New Senior Student section offered an alternative for student participantsA new senior student section was set up with effect from TKKYIA2009. This section is targeted for students between 19 and 26 years old. Previously, this group of students could only participate in the open section and they had to compete with entries from research institutes or industry. The response to the new senior Student section was good and it attracted 142 entries from eligible students, among which 15 were awarded.

OverviewTKKYIA2009 received a total of 925 entries. More than 70% were submitted by Primary and Secondary school students. 70 awards were given out including 21 in Junior Student section, 20 in Student section, 15 in Senior Student section, 9 inOpen section and 5 inDefence Science section.Thecompetition attracted participation from 126 schools, including 46 primary schools, 62 secondary schools, 6 junior colleges and 7 Institutes of Technical Education (ITE).

Award Presentation & ExhibitionTKKYIA2009 presentation ceremony and opening of exhibition were successfully held on 23 May 2009. Ms Grace Fu, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of National Development and Ministry of Education, graced the ceremony and officiated the openingof theexhibitionasGuest-Of-Honor.More than 550 guests attended the award ceremony and exhibition.

The winning entries were displayed at the Science Centre Singapore from 23 to 30 May 2009. In conjunction with the Exhibition, Science Centre organised Inventors’ Week Programmes. A range

of fun and innovative programmes were lined up from 26 to 29 May 2009. There were separate workshops for Primary and Secondary students. Some hands-on activities were tailored to nurture young inventors. After the workshop, students were invited to view the TKKYIA 2009 winning entries in the exhibition gallery.The TKKYIA is a joint collaboration of Tan Kah Kee Foundation, Agency for Science Technology and Research and the Defence Science and Technology Agency with support of Science Centre Singapore.

IAThe 7th Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors’ Award (Shanghai) marked the collaboration between the Tan Kah Kee Foundation and Shanghai Science and Technology Association. The competition received a total of 242 entries with 119 fromOpen section and 123 fromStudent section, about 30% increase as compared with the total entries of 185 for 2008. 81 inventions were awarded including the 2 remarkable gold awards, 1 in open and 1 in student section respectively.

Chan Cheow Thia 曾昭程MasterofPhilosophyinAsian&MiddleEasternStudiesUniversity of Cambridge赴英国剑桥大学攻读亚洲与中东研究硕士学位

Cheow Thia graduated as top student in Chinese Literature from Fudan University.

CurrentlyworkingasacurriculumplanningofficerattheMinistryofEducation,CheowThiahas been involved in the implementation of the new Chinese language modular curriculum in primary schools, which is a very challenging and meaningful task as it has to accommodate the needs of a wide spectrum of learners.

Outsidework,CheowThiaservesastheVice-PresidentoftheTangent,aregisteredSingaporecivilsocietygroupwhichdiscusses current affairs issues mainly in the Chinese language, as well as promotes cross-cultural communication through the organization of public forums and publication of a biannual journal. The most recent projects which Cheow Thia was actively involved included the curation of an exhibition “Education at Large: Student Life and Activities in Singapore, 1945 - 1965” that examined the different facets of youth during the post-war to pre-independence period and the publication of a special bilingual issue of the journal, entitled The Makers and Keepers of Singapore History.

Tan Kah Kee Postgraduate Scholarship Presentation (TKKPS) 2009Seven outstanding candidates were awarded the prestigious scholarship among a total of 116 applications. They will pursue their postgraduate studies in awidevarietyoffields.The selectioncommitteewasveryimpressed with their academic achievement as well as their commitments to community service.

The Presentation Ceremony for TKKPS 2009 is scheduled on 15 August 2009 at the National Library Board. Mr Sam Tan Chin Siong, ParliamentarySecretaryforMinistryofTradeandIndustry&Ministryof Communications and the Arts, will grace the ceremony as Guest-Of-Honor. MsTangTee Khoon, top violinist who is the second-everrecipient of the J.B. Guadagnini violin loaned under NAC violin loan scheme and one of TKKPS alumni members, will perform during the presentation ceremony.

Joanne Lim Hwee Hoon 林慧雯Master of Laws (Taxation) London School of Economics and Political Science赴伦敦政治经济学院攻读法律学(税务)硕士学位

Joanne obtained her Bachelor and Master’s degree in Economics from University of Wisconsin-Madison and Yale university respectively. She is currently Head of Trade Management and Policy at the Singapore Economic Development Board.

Academically trained as an economist, Joanne began her career with the Economic Development Board but had the rare opportunity to be seconded to Ernst&YoungShanghaibetween2006and2008togain private sector insights. She fondly recalls how

just over a year ago, she and her parents had stood under a large statue of Mr Tan Kah Kee at the elegant campus of Xiamen University and discussed his lifelong fervour for education. She did not expect that she would have the privilege of becoming a direct beneficiary ayear later.

Outsideofwork, Joanne is fascinatedby languages,socio-economic issues and photography. She participates in community service and was, among others, the printing coordinator of the Singapore International Photography Festival last year.

Khartini Binte Abdul Khalid Master of Arts in International Relations The Fletcher School, Tufts University赴美国塔夫茨大学攻读国际关系学硕士学位

Khartini graduated from National University of Singapore with Bachelor of Arts. She has worked as a journalist with Singapore Press Holdings for seven years. As a reporter with the national Malay newspaper, Berita Harian, she covered many events including the General Elections 2001, the Asean Summit and tsunami disaster.

