H a p p y A u g u s t everybody, and there really is no doubt that it’s that time of the year. the heat has been

fantastic lately. of course i am not going to complain, i like it hot.

About the only other thing that you can guarantee in August is that it’s Amateur national time.

Yes, the Flat track racers have all returned home from their national events in illinois and boy did we score big again. check out their spread on page 31 of this issue. D6 racers brought home a total of 11 national championships and 3 grand national titles, congratulations to all.

now it’s the motocross racers turn. the Loretta Lynn Amateur national championships will just about be in the books until many of you get to read this issue. check out the list of local qualifiers here in the center spread of this issue and be sure to tune back in next month to see how everyone faired.

Again, MrA wishes all the best of luck on their journey to capture a national title. remember, you are already a champion just by making the cut.

the motocross racing has been top notch locally with some great competition and huge racer turnouts. there were a few races in July that really were about as close to Loretta’s as you could get without actually making the trip. check out all the action right here in MrA.

Also in this issue be sure to check out the tech and Safety tips and take a walk into the past with Al carr’s column titled “the good old Days”. there are race schedules and advertiser information and you can even learn about the newest race team to hit the local scene. everything you need to have a successful racing season can be found right here in the pages of MrA.

Please don’t forget about are downed riders too. i know as time goes on it can become easy to forget about those that still may be struggling. even a phone call or a card can make the biggest difference in the world. MrA readers commend yourselves, you have been fantastic in these efforts this year. Let’s keep it going.

And as always we thank you all for reading and supporting our efforts. Please don’t be afraid to contact us, we are always looking for new ways to offer you the best race coverage that’s available in our area. check our website regular for all your event pics and we’ll see you all at the races.

Until next time.Jim Bull, MRA

Fav. Racer: Jeremy Mcgrath

Goals: to Qualify for Loretta’s in 2007, turn Pro buy age 17

Sponsors: Martinsburg Motorsports, Link For earth, Mom and Dad, grandparents.

MrA would like to introduce britton Stewart as this months hotshot. britton competes in the MDrA Series where he has had great success. brittons roots take him back to ohio where he first began his racing career. there he raced the crA Series and he related a story of his very first race on his Suzuki Jr50. britton was five and he and his family were new to the sport. His family signed him up and britton went out and won

his first moto that he ever raced. the Stewarts were elated at his success, they packed up and went home with the satisfaction that britton had won his first race. only one problem, no one had told them there was a second moto. Anyhow, you learn fast in this sport.

A few years later the Stewarts moved to the area and britton has been racing ever since. He’s competed at many tracks and has run the D7 Series in the past. Last

year britton joined the MDrA where he won both the Supermini and 85 (12-15) b divisions.

in 2006 britton moved to the A division where he is definitely facing some stiff competition. He currently sets in 6th place in those standings and he is fourth in the Supermini division. His results have been great lately and i’m sure at the end of the season he’ll be right there in the mix for the series championship.

by talking to britton you can tell that he loves to race, he is an honor roll student and he loves hanging out at the track. i’d like to thank him and his family for giving us the time for the interview and we wish you the best with your racing endeavors. Keep an eye on this young man from West Virginia, i believe he has a bright future in our sport. And be sure to watch out next month, who knows where we’ll find our next Hotshot, it could be you.

The ImporTance offun In racIng

by chad bellott

i was at a track a few weeks ago and witnessed one of the most horrifying things i’ve ever seen. A dad was screaming at his kid while they were in staging about holding it wide open, and not letting off. i glanced at the kid, who was probably only 8 or 9 years old and he just sat there with tears running down his face, nodding in agreement. i couldn’t help but feel sorry for the kid. Just when my race was ready to go to the line, i watched as the boy came off the track, i think he finished next to last. it was obvious that the boy didn’t have the capacity to “hold it wide open”, he was only starting out and i could only guess that he just wasn’t comfortable going that fast around the track. i’m sure his Dad was probably mad.

When i was a kid growing up and racing, my parents preached one thing to me, and that was “have fun out there”. to this day, my Mom and Dad, as well as my girlfriend tell me to “have a good time”. i can remember one of my first races at Hurricane Hills, it was an absolute mud fest in practice. i fell about half a dozen times, and got stuck in the mud another half a dozen times. When i came back to the truck, i was so mad. i threw my goggles off and pitched my bike up on the stand in a fit. i told my Dad “the track sucks! You can’t do anything out there; i don’t even know why they’re racing?” My Dad just looked at me and said “i don’t know why we’re racing either if you’re not having a good time. We’ll just load up and go home.”

