Classroom ExpectationsThis is an environment in which students

can feel free to share ideas, build each other up, sharpen your skills and grow

within the field of mathematics. In order for us all to succeed, there are certain expectations that I have of

everyone. If we can all follow these guidelines and fulfill our potential, this can be a fun, exciting, and successful year. That being said, here are the

expectations:

Curriculum OutlineAlgebra IThis course follows the Algebra I course outline.

“College Prep” – Comprehensive course coverage with moderate-quick pacing and in-depth exploration. Students are expected to participate actively and work independently.

The course begins with a review of the skills that will lead students into algebraic concepts, and covers many topics including: systems of linear equations, inequalities, properties of real numbers, graphing linear equations, functions, quadratics, rational and irrational expressions, and exponents.

The text is McDougal Littell’s Algebra 1, withsupplemental material provided throughout.

Curriculum OutlineAdvanced Placement StatisticsThis course follows the A.P. Statistics course outline. It is a fast-paced, thorough investigation into varied aspects of probabilty and statistics, designed to prepare the student for the A.P. Exam in May.

In this class, we explore the essentials of qualitative and inferential statistical analysis. This includes frequency distributions, charts and graphs, variance, standard deviation, probability, hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, and more. Keeping up with homework, classwork, reading, writing and study skills is essential.

An emphasis is placed on the role of statistics in the “real world,” and how this knowledge base can positively impact our lives. Connections are drawn to the fields of marketing, medicine, the stock market, and business, among others.

The text is Freeman, The Practice of Statistics.

Curriculum OutlineMath with Business ApplicationsThis class is often a recommended placement by guidance counselors for students who require a third math credit for graduation, but have struggled with math in the past. Regardless of the situation, this may be the most useful math class that your child will ever take. We cover such topics as checking and savings accounts, credit cards, budgeting, housing and vehicle costs, loan repayments, the stock market, interest, getting a job, resume and interview skills, paychecks, taxes, and investments. Classwork and participation are essential components to the successful completion of this class.

The text is Glencoe’s Mathematics with Business Applications.

Grading Quizzes and tests are given in the middle and end of

units to assess learning. Advance notice is given in order to adequately prepare; generally 3 – 4 days.

Quizzes are averaged and contribute to the quarter grade. A.P. Stats & Business Math: 30% Algebra 1: 40%

Tests are averaged and contribute to the quarter grade. A.P. Stats: 60% Business Math: 45% Algebra 1: 50%

Homework is averaged and contribute to the quarter grade. A.P. Stats & Algebra 1: 10% Business Math (Classwork): 25%

Classroom participation and behavior aide in learning.

Grading Homework

Homework will be assigned nearly every day. The exceptions are before and after a test or quiz, and over a holiday.

Homework is checked and reviewed at the start of every class. Late homework will not be accepted in any course.

All homework is compiled and the averaged grade contributes to the quarter grade.

Is there any extra help?

No student should have to struggle through notes, homework, or unfamiliar concepts on his or her own. I am available after school most days until 3:00pm to offer extra help, reteaching, homework assistance, quiz/test review, or anything else that might be needed.

Technology The class makes use of technology in

lessons, examples, and interactive learning. All students are provided with scientific

and Texas Instruments 83-Plus graphing calculators for use in classwork, as well as on most tests and quizzes. I instruct students in their proper use, and utilize the Promethean Board every day for interactive lessons.

The purchase of a graphing calculator is mandatory in A.P. Statistics, and highly advisable for Algebra 1, and in the future.

CommunicationOpen lines of communication are paramount in providing quality education. If a student habitually underperforms on tests or quizzes (usually below 70%), or if the timely completion of homework is an obstacle, I will be in contact with you.