Currently, Khartini is a lecturer in Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s School of Interdisciplinary Studies, where she teaches current affairs and Social Psychology. She is particularly interested in issues on humanitarian and political crisis occurring in Asean countries and the Middle East.

She spends Friday nights volunteering as a petition case writer in the Punggol Central constituency, helping draft letters for residents in need of various forms of help. She is also a grassroots volunteer and among others, is the editor of Sengkang Focus, a publication by the Sengkang Community Club. She is a council member of the North East CDC and is a member of the National Integration Council Working Group for Community.

Ng How Wee 黄浩威Mphil/PhD in the Department of China and Inner AsiaSchoolofOrientalandAfricanStudies, University of London赴伦敦大学亚非学院攻读中国与内亚州学博士学位

How Wee graduated from Peking University in 2000 with a Bachelor Degree in Chinese Language and Literature. He obtained his Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the National Institute of Education Singapore in 2003 and was conferred Master of Arts by Nanyang Technological University in 2009.

He has been teaching at Nanyang Junior College since 2003 and was awarded the “Most inspiring Chinese Teachers Award” in 2005 for his creativity and engaging teaching style.

Performance, popular media, literature and contemporary China have always been How Wee’s areas of interests and he hopes to continue to contribute to the development of education, academia and arts in

Singapore after he completes his doctorate programme.

See Kok Heng Geoffrey 施国兴 Master of Arts in East Asian Studies Yale University赴美国耶鲁大学攻读东亚研究硕士学位

Geoffrey graduated Summa Cum Laude as a Joseph Wharton Scholar from the University of Pennsylvania (Wharton School) in 2.5 years.

Geoffrey is interested in research in a business school and hopes to reshape the mission of business education. He previously founded innovative social entrepreneurial projects promoting urban healthcare and arts markets, allowing him to share his approach at the World Bank Annual Bank Conference on Development Economics in

Japan and at the 11th World Business Dialogue in Germany as an award winner. He also worked as a researcher for the World Economic Forum, consulted for the World Bank, and used research findings onCorporate Ethics in China to advise AXA Investment Managers and Goldman Sachs International. His interest in tackling global problems has led him to suggest policy ideas, winning the Monetary Authority of Singapore’s Economics Competition thrice.

Geoffrey is now working to build academic exchanges between North Korea and Singapore.

Dawn Tan May Leng 陈美玲Doctor of Clinical Physiotherapy University of Melbourne赴澳大利亚墨尔本大学攻读临床物理治疗医学博士学位

Dawn graduated from King’s College London in 1999, and completed her Masters in Neurological Physiotherapy with the University of Melbourne in 2006. She is currently working in Singapore General Hospital, and has been involved in the rehabilitation of patients with neurological conditions for eight years. Her areas of interests include stroke, Parkinson’s Disease and vestibular rehabilitation. She has a passion for research and had presented in variouslocalscientificconferences.

Besides being actively involved in the local Parkinson’s support group and stroke club, Dawn had also served in the executive committee of professional associations like the Singapore Physiotherapy Association, Singapore National Stroke Association (SNSA) and Parkinson’s Disease Society of Singapore. She had done some overseas volunteer work with children in Cambodia, youths in Thailand, and was involved in the training of physiotherapists in Myanmar and Cambodia.

Dawn strives to improve the quality of patient care and outcomes through evidence-based physiotherapy practice.

Yow Wei Quin 邱慧娟PhD in Psychology Stanford University赴美国斯坦福大学攻读心理学博士学位

Wei Quin graduated from National University of Singapore and completed her masters of Science in Statistics with Stanford University.

Wei Quin’s main research interest is in examining the impact of growing up bilingual on children’s social and cognitive development. She is also interested in the various factors affecting students’ academic motivation and the impact of these factors on their academic achievement. Committed to apply her academic knowledge to the real worldandbenefitthesocietyasawhole,WeiQuinhopesto nurture and establish an (bilingual) environment that is vital for young children to grow and develop. She has also given talks on bilingualism and academic motivation at some educational institutions in Singapore.

Besides her interest and passion in research, Wei Quin hasapenchantforChinesemartialarts(specificallytaiji).She has represented Singapore in various international competitions as well as Stanford University in wushu collegiate competitions. She has served as a judge in wushu collegiate competition, and conducted wushu performances and lessons for fundraising efforts, old folks’ home and orphanage.

Pioneers’ Memorial Hall

Pioneers’ Memorial Hall

TheMemorial Hall was officially opened on 9 Nov 2008 by Minister of Finance MrTharmanShanmugaratnam.HerExcellencyZhangXiaokang,PRCAmbassadortoSingapore, was invited to witness the opening. More than 100 distinguished guests joined the opening ceremony.

In his speech, Minister commended Foundation’s effort in setting up the Pioneers’ Memorial Hall to commemorate the legacies of Singapore’s founding pioneers.

The Memorial Hall is opened to the public from 2pm to 6pm daily (except Monday).

Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced on 16 Jun 2009 that the name of Down Town 8 station (outside the Hwa Chong Institution) along the future Downtown Line is to be “Tan Kah Kee Foundation”.

The naming of that station after Mr Tan Kah Kee is very meaningful. It is in recognition of Mr Tan Kah Kee’s remarkable contributions to Singapore. It will help commuters especially young generation to get to know our pioneer.

The Foundation is prepared to offer its support and help in setting up a mini-museum in the station to promote philanthropy.
