“A HEART THAT LOVES IS ALWAYS YOUNG.” THIS ANCIENT GREEK PROVERB WAS PERHAPS FORESHADOWING WHAT WOULD UNFOLD IN THE LIVES OF PEGGY AND ALEX, WHO HAVE KNOWN EACH OTHER SINCE THEY WERE RUNNING AROUND IN NAPPIES. IT APPEARS LOVE WAS ALWAYS ON THE CARDS FOR THESE TWO, IT WAS JUST A MATTER OF TIME.

With strong family ties, it was inevitable that Peggy and Alex would gravitate towards each other again, even after having lost contact for 9 years. A chance encounter one night set this destined pair back on the road to happily ever after.

Peggy and Alex’s big fat Greek wedding was traditional on all counts, including the many detailed preparations, the high level of emotion, the enormous guest list and the spectacular celebration.

The very special ceremony was held at the Greek Orthodox Church in Wellington. A Greek service is rich in history, with a strong focus on the vows between the couple and God. And as serious as Greek culture is about this part of the wedding, they are equally serious about having a great time afterwards with their many friends and family. Peggy and Alex were no exception.

Inviting their 300+ guests to Macs Bar and Brewery was a decision the couple was very happy with. “It had a great party feel about it, with a large bar and balcony – exactly how we wanted to spend our wedding day”. And party they did! One of the things Peggy wouldn’t change for the world? “Getting down and dancing with my friends and family – especially at 2.30am!”

This fun loving and popular couple are well known and respected in Wellington’s Greek community. It was with the help and support of many friends and family, in particular “koumbara” Athina (Greek best woman), good friend Veronica Young and Peggy’s beloved Mum, that they pulled together an exquisite, tasteful and fun-filled celebration that still has people talking now!

CHILDHOOD SWEETHEARTS

Peggy has worked as a graphic designer for TBD Design for over 10 years, so it was no surprise that getting the stationery right was crucial for her. “I have done so many invites over the years, that when it came to mine I wanted to do something classy and classic, with no cost spared! It’s all about the invites!” Peggy designed a monogram that she had embossed on the front of the invitations for a personalised and elegant look.

Peggy used many online websites and blogs for style inspiration and ideas, and when it came time to make the big decisions she knew exactly where to turn. Woodstock Florist provided the flowers which perfectly suited Peggy’s carefully selected colour palette. The bride donned a Karen Willis Holmes creation from the very popular and glamorous Confetti Bridal. Peggy then accessorised with a separately purchased belt and gloves to give her a unique and striking look. Earl & English custom-made the groom’s exquisite suit and the groomsmen looked dashing in Frank Casey. Aristocrat Auto Hire ensured the beautiful couple made it to the church on time, and most importantly to the celebrations in style!

Last but not least, the fabulous team at Fineline Photography shot the stunning images of the pair and their wedding party. Peggy and Alex rate this as one of the most special parts of their day. Peggy says “Wow what can I say, taking the photos was so enjoyable! We went to a park on Mount Victoria, and it was simply magical. We got some great shots up there, while enjoying champagne and a picnic. The photographers were awesome; it all was so much fun. I didn’t expect the photos to be like that, what a surprise!” What a credit to the team, and the glorious results speak for themselves.

Keeping the romance alive and living life to the fullest seems to be the motto Alex and Peggy have adopted throughout their combined lives. Their wedding may have been a huge success, but so was the proposal. “It was my 30th birthday and Alex took me out for an early morning picnic on a hilltop that had a 360 degree view of Wellington. Whilst eating my bagel and sipping ice tea (my favourites!) he had prepared for me, he popped the question! We then went to Martin Bosely’s for a beautiful lunch. After that to my parents’ house to pass on the good news. And then we spent the night at “The Keep” in Houghton Bay.

But it’s not just all about high life and parties for these two. With family meaning the world to this young couple, there’s always plenty of heartfelt emotion to go along with their joie de vivre. It’s then perhaps even more poignant that Peggy shares this special story...

“Many years ago Alex’s uncle Peter (who was also my godfather) was married to my first cousin, who is also my namesake, Peggy Boolieris. Peggy sadly passed away soon after they were married, at the same time my mother fell pregnant with me. The family felt that this was a kind of blessing, and hence I was named after her... Peggy. When Alex and I got engaged it eventually dawned on me that I would become Mrs Peggy Boolieris, truly completing the cycle of the past. Most people who know this story simply can’t believe how amazing it is. It surely is destiny at its best.”

We’d have to agree! And we are sure Peggy is smiling down from heaven.

OVER THE PAST 10 YEARS I HAVE HAD THE HONOUR OF RUNNING ONE OF WELLINGTON’S MOST HISTORIC VENUES ‘ERSKINE’ IN ISLAND BAY. THE CHAPEL REALLY MUST BE SEEN TO BE BELIEVED – A STUNNING VAULTED CEILING, ITALIAN MARBLE ALTAR AND THE MOST GORGEOUS STAINED – GLASS WINDOWS FROM GERMANY. THE GRAND DINING ROOM IS SUPER STYLISH, COMPLETE WITH OUTDOOR COURTYARD AND LAWN AREA.

I love to see guests arrive at Erskine for the first time with a look of amazement and disbelief all at the same time. Sadly Erskine closed on 15th April 2012, deemed an earthquake risk. I have to say I have fallen in love with her and it will leave a very big hole in my heart. As much as I have loved working in such a special building, it is the many weddings and gorgeous couples that will leave the most precious memories. I have seen over 400 weddings at Erskine – all of them unique and special. My favourite time of the day is preparing the bride before she walks down the aisle, I get goose-bumps every time.

So it seemed fitting that we photograph the very last fashion shoot at Erskine

for ‘Mr & Mrs’, our last dance. We wanted to showcase fashion that was

uniquely ‘Wellington’, as we are the Coolest Little Capital in the World. We

were privileged enough to work with Wellington’s top fashion designers –

Alison Blain, Sophie Voon, Helen Forster and Deryn Schmidt. Wellington is

also famous for its vintage fashion shops and we were lucky enough to have

two fabulous his and hers outfits from Ziggurat in Cuba St. And what could

be more iconic in Wellington than Westfield Queensgate? Every girl loves a

good shopping mall, where the sun always shines and time doesn’t matter.