At my age now i know that everyone has to race in the same conditions, be it muddy, dusty, rocky, flat or rutted. i sat there thinking about loading up and going home, and it almost sounded like a good idea. i calmed down a bit and started scraping the mud off of my bike and told my Mom and Dad i didn’t want to leave. i’m glad we didn’t because it turned out to be a good day. For the eleven years that i have been racing, just about every time i loaded up the truck my parents would say to me “You know…we can quit this at anytime, you don’t have to prove anything to us, and we just want you to have a good time doing this.”

i know what a lot of people are thinking. Winning is what’s most fun, doing well is most fun. Well that’s true; there is nothing better than winning your race. if having fun depended on whether you win or not, then there are a lot of people having a crappy time. but when you start out, it just doesn’t happen. You can’t just go out on your first race and set the world on fire. it’s the small victories that matter when you start out. Finishing the day without hitting the ground, or not getting arm pump, maybe getting a holeshot or two. the bottom line is we can tell when we ride good and when we don’t ride up to our potential. Soon as we come off of the track we know whether it was a good race or not. Sometimes we don’t ride up to our potential and ride with our heads up our butts, but whose fault’s that? Sometimes i come back and i do not have a smile on my face, i’m having fun racing, but it’s my results i’m unhappy with. i always try to keep in mind that i’m racing to have a good time.

it’s true that nothing compares to the feeling of racing. it’s the camaraderie we have as a group, helping each other out, looking forward to the next battle at the next race, or walking the track before practice and saying “Look at this turn, hittin it pinned!” that makes up the fun factor. i don’t know about everyone else, but racing is what sets me apart from all of my other friends, as none of them know anything about bikes. being committed to racing is fun in itself. i urge everyone, racers, fathers and families to try and have the best time possible racing. if your kid comes back with a not-so-great finish, believe me, they don’t need you to tell them that. they know they didn’t ride good. Sometimes we just can’t help it, that’s how the cards are dealt on the track. be it a great race or a lackluster finish, the rider knows weather it was a good ride or not. So calm down out there and try to instill the fun of racing in your rider, after all that’s why we’re there.

WMXtreme.com race team was born out of the love for the sport of motocross. We are trying to bring the team concept to the amateur level by promoting active competition at any level using quality products and teaching good sportsmanship. this we feel will help keep the sport of motocross alive and active forever. our team consists of A through c riders, ages pee wee to seniors. We feel the team atmosphere promotes growth in the youth riders while expending longevity to the older riders. Working as a team, we feel we will accomplish the whole picture, where as individually there are potential issues with finances, knowledge and the all around support that each rider needs. our team is a working team with members contributing by helping and strengthening their team members with support at the track, providing rider schooling from the more experienced riders on the team, and support from our families. We include and promote the family atmosphere on our team. As we move forward we hope that our sponsors will jump on board with this new and exciting way to engage and promote the sport of motocross at the amateur level, where all good pros started.

John Wernsdorfer is a partner, the team manager and acting coordinator for the new WMXtreme.com race team. His 25 years in the industry gives him the ability to make decisions for all levels of riders and keep the team running smoothly. John is an accomplished, expert MX racer and occasionally participates in the Senior A class.

David Mosier is the other partner in WMXtreme.com. David is a successful

local business executive at MD based Kelly & Associates insurance and Financial Services companies. He grew up racing in MAMA and AMA District 7 at the expert class level. After more than 16 years away from active participation in the sport, he has returned with his 1st of 4 children and they both compete in the local MDrA series.

David met John in 2004, after having a problem with a new custom MX bike he purchased. they both hit it off right away and have been working together ever since. David says this of his relationship with John, “John has amazing talent in customizing motorcycles to not only look fantastic, but operate at a level only the factory teams could surpass. You have to stop by our pits at a MDrA race to truly appreciate his work on all the bikes.” We have many affiliates at this time; eVS Sports, Spectro oil, tcr Wheel Lacing, icat, Project 321, Pro circuit, Montgomeryville cycle center, Fasst company, Powersports graphics etc.

our current team members are: David Mosier #58, Jeremy Mosier #143, Jay Wernsdorfer #757, Kevin Stoner #38, Zach Stoner #97, Paul Mills #967, Doug Mills #96, and Dale Weller #108.

King of the Mountain Motocross sponsored by Arkport cycles. June 17-18, 2006 the District 6 ultimate Motocross Series sponsored by MSr, Answer and Pro taper made its way north to Miles Mountain MX. When you’re at Miles you really do feel like a King, it seems like you’re setting on top of the world and the hospitality is some of the finest around.

riders from both D6 and D4 converged on the mountain this weekend to take part in their respective series. Saturday brought us an open practice day and night Supercross racing under the lights that is always fun to watch and participate in.

Sunday dawned a beautiful summer day with a full contingent of motocross racing on Miles’ main race track. there was a pit bike race at intermission and double district 6 points to be earned on the day.

round # 11 of the ultimate Series heads back to Miles Mountain on August 27th and that race will offer factory contingency money from Suzuki, Kawasaki and Husqvarna. the trip is always worth the while so head on out to Miles and grab a little bit of that mountain air and race one of the best kept secrets around.

Keep up to date on the web at www.milesmountainmx.com and view event photos from today at

Reynolds Relentless 2006 Ultimate District Six Motocross Championship SeriesRound 6: Hurricane Hills Sports CenterBy Jim P. Sanderson

Clifford, PA, June 12, 2005the new motocross series of the northeast,

sponsored by MSr, Pro taper, rrP and Answer racing, the ultimate Motocross series, was combined with the District Six championship series for the 2006 season. the ultimate series continues to grow and offers some of the best competition and contingencies of any series on the east cost.

