SALERSFRom thE ASSociAtionWelcome to 2015 and our booming beef business!

I would like to thank all the SAC directors, who are working on your behalf – Ray Depalme, Brad Dunn, Pete Watkins, David Wright and Jacob Morin. Long time director, Tammi McGee, and John Nikkel left the board last summer. Thanks to both for their enthusiasm and hard work.

The SAC office in Calgary is now staffed with our very capable registrar, Heidi Voegeli-Bleiker, who has been with SAC since June 2014. We also utilized the services of Rita Ricioppo, who keeps the financial records for the association.

Last year I was able to attend Salers bull sales in Alberta and of course our AGM in Saskatoon SK. The AGM was very well attended and was an enjoyable weekend for all. Attending Salers events such as annual meetings, bull sales and shows in Edmonton, Victoriaville, Sussex, Richmond and Denver, CO is a great way to meet and connect with other Sal-ers breeders. Thanks to all the Salers breeders who put in the effort to show cattle and attend these events.

The SAC board of directors have several projects, which we work on through the year including the Salers Magazine, specific advertising campaigns such as the Cattlemen’s Magazine and organizing the AGM. We are working on breed improvements like moving to SNP technology for DNA testing as well as working with our contracted EPD provider, ABRI. All these projects take volunteered time and effort from all your directors.

Cattle markets have never been better! Congrats to Salers breeders for hanging in through the tough years. You can now cash in on some great dividends from the livestock industry.

I hope to see all Salers breeders at our 2015 AGM being held June 27th –28th at Nisku AB.

Happy calving!

Gar Williams, President, Salers Association of Canada

Hello Everyone,

It is hard to believe that I’ve been working for your Association already since June, this means more than seven months. Thank you for all your support and patience! There was a lot and is still more to learn. I do appreciate if you contact me right away if there is an issue with anything. Thanks to the Board of Directors for calling in to make sure things are going well.

We’re off to a busy start with breeders participating in various events. As always, there are 4-H and junior members working with Salers projects across the country and will be taking them to various shows and achievement activities this spring.

Also, remember at show season to get your registrations in early in case a DNA issue should arise or any other unfore-seen problems should pop up. Remember my time in the office is shared with the Maine-Anjou Association and often both breeds attend the same shows and events.

Another year has passed since the Annual General Meeting held in Saskatoon. The 2015 AGM will be held in Nisku, Alberta, on June 27-28, 2015. Please plan to be there to mingle with fellow breeders and make this a huge success.

Hope you have had a wonderful year so far and have a good time at the AGM.

A fourth generation cattle operation in southern Alberta has found Salers cattle to be its crossbreeding produc-tion power. The Dangerfield family has been named the 2014 Commer-cial Breeders of the Year by the Sal-ers Association of Canada.

Steve Dangerfield’s parents, Nor-man and Daisy, moved to the farm just east of Enchant in 1952. It had been settled in the 1930’s by Daisy’s family, the Stevenson’s. Cattle have always been a key part of the opera-tion in the heart of irrigation country. “We had a Shorthorn Hereford cross to start, then we switched to a Salers cross about thirty years ago,” noted Dangerfield. “We liked the vigor they had calving. A friend, Ron Russell of Raymond, had them. (My daughter) Lisa used to help him show some cattle.”

As the Salers became integrated into the commercial herd, Dangerfield

saw their impact on the annual calf crop. “They had more vigor, more size. The cows have way more milk than a lot of the other breeds. They made us a little more money,” he smiled.

These days, the herd is predominant-ly Salers. Steve and Judy run around 140 head, while Lisa and her husband Lance Howg now have a herd of over 200 head nearby. Lance had been

around other cattle breeds, but a wedding gift of two Salers heifers from Steve launched the young cou-ple’s herd in the Salers direction. The Howgs also did custom calving of about 70 head for neighbor Dennis Orsten, and he wound up adding Sal-ers cows to his herd. As he’s retired, the Howgs have recently acquired his cattle. “So that means me and Dad fixed both you and Dennis,” joked Lisa to her husband, about convert-ing them to the Salers breed.

Dangerfield’s cattle herd, while Sal-ers based, also includes some red and black Angus, with a few going back to Hereford roots, and even one Longhorn! It’s a 2000 acre op-eration, with wheat, canola and oats in the grain rotation, as well as some hay, using five irrigation pivots. Calv-ing is in February, with calves sold off the cows in October on TEAM. Along with grass around home, he also puts 50 head in the Lonesome Lake Graz-ing Reserve. Howgs are patrons

in the Circle E Pasture. “The steers went to Ontario this year, and the heifers went last year,” commented Dangerfield. Their calves have gone to feedlot operator John Van Nistel-rooy for the past five years, also sold by TEAM.