We just love our Westfield wedding outfits, very chic and super cute!

A very big thank you to my amazing team – your commitment and dedication

is simply incredible. Thank you to all our brides and grooms who have shared

their wedding journeys with us. I know you will love their stories.

The closure of Erskine and other historic Wellington buildings will have a big

effect on the Wellington wedding scene. Who knows what the future holds,

but we can be sure that Wellington couples will find a way to make their love

known. The place of your marriage becomes part of you and your memories

forever. It makes me feel so much better knowing how many people have

Erskine in their heart, I know I do.

Love Paula

THE ITALIANS HAVE A SAYING, “SPOSA BAGNATA, SPOSA FORTUNATA”, WHICH MEANS A WET BRIDE IS A LUCKY BRIDE. AND THAT IS EXACTLY HOW OLIVIA CLARK FELT THE DAY SHE MARRIED HER SWEETHEART TAMA KIRIKIRI. IT MAY HAVE RAINED AND RAINED, BUT TO THE HAPPY COUPLE IT ONLY ADDED TO THE UNIQUE MAGIC OF THEIR SPECIAL DAY.

Olivia and Tama may have met in Wellington 8 years ago, but their romance has taken them all around the globe. Together this fun loving couple have visited around 45 countries, with many once-in-a-lifetime moments shared along the way. Olivia jokes that she has had plenty of practice honeymoons already! “We have had so many adventures travelling together, walking on the Great Wall of China, riding camels in the Sahara, a hot air balloon over Egypt, paragliding in Turkey, train rides in India... it’s great to have so many memories in common to look back on together.” The couple’s joie de vivre is clear, and so it comes as no surprise that Tama’s proposal was also made in spectacular fashion – in a French Restaurant, followed by Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London, and bubbles in Soho no less. Ooh la la!

After 5 years exploring the world, this grounded couple returned home just in time to make one of the very last days of 2011 their wedding day, and so forth commence the rest of their lives back in their beloved New Zealand.

Reflecting on their magnificent country wedding has Olivia and Tama come alive with recollections of the many joyous moments. The big event took place at the famous Hiwinui Country Estate, located just outside Palmerston North. The venue provided a stunning setting with a beautiful lake and rolling hills – complete with ducks and sheep – all making for an impressive backdrop for photographs. The style of the wedding was classic elegance with a hint of vintage dotted throughout. The bride opted for a tasteful mix of colours, including charcoal, ivory and white with a little flush of pale pink in the bouquets. Olivia created the look for the wedding herself, and was well-qualified to do so, having previously worked for

Paula Bevege Events – a perfect forum for her innate styling talents. The candle holders used on the day were even on loan from Paula Bevege Events, and a lovely nod to Olivia’s previous career in the event planning business. Close family friend Barbara Lockett assisted greatly with creating the floral decorations on the tables, with most of the stunning blooms coming from her very own garden!

Olivia herself looked dazzling in her Caroline Castigliano handcrafted designer wedding dress, purchased in London before returning home. The bride’s good friend Michelle Siou took care of the makeup for the bride, bridesmaids, flower girl and mother of the bride with stunning results.

Frank Casey ensured the groom and groomsmen were also suitably attired for the big event. The result – a beautiful bridal party.

There were many highlights on Olivia and Tama’s special day, but one in particular was the two weddings singers, Howard McGuire and Conrad Noema, who saw to it that there was a wonderful ambience and vibe present for the couple and their guests to share and enjoy.

Hester Guy Catering served the mouth-watering food, and many people called the delicious wedding menu the best they had ever had.

Kate MacPherson shot the amazing images of the day, and in spite of the rain (or perhaps even because of it) the photos portray a warmth and atmosphere that many a sunshine wedding could easily be envious of.

And the Amazing Travelling Photobooth ensured that there were some fabulous candid shots for the bride and groom and guests alike.

Listening to the couple recount their day, it is clear to see that they enjoyed every moment. Again and again the emphasis comes back to family, which was very much the cornerstone of the wedding, and in large what made it so special for Olivia and Tama. Olivia shares “We are both real family people, and we feel very lucky to have such wonderful families. They all helped so much with the wedding, which we will always be grateful for.”

The speeches from greatly loved family members brought much laughter as well as a few tears, and when talking about what’s important Olivia and Tama share that having a family of their own is definitely top of the list. Moving towards the future the couple is now looking at purchasing their first home together, and making their dreams a reality.

So lastly, how would Olivia and Tama describe the 30th of December 2011? “It was a day full of love, laughter, amazing food, wine and beer, a groovy photobooth and even some impromptu haka. The only thing we didn’t expect was the rain. It rained and rained and rained, but they do say it’s good luck!”

And if age old traditions are anything to go by, that’s certainly true. But we don’t need rain to foretell that Olivia and Tama are the stuff happily ever after is made of!

THE AMORA HOTEL WELLINGTON HAS BEEN MAJESTICALLY OCCUPYING ITS PRIME CENTRAL CITY LOCATION FOR MANY YEARS. A LONG TIME FAVOURITE OF MANY, THIS GORGEOUS HOTEL HAS RECENTLY RECEIVED A FULL MAKEOVER AND FABULOUS REFURBISHMENT, MORPHING IT FROM A GREAT HOTEL INTO AN EXCEPTIONAL ONE.

With breathtaking harbour views second to none, the Amora really does have it all. Yet, not many people know exactly what that means. Not everyone is aware that this captivating hotel is one of Wellington’s largest accommodation and event spaces in Wellington, thus rendering it the absolutely perfect all-inclusive wedding venue.

As soon as you set foot inside the Amora you will be very impressed. Sumptuous and stunning, the elegance and luxury literally envelopes you, and makes you feel as though you have landed in a puff of well-being and happiness. ensure everything is just as you had imagined. This has proven to be a huge attraction for many nationalities; Syrian, Lebanese, Indian and Greek to name a few – and of course not forgetting good old traditional Kiwis looking for tasteful choices to impress their guests! People from all walks of life, backgrounds and cultures can get married at the Amora, and have the exact food they want and the perfect venue size to accommodate their guests, as well as have everything else taken care of too. From tables, chairs, plates and glasses to entertainment and theming, the capable staff at the Amora Hotel can organise it all. All you have to do is tell them what you would like, and they will make it happen! “We are the ultimate one-stop-shop for brides and grooms” explains Loryn.

