“Last Chance” Take advantage of it

You have been placed here for a reason

You have a choice Ottumwa High School cares

about you, they refuse to let you fail

You will meet at The Gateway Building and go to room 104. There is a bus that leaves from the High School at 8, it is bus #43, but at this time you will need to find your own ride home. This class will follow the school district calendar and closing policy. The outside doors are always locked; someone will be at the door between 8:00 and 8:15 to let you in. If you are late you will have to wait outside until I hear you knock, please don’t ring the bell. Once in the room you are NOT allowed to leave the room without permission. Lunch will be brought to the door and when it is lunch time you will get your sack lunch. You will eat in the room, please pick up after yourself. The bathroom is in the room and you must use this bathroom. If at any time you leave the classroom without permission you will be considered AWOL (absent without leave), and the discipline step policy will be followed accordingly. At 11:30 Mr. Stout will come in and continue class for me, he has as much authority as I do and will follow the discipline policy I have set in place. Toby Mitchell (Truancy Police Officer) will be around several times during the day and is always a phone call away.

Be on time- Class starts at 8:15- You are only allowed to be late once, after that you will lose your points for the day. (this will be explained later in the powerpoint)

The following is a general description of discipline procedures to be used in the continuation room during the 2011-2012 school year.

It should be understood by students and parents that students are placed in the continuation room after repeated disciplinary infractions and that the continuation room is a “last chance” for the student to remain in the Ottumwa School District.

Students in the continuation room are expected to follow all rules and regulations as explained by the teacher. Failure to comply with the teacher’s instructions will result in the following steps:

1st offense If at any time you do not follow a

reasonable request you will be given one verbal reprimand, and you will lose 5/10 Plato points.

A list of prohibited acts is listed in your student agenda page 38

2nd offense or you refuse to comply with the first request you will lose all your Plato points for the day. 0/10

3rd offense you will lose all your Plato points for the next 5 days 0/50

4th offense loss of all Plato Points for the next 10 days 0/100 and out of school suspended pending a parent conference with Mr. Crane and an administrator.

5th offense The student will be suspended out of school pending a parent conference at which time an alternative placement or expulsion will be determined.

Actions by any student which are considered particularly serious or dangerous may lead directly to step five.

If you finish a class in 10 school days then I look back at how many points you earned/lost each day. 10 School days = 100 points Lets say you lost 30 points in those 10 days: I now take the percentage of those lost points

and apply them to your Plato grade. For example: 100-30=70… 70/100= 70% If you finish a class in two days then your grade

would be out of 20 points. For example if you lost 5 points in those two days… 20-5=15/20=75%

You are not allowed to leave the classroom at anytime during the day unless given permission.

If you need to have a minute to yourself you can use the “time out” room to gather your thoughts.

If you do not show up for class I am required by law to call Toby Mitchell (Truancy Officer)

Mastery Tests 25% Post Tests 25% Semester Test 25% Blog Entries 05% Discipline 20% = Plato Points

You start with 10 points for the day, if you CHOOSE to not stay on task, argue with me, sleep, leave class, etc. you will lose your points. Discipline is a large deciding factor whether or not you receive a passing grade for credit.

This can also be a positive, lets say you don’t do so well on a test, if you earn all your discipline points that just might be enough to help you pass! You must receive 70% to earn credit.

I do care about all students, including you! If at anytime you want to just talk please come see me.

My goal for you is to earn as many credits as you can and earn your way back to the high school.

Originally from Illinois Head wrestling coach in Illinois and

assistant football coach I was involved in everything in High School I had trouble with school from 7th grade to

sophomore year. I had several teachers that helped me! I had to work very hard to get my grades up in order to go to

college to play football! I can’t say I have experienced what you have been through

every time, but I will try my best to help you through it using my past experiences.

I coach Football and Wrestling at OHS I ask that you give me a chance to help

you, just like you are getting one more chance by being placed in here.
