faster and faster until we begin to approach full open at which point it is decelerated. if we didn’t have this plotted deceleration but rather continued to accelerate the valve to full open its inertia could cause it to lose contact with the cam with disastrous results.

the computer has simplified many engineering feats not the least of which is the design of a camshaft. back in the 50’s race engine designers used to have to make as many as 200 calculations using 7 digit logarithms that took as long as 2 hours per calculation. remember this was before pocket calculators (does anyone remember slide rules). even the most methodical engineer could miss something and the result would be an engine failure of often dramatic proportions.

thankfully the bike manufacturers have the cam profile design thing down to a science now which is good for us as we can now have our cake (power) and eat it too (reliability).

A new race season is almost here and if we at reactive can be of service getting your bike ready for the new season please give us a call, otherwise we look forward to seeing you at the races.

Friday and Saturday’s racing at the booKoo Arena cross in reading, PA brought a pleasurable surprise with the large number of local District 6 riders who came to compete with the pros. congratulations to Jeremy cook and ronnie Stewart for making their mains both nights and to Jeremy for making the Dash for cash on Friday. Also included on the two day card was the 65 – 7 to 11 class.

As Sunday rolled around for the amateur program a few of the local experts stayed on for this event. they included Willie toth, chad Aughinbaugh, chris Monasmith, Adam blessing and tony roth. the rider count for Sunday was 338 riders and 20 classes.

Lowell Spangler, sporting his new team green colors, proved to be the dominant force in each class that he competed with two wins and a second. garret toth and broc Schmelyun also came out of the box looking good for the 2006 season as broc finished the day with a 2nd and 3rd place finish and garret with two 4ths.

congratulations to all who competed in reading. A special thanks to the members of Pagoda for flagging throughout the weekend and to Lenny for announcing Sunday’s events. My next stop will be at Motorama and i look forward to seeing everyone at this event.

i was fortunate enough to be able to attend the Arena cross in reading, PA. While there i rekindled an old friendship and felt it would be the opportune time to introduce him to my fellow MrA readers.

Josh Demuth started his successful career in 1982 and after leaving ohio spent several years living in Spring grove, PA and racing on the District 6 circuit. During those years Josh competed in many events including Loretta Lynn’s and as so many have, struggled to achieve that factory ride they all dream about. After returning to ohio, Josh continued to push forward working through injury to finally achieve that goal. He currently resides in texas and to date has earned two arena cross championships and is the current point leader as he strives for number three. this weekend in reading he earned two victories in the 450’s and a 2nd and 3rd in the 250’s. With all his success his one wish at the end of the

evening was that his two children could be there with him. However, there is one consolation, throughout his entire career his father, randy, continues to be his mechanic. i would like to thank both for sitting down to chat on Friday and wish them continued success.

i would also like to thank ryan Marshall and the booKoo energy Drink Arena cross for a great weekend and a wonderful show.

team green rider Lowell Spangler leads the 85(12-15)group thru the first turn.

Jed Schapport soars to the win in the 250 / open division. AX champion Josh Demuth spent his “mini years” racing in District 6.

As the norm for the past couple of decades, the baltimore county trail riders and the cockeysville optimist club set up shop at the cow Palace at the timonium Fairgrounds to run their indoor Short track race Series in early December. if you’ve never been to one of these events and you are a race fan, no matter what the discipline, you owe to yourself to check this out. its not too many places you can go and see 10 pro racers line up on 450cc 4 stroke motorcycles and turn 7 second lap times on the concrete going handlebar to handlebar between four

foot high plywood walls. get the picture?Anyhow, this year’s three race series was

well attended as always with over 150 racers ranging in age from 4 years to who knows what coming out for each event. Some of the hottest racing at timonium is always found in the Adult 50cc and Adult 100cc classes. racers like 7 time national champion chris carr, newcomer Pros like Jared Mees and raun Wood and local favorites like cory texter and nick Henderson all participate in the mini racing, and what a show they provide.

in this year’s series, several racers stood out over the 3 nights of racing. in 50cc action Luke goonan and colton Smith dominated their divisions winning all of their main events. in both 85cc racing action and the Womens division, the checkers consistently went to Lancaster Harley Davidson’s Shayna texter. And in the Pro division Donny Mullen strutted his stuff by winning all three rounds. Heck, Santa claus even made an appearance at round # 2 by delivering a new custom Harley Davidson to race official bob Valentin.