To have one venue oversee everything is literally a weight off any busy couple’s mind, especially when the venue is as stunning as the newly renovated Amora hotel. Whilst the Amora makes it easy for you in every way, your unique touches and personal details will not be lost in the process. On the contrary, the team will work hard to ensure a wedding personalised just for you – completely one-off and inimitable in every way. Your guests will be extremely impressed and will come away feeling that not only have they had a great time, but also a wonderful “experience”.

As a part of getting married at the Amora, brides and grooms are treated to their first night as husband and wife in the exclusive “club suite”, complete with chocolates and late checkout. These rooms are absolutely

stunning, and with only 14 club suites in the entire hotel, this is pure VIP treatment. But don’t worry, your guests will be looked after too. The Amora can offer a group block-booking, so that guests can also spend the night, and even share a private breakfast together with you the next day to continue the celebrations, if you so desire. “This way it becomes a weekend affair everyone can enjoy” says Loryn. She has a good point, as this allows everyone to relax, stay in the same venue, and see each other the next day in a comfortable and enjoyable setting... all without tired parents and parents-in-law scrambling to put together a common practice “day after get-together” for friends and family in their own home.

With such ample facilities and the ability to tailor-make a unique celebration to fit a bride and groom’s needs, wants and wishes, the Amora is an ideal venue. Able to cater to any nationality and size, its central location allows for easy access to the waterfront or other colourful and cosmopolitan city areas for wedding photographs.

In terms of having it all, the Amora certainly has it covered. Loryn confirms this; “Given the opportunity we can and will create something very special, just for you.” And there’s no doubt she’s completely right.

*Book your wedding with Amora Hotel and mention this article, and you will receive a free night’s accommodation in the exquisite club suite for your first wedding anniversary – a chance to relive your dream all over again!

THEIR STORY READS LIKE THE SCRIPT OF A HOLLYWOOD ROMANCE. KATY AND CHRIS MET AMONGST THE GLAMOUR AND EXCITEMENT OF THE WELLINGTON CUP RACES IN JANUARY 2008. SLIGHTLY OVER A YEAR LATER, CHRIS OVERCAME HIS FEAR OF HEIGHTS TO PROPOSE TO KATY ATOP PARITUTU ROCK IN NEW PLYMOUTH. AND THAT WAS JUST THE BEGINNING OF THEIR MANY ADVENTURES.

Katy and Chris threw a twist into the traditional wedding fairytale by eloping shortly after, with only their parents as witnesses and swearing them to secrecy until their official wedding day in 2011. Understandably a difficult decision, but it forged a special bond between the six people present on that extraordinary day. The couple’s desire to work and travel overseas was what had fuelled their decision to elope, but the reasons for getting married were, as they both say, “endless”.

Eventually Katy and Chris sent their family and friends an email from Portugal announcing that they were indeed married. This spurred them on to have a series of “mini-weddings” all over the world, which was a great lead up to the grand finale, the big wedding back home in New Zealand. Katy says “It has been an amazing experience. I married the same man more than once!”

When it came to planning the wedding – not an easy task undertaken from distant Qatar – they wanted their day to be relaxed, with the focus on finally sharing their marriage with the special people in their lives. Katy poured over the internet and spent countless hours searching for and emailing suppliers in NZ. She describes the highlight of planning, every time she managed to secure a supplier for the “big ticket” items, such as the fantastic Jono Tucker who captured breathtaking photographs of the couple. Katy and Chris were also very pleased with their stunning wedding venue, the Boatshed in Wellington. They say “Brooke, the Boatshed manager, is amazingly brilliant to deal with. She was so helpful, which is just what we needed being on the other side of the world”. The Boatshed rewarded them by providing a perfect backdrop for photographs and being conveniently located for guests. Katy and Chris opted for a cocktail style wedding with nibbles rather than a sit-down meal. Simply Food did a great job ensuring guests were well taken care of, with an abundant supply of delicious morsels served all night long. And their ever-popular signature rosebud cocktails provided wonderful refreshment for thirsty party guests.

Despite their wedding ending up a huge success, getting there was not without its challenges. In Katy’s case there was a pretty-significant “dress-drama”. Being in Qatar, with a vast array of skilled tailors on tap, Katy

thought she would be spoilt for choice. The tailor she selected seemed absolutely confident that he could produce a beautiful dress. The many subsequent visits saw things go from bad to worse, eventually leaving Katy no choice but to walk away. The only problem: the wedding day was a mere eight days away! This led to a frantic frenzy of wedding dress shopping at literally the very last minute – online, no less! However all is well that ends well, and the perfect dress was found just in the nick of time in the very stylish Sophie Voon Bridal Boutique. A relieved Katy says “I absolutely loved my dress, and Jemma, the Voon shop manager was an amazing help!” Katy remained unfazed throughout the series of events, which would have sent most other brides into a tailspin; saying simply “I felt amazing on the day, so it was all worth it.”

Katy’s sage advice to those getting married; “Enjoy every moment, especially on the big day. Even the hard moments become memories and stories, so just take them in your stride as best you can”.

Katy and Chris firmly believe the secret to the success of their wedding day was the fact they had absolute confidence in all of the people who were ‘running’ it: “If you have great suppliers who you know are brilliant, then you can sit back, let it all happen and have a blast!” And it seems they know what they are talking about.

Leone and Truman – 6th March 2011by Johanna Osborne

ALL WEDDINGS ARE BEAUTIFUL. BUT THERE IS SOMETHING INCREDIBLY COOL ABOUT A COUPLE TAKING THE TRADITIONAL ACT OF GETTING MARRIED AND TURNING IT INTO A UNIQUE CELEBRATION BETWEEN THEM OF EVERYTHING THAT MEANS SOMETHING TO THEM. THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT LEONE AND TRUMAN DID. THEY CAREFULLY CRAFTED A WEDDING CELEBRATION WITH A VAST ARRAY OF WONDERFUL DETAILS AND PERSONAL TOUCHES, AND AS A RESULT GAVE EVERYONE PRESENT THE EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME.