Honda thumper pilot, rJ reynolds had a great day at the sixth round of the ultimate District Six championship series. reynolds topped the podiums of both the 125 and 250 b classes and took second overall in the extremely competitive collegeboy class. reynolds was the king of holeshots too, he holeshot every moto in both b classes.

reynolds, nick Mcphee, eric Wilson, Kyle Willis and Sonny Drake led the start of the opening 125 b moto. reynolds had a two second lead over the Suzuki of Mcphee on lap two. Willis, Drake and Wilson rounded out the top five. reynolds gap over Mcphee increased to three seconds on lap three. Willis and Drake battled for two laps before Drake was able to relegate Willis to fourth on lap four. in the first corner of the white flag lap, Mcphee lost his front end and went down. Drake, Willis, Wilson and chris cheney all advanced. reynolds got the win with a three second lead. Drake, Willis, cheney and Wilson rounded out the top five.

reynolds, Mcphee, ryan gainey, and Wilson led the start of the final 125 b moto. reynolds, out front again, had a four second advantage over Mcphee on lap two. cheney, gainey and Drake rounded out the top five. on the following lap reynolds increased his lead to five seconds. reynolds got another win and made it look easy. Mcphee, cheney, gainey and Drake rounded out the top five.

reynolds topped the box with a perfect 1-1. cheney’s 4-3 score was good enough for second and Drake closed out the podium with a 2-5 tally.

reynolds, gainey, Mcphee, Wilson and Andy Mikolaichik led the start of the opening 250 b moto. reynolds quickly pulled away and started lap two with a three second gap on gainey. by the fourth lap the leaders were spreading out but Mikolaichik still managed to pass Wilson by doing the finish line triple at the start of lap four. Wilson was relegated to fifth. Shortly thereafter, cheney got by Wilson taking fifth. reynolds got another win with gainey, Mcphee, Mikolaichik and cheney trailing.

reynolds led the start of the final 250 b moto with Mcphee in close pursuit when Mcphee had a horrendous get-off over the infield step-down tabletop, which had yellow flags flying for the rest of the race as Mcphee received medical attention. the top five were now reynolds, cheney, gainey, Milolaichik and Wilson. cheney made the pass on reynolds for the lead on the fourth lap. reynlds was relegated to runner-up status. cheney took the checkers with a three second lead. reynolds, gainey, Mikolaichik and Wilson rounded out the top five. reynolds topped the box with a 1-2. gainey took runner-up with a 2-3 and cheney closed out the podium with a 5-1.

T’s Tech Tips

Here’s a little trick for all the four-stroke guys. Many bikes (or quads) have a hesitation problem. one cure is to safety wire the accelerator linkage to the arm from the throttle shaft adjusting screw (see picture).

this forces the linkage to activate the diaphragm immediately upon twisting the throttle. the purpose of the diaphragm is to squirt some fuel into the throat of the carb every time you twist the throttle. (this is also why you should not twist the throttle of a four stroke while the bike is not running. the diaphragm squirts

fuel whether the bike is running or not). if you look at the linkage before doing the mod, you’ll see the plastic linkage move away from the adjustment screw when you twist the throttle. this is the cause of the hesitation.

before you start, it’s very important to check the linkage when the throttle is held wide open. (of course, the bike is not running while holding the throttle open). With the throttle in the fully open position, the plastic stop of the linkage should still be touching the set screw. if not, you’ll have to trim the stop post on the diaphragm itself. otherwise, when you wire the parts together it may stop your throttle from opening fully.

When the parts are wired together, the diaphragm is activated immediately when the throttle is opened. this should cure your hesitation problem.

Why isn’t this done at the factory? it’s a safety issue. A neglected bike can have the diaphragm activating rod bind or stick thus causing the throttle to also stick. With this in mind, keep that carb clean!

if you still have a hesitation when landing off large jumps at high speed, try resetting your float height. A very good rider needs every bit of fuel possible in the bowl. You have a combination of the “sloshing” effect along with a marginal amount of fuel in the bowl. try setting your float height to the point where you have fuel coming out of the overflow when you tip the bike 45 degrees.

there’s also an issue with 2006 crF250 having a bogging problem. the problem is because the carb is larger than last year and the bike loses some of its bottom end. tbt / Keeney has a nifty little kit that includes a sleeve to make the throat of the carb smaller. Motocross Action did a test in their May issue and gave it a whopping 5 star rating.

A kid’s viewHi guys! this is chase rusden. i just went

to my first AMA Pro-national at unadilla. it was unbelievable! ricky carmichael won both moto’s. Mike Alessi won moto one and ryan Villopoto won moto two in the lites class. the lites races were really cool because they kept battling back and forth. i did get to meet some of the pro’s. You have to get a ticket and wait in line for and hour just to get ricky and bubba’s autograph. i met John Dowd and ryan Hughes. i asked ryan if he was going to do any gncc’s, and he said “he doesn’t like rocks and trees and is used to open courses”.

i just finished doing a four day tony D. motocross camp at Hurricane Hills. the second day was my favorite. broc Hepler came and taught us. Afterwards, we got to eat lunch, ask questions, and get autographs with him. i learned lots of things at tony Distefano’s motocross school. i learned why broc Hepler was a pro, he made everything look so easy.

where To rIDe - IrIsh valley mXLocated just 10 minutes from

Shamokin, irish Valley is one of Pennsylvania’s newest mx practice tracks. they are only in their second year of operation and have made some major improvements already. A newly installed sprinkler system is almost complete with hopes of providing a dust free riding day. the pro motocross track has been extended since last year by combining the AtV track to make one long track. the result is a very nice mixture of terrain with plenty of elevation changes including three downhill sections, a small whoop section, and numerous jumps to provide a very nice mix of riding.