See, i told you it was all good. never

fear though, if you missed this years exciting racing action at the winter indoor series, you’re still in luck. not only will the baltimore county trail riders be back next December, they also host a summer outdoor series on the 1/10 mile pony ring at the fairgrounds. this series usually runs late July through early August. Stay tuned to the pages of MrA or watch their website at www.bctra.com. You can also view race photos from this event at www.mcracingaction.com.

Author Unknown, but greatly appreciatedReprinted from Mini Rider Magazine

it was the most beautiful thing i had ever seen in all my eight years. it had a pretty red gas tank, silver rims, a plush black seat, a swept-down exhaust pipe and chrome handlebars with soft rubber hand grips. As it sat under the christmas tree that year, the red, blue and green lights reflected off the shiny chrome parts like a thousand sparks dancing from the logs in the fireplace. i can still remember how proud i was to have my own minibike. it was the best christmas present any boy ever received.

Dad, do you remember how we talked Mom into letting me try it out that day, even though the snow was at least a foot deep?

And how i spent the whole afternoon going around in circles in our garage? boy! Mom was sure upset and worried. i’ll bet you really got a good lecture for buying it for me.

i didn’t think spring was ever going to come that year, and when it finally arrived i can remember Mom fussing because i wore all the grass off a trail around the yard. i was the envy of every boy in the neighborhood.

Hey Dad, i can still see Mom now, the day i crashed and hurt my ankle and had to go to the doctor. i thought that was the end of my motorcycling right then and there, but you always came through. it took a lot of fancy talking, but you finally convinced her that with the correct boots, leathers, a helmet and gloves i would be practically indestructible. boy, motorcycling was fun in those days!

it was the summer when i was nine that you entered me in my first race. it was at a short track outside of town at the motorcycle club grounds. it was on a Saturday night and i can still remember how nervous i was then. i remember i got a good start and was leading the pack for a couple of laps before i crashed into the wall. i thought you were going to get run over trying to get to me. oh well, so much for the finals that night. You were still proud and grinning ear to ear when i came back and got a fifth in the consolation race. i remember you bought me a hamburger and milk shake on the way home, and we stayed up half the night making future plans, re-riding the race and admiring our trophy. by the way you talked, anyone would have thought i had just

won the national championship. i was the happiest boy in the world that night.it was several fourths and fifths and

numerous crashes before you decided that i needed a new and larger bike. i was really proud of it, but i couldn’t seem to do any better than i did on the old one. it seemed to get a little harder each time i raced.

then you thought that we needed a faster machine and had a lot of engine work and porting done to it. it seemed like cheating to have it bored out over the size limit of the class i was riding in. You said that it wasn’t cheating because everyone else was doing it. i didn’t really understand at the time. nothing really helped much; even the special lightweight frame and those new type tires didn’t make much difference in the positions in which i was finishing.

i was trying as hard as i could and i knew you were spending a lot of money. i started feeling like i was letting you down. i didn’t think thirds and fourths were all that bad.

Day, when you started jumping on the referee and other officials when i lost, i could really see how much it meant to you and i was determined to try even harder. A 10-year-old boy has a hard time understanding how important it is to win, and i was trying as hard as i could, Dad, honest.

i remember when i was 11, they started giving points to all the riders, and at the end of the season they gave awards for the way you placed in the district. i tried really hard that year and won fourth place. Dad, you looked so disappointed in me for not winning an award, i could hardly hold back the tears.

if you had just known how hard it is to remember all the things you told me to do, while i was racing and in a power slide and fighting traffic all around. it’s very hard to think, Dad, when you are scared stiff. oh, i wasn’t scared of the racing. i was scared i would make a dumb mistake and you would start yelling and embarrassing me, in front of the other riders. i was so afraid of upsetting you my stomach was tied in knots. i felt like asking you to show me how to race instead of yelling instructions at me all the time, but you could never do any better than i could and i didn’t want to hurt you.

boy, i wish we could go back and have fun like we used to. i guess there can be no more races like our first ones. Somehow, all the fun’s gone out of it.