Leone and Truman’s wedding ceremony was set in Wellington’s beautiful Botanic Gardens, a very special place for the couple who has shared many treasured moments within the grounds. They opted for an intimate ceremony, followed by an afternoon picnic featuring desserts and a candy table, hula hoops, garden games and a dixieland band in the Dell. A magical time was had by all. The bride wore a beautiful dress and headpiece she had made herself. Following on from the enchanting service, there was a 2 hour wardrobe-change break, allowing guests to get into the spirit for the 1920s themed night that was to take place at Havana Bar. Why Havana Bar? “It’s where we had our first date and it is still a favourite watering hole. We love all the nooks and decor, and it was perfect for creating our wonderland.” Everyone was dressed to the nines with Leone clad in another self-made frock and headpiece, and both her and Truman donning fur coats - and of course - getting right into the festivities! Leone recalls this part of the day as a true highlight; “Our entrance and first dance at Havana was a great way to bust out in our new looks and kick off the evening.” Sarah Searancke Catering ensured that there was plenty of sustenance in the form of delicious tapas to impress the guests throughout the evening. A night of swinging hot jazz ensued, which saw the newlyweds walking to their hotel at 4am the next day!

Leone and Truman’s wedding day was full of fun moments, funny stories and special tales. Leone shares one such story with heartfelt emotion “I had always planned on giving my bouquet away to our good friend Lisa, who was our MC and partner of Truman’s bestman Sam, as a special thank you for all her help leading up to the wedding. Sam had been looking for that ‘special way’ to propose to Lisa. A plan was forged. I can still hear the gasp from the guests as Lisa came up to receive the bouquet, we hugged and Sam got down on one knee behind her. It was such an emotional and special moment to share with such close friends. The hardest secret I’ve ever had to keep! But I love surprises!” This anecdote certainly highlights what people-focused, warm-hearted and fun loving people Truman and Leone are. Inviting love into their celebration, sharing the moment and

helping others create treasured memories make this a unique wedding day for countless reasons.

Friends, celebrations and music have always played a big part in this couple’s life, with Leone and Truman first having met at a Jazzy Jeff concert when both were in their early 20s. Even Truman’s proposal featured music and humour, the recipe to this couple’s happiness. Leone explains “One Sunday morning I opened the door to what I thought were Hari Krishnas with all the drumming outside, only to find Truman on one knee strumming his ukulele and his friend on the bongo drums. He had written a song and I was most impressed he was able to strum and sing at the same time. I laughed most of the way through, as it had a similar Flight of the Concords humour with the lyrics, ‘I first fell in love with you... when I saw you... in your underwear’ complete with back up ‘in your underwear, in your underwear ooooo in your underwear’. It ended with a swift change of ukulele to ring box and ‘ooooo Lee... Will you marry me?”

Leone and Truman proudly have their own style, which is a true extension and reflection of their gregarious personalities. The couple decided early on that they wanted to share their unique love with everyone they care about, and that the motto for their wedding would be “our day, our way”. True to their word they held this vision close to their hearts, and by enlisting the help of some amazing suppliers who understood what they wanted, they could see their dream through to fruition. Being able to trust their suppliers was crucial; “When selecting some vendors we did have some people say, ‘that’s not normally how things are done’. We didn’t use those ones.”

When choosing who to use, picking a great photographer that would capture all the moments and details was at the forefront for Leone and Truman. The amazing images on the day were shot by de la Fuente Photography, and what a joy it was for Adrian and his team to photograph this delightful wedding. The pictures speak for themselves and portray the genuine happiness, fabulous festivity and pure celebration of life and love present on Leone and Truman’s magical day. The couple can’t praise de la Fuente Photography highly enough; “The best advice we got was from our photographer Adrian, who told us to take moments in the day to just breathe and take it all in. It really does go by so fast, but there were times where we would stop, take a deep breath, look around and just smile and enjoy being in the moment.”

The Photobooth Leone and Truman had at their wedding reception was also a huge hit. “It was great to see the progression of people loosening up after a few drinks. My dad was the biggest photobooth hog – it was like that one person who doesn’t get off the karaoke machine!”

And that concludes our snapshot of the very special day of the most humble couple, who asked for family recipes as gifts for their kai folder. A wedding ceremony, an enchanted garden, a proposal, a massive party, the 1920s and a 4am finish. Could it get any more fun and unique? Something tells us Leone and Truman are in for the ride of their lives, and they’re only just getting started! “We’re planning to start our family soon, but if we could squeeze in a little bit more travel that would be gold. And we’re still thinking of running away with the circus.”

I FIRST MET TRISH PERRINS FROM SIMPLY FOOD IN 2005 WHEN MY NOW-HUSBAND AND I WERE PLANNING OUR WEDDING. WE WERE AT THE BOATSHED CHECKING OUT THE VENUE, AND I WILL NEVER FORGET TRISH’S SMILING FACE GREETING US. SHE WAS SETTING UP FOR A WEDDING TO BE HELD THERE LATER IN THE DAY AND CLEARLY HAD A LOT TO DO, BUT SHE WAS MORE THAN HAPPY TO TALK TO US AND ANSWER OUR QUESTIONS. TRISH AND HER TEAM HAD THE ROOM LOOKING STUNNING IN NO TIME AND EVERYTHING WAS IN ITS PLACE. THERE WERE NO DOUBT COUNTLESS OTHER THINGS TO THINK OF AT THIS BUSY TIME OF HER DAY, BUT TRISH WAS CALM, HAPPY AND JOYFUL. IN FACT, SHE LOOKED LIKE SHE WAS LOVING EVERY MINUTE OF IT. IT BECAME IMMEDIATELY OBVIOUS TO US THAT SHE WOULD BE OUR CATERER.

SIMPLY FOOD – STYLISH, ELEGANT AND ALWAYS DELICIOUS

The decision to use Simply Food was one we certainly never regretted, in fact we were thrilled. Everyone at our wedding raved about the food, and not only about the quality but also the generous quantity. And since then we have used Simply Food for various other events, including our housewarming party and our son’s first and second birthdays. Friends of mine have been so impressed, they too have used Trish for their weddings and functions... and so it goes on. Word of mouth is a powerful tool, and whilst I can tell you a whole host of reasons to use Simply Food, once you try their delicious food for yourself you will know exactly what I mean.