“Lots of people ask why we go with Salers,” he related. “You just need to look at the production.” “You just have to look at the calves,” added Lance Howg. Lisa Howg chimed in as well, “They don’t have big birth-weights. They grow well after.” “You don’t have to baby them,” agreed Dangerfield. “They get up and get at it.” The hardiness of the young calves carries on, and is evident even during weaning, when they’re quick to adapt to feed. “The calves gain as good as the yearlings,” noted Howg. “Because of our earlier calving, with their calving ease and the way they do so well at the start, we’re better off. When you use the Salers bulls for calving ease, you’re not losing the weaning weight advantage.”

Howg’s put Salers bulls on their Red Angus cross cows, and start calving out in January. Dangerfield uses Red and Black Angus bulls with his Salers cross cows. They cite herd health and longevity of the cows as other positive attributes the Salers factor brings to their herds. Both families marvel at the current high market prices for cattle. “Unbe-lievable,” commented Dangerfield. “I’ve never seen that before, or so many smiles coming out of the auc-tion market!” It’s made ‘sticking with cows’ worth it, even through the lean times of the BSE market crash. For Lance and Lisa, it was a double whammy, because the region was hit with the trichomoniasis outbreak in bulls about the same time. But they still believed in the long range potential for beef production. “I went and bought all my heifer calves back from the guy who had them,” recalled Howg. “Just so I could keep my numbers up.”

As the Howgs carry on the family tra-dition in cattle, their sons Logan (10) and Landon (8) keep them busy in the community, with Landon espe-cially enjoying the stock. Steve Dan-gerfield is pleased to see their op-eration growing, while he begins to slow down a bit, as he had a knee re-placement this fall. “There’ll always be some cows around here,” smiled Judy, who’s been part of the farm for thirteen years. Along with what Sal-ers cattle have done for their herd, the Dangerfields have also enjoyed getting to know the breeders. In fact, they had a great chance to do that when Steve went along to a bull sale with Lance, and wound up hav-ing his name selected in the buyer’s draw for a trip to Mexico!

Steve Dangerfield never imagined being honored for his commitment to Salers cattle, so being named Com-mercial Breeder of the Year caught him off-guard. “It was a little surpris-ing,” he admitted. “But it means a lot.”

It has been quite some time since Canadian Salers have been exhibited at the National Western Stock Show. But this year the New Trend Sale consigners, Reg Baldwin, Mike and Tracy Hildebrand and Chance Leil of Spring Coulee, Pete Watkins of PW Stock Farm and Gerry and Cody Isley of GIT Perfor-mance Cattle, headed south with their show string to take in the Denver Show.

With the trailer loaded, Chance and Gerry left for Denver a couple of days ahead of the the rest of the crew, arriving Wednesday at the marshalling point, Adams County Fair Grounds less than an hour away from the NWSS. The cattle moved into Denver on Saturday, giving the Canadian Breed-ers a couple of days to become reacquainted with Salers Breeders from across the USA.

The next four days were spent at the National Western Stock Show grounds; Sunday the ASA banquet and NWSS Salers Bull Futurity. On Monday the National Salers Sale which av-eraged well over $6000.00. Tuesday the ASA National Salers, Optimizer and Junior Shows.

Hours were spent talking about the cattle, going over pedi-grees and anwering questions on Canadian genetics. PW Stock Farm’s red polled fullblood heifer attracted an enor-mous amount of attention and Mike Hildebrand and Gerry Isley’s bull calves were two of the highest performance bulls

Canadian Salers travel to the National Western Stock Show

in the Salers barn. Deals were made with American breed-ers for semen and GIT formed a partnership on a new herd sire. The hospitality shown the “Canadians “ was fantastic and they all are now looking forward to returning to the NWSS.

The road home was fun, telling stories with the excitement of having been to Denver. Stopping for the best fried chicken ever, filling gaps in the Chris Ledoux collection at Kaycee Wy-oming, enjoying the fantastic weather and great company.

You can meet up with these Salers breeders at the New Trend Sale in March. They would be happy to visit with you about their trip and encourage you to attend the NWSS next year in Denver.