they currently have 5 tracks which provide a variety of riding from the 50cc beginner to an advanced expert. there’s a

four man starting gate that you can operate for practice starts and a small oval track for corner practice.

the track is situated on a rolling section of farmland with 20+ inches of topsoil, not the familiar coal dirt found in many eastern PA riding areas. the track owners, brian Hill and tim Krebbs, have

been mixing sawdust in with the clay soil to create a loamy type of surface. this also helps keep the moisture in and makes for some really sweet berms.

there is a concession stand with hot food and a playground for the smaller kids. Some of the basics in spare parts are available like inner tubes and spark plugs, etc. A new shower / rest room facility is in the very near future too. camping is permitted in the pits with plans for a wooded camping area adjacent to the track, hopefully completed this fall.

irish Valley is currently open for both bikes and quads on weekends and bikes only on Wednesdays. Season passes are

available. You can find all of the rates, directions, and current info on their website at www.irishvalleymx.com or by calling 570-648-7117 or 570-672-2538

if you haven’t been to irish Valley, you should give it a try. it’s worth your while to make the trip!

rD# 6 • mDra series • June 24-25, 2006 • By mraWhen it rains, it pours. Wow, what an

understatement. round # 6 of the MDrA race Series landed at Sleepy Hollow in late June along with several inches of rain and yes, several hundred riders.

What a display for the love of a sport. Many riders came and so did the rain. Some of the riders left, but the rain didn’t. the Saturday practice was dry and track conditions were good. on Sunday morning the heavy rain started and it never stopped. by the time the first gate of the day dropped we still had over 250 riders stick around to chase the valuable MDrA points.

“When it rains, it pours.”

Several new winners emerged on this slippery day with team WMXtreme coming

away with two wins. team founder David Mosier grabbed his first win in 25 years after a recent comeback to the sport with one of the younger team members, Zach Stoner picking up his first win also. in the School boy Division Josh Fisher and David Wingate continued their friendly rivalry with expert racer Jeremy cook taking home the win in the 125 A division. check the results here to see how your favorite motocross junkie faired. Yes, you need to be hooked to race in conditions like these.

the day was cut to a one moto format, but i believe all who stayed and raced had a great time. the smiles were huge and the mud seemed to be coming off fairly easily. check our website at www.mcracingaction.com to view a few event photos, my camera wimped out on this day long before any riders went home.

Amateur National ChampionshipsLoretta Lynn’s Ranch • August 1-5, 2006Hurricane Mills, TN

Loretta Lynn’s is the largest amateur motocross race in the world. the 25th annual Air nautiques/AMA Amateur national Motocross championships at Loretta Lynn’s ranch will take place August 1-5, 2006. racers compete against over 20,000 hopefuls from across America to earn one of just 1386 qualifying positions.

A win at the Amateur nationals can serve as a springboard to a lucrative professional motocross career. Most of America’s top professional motocrossers, including Jeremy Mcgrath, ricky carmichael, travis Pastrana and James Stewart, have won AMA Amateur national championships at Loretta Lynn’s. A victory at this race is so valuable that last year, teenager ryan Villopoto from Poolsbo, Washington, was rewarded with a six-figure pro contract from the Monster energy/Pro circuit/Kawasaki factory racing team after winning an Amateur national championship.

Listed on these pages find the qualifying riders from our region of the country. Some are pictured most are listed. We apologize if we missed anybody, the list is large and we know most but not all. Just earning a spot on the gate at this prestigious event is a major accomplishment and we wish all the very best in chasing your dream on the way to the top.

As the norm during the first week of July many of our local Flat track racers migrate to illinois to partake in their Amateur national championship Series. this was the 30th year that the AMA has run their championship event and as in the past, many local racers achieved great success while there. individual events are held in short track, tt, half mile and mile events. A rider can win a national championship by winning any one of these disciplines in their particular class. A grand national championship is awarded to the rider in

each class who scores the most points in all of the disciplines combined. regional events are held around the country to qualify for the finals with the main events in illinois typically whittling down to 12 rider main events. it’s quite a process to get there and make a main let alone come away with the title.

our area has always been a hotbed for talent on the Flat track scene and many champions from years past are now competing on the Pro circuit. Here’s a look at how some of our riders did.

For the past 21 years raceway Park has hosted the Suzuki sponsored nJ State championship and this year’s race was run as part of the ultimate MX series. As has been the norm this season rain was again the forecast for Sunday but the riders didn’t stay away. contingency from the major manufacturers and prizes from ultimate series sponsors MSr, Answer, and Pro taper made this a must attend event regardless of the weather forecast.

Fortunately the rain held off and the racing was top notch in all the classes. With a break in the national series rockstar Suzuki rider Jason Lawrence used the off weekend to come back to his home track and compete. riding a rMZ 450 instead of his usual rMZ 250 the 250 expert class was looking like it was to be the race of the day. Along with Lawrence was newly signed MX Payday/PDL Honda rider Phil nicoletti, national Arenacross star Damien Plotts and local favorite barry carsten, all set to do battle on the rough raceway Park track.