Trish and her husband have owned and operated the Simply Food Catering Company since 1991 and it has soared in popularity over the years. Employing a total staff of just fewer than 60, this company knows how to deliver on every level! Catering for 45 weddings between September and April is a normal season for them, and whilst there is a lot

of volume involved, you would never know it if you attended one of their weddings. Each and every one of them feels unique and carefully planned. It’s all about the art of using finer touches to transform great food into an amazing meal. Trish says “We want to make your day stress-free and as happy as possible. Just the way it should be. I don’t consider it work. It’s such good fun!”And it’s easy to see why they are so good, and why brides and grooms literally flock to them. The food is to die for; whether it’s a buffet, a sit down a la carte meal, a cocktail reception or a BBQ, the scrumptious menu is always impressive. Trish prides herself on what they do and how they do it. “We put a big focus on food and we know how important it is. We get a lot of brides and grooms that come to us with stories of weddings they have been to, and recount the things they didn’t like. Whether it’s not enough nibbles or too long a wait for the meal, we always reassure them not to worry and that we won’t have anybody saying anything about their wedding other than how amazing it was”. And it’s true – Trish has never had a complaint about a wedding she has done, and proudly says “I would die if I did!” And it’s exactly that level of dedication and integrity that makes Simply Food a stand-out.

Weddings are a big deal. And there’s so much that goes into just one day. For the bride and groom there are millions of things to consider. For the guests, however, it’s a lot simpler. The first focus is the dress –

everyone wants to see what the bride looks like. Once the service is over, the attention shifts to the food. In a big way! When people talk about a wedding, the stories always focus on what the bride wore and how good the food was. And that’s where Simply Food know that it’s up to them to impress. “While the bridal party is having their photos taken, we are very much the show. It’s crucial we bring out enough cocktails, drinks and tons of nibbles to keep everyone happy.”

It’s evident that Trish loves what she does, and it flows on to those she deals with. She isn’t one to get stressed, on the contrary – Trish is patient, understanding and always aims to exceed the expectations of the brides and grooms she works with. She will guide a couple through the entire process leading up to the big day, as well as when it counts most – on the wedding day itself. “We rock and roll with the punches without compromising the day. If a bridal party is running late, we adjust the meal times to make sure the food comes out at the right time, regardless of when that might be.”

When you meet Trish you can’t help but instantly like her, and perhaps that’s a big part of why she’s so successful. She catered for my wedding 6 years ago, yet she remembers my son’s name, and greets me like a long lost friend. Take it from me, if Simply Food caters for your wedding, you will be one very lucky bride!

NOT EVEN A MASSIVE SWARM OF SAND FLIES FLYING UP HER GORGEOUS GOWN JUST AS SHE WAS ABOUT TO WALK DOWN THE AISLE COULD WIPE THE SMILE OFF HAYLEY’S FACE, FOR SHE WAS MARRYING HER LONG TIME SWEETHEART ON THIS VERY SPECIAL DAY.

Fate sent this couple a mild summer’s day, which was the ideal ambience for what was to become a splendid scene. Set in the 14 acres of farmland that make up Brackenridge Country Retreat in Martinborough, Hayley and Clinton’s day was idyllic from start to finish. The couple count their blessings they picked this venue, as everything fell into place from there. They explain “The venue was just gorgeous, with a lawn area for an outside ceremony, a great place for the reception, and cute cottage accommodation for all our guests, simply a perfect package.” Hayley and Clinton were impressed Brackenridge took care of all the setting up and clean-up, and offered a full staffed service with onsite catering. The all-in-one package and scenic location was a huge draw-card and Cathie Morrison Brackenridge’s cherry on top! “Cathie was fantastic to deal with, and took care of everything, so we were able to relax and not stress about planning everything ourselves. Cathie made the ceremony and reception all we could have imagined. We gave her our ideas, and she made them a reality. Her and her staff allowed us to get on and enjoy our day without having a single worry. They really did go over and above our expectations!”

It was very important to Hayley and Clinton to make the day special without seeming overly formal. They hit the nail on the head with famous Wellington band Uncle Monkey performing to an impressed and happy bevy of guests, who were only too happy to unwind and let loose on the

dance-floor. There was plenty of fun and laughter to be had throughout the day and night, with an impromptu cricket game even breaking out during the photos.

Penny from Inspire Photography is someone the bride is also very grateful to. “Penny was an amazing help, as she didn’t just take photos, but choreographed us through the day by providing a minute by minute schedule starting from when we woke up on our wedding morning. She thought of all the little things you wouldn’t think of unless you’d been there and done it before, and the day wouldn’t have run as smoothly as it did without her.” Penny even lent the bride her sandals so she could pose for photos in the field in greater comfort.

The bride looked ravishing in her CC Wards dress, and mainstay on the wedding circuit Frank Casey, once again saw to it that the boys looked handsome. Just Jaguar Hire provided the beautiful cars and the lovely flowers came from popular local florist Treetop Flowers.

This busy professional couple have hectic daily lives with each managing their own business, and puppies Ben and Alfie being the focus of loving attention and time at home. So it was an extra special treat for Hayley to discover that Clinton had put a lot of thought and effort into secretly planning their honeymoon. Clinton had orchestrated it, so that all was revealed during the speech of one of Hayely’s bridesmaids on the wedding day. Hayley’s genuine surprise and excitement was plain to see for all her friends and family. Hayley exclaims “Clinton surprised me with a honeymoon in Queenstown, staying at the Hilton Hotel right on the lake front. It was gorgeous! I had no idea at all that he had planned something so special.”

Looks like there’s plenty more surprises and joyful moments in store for this couple, who met a decade ago working in a bar on Courtenay Place. Their journey has brought them far already, and the rest of their lives is only just beginning.

“WE MET WHEN WE WERE TEENAGERS – I WAS 14 AND TIM WAS 15 YEARS OLD. I GREW UP IN PALMERSTON NORTH AND TIM LIVED IN WELLINGTON. WE BELONGED TO OUR LOCAL CHINESE ASSOCIATIONS, AND THROUGH THE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENTS AND DANCES THE PALMY GIRL MET THE WELLINGTON BOY. WE USED TO SPEND HOURS TALKING ON THE PHONE AND WRITING LETTERS TO EACH OTHER.”