Congratulations to the Butlers - Jim & Bev, Mike, Dale & Darlene and sons Cody, Dwight, & Marty and families of Croton in south western Ontario who have been named Salers Breeder of the Year!

The Butler farm was originally a mixed farm with cow-calves, farrow-to-finish hogs and crops. It evolved into more feedlot cattle for a while until poor returns had them rethink the cow-calf business. The hogs were phased out in the nineties. The farm now grows corn for silage and pasture for the cattle. Soybeans and winter wheat are grown as cash crops.

After some research into various breeds and their merits, they decided to try the Salers breed. In the spring of 1986 they at-tended an estate sale near Wingham where they purchased their first Salers heifer. They bred her through AI and went looking for more. In the fall of 1987, they bought 13 heifers from Robert Currie of Shelburne, ON. Then, at a consignment sale held in Lindsay ON, they were able to buy a single bred heifer from Bill Scott of Drumbo, ON and 3 heifer calves from Neil Metheral of Glen Huron, ON. That was the start of their Salers herd.

In the spring of 1988, they went looking for a Salers bull. They purchased a fullblood yearling bull from David Pease, Shelburne ON. The bull had been on test at the Mt. Forest Bull Test Station that year. Through

the use of this bull and many AI sires, the Butlers now have a herd of 120 females. They like to calve out the cows in the spring, wean calves in the fall and over win-ter them. Whichever ones are not retained within the herd or sold privately as breed-ing stock, are sent to Brussels Livestock and sold as stockers.

Dale began showing calves through 4-H and lead the local calf club for 25 years. He got interested in showing calves at steer shows and Dale and his three sons, Cody, Dwight and Marty were involved in 4-H shows locally. Dale, Jim and sons began showing at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto in 1997 and showed there until the Salers show was cancelled some 5 years later. However, the boys continued to show in the National Beef Heifer Show held annu-ally at the Royal Winter Fair while they were still in 4-H.

The 11 hour drive to Victoriaville, Quebec did not deter Dale and family from attend-ing the National Salers Show held at Expo Boeuf in 2004. They have been back there several times including the including the last three years. This year, Jim’s bull was Grand Champion Bull and Dale had the Re-serve Grand Champion Female.

Dale and his wife Darlene, who is a teacher, have spent many hours at local hockey are-nas and football fields as all three boys were involved in hockey and football. Their

boys, now grown, live fairly close by and continue to lend a hand on the farm when-ever possible. Cody, 26, and his wife Lisa live in Strathroy. They are both mechanical engineers. He works for Dupont in Corun-na and she works for Bradkin in London. They are expecting their first child. Dwight, 25, and his wife Jess live in Oil Springs with their two children, Ethan and Madison. Dwight works for Union Gas in Sarnia and Jess is a nurse at Bluewater Health. Marty, 22, just completed a Bio-medical Science degree at the University of Guelph and is now at the University of Toronto working on a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Dale has served as president of the Ontario Salers Association and he and his father, Jim, have been faithful supporters of all Salers related events. The Butlers are well deserving of the title “Breeder of the Year”!

JuNior of the Year ~ CharleNe Sereda

When Charlene Sereda is enthused about something, she’s all in. Salers cattle happen to be one of her passions, and that’s clear as she discusses bloodlines and performance of the family’s herd. Sereda’s dedication and desire helped her earn the Canadian Sal-ers 2014 Junior of the Year award.

Sereda and her family started out in the Calgary area, but moved their cattle operation to near Big Valley in 2006. She was involved in the 4-H program with both beef and horse projects. “I learned a lot about fitting, clipping and judging with my beef project,” said Sereda. She struggled, though, with having to sell her steer proj-ect at the end of the year, so she decided to focus on her horse project, staying in 4-H for eight years. However, her love of cows continued to grow. Her father, Wayne, switched into Salers cattle by purchasing stock when Don Chalmers dispersed his herd. “Our friend Gerry Isley had Salers,” explained Charlene. “I’ve always been hands-on involved with our cows.” Sereda began her own direct involvement with the breed by claiming a Dynarich Salers cow named Lacy purchased by the family. “She had a bull calf, and I named him Taz, and we sold him to Depalmes. That was the first year we were in the New Trend Salers Sale (in Olds). That was my first (sale). He was a cool guy.” “That’s also when I learned that ‘socializing’ the bulls is a good thing. I go out and talk to them, and sit in the feeder. Fifteen min-utes a day is all it takes. If you do that every day, by the time the sale comes around, they’re completely handle-able. By socializing them and making sure they’re gentle, and understand people, it gives them a better chance to become a herd sire.”