As the gate dropped on the first moto nicoletti and Lawrence were side by side with Lawrence grabbing the slight advantage going over the staircase. During the early stages of the moto Lawrence kept his advantage with nicoletti staying close. rrP sponsored greg Pamart was third and MSr/bromley’s/Arai sponsored carsten in

fourth. With rain falling slightly the track was starting to get slippery and Lawrence went down when his front wheel washed out in the middle of the track handing the lead to nicoletti. Lawrence quickly remounted and set after nicoletti again. the lead duo set a pace that would take them to a 40+ second lead over Pamart and carsten. carsten would eventually get by Pamart and try to reel in the lead duo. With 2 laps to go Lawrence made his move and got by nicoletti before the staircase and held on for the moto win. nicoletti was second with carsten, Plotts and Pamart rounding out the top 5. Phil nicoletti grabbed the Sobe holeshot award as the second moto got underway followed closely by Honda rider onorino Fascelli. coming over the “Plunge” nicoletti lead followed by Fascelli, Plotts, Darren edsall and Lawrence. nicoletti overjumped a double double section in the front of the track and went down hard. With his bike in the center of the track Lawrence made his move and got around Plotts and took the lead. nicoletti got back up and rejoined the race back in 10th place. As the norm the first weekend in July, Doublin gap MX Park hosts their Annual Yamaha All Star national event. this year’s festivities started with a practice day on Friday leading into a warm up race on Saturday with the All Star national being run on Sunday.

this years event looked like a preview to the Amateur nationals coming up at Loretta Lynn’s ranch almost a month to the day away. the temps were in the 90’s and the starting gates were full of riders already qualified in for the national.

this particular race weekend was round # 9 of the District 6 ultimate MX Series offering factory contingencies from all of the major manufactures. in addition the race was sponsored by Sheckells and Sons construction as well as industry giants, Yamaha and tucker rocky Distributing with

their MSr, Answer and Pro taper lines.the racing action was intense in most

classes. i hate to even start naming names because the best of the best were here. in expert action, Pr2’s Darryn Durham showed great speed and ability but it would be Honda of Huston’s Sean Hackley who

would emerge the victor on this weekend. throw in names like nicoletti, Wages, Plotts and Pamart and the stage is set.

How about Supermini and 85cc racing action, team green’s Lowell Spangler dominated this weekend but the rest were there, brajkovich, Lettieri, Seibold and Hawk. the 85cc (7-11) class showed some of the best racing of the weekend with Page, Peters, balkovic and Piazza fighting tooth and nail for the checkered flag.

i’m telling you folks, we have some of the best in the business representing us this year at the nationals. check out our preview in the center

spread of this issue. Doublin gap gave us a great weekend of racing. between the competition, the valuable championship points and the contingencies, let alone the vendors and great announcing, it was the place to be. check out Doublins next event, that will be an MDrA race the weekend of August 19th and 20th and be sure to check this weekends event photos at www.mcracingaction.com.

Yamaha Motor corp. sponsors the Yamaha All Star national each year

at Doublin gap MX Park.

AMS Sponsored Yamaha Pilot Kameron Page wins the 85cc (7-11) class on both days in what could be a prelude to Loretta Lynn’s.

Jerry Seip (343) leads Senior A thru the first turn and on to victory.

team green’s Lowell Spangler dominated every moto he entered on the weekend.

tyler newberry and Justin Hass mix it up in 4 Stroke racing action.

all sTar naTIonal warm up

WMA’s Jessye Davisby Jc benson

there was a buzz in the pit area about the visiting riders in the A class at Doublin gap on Fourth of July weekend, but coming in under the radar was Jessye Davis, Women’s Pro rider. Jessye, a Maryland native, is competing in her third year on the Women’s Pro circuit and is currently fifth in points. Jessye recently achieved her first podium appearance after struggling through the first two seasons with crashes and epstein barr. the 2006 season has proven to be a success with consistency

in her riding and the results are showing in her current point status. When she does make a local appearance she is placed in the A class and states that she relishes the challenge as this helps to sharpen her skills for the women’s circuit.

As Jessye begins to achieve success we need to remember she was not the first Davis in motocross competition. Her younger brother eric sparked the flame for her to begin racing. eric is currently a c rider and has already made an appearance at Loretta’s.

Jessye counts her parents as her biggest supporters; however the following have come on board - Fox - Spy - Pr2 - Factory connection - Liquid Performance - tAg - ASV - regina - marylandmotocross.com - Vision - and reliable Painting.

Jessye’s advice for other girls who want to race is never give up and always follow your dream and if you see a blue number plate with #245 at an event be sure not to miss a golden opportunity to meet this rising star.

Dan Holton, Jr. wins the highly competitive 125 b division on Saturday, what a line up.

Mark Davis soars to the wins in both 4 Stroke and college boy at the All Star national warm up race.

Dustin greiner races the 85cc (7-11) class and helps MrA pitch a tent

Saturday night, thanks Dustin.

John Myers dusts off his gear and borrows his son’s bike to race to the win in the Senior b division.