And so began the story that would eventually see Lauren and Tim end up as husband and wife. Initially the very young couple grew apart, but years later through the modern powers of Facebook, Tim was able to reconnect with his first love. Even after many years, it was as if they had never been apart. “He still looked the same, still wore baggy jeans and still listened to the same music” says Lauren.

When it came time to plan the wedding this couple not only knew what they wanted, but who to use in order to make sure they got it. Enlisting the services of our very own Paula Bevege, Lauren and Tim were on the right track for a wonderful and stylish affair.

The couple elected to hold their entire wedding at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa (Te Papa), with the ceremony outside in the Amphitheatre and the reception taking place in the Main Foyer of Te Papa. A venue that could accommodate the exchanging of vows as well as the party after was something that was important to Lauren and Tim. They also liked the idea of an outside ceremony, and Te Papa was able to deliver on all fronts. And lucky for Lauren and Tim, the weather played along too, gifting them with a glorious Wellington day! “We chose Te Papa as it is an iconic venue that no one else we knew had used before. We appreciate the architecture and the aesthetics, and it all went with our vision. And importantly, Te Papa was able to hold the large amount of guests we had!” As the lovely couple exchanged their vows and said “I do” outside on a beautiful Wellington day, in addition to their 180 guests, some last minute straggling tourists exiting Te Papa were seen observing the nuptials, taking photos and clapping for the newlywed pair.

It was of great significance to Lauren and Tim to be able to incorporate their Chinese backgrounds into the wedding. Important cultural elements were a big consideration for the couple throughout the entire planning process, and this included being mindful of superstitions. They were successful with their mission and achieved it with many clever touches, including selecting an auspicious Chinese date according to the lunar calendar, choosing specific numbers of flowers for the centrepieces, representing the “double happiness” symbol on invitations, having a hair-combing ceremony the night before the wedding, and holding a Chinese wedding tea ceremony.

Another factor that makes this wedding unique was that Lauren and Tim opted to have their formal bridal party photos taken before the wedding itself. Becoming increasingly popular, but still a foreign concept to some, this included a “first look” ceremony where the couple are photographed laying eyes on each other for the first time. Helena Sofia Photography took care of the images, and the results are suitably stunning. Lauren actually pinpoints this part of the day as one of her most precious memories; “My special moment was our “first look” which Helena staged in the Wellington Botanical Gardens. I was so nervous, but when Tim turned around to see me in my dress for the first time, my nerves went away and the feeling was indescribable.” Choosing to have the photos earlier as well as sharing a private moment together before joining their guests made the couple feel more relaxed during the ceremony and the celebrations.

Being a well-organised person by nature, Lauren found having a vision for her wedding helped steer her in the right direction. Perusing various wedding blogs and magazines helped her gain ideas and inspiration. She even started a wedding scrapbook which showed what she liked – dresses, theming, flowers, hair, makeup, cakes and centrepieces. “This was really helpful when I went to see the different vendors, as they could see

my ideas for our wedding firsthand. It clearly showed them what I liked and they could design the dress, the theming and cake and flowers using that.”

The planning process was a long and thorough one, and Lauren’s mum and mother in law were invaluable in assisting the bride. “This even included a trip to Hong Kong with a list of wedding jobs, shopping, lots of good food and some mother and mother-in-law bonding!”

However there was someone else. “The other person who I couldn’t have done this without was Paula Bevege. She was able to see my vision and help us deliver it into reality. She was approachable and gave great advice and experience. Paula undertook the planning and logistics of our day, which meant I was a relaxed and stress-free bride the week leading up to the wedding – which surprised everyone! Paula took care of everything on the day from the theming, the ceremony, the order of reception – and as a result my mind was at ease and I could just enjoy my day! She even had the tissues ready when I needed them! “

And finally the wedding service itself was another highlight for the couple. The celebrant, Vicki Ellison made a huge impact on the couple. “She gave us “homework” and we had to complete a questionnaire about our “love story”, what we love/value about one another, what our interests are, the differences we have and our expectations… Tim wrote 8 pages and I wrote 5 pages!” Vicki then created the ceremony and vows based on Lauren and Tim’s answers. The ceremony was therefore very personal and the guests who may not have known Lauren and Tim’s love story learnt it at the wedding. This formed a very touching and special part of this very exciting and heartfelt day. And there was plenty of good cheer too, with the couple reporting many tears of joy and laughter. May these sentiments guide Lauren and Tim into their future. As the traditional Chinese blessing goes... “Wishing you one hundred years of good companionship.”

WHEN EMMA WALKED DOWN THE AISLE, EVERYONE WAS AWESTRUCK. HOW DO I KNOW? I WAS THERE. FOR EMMA WAS NOT ONLY AN UNBELIEVABLY STUNNING BRIDE, SHE IS ALSO MY FRIEND. AND IT WAS BOTH MY HONOUR AND PLEASURE TO BE THERE ON THE DAY SHE AND PAUL BECAME HUSBAND AND WIFE.

Emma and Paul’s wedding day was polished from start to finish. Despite a few gloomy clouds threatening Wellington with some undesirable weather early on, the end result was a mild day with just enough wind to move the bride’s dress for the photos and create a whimsical ambience. Emma looked beautiful in her Karen Willis Holmes gown, and Paul cut a very dapper figure in his Farry’s suit. During his speech the proud groom later said “Emma looks like an angel in her heavenly dress”, and the description was very apt. Emma’s mum, who has exquisite taste just like her daughter, had helped pick out the unique and extremely pretty gown. Both mother and daughter describe this as a particularly special moment during the preparations.

Paul and Emma’s story began long ago during their school years, but they reconnected across a crowded room at St John’s bar one balmy Wellington night. Their eyes locked, and the rest, as they say, is history.

It has been absolutely magical to watch the romance of Paul and Emma unfold over the years. Having shared many a dinner and nights out with both of them, it was plain to see right from the start how much in love they were. Paul has always treated Emma like a princess and shows her enormous respect and love. And with Paul’s cheeky sense of humour, Emma has never been so happy and joyful. Eagerly awaiting the proposal we all spurred him on, and finally on the third try Paul was able to execute his plan. The first two brave attempts were foiled due to bad weather and illness.