Socializing isn’t only for the bulls! Sereda has made a point of us-ing the world of social media to spread the word on Salers and their own cattle. She built a Facebook page for Sereda Stock Farms just before last year’s bull sale. “I started taking pictures last win-ter. I would take my camera when I was putting out hay and snap pictures,” Sereda noted. Posting them seemed to catch people’s attention, and the ‘likes’ began to climb. But it also generated some business interest. “A guy from Ontario came out and looked at

Junior Of The Year AwardCharlene Sereda

Sereda Stock FarmsBig Valley, AB

bulls and was interested, and he found us through Facebook. It re-ally opens up a whole new market.”

Sereda graduated from high school with honors in 2014, and is spending the year working with her cattle and horses, before pur-suing further education. She believes working with cattle has re-ally helped her personal development, admitting in her younger years, she wasn’t very enthusiastic about helping her father. “But he started getting me more into the raising of the cattle and the bull sale side of it. Then I was the one going out to feed cows, when he went back to work full-time. I was amazed. There’s a huge sense of responsibility there that just drives you. I didn’t understand that before, until I had to do it myself.” “The cattle have really helped me grow as a person, to understand that drive, and find the mo-tivation. They take so much work. But it’s very fulfilling. You get a great sense of accomplishment for doing it. You see cows happy and warm, chewing their cud, and know you did that.”

Horses are a still big part of Sereda’s life, as she competes on the reining circuit. She and her eight-year-old mare Cee Chicadee, or Livvy, as Sereda calls her, have been a great team. She was thrilled to win a buckle at the Canadian Supreme in Red Deer this fall. But her working cow horse really does cow work at home on the ranch!

While the 18-year-old isn’t exactly sure of her career path yet, she does know cattle and horses will definitely be part of it. “I think I would go crazy if I wasn’t in agriculture or working with animals,” she laughed. “I know that I want to have animals involved with the rest of my life.”

PerformaNCe Breeder ofthe Year - Co-alta SalerS

There is no doubt John Nikkel loves cattle. He was one of those folks born with a real connection to livestock. But it took some searching to find the right match for the type of cattle he wanted to raise on his ranch, located just outside Coaldale. “In the days of the exotic boom, I tried every breed,” Nikkel explains. “But none of them really appealed to us. When I tried Salers, I decided to stay in them. I bought three good cows and did embryo transfer with them, so that gave us a boost from the start.”

That was 26 years ago, and those three foundation cows were the backbone of what’s become a ‘go-to’ Salers herd in the western Canadian cattle industry. For his efforts and dedication to good breeding, John Nikkel has been named the Perfor-mance Breeder of the Year by the Salers As-sociation of Canada.

The reasons Nikkel was initially drawn to the breed are the same ones he uses to sell his bulls today. “They looked rugged to me, with a good haircoat,” recalled Nikkel. “Their calving ease is the strongest reason for the demand for bulls. Their pigmenta-tion is good, and they have lots of milk. In my mind, they were head and shoulders over all the other breeds.” But while the eye appeal and common sense characteristics are strong, it’s the performance Nikkel likes to track and highlight on his Salers herd, which today is around 120 head in size. “Statistics are not the only tool, but they one tool. It’s information you can hold in front of a buyer, so you can show what the

calves will do.” Nikkel started assembling his arsenal of data fifteen years back when he put some of his bulls on test at Card-ston. “They did well, and I realized how important it is to get comparisons to know where you’re at with other breeds.” Keep-ing performance records and doing the ex-tra work associated with raising purebred cattle is no easy task, but it’s one Nikkel takes pride in doing well.

In his early days as a purebred breeder, Nik-kel marketed his bulls mainly through the test station sale and by word of mouth. But as he developed some buyers and grew his herd size, he reached the point of hosting his own bull sale. The Co-Alta Salers Cow Booster Bull Sale is held each April in Leth-bridge and 2015 will be his sixth edition of the sale. “At least fifty per cent of the bulls go for heifer use because of the calving ease. The buyers are happy with the results and seem to keep coming back.” Most bulls from the Co-Alta Sale go to new homes within a 100 mile radius, which is a com-plement since the ‘close to home’ market is often considered the toughest to crack!

