NEWS FROM THE VESTRY

The vestry met on Sunday afternoon, February 16, 2014. The first order of business was to amend the bylaws to allow the membership of the vestry to be increased to 12 for the coming year due to the search for a new rector and an effort to maintain some consistency. The amendment, written by Mr. Bill Thomas was accepted unanimously. Mr. Bin Trice, Dr. Gus Lewis and Eugene Rivara will remain on the vestry and they are joined by newly elected mem-bers, Mrs. Julie Brown, Mrs. Rose Mary Zellner and Mr. David Mann. They serve with Mrs. Lindeve Hostvedt, Mrs. Poohdie Miller, Mrs. Linda Minor, Dr. John Haile, Mr. Jerry Walker and Mr. David Sutton.

Elections were held and Mr. Howard Schmidt was re-reelected treasurer, Dr. Lewis was reelected register with Mrs. Julie Brown chosen to be the alternate. Mr. Jerry Walker is our new junior warden and our new senior warden is Mrs. Lindeve Hostvedt. Congratulations to all.

CHURCH SIGN

If you haven’t been by the church in a while, on Saturday, January 25, the new church sign was installed. A big thank you has to be extended to Dr. John Haile for introducing, managing and completing (physically) this project. Thank you Dr.

Haile and the vestry.

...and there was light The lighting project has moved along fast in the last weeks. All the fixtures have been installed. We are exploring our options for the light bulbs and dim-mers but we will have light for the Ash Wednesday evening service. So come out and begin your Lenten journey with the first evening service with the newly installed lights. A big thank you to the vestry, the lighting subcommittee and all the members of St. Paul’s who have made very generous donations to this project.

CAMP 2014...God’s work through our hands We at St. Paul's Millers Tavern have always had a special appreciation for the work done at

Shrine Mont Camps. Through your generous donations and pur-chase of Brunswick stew, and many other special projects outside of the parish family, we keep a healthy fund with which to send many of our own kids and those in the community to camps over the years. They always have been profoundly affected by the experiences, have made fast friends that they keep through the years, and have found their way in their faith and learned to spread the Word throughout the world. That is a wonderful thing when many other destructive forces pull at our children daily. As it is time to get camp registra-tions in (some camps fill up fast), we thought it important to talk about how scholarship works through the Millie Trice Campership Fund. A registration of $75 is required and is the responsibility of the camper and/or his family. Once all registrations are accepted, we tabulate the remaining costs of each camper (these costs vary de-pendent on camp, some camps are as little as a few days to three weeks, depending on the age of participants and type of camp) and evaluate if scholarship can be made for the rest of the expense or on-

ly part of it. We reach out to the community each year to find other children to fund this experi-ence for as well. We open this opportunity to extended members of our church family also. We luckily have been able to scholarship all costs of camps for our children for many years, and through your help, we will continue to do so. It was gratifying to hear a young first-time camper (who was not raised in the church and was a bit reticent about going to camp), tell her grand-mother that she had a grand time, can't wait to go back and is now an Episcopalian! God's work through our hands!

Stop, look and listen

Lent, the season of the church year that’s associated with repentance, begins on Ash Wednesday

(March 5 this year). While some people deny them-

selves by giving up something for Lent, others prepare

for Easter through special Bible studies or devotions.

Christians observe Lent for these reasons:

It causes us to STOP. Lent says, “Stop and rest

awhile,” as well as “Stop doing wrong.”

It tells us to LOOK. Look inward for an honest

self-examination. Look upward to see the cross of

Christ offering healing and love. Look forward to

the hope of the Resurrection.

It tells us to LISTEN. Listen to the words of

Christ. Listen to the voice of God. Listen to the

winds of the Spirit of God.

Stop, look and listen. These three words aren’t only important for our safety in travel; they’re also

helpful for our journey through the 40 days of Lent.

ST. PAUL’S OUTREACH

Get Involved!

St. Paul’s supports several local efforts to help needy people in our community. Most obviously, we bring canned food to sup-port the CornerStone CDC, which distributes food from the USDA and other programs. Our canned food is distributed monthly on the third Saturday of each month. An effort is made to have each of roughly 200 bags contain approximately the same things, which is why specific items are requested each month. The March request is for canned meats, beans, and soups. Since the third Saturday of March is the 15th, please bring canned meats, beans and soups through the second Sunday, which is the 9th. After that, begin bringing cans for April’s distribution of fish, vegetables and beans. At least one Sunday in February, the St. Paul’s food basket was completely empty of contributions. Please don’t forget this im-portant ministry!

Do YOU have a Saturday morning that you could help distribute food? Call 769-2996, send an E-mail to in-fo@CornerStoneAylett.org or ask Sally Acree, who volunteers almost every week. They need more help!

They also need paper bags. While the plas-tic ones are helpful, those are usually used to pack meat and vegetables, which then go into the paper bags. Vol-unteers stand up about 200 paper ones and begin packing them early with boxed goods pur-chased from the cen-tral food bank, our canned goods and whatever about-to-expire donations have come from the grocery stores on distribution days. The plastic ones just don’t stand up very well. So, ask for paper bags at the grocery store, fold them up when you get them home, and take them by the CornerStone or put them in the St. Paul’s food basket.

Essex Churches Together meets on the fourth Tuesday night of each month at the Essex County Library at 7 pm. St. Paul’s could use a representative. The scheduled topic for January’s

meeting, which was cancelled due to inclement weather, as was most of the rest of January, was homelessness is Essex County. Didn’t know that was a problem? Want to find out more about similar issues? Be our church contact!

Have an idea about a local outreach project? There are grants available from the Diocese. We’ve missed this year’s deadline, but we can put together an application for next year. Make a plan or ask for help with things you are passionate about.

Want to support Dr. Lewis’s medical mission to the Dominican Republic this summer? They can always use more funds for

medical supplies. Send contributions to the Dominican Aid Society of Virginia, 1924 Floyd Ave., Richmond, Va. 23220.

The CornerStone Health Clinic and food pro-gram could use financial support, as well. St. Paul’s Outreach Committee donates regu-larly to them, so if you write a check to St. Paul’s memo’d to Health Clinic, Food Bank, or (in March) Dominican Aid Society, we can add your funds to those already being donat-ed.

12, 2014. A box has been placed at St.

Paul's and at the Essex Museum for old,

torn and weathered United States flags.

Would you like to be included on our service schedule as either a READER/

LECTOR, ACOLYTE , or LAY EUCHARISTIC MINISTER? Those who partic-

ipate in these valuable ministries, find it to be a fulfilling way to be included in the

service. Readers are sent the readings a few days before to become familiar with the

passages. There is a bit more involved to become a Lay Eucharistic Minister, but cer-

tainly within anyone's grasp. The most obvious need with only 3 young people (with

Meredith Barlow filling in) is to fill the Acolyte schedule. There is no reason this job

need be done by just our youth, so please consider placing yourself on the 'list'.