Crashing stinkscrashing, it’s part of our sport; sometimes

it’s just an easy high-side out of a corner or a major high speed cross-rut get off. no matter how it happens there is always the chance for injuries. the weird thing is that i am sitting here right now writing this article recovering from a season ending injury and i did not even hit the ground. i got cross-rutted and landed sideways off a drop-off jump and tore my AcL (anterior cruciate ligament), PcL (posterior cruciate ligament) and meniscus… oh, and don’t let me forget the fracture of my tibial plateau. believe it or not my foot did not even come off the peg. it got twisted on the peg and the weight of the bike bottoming out came back up through my leg and to my knee --- something had to give.

i know if you are still reading this article, you’re thinking ‘get to the point’. My point is that i would like all you guys, girls and parents to look at the safety side of riding. there are a lot of gimmicks out there to spend your money on, so make sure you really take a good look at knee braces for both young and old riders alike.

the knee is a strange joint and has a lot of parts that can go wrong. All of you have caught your foot on a rut while sliding out of a corner and tweaked your knee. if you are lucky that’s all you did. the knee itself is a weak joint, not really set up to work side to side or backwards. believe me, if you have ever hyper extended your knee, like i did in ‘82 at Sleepy Hollow; you know where i am coming from.

For you parents out there please, please, please, look into knee braces for your young guy or girl. i probably wouldn’t have a pair of torn up knees today, if i had had them back when i was young. even though the doctors and procedures for fixing knees are getting better and better, i would rather not have you go through surgery if you can help it.

i know it sounds like i might have stock in a knee brace company, but i don’t. there are more and more companies producing and selling knee braces and that’s good for us, because the prices are coming down. i wear custom fit innovation Sports cti braces. they are really costly at $1200.00 a piece, but i would not be able to ride without them. if you check, your insurance company may pay for them with a prescription from your orthopedic surgeon.

When you go out to buy, remember the old saying, “you get what you pay for.” Parents, remember your young rider will grow out of knee braces as fast as they grow out of boots and riding gear. Don’t start off with a custom pair, look for a pair of adjustable braces for your growing rider. i think one of the best braces on the market is from Asterisk. they have been around for a long time and make a nice quality brace for the price. For riders that have finished growing, the cell is the best bang for your buck. For young riders, it is the new germ model made just for kids.

think about this; would you send your young ones out to ride without a helmet? i didn’t think so; well a knee brace is a helmet for your knee. i know you are wondering with my list of knee injuries, was this guy wearing knee braces? Yes. My orthopedic surgeon said that my tibia would have come up through my knee cap and taken everything with it,

if i had not been wearing braces. So, the braces did do their job and kept everything in line and saved what is left of my knee. Visit the website www.arthroscopy.com/sp05001.htm to see the anatomy and function of the knee. this will help you understand what you are up against if you tear up your knee. Here are a few websites for companies that sell knee braces: www.asterisk.com, www.evs-sports.com, www.jointhealing.com and www.innovationsports.com.

the weekend after July 4th brought round # 10 of the D6 ultimate MX Series and a spectacular Saturday night Fireworks show to the Happy ramblers Motorcycle club in Hanover, PA. Saturday started off with a practice day with close to 300 racers participating on the new for 2006 Happy ramblers course. As the dust settled and the sun went down the boys from Sheckells and Sons construction began to prepare their show.

Shortly after dark the sky was filled with one of the best Fireworks shows i’ve ever attended. the Happy bleachers were full as the night sky was lit for all in attendance.

on Sunday we awoke to beautiful sunny skies and again the extreme heat. this didn’t stop the racers from coming, close to 550 racers filled the pits at Happy to chase those highly valued ultimate points. i believe this one may have been close to a record this year for an ultimate race, and why not? the ultimate Series is new for 06’ with a better schedule and new awards on the horizon for D6 racers. Stay tuned to their ad in MrA in the upcoming months to see what they have to offer as well as up to date info on the MX only banquet for 2006.

in 50cc racing action, we saw wins going to garrett beam in the (4-6) division with Joe balkovic taking the overall (7-8) win in one of the best 50 races i’ve seen in a long time. Watch for Joe as he travels

to Loretta’s this month to chase a national championship.

Joe’s big brother Jarek won the 65 (7-9) and 85cc (7-11) divisions on the day as he is also on his way to Loretta’s and AMS sponsored Drew Kibler continued to dominate the college boy division in the ultimate Series.

expert racing action found new pro for 2006 Willy toth winning the 250 A race with chad Wages edging out Kevin brodsky for the 125 A win. brandon Seibold won the 125 b overall with Kelsey green sweeping the Women’s division.

Happy’s next race is August 26-27 and is round # 10 of the MDrA race Series. be sure to attend as this series is coming down to the wire and the racing action should be red hot. Saturday will offer a practice day with racing on Sunday. See you there!

today is professional and high profile motocross scene, and the fact that we all focus on racing so much, we tend to forget about our close cousin. no, not Hare Scramble. i’m talking about what kid’s dream about, FMX !! We’re talking Deegan, Metzger, Pastrana…. the all X-game atmosphere.

So everybody heard about those famous athletes, but only a few people know about the local freestyle scene.

You have to know, that just like the local D6 pro racers, we have some great up and coming hard working freestyler…

Hi, tell us who you are?i’m brent Schwalm, i’m from Myerstown PA

and i’m 23.

How did you get into FMX?i was racing locally for 6 years, then i saw

the Van’s triple crown in Vegas on tV in 1999 and got hooked from that day on, i focus on FMX. i used to go practice at raush creek on the big table top, and then finally built a ramp in my back yard and started learning better tricks.