John and his wife Anne recently celebrated their 56th anniversary and are pleased to have all six of their children in southern Al-berta, with two connected to cattle. Son John is raising cattle at his place near Iron Springs, while a daughter and her husband manage a nearby pasture. There are 13 grandchildren, and Anne is proud of the unique fact that they all came in the order of boy-girl, a trend that has continued into their great-grandchildren so far as well!

A man of deep faith, Nikkel feels cattle have been his calling. “It’s born into me,” admitted Nikkel. “I like cattle. When I was young, I’d beg my Dad, who wasn’t a cattle-man, to buy cattle so that I could take care of them and watch them. That love for cat-tle hasn’t diminished.” While Nikkel does have seasonal hired help, and son John is only a phone call away, at nearly 80 he still does primarily all the work, including put-ting the sale catalogue together. A knee replacement last summer helped his mo-bility. “As you get older your enthusiasm is not what it used to be,” he smiled. “But I still enjoy it.”

While Nikkel savours every day, there are some special ones in the cattle business. “It used to be seeing newborn calves, and wondering how the calf crop would be from a particular bull. The sale day gives you a certain amount of psyche, but I do get uptight. I’m not a casual observer,” he smiled wryly. “At same time, it’s like playing a game of hockey and when you win, you forget about that, and you look back and say it was a good experience. That’s how it is with bull sales.”

It was also great day when John found out about the 2014 recognition he received from his Salers peers. “It is an honor to be selected as recipient of this award.” While the performance of Co-Alta Salers cattle have been their selling feature, folks in the cattle industry know, the breeder is a big factor in doing business. Go to other rancher’s herds and they’ll be quick to point out their John Nikkel cattle because of their quality, but also because of the per-sonality of the seller – a true cattleman.

ISLEY, Gerald Clifford

Gerald Isley passed away on Friday, August 1, 2014 at the age of 77 years. He will be loving remember by his wife of 55 years, Jean, his children, Toni (Ken) Garlock, Scott, Kelly (Nancy) and Gerry Jr. along with his many grandchil-dren.

Gerald was born in Vermillion AB. As a young man he loved cars and stock car racing. Gerald had his journeyman mechanic certificate, a skill that would come in handy repairing stock cars and later when he established Gerry Isley Trucking. He was highly respected in the trucking industry and became a representative on the Alberta Sand and Gravel Board.

In 1978 the family moved to Langdon, AB where Gerald decided to pursue another of his dreams, owning a herd of cattle; this lead to him showing and selling Salers breeding stock across North America. His passion for Salers cattle has been passed down to his son Gerry Jr. and grandchildren, Taylor, Riley and Cody.

In his retirement Gerald and Jean spent winters in Mexico and Phoenix and summers at their cabin at Little Bow. Gerald was very proud of his family’s accomplishments and loved having them around.

CHISHOLM, John W.

John W. Chisholm, a Nova Scotian entrepreneur and a founding member of the Maritime Salers Association, passed away on July 4th 2014 at the age of 68.

John spent most of his life in the road building and earth moving business, running Nova Construction and subsidiary companies for 40 years. In this later life, he established a farm and raised Salers cattle with his children; it was an endeavour he truly loved. He was passionate about the breed and, along with his brother-in-law Gerry Grant, he worked to gain prominence to Salers in Nova Scotia. He was a strong supporter of local shows and of the 4-H movement, where he encouraged many local kids to show Salers.

John leaves behind his wife Anne, his children and their families, and four beautiful grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

PaLMer, Bob

Bob Palmer passed away on July 24th, 2014 at the age of 74 years. Bob was predeceased by his wife Marlene and survived by his daughter Bev (Elliot) and son Rob as well his grandchildren.

Bob was an enthusiastic breeder of Salers cattle, operating under the name of B and P Ranches. Bob was a past president of the Salers Association of Canada and it was during Bob’s presidency that the Association strived to make Salers cattle beta-mannosidosis free. Bob, along with his brother Jim, imported one of the first Salers females from France in the early 1970’s. Over time he partnered on some Salers cattle with Ken Evans and Miller McCoy. Ken and Miller, along with Gramps (Bob’s dad), had many good times with Bob and his Salers. Bob owned and managed Salers cattle until 2010.

Bob was an enthusiastic hockey player – a goalie in the era before facemasks. He also love to fish, he took many trips to the Queen Charlotte Islands fishing for salmon. One of Bob’s hobbies was restoring old cars and taking in car shows with his wife Marlene, daughter Bev and her family.

Bob was a man of integrity and honesty. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends
