On August 13-16, 2019, MDH participated in training held in our auditorium for a non-violent crisis intervention program. Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) taught four MDH employees and two from outside MDH to be instructors for their program. Those from MDH: Paula Duncan, Laci Zurek, Lois Kissinger, and Jessica Prather.

Since 1980, over 10 million professionals have participated in CPI’s Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training program. The course focuses on a range of prevention strategies, de-escalation skills, and communication skills. Some MDH employees will be completing this education online. Those that will require the additional physical intervention skills will be participating in classroom education as well.

CPI training for MDH employees will be held monthly. Secure trained staff will be required to take CPI within one year of completion of their last Secure course. Contact Staff Development for any questions.

A+ AchievementCasey Wilcox graduated from the Surgical First Assistant Program at Meridian Institute of Surgical Assisting on July 31. The program contained three phases. Phase 1 was a year of 13 core classes related to surgery, the operating room, and assisting in surgery. Phase 2 was on-site training in Nashville, Tennessee, for Applied Science Lab. This included 60 hours of training over a five day period where students complete course work and perform surgical procedures on anesthetized pigs. During Phase 3, Casey was responsible for providing documentation of assisting in 140 surgical cases with a board certified MD or DO at MDH. Following graduation, Casey took the certification exam through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) and is now a Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA). Congratulations on this accomplishment, Casey!

Thank YouI recently had left total knee replacement in Springfield because of my rare blood clotting disease. The doctor ordered home health the first two weeks. MDH Home Health Care is excellent. Susan Briggs came daily for blood work, and her IV skills are excellent-my veins appreciated that! Home Health Physical Therapy set up an exercise program I could do until I was able to start physical therapy at the hospital. I can’t say enough about Alicia and the anti-coagulation clinic, she spent hours coordinating with Springfield, doing research, and starting a plan weeks before surgery. Thank you to Dick, Scarlett, and Patty who always offered to park the car and take me to PT even if I said, “I have to do this myself to get better”. Lawrence has been my main therapist but they are all amazing. I also don’t want to forget Lab, they have been drawing my blood for years and they are always so good. Lori always welcomes me with a smile.

Lastly, I want to thank my coworkers for covering my time off with extra call, etc. A shout out to Kim Williams, Linda Dixon, and Judy McKee who came by my home to check on me. I am blessed to work at MDH and to have received great care from every department.

Thank you,Marty Frier