What is it in FMX that you like over MX?When i’ve raced, i really like the jumping

part of it… but you have to wait a full lap or so to hit something big, like saying the bonzai at Sleepy, to be able to pull some tricks, so to me it’s just better to hit my ramp consistently and practice.

there are a lot of people jumping out there, how did you make the transition from jumping in your back yard to shows all over the country?

Joe robertson invited me to jump at a show in indiana in 2004, i jumped there in front of a crowd for the first time! it went okay and i signed with the promoter for a few more shows.

i could not imagine how much pressure i would of feel! but you really have to perform,

please the crowd and the promoter, don’t get hurt…it’s really challenging. Just like racing! From that day i continued to do more and more shows.

Seems like you travel a lot for your shows?

Yeah, my truck gets a pile of miles, i went to Florida several times, the Midwest, i traveled about 50,000 miles last year. it’s part of the job, you have to be present at all the shows to get some more dates!!

You also do some local stuff??Yes, i’ve jumped at the Lebanon Valley

open house, the carlisle import car show and coming up is Shortersville Monster truck show at the end of July.

So the bulk of your shows are with the Monster Truck exhibition?

At the beginning it was, but now it’s more all FMX show, east cost Xtrem (my team) put a contest together, demo at street fair, concerts, grand opening etc….

it’s fairly easy to set up anywhere with the mobile ramp (we have a full set up

ramp+ landing) and the concept is known through the X-game so it’s easy to put on the market.

Cool! Now that you know both MX and FMX really good, which is harder or easier?

Well back in the day, freestyle was fairly easy. All you needed was the courage to hit the ramps, but today the level of the new tricks is so high that if you don’t practice everyday, if your bike is not set up right, you fall behind! Again like in racing… if you make a small mistake on a 75-foot jump on a metal-to-metal ramp, it could turn ugly really quick! You can’t go balls out and go crazy, you’ll guarantee to get hurt. it takes time to get it down right.

So, to answer your question, i think they’re both equally hard when you try to excel at it…

So, can you make living doing this?Yes, you could but there is some time

between shows and i prefer to have a job so i’m guaranteed to pay my bills, i’m a subcontractor for Dell, i fix computers.

Plus i have a few companies who support me:

oFF roAD MotorSPortS, ProcAK ASSociAteS, boYeSen, ogio, SrH cLotHing, utoPiA oPticS, ecXFMX.coM, FMXiLLuStrAteD.coM

Also a special thanks to god because all of this is possible through him… and my family, my girlfriend and my friends.

Well, thanks a lot for your time and good luck this summer!

thank you and see you at the next show and check out:

Motorcycle Racing Action Assumes No Responsibility For Errors

back at the beginning of the last century motorcycles were little more than bicycles with an engine attached. You’d think that if you wanted to bolt an engine onto a bicycle the logical location would be within the confines of the frame tubes but some of the first iterations had the engine mounted on the side of the rear wheel or above it, some even drove the front wheel. thankfully though it became standard practice to mount the engine within the frames triangulated section and drive the rear wheel. For us looking back it’s hard to imagine what it must have been like owning and operating one of these first powered two wheelers.

Many early motorcycles had an engine with no transmission and no clutch. A belt usually made of leather connected the drive pulley on the engine to a much larger one on the rear wheel, sometimes nearly as large as the wheel itself.

these belts were nothing like what we are accustomed to today. there were many different variations; some looked like a thick piece of rope while others were more sophisticated made up of many cut pieces of leather pinned together looking more like something to keep your trousers up. getting caught in the rain usually resulted in the belt slipping and the rider pushing a lot. With the engine directly connected to the rear by a belt it meant to start the bike it had to be pushed (or pedaled up to speed) once started it was jump on and go.

once moving flat ground and gentle hills could be taken in stride, steeper inclines required the rider to jump off and run along side till reaching the top. As the engine revs rose so did the speed up to about 25 MPH maybe 30 downhill with a flowing wind, very impressive to the young ladies i imagine. 30 mph was probably quite a rush especially with no brakes. You see it’s a bit like the tin can, it wasn’t until years after its invention that someone invented the can opener.

braking was achieved using engine compression and shoe leather. Some of the first brakes looked very

similar to what you see on a bicycle today except they didn’t use rubber pads squeezed against the wheel rim but rather wood. i wonder which supplied the best braking power oak or ash, regardless i’m sure that spirited braking was rewarded with a very pleasant aroma.

eventually clutch systems of a sort were devised. one of the first attempts that could be considered a clutch involved nothing more than a foot operated tensioner. the rider would press a pedal with his foot that would move an idler wheel against the belt, taking the slack out of the belt would allow it to grab on the pulleys and away you go. releasing pressure on the pedal allowed the belt to go slack cutting the drive to the rear wheel, you could now come to a halt without having to stop the engine. Modulating pressure on the pedal was just like slipping a clutch, this was a giant leap forward in convenience but it was also hard on our leather drive belts which would heat up and glaze when slipped too much.

