Guess and Check

“Does this look right?”

“Could this be a reasonable answer?”

Find two numbers that add up to 25.

15 + 5 = 20

13 + 9 = 24

20 + 5 = 25

Circle Important Words

“What words give me information on what I’m supposed to do?”

“What formula should I use to solve?”

Jaden had 55 marbles. His

brother gave him 12 more. How many

marbles does he have

altogether?

I know the words more, how many,

and altogether tell me I should add!

Write a Number Sentence

“What operation could I use to solve this?”

“What formula should I use to solve?”

Joe had 35 mini erasers. He gave 12 away to his

friends. How many does he have left?

35 – 12 = 23

13

Break It Into Smaller Parts

“What is one way I can break this problem into smaller pieces?”

“What do I already know about this problem?”

Find 3 numbers that add up to 45.

I know that 40 + 5 = 45

I need one more number to get three numbers.

I can break 40 into two parts.

40 = 20 + 20 so,

20 + 20 + 4 = 45

Solve a Simpler Problem

“Can I change the numbers in the problem to make it easier?”

“Will this help me solve the problem easier?”

What fraction of the circle is gray?

I know that there are six pieces total.

I know that two of those are colored.

6 – 2 = 4

So, 4 out of 6 or Rare colored.

Estimate, Check, and Revise

“What is a reasonable answer for this problem?”

“What operation could I use to solve it?”

“After I have come up with an estimate, I can check my answer to see if it’s correct. If it’s not, I can use what I know and try again!”

412 + 213 = ?

I know that 412 is almost 400 and 213 is

almost 200.

So, 412 + 213 is about 600.

I’ll add them up and check my

work!

Use Tools, Models, or

Manipulatives“Can I use paper, blocks, or tools to help me

solve the problem?”

“What picture can I draw to help me solve the problem?”

Sofía had 98 nickels. She used some of her nickels to buy a drink. She

found 15 more nickels in her backpack. Now she has 54. How

many nickels did she use to buy the drink?

54 – 15 = 39

98 – 39 = 59

She used 59 nickels to buy her drink.