Once it was official, the planning began. And let me tell you, that is indeed Emma’s forte. Always the perfectionist, Emma’s approach was calm, highly

organised and methodical, and it certainly paid off. The wedding day was elegant, sophisticated and an all-round success! Paul was involved in all decisions, and together as a team they managed to plan their dream wedding. What advice can they share with other couples? “The things that helped us were talking to other brides and grooms, having an amazing caterer, reading magazines especially the checklists at the back to make sure you’re on track, and being organised well in advance, rather than leaving it to the last minute. We also kept a detailed budget, and therefore knew what we needed to save, so there was no big stress when it came to paying for things.”

Whilst every detail was considered, a big focus for Paul and Emma – a social couple by nature – was to serve delicious food, fine NZ wine and craft beer. And their wish was certainly fulfilled. They share; “We couldn’t have asked for anything more in our caterers, Simply Food. They were superb and ensured the day was a success. The guests are still talking about the food, and many nursed hangovers the next day!” As a wedding guest, I can personally verify that the meals were sensational. The abundance of hors d’oeuvres prior to dinner, the mouth-watering a-la-carte meal served to our tables, the divine dessert tasting platter – it was all a true decadent indulgence.

The reception was held at Wellington’s famed Boatshed. Emma and Paul just couldn’t go past this fantastic venue. “We looked at lots of different places, but The Boatshed was our absolute favourite. It’s a stunning venue with gorgeous views towards the city and out to sea, and centrally located.” And on the 10th of February 2012 it was home to many happy, merry guests dancing and drinking to their hearts’ content until the very wee hours of the next morning.

Flowers Manuela provided the gorgeous bouquets on the day, and Rachael Brown captured every fine detail with her lens. The photographs are beautiful, and very accurately portray the great fun, heartfelt love and divine elegance this tasteful wedding day entailed. Every detail was thought of, everything was carefully planned and nothing went wrong. So it’s no wonder Emma and Paul say that there is nothing they would change if they could relive it all again; “There really is not a lot we would do differently – it was a beautiful day and we have some amazing memories from it.” Emma adds; “It was such a surreal and special moment seeing each other for the first time as I walked into the church.” And that, ladies and gentlemen, was how we all felt when the sun went down and we watched as the couple took to the dance floor as husband and wife. You just wouldn’t change a thing.

THE WEATHER GODS SURE HAD A FEW TRICKS UP THEIR SLEEVES WHEN IT CAME TO VANESSA AND SAM’S WEDDING, BUT ALL’S WELL THAT ENDS WELL. AND END WELL IT CERTAINLY DID! FOR THE AMAZING PREPARATIONS UNDERTAKEN TO THE UTMOST STANDARD AND HIGHEST TASTE CREATED A WEDDING UNLIKE ANY OTHER – REGARDLESS OF ANY OBSTACLE THAT STOOD IN THE WAY.

Sam and Vanessa weren’t altogether thrilled about the weather bomb warnings on the front page of the newspaper just days out from their special day. All set for a fabulous outdoor wedding at Sam’s parents’ property by the Okere Falls at Lake Rotoiti, meant this couple and their amazing families pulled out all the stops to make it go ahead – rain or shine. As the bride’s father-in-law famously said “We will prepare for the worst and hope for the best.” And in this case that hope was certainly rewarded, as an amazing day was had by all. And in a stroke of luck or perhaps even a small miracle, the weather bomb chose to by-pass this particular lovers’ oasis.

Opting to get married at Sam’s parents’ property was extremely meaningful to the couple. Despite being the fourth son to get married, Sam was the first of the five boys to tie the knot there. Vanessa shares “It’s a very special place to Sam, and he had always wanted to have his wedding there. And of course it’s now a very special place for me too.” Years earlier, Sam’s mother had planted her stunning garden in a way so a particular part was circular, in the hope that one day her children would have their weddings there. “And we weren’t going to let the weather take that away from us!” shares Vanessa happily.

In terms of planning the wedding, Vanessa had a clear idea regarding the themes and colour co-ordination she wanted, and her vision together

with the help of some talented professionals led to perfect flowers and marquee decorations; “I absolutely loved the finished effect and it looked more beautiful than I could have hoped!” The magnificent flowers were proudly created by Katie Bevege and Fenella Playne. The couple also share that the internet was a good tool for them when selecting who to use on their special day; “We felt it was really important to research the right caterer, photographer and band to get the best fit for us, and we are so happy with the choices we made, as they were all outstanding.”

The bride looked elegant in her custom designed Robyn Cliffe Couturiére gown, and the groom and the groomsmen did not let the side down in handsome Brides on Thorndon suits. Vanessa opted to fly her beauty team in with her, and this proved to be the right move, for she was glowing and styled to perfection. The famous Thao from Trois on Allen had the honour of doing Vanessa’s hair for the big day, and Rebecca Connor was in charge of the amazing make-up. The results speak for themselves – perfection!

Vanessa and Sam are a couple who have shared many amazing moments during their 6 year romance, including a dreamy marriage proposal in Florence, Italy at the end of a 2 month European vacation.

Yet the 3rd of March 2012 will go down in history as the most magical and special day this couple has experienced together. Many little yet meaningful touches, such as Vanessa’s great-grandmother’s diamond bracelet from Czechoslovakia being sent to her as a special wedding gift (something “old” and precious for the bride to treasure!), rendered this day unforgettable. Vanessa explains; “It was such an emotional moment when I received the bracelet, I was totally overwhelmed and it was so special to wear because not only is it absolutely stunning, it carries so much sentimental value as well.” Moreover, both sides of the family were involved in the planning and supportive throughout, which Vanessa and Sam appreciated very much. The couple felt extremely lucky to have not only a fabulous wedding day, but a whole week of wedding celebrations and joy; “We had friends and family fly in from the United Kingdom, France, Australia and Holland, which meant we had the days leading up to the wedding to enjoy as well. Sunday was also glorious and spent playing petanque and tennis and BBQing in the sun.”