i know, Dad, when you were little you never had the chance to have a bike and race, and i know how hard you had to work as a child, but this isn’t fun anymore, either. i know you don’t realize what you are doing, and i’m sure if you did you wouldn’t push me so hard. i hate to see Mom cry when you fuss at me on the way home from the races. Sometimes i think it hurts her more than it hurts me.

now you have me riding two different classes, and things have gotten so bad i wish i had never seen a motorcycle. i have tried to tell you what you are doing to me but you just don’t listen. i’m 13 now and feel like i am 30. i am so nervous when you are around, i feel like running away. i find myself wishing i could get hurt in a race so maybe you would let me stop. i can see no other way to get out of racing.

i’m sorry, Dad. i have done the best that i could. i have tried hard and yet i still could not please you. Dad, i just cannot be what you wish you could have been.

Chapter 1

it was Friday night, about three minutes to midnight, and Stevie Warner lay wide awake staring out his bedroom window at the bright night sky. Stevie had gone to bed hours ago, along with his big brother Jake who was sound asleep in the bunk above. Stevie just couldn’t manage to drift off to sleep.

“no wonder,” Stevie thought,” Jake has been racing for over a year now; he’s used to it.” All Stevie could think about was getting to the race track and how the big day was almost here.

it had been three months now since his Pappy Miller had brought it home, the bright blue motocross bike he had been wanting for years. Stevie had been riding and practicing on it every spare minute he had. it seemed like forever until he could get home from school to ride. then there was the homework, and then supper—and you can’t forget about the chores. Finally, in any spare daylight, you could find Stevie out on the family’s practice track, with his dad, tom Warner, (learning the basics of motocross racing.)

Stevie’s dad was a semi-pro MX racer, and he owned the local motorcycle shop in town. Stevie had been around motorcycles and racing all his life, on most weekends you could find the Warner family traveling across the state to one race track or another. the whole family enjoyed the time that they could spend together on the weekends doing what they loved to do, racing motorcycles.

Stevie kept telling himself, “go to sleep, go to sleep.” but as hard as he tried, he just kept thinking about when the gate was going to drop or what gear dad said he should be in to start. Stevie thought to himself, “i bet i’ll catch more air on that table top jump than Jake does boy, am i gonna show him.”

“Stevie, wake up!”“Huh……?”Stevie’s mom, Jane Warner, thought to herself, “i

knew something like this was going to happen.” Stevie had been so excited about his first race that she knew he wouldn’t be able to sleep.

“Stevie,,, wake uP!”“What? Huh? is it time mom?”“Yes, get moving, kiddo. everyone else is already

done with breakfast, let’s go.”“Sorry, mom. i couldn’t get to sleep. i tried and i tried.

i even think Jake was snoring and that sure didn’t help things.”

“Honey, your brother doesn’t snore; it was probably just your father out in the garage. He was working on the race bikes until after midnight.”

“Well, maybe it was dad, yippee mom. come on, let’s go”

Jane Warner was the backbone of the whole Warner racing team effort. Yes, her husband tom worked long hours at the shop taking care of his customers, but Jane was the one who kept the race schedules in order, kept all the gear clean, and also made sure there was plenty of food in the motor home to feed the whole Warner crew for the weekend.

Jane was used to going to the races that is where she

first met her husband tom. Jane’s dad was a racer too, so she had spent a lot of time at the race tracks when she was a girl.

“Let’s go, gang!” Jane yelled through the house, “We have a four hour ride ahead of us.”the Warners piled into the motor home one at a time. Pap Miller was already in the

driver’s seat, Jake and Stevie’s dad tom were just finishing up loading the gear, and Stevie’s mom was coming out of the house with her arms full of last minute items they needed for their trip.

“Dad, did you strap my bike down really good?” Stevie asked.“Yes, son your bike will be fine”“Well i hope so. i don’t want anything happening to it before i get a chance to race it.”“relax, little brother,” Jake shouted from the back of the motor home, “You’ll get the first

chance to crash it up tomorrow morning when you hit the track.”Stevie thought to himself, “great, i probably won’t be able to sleep tonight, either. Just one

more day until i get to show them who the best racer in the family really is.”usually, the Warners didn’t leave until the morning of the race. but this weekend, they

were racing at the Shady run MX Park over on the east side of the state. it was a long drive, and practice started early Sunday morning, so they decided to leave a day ahead of time. besides, Stevie couldn’t wait to get there and get ready for the biggest day of his life.

the Warners arrived at the track late on Saturday afternoon. Stevie was the first one out of the motor home and he was rip roaring to do everything at once.