Lest you think why not use a chain, well some did but chain “snatch” was hard on engines and rear wheels, where as a belt had some slip and give a chain had none and therefore shocks were transmitted to components at both ends usually with costly results. remember too that we weren’t dealing with a lot of horsepower so a belt did work but as power levels rose and chains became a necessity the solution to chain snatch was some type of cushioned drive, usually springs or rubber dampers fitted inside the rear wheel to absorb the shock. Many of today’s street bikes still have a system very similar to this for just the same reason. Dirt bikes originally had it too but eventually the cushioning set up was moved to within the clutch assembly removing excess weight from the wheel plus our tires on dirt don’t have the traction characteristics a street tire exhibits on asphalt.

one of the earliest carburetors was called the surface carb and this thing was downright scary. Fuel was collected in a brass cup with an

open top, just above the surface of the fuel was a pipe which was the engines intake and led directly to the intake valve. the bottom of the cup was heated thus heating the fuel (i don’t remember how it was done, at this point i was just counting all the ways this was wrong) the vapor which rose from the surface was sucked up by the intake pipe into the engine for combustion. not very efficient. i wonder if this was what Jerry Lee Lewis sang about in great balls of Fire.

early lighting systems were basically gas lamps. Acetylene and water were mixed which resulted in a flammable vapor which when fed into a reflective chamber and ignited supplied a level of illumination that probably better served the pedestrian being able to see the bike coming rather than the rider being able to see the pedestrian.

Suspension systems came in a myriad of forms. Springs came first supplying a very exciting ride

over rough ground with no damping units to keep them under control. Friction dampers were the first attempt at controlling the energy built up in a coiled spring. A friction damper is just what it sounds like. over tightening a pivot point until it wouldn’t move freely but rather required some effort was the initial solution if somewhat bass ackward. With this set up the suspension had a butt load of “damping” initially but as soon as it broke loose and started to move its resistance to moving dropped significantly so it was stiffest at the top and bottom of stroke.

Do we have it better today? invariably so. but in fifty years someone will probably write an article deriding hydraulic suspension and four stroke engines, who knows the two stroke might be back on top again by then.

college boy action thru the first turn. Joshua Stein (177) races to the overall win.

round # 7 of 11 found itself at the Doublin gap Mx Park in mid July. Along with it came extreme temperatures and humidity, close to 600 racers and the 1st Annual Kevin crine silent auction. Kevin was a local pro mx racer that tragically lost his life in a car accident earlier this year. Kevin left the sport that he participated in for so many years to start a family just a short time ago.

racers and fans alike again stepped up to the plate for this worthy cause. items were donated by many of the top pro racers and local businesses who support our sport. Shenandoah Honda donated a pit bike, there was a travis Pastrana helmet and signed jerseys from the likes of carmichael, Stewart, Hepler and Lawrence.

over $7000.00 was raised with one bidder paying over $2200.00 for two of the pro jerseys alone with Doublin gaps rod Yentzer donating $800.00 for a

helmet. i would like to commend all who participated and gave to help support the crine family with all monies going to a fund for Kevin’s son to help brighten his future.

As usual the racing action was red hot and the gates were packed. Kudos goes out to all racers who participated on this day. the second motos were a little slower that the first as the heat was beginning to take its toll.

big winners on the day included the Flying Frenchman greg Pamart; Pamart won three expert divisions on the day and continues to lead the 250A points in both the MDrA and ultimate series. tyler Hawk and Kameron Page took multiple wins each in the mini divisions with colton bailey dominating 250 b and Four Stroke. the gates were stacked full of Loretta’s contenders as all qualified are getting ready for the big show.

Doublin gaps next big event will be

round # 9 of the MDrA Series the weekend of August 19 -20. remember there is a Saturday practice before the Sunday race day. And don’t forget to check out Doublin on a daily basis as they are now offering a full blown practice facility, see details in their ad elsewhere in MrA. As always event pics from today’s race can be viewed at www.mcracingaction.com.

Wednesday night July 19th was the kickoff for the 12th Annual timonium outdoor Short track Series promoted by the baltimore county trail riders and the cockeysville optimist club. each year a six race summer series is held at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in honor of the late bctrA club member, Kevin Mcnicholas to help benefit the cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

this event continues to grow and round # 1 drew a record 223 riders to timonium to bang bars around the 1/10th mile pony ring. the 2006 opener broke the record by more than 40 riders, pretty impressive for a Wednesday evening race in the middle of a heat wave.

the Sportsman class was the first group to the line. After a first turn pile up and a re-start the green flag dropped and it was timonium veteran Jason isennock off the line in first place. isennock would lead from start to finish to take home his first win of the 2006 series.

the 450/open A Stock frame class brought Suzuki backed Jake Johnson to the line against Scott Powersports sponsored raun

Wood. these two local Pro’s put on a show you wouldn’t want to miss and in the end it was Johnson with the win. they went right back at it in the Mod class and Wood was able to redeem himself grabbing the checkers this time around followed by Johnson and isennock.

other two class winners on the night included the always-popular bobby babcock in the Vet and Senior div- isions, with

young Danny bromley grabbing the wins in the Youth 100 race and the 85cc (7-11) race. Samantha resch would take home the win in the Womens group with rJ Hart winning the 750 main.

the timonium Summer Series runs Wednesdays and Friday nights thru August 11th. if you would like more information log onto their website at www.bctra.com and to view event photos from this years series, check out www.mcracingaction.com.