Vanessa and Sam have many plans and plenty to look forward to, the first being a romantic honeymoon in Croatia and Turkey in June. And if their past track record is anything to go by, everything will turn out roses, no matter what the weather!

The essence of beauty and spirit for men and women

AS A BRIDE AND GROOM YOU SPEND MONTHS PREPARING FOR YOUR DREAM DAY. GATHERING YOUR ‘A TEAM’ FOR STYLING AND BEAUTY PREPARATION IS PARAMOUNT.

PRE WEDDING PREP: Make time for a consultation with your beauty therapist at least 3 months before the big day and together make a plan for a treatment programme that will achieve beautiful glowing skin top to toe. Book a meeting with your stylist to set a goal for your wedding day. Achieving the best colour result and having a conditioning hair treatment regime is essential.

HAIRKeep it simple, beautiful and soft. If you don’t wear your hair up or have never had a fringe before, your wedding day is not the time to try having one.

MAKE UPA natural look is the choice for most brides.Your make up really does need to be strong and have enough coverage to photograph beautifully.

BEAUTYChat with your therapist and spend your money on what’s most important to you. Whether it’s body exfoliation, wrap treatments, microdermabrasion facials, or more relaxing spa sessions such as massage, half or full day spa packages for the bride, groom and their bridal party, the range and combinations of treatments are endless.

MANKINDDon’t forget the other most important person, take him with you to the spa or better still, book him in as a surprise. A bro-dry is another good idea for your groom on the wedding day.

ESSENTIALSLooking after those hands and feet with manicures and pedicures are essential. .

Don’t forget the waxing, another of those finer points easily forgotten.

DIYIt is most important to follow up at home with good professional products, continuing with your ‘at home regime’. It’s no good spending time and money on treatments and advice if you don’t follow through at home.

FAMOUS FACESOn the journey leading up to your big day keep in mind those images that have inspired you along the way. These may have been those of famous faces or your very own signature style.

SWEET MOMENTS AND HAPPY COINCIDENCES HAVE ALL BEEN PART OF YASMIN AND TIM’S BEAUTIFUL ROMANCE. THE STUNNING YOUNG COUPLE MET DURING THEIR UNIVERSITY YEARS IN 2009. TIM’S FLATMATE WAS MOVING OUT AND HAD ADVERTISED HIS ROOM FOR RENT. WHEN YASMIN RESPONDED TO THE AD, LITTLE DID SHE KNOW THAT HER FUTURE HUSBAND WAS PART OF THE LIVING ARRANGEMENT. YASMIN SHARES “ONE THING LED TO ANOTHER AND I EVENTUALLY GOT THE ‘UPGRADE’ FROM FLATMATE TO GIRLFRIEND. THERE ARE STILL MANY JOKES ABOUT HOW I FOUND MY HUSBAND ON TRADE ME!”

The story of their proposal is similarly charming. The number 8 is Yasmin’s favourite, and so a brave Tim picked the 8th of the 8th to pop the question. Tim had prepared Yasmin’s favourite breakfast, and together they were taking in a stunning ocean view in their car. Yasmin excitedly explains “Suddenly I noticed, Tim had hopped out of the car and was getting something out of the boot. The next thing I knew, he was beside the car next to me on one knee in the pouring rain, with a bunch of 8 beautiful red roses! The next words that came out of his mouth were “Ik hou heel veel van jou mij lieveling, wil je met mij trouwen?” I am Dutch and in Dutch this means: I love you very much my darling, will you marry me?” Tim later showed Yasmin the dramatic Dragonball-Z-looking, Dutch YouTube clip he had been watching in the wee hours of the morning trying to get his pronunciation right. Naturally, the ecstatic Yasmin replied in Dutch – with a big “Ja!”

Captivated by the beauty of the wooden floors, high ceilings, natural light and amazing acoustics, the happily betrothed couple chose St Andrew’s on the Terrace as the place where they would exchange vows. Yasmin had wanted helium balloons pinned to the end of every row down the aisle. The balloons, helium, pins and ribbon had all been purchased prior, so the rest appeared pretty simple. However on the day, several of the blown-up balloons were accidentally sent flying inside the church and the rest seemed too small and heavy for the ribbon. This gave way to a last minute helium balloon emergency and with only half an hour to spare! However

help arrived in the form of a wonderful friend, the marriage celebrant’s wife and Hiremaster – who provided fantastic replacements in the nick of time! By the time Yasmin arrived at the church, only slightly after 3pm, everything was back to perfect.

Foxglove was Tim and Yasmin’s chosen venue to celebrate with their guests, and they were thrilled that catering, table seating and cleaning were all part of the deal. “This took away a lot of the pre-wedding stress. In fact this was the most helpful thing about our wedding, having Foxglove take care of so many things for us.”

Yasmin and Tim designed a wonderful wedding, which was a true reflection of their happy, uncomplicated young love; “The most important thing during the planning was not to get stressed out. We knew this wasn’t going to be easy, but it was important for us to remember why we were doing it, and that it was an incredibly happy occasion we weren’t going to experience again. We wanted to enjoy this very special time.” And enjoy they did! Yasmin goes on “I think the most special moment was standing in front of our family and friends, looking into Tim’s eyes and saying our vows. Saying that, and then rocking around after the ceremony as husband and wife was a really amazing feeling.”

The photos, shot by Mel Waite, document a couple very happy with their special day. In fact so pleased were Yasmin and Tim, that they are adamant there is absolutely nothing they would change about the wedding at all. “It was the best day ever!”

To top it all off, Tim organised a surprise honeymoon in the Coromandel for his beautiful bride. Yasmin fell in love with the destination, and the couple were very fortunate to have incredible weather for the duration of their trip. Yasmin says “I said to Tim frequently that I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else in the world.”

Yasmin and Tim have many things they want to do with their lives, including Yasmin finishing her acupuncture degree, travelling the world together, settling in NZ, possibly starting a business together (physiotherapy + acupuncture)... and “eventually making some babies!!”

Perhaps famous Dutch Painter Vincent Van Gogh’s apt advice can guide this lovely couple along the way into the future “Love many things, for therein lies the true strength, and whosoever loves much performs much, and can accomplish much, and what is done in love is done well.”