“come on dad, let’s unload the bikes, no, let’s go get signed up, Dad, did you remember the race gas?”

“Hey, settle down there partner. Sign up didn’t even open yet,” chuckled Stevie’s dad.the Warners all had jobs to do. they had all been to the races hundreds of times before,

but today was a little different than other race days. it was about to be Stevie’s first race and they all gave Stevie a little extra attention, even Stevie’s big brother Jake.

that night around the camp fire, the Warners talked about Stevie’s first race, about how exciting it was going to be, and how well he was going to do. Pap Miller told race stories about the old days when he use to race and about the time when Stevie’s mom, Jane, entered a race. Pap Miller had told that same story many times before, but the whole family listened like it was the first time they had ever heard it.

“oK gang, it’s time for bed. everybody, and i mean eVerYboDY, has a big day tomorrow,” Jane Warner commanded.

Stevie was anxious to go to bed. He knew the sooner he could get to sleep the sooner the morning would get here. As Stevie’s mom tucked him into bed, they talked about how much fun the next day was going to be, and both Stevie and his mom fell asleep lying there talking about Stevie’s first race.

110's.Sponsors: i would like to thank my family

especially my dad for all the things they have done for me, Dave gowland at Kawasaki for giving me the time and effort on putting me on his team, Jeff at Pr2 for building me the fastest bike that i have ever ridden. team green Kawasaki, Pr2, Shift, Smith, FMF, Serious racewear, eVS, twin Air, renthal, Maxima, Dunlop, Motographx, cernic's, Works connection, rausch creek, Acerbis, Powerseal uSA, rK chains, V-force, Monster energy, Freestyle Watches, Sponsorhouse, Motoxstation, Motoplayground, Marylandmotocross, and Motorcycle racing Action.

MrA: Do you remember your first race? LS: YesMrA: What can you tell us about it?LS: My dad got me a bike for my birthday

and i rode it in a corn field for about 3 hours. He never taught me how to turn he just taught me how to twist the throttle. So the next day he took me out to Sleepy Hollow and i ran my first race in the 50 4-6 class. All i remember was my dad following me around the track because i fell in every turn. From that day on that's all i wanted to do.

MrA: What or who inspires you to race at the level you do?

LS: Winning and competing inspires me the most At the level i am racing at, when you win it is the best feeling ever to know that you are competing with the best riders in the nation. My dad also inspires me because he sacrifices so much for me to pursue my dreams. He is a very positive influence in my life and believes that i can do anything i set my mind to.

MrA: What are your future goals for racing or other?LS: to win as many amateur national championships as i can until i am 19. then to go pro and get on a factory team or a privateer team and to finish in the top 5 as a pro.MrA: What series or races do you plan to attend this year?LS: All of the

Amateur nationals except Mammoth, Kawasaki race of champions, and all of the District 6 contingency races.

MrA: can you give us an idea of how much you ride and train?

LS: i go to the gym for an hour and 30 minutes, ride mountain bike between 45 minutes to an hour, then i ride 4-5 days a week for 5 hours.

MrA: What can you tell us about your team green ride?

LS: Well after Loretta's this year my dad and i discussed factory teams and we decided that Kawasaki had the team attitude that matched

my personality. So i called Dave gowland from Kawasaki on the phone and had some lengthy conversation regarding my results and goals. At first Dave said he could help us with a dealer assist ride. but after seeing me ride well at the race of champions and branson national he offered us an A Level team green ride. So they are helping us out with bikes, parts, and technical support. For '06 team green has reduced their team from 80 riders down to 28, choosing riders that they feel can help them win more amateur national championships.

MrA: can you break down your past finishes?

LS: i've won numerous District 6 class championships and lsited below are my 2005 finishes.

Study your owner’s manual and always inspect your Suzuki before riding. Always supervise young riders. The RM series motorcycles are for closed-course competition use and related practices only.
