Chair of Governors Statement
Dear Parent or Guardian
As Governors reflect on the year just past, overall they would see 2016/17 as an extremely successful year. We had a very positive launch of The John Frost School along with the continued development of the new building and refurbishment programme.
Of course, parents, students and society generally tend to judge a school on the basis of its academic achievements – and rightly so, because these are so important to young peoples’ future aspirations and
employment prospects. The John Frost School did not disappoint in 2017 with yet another successful year
in pass rates, 60% of students achieved 5 or more GCSE’s grades A* - C. The A - level pass rate overall was 89%, with all students who wished to move onto Higher Education finding a place at their chosen
universities.
Governors have been pleased with the completion of the new building and the continuing, very positive
ethos in the school, including the construction of new buildings; improvements and maintenance of the current site and with the way in which the learning environment is reinforced by the good behaviour of our
students, especially in difficult times when building is taking place. The school continues to be a safe and secure place for students to learn. Some excellent staffing appointments have been made and financial
management, even in these difficult times, is strong too.
The life of the school continues to thrive, with students of all ages achieving good things not just in academia,
but in sport and in the community. These achievements are well documented on our social media outlets and on the school's web-site. It is always invidious to mention just one or two examples in a short report of
this kind; so please do follow the achievements of our young people by using these sources.
Of the many exciting events in the school's year, Prize Giving stood out as one of special significance. Success
of the students was underlined as so many filed past to receive awards of all types. This was further reinforced by the Sports Awards at the end of the summer term. Students are now so successful that The
John Frost School needs two evenings to celebrate their successes. Doubtless these young people are an inspiration to their peers, but also to their teachers who have worked so hard to set them on the right road.
As I draw this annual report to a close, I must mention the Head Teacher, Mr Jonathan Wilson who has been the Head Teacher at Duffryn and latterly, The John Frost School for fourteen years. Over that time
the school has improved in every way imaginable. I am sure that you will join with me in wishing Mr Wilson a long and happy retirement. I know that Mr Wilson would be the first to recognise the hard work of the
Senior Leadership Team, our staff, Teaching and Non-Teaching and celebrate the effort extended to ensure
that every single student receives the attention and support that they deserve.
I am equally certain that you will all join with me in wishing the new Head Teacher, Mr Mark Tucker, every success in his new role. Mr Tucker will, I know, continue the drive towards excellence and will be an
exceptional head at this exciting time for the school. He has the undisputed support of every member of the
Governing Body.
In conclusion, I would like to pay tribute to my Governing Body, for their commitment to the school and
their support for me; and to add that you can contact me on any issue through the school's address.
Yours sincerely
Sue O’Brian

Toilets are accessible at all times. Students are encouraged to use the toilets during break or lunch or between lessons. A full time member of staff cleans the toilets throughout each school day to ensure that they are kept in the best condition possible for students. Additionally, the school council has been consulted on toilet facilities in the school and their views taken into account in the management and development of the school’s toilet facilities.

Additional Learning Needs The John Frost School is committed to provide a high quality, appropriate education for all of our students. We believe that all students should have access to a broad and balanced curriculum. We strive to eliminate all forms of discrimination and prejudice and develop an environment in which all students can flourish and reach their potential. The school has an ALN policy which was produced in consultation with Newport LA advisory service and is reviewed by the Governors on an annual basis. Students’ Additional learning needs are identified through:
Transitional visits to all feeder primary schools
Information from parents
Information from teachers and outside agencies
Screening tests 2016/2017 (Internal and external screening tests)
Twenty Seven students were awarded Statements of Educational Need as of 1 September 2016. The number of students without statements who were maintained on the SEN register fluctuated but was 280 in November 2016. Therefore, at that date the total was 307 students. At the end of the summer term 2017 eight students with a statement left. Forty one students were granted special arrangements when undertaking GSCE and A level examinations. Their concessions included reader, scribe, and use of a word processor, separate room and extra time. The duties of reader and scribe were carried out by the Learning Support Assistants (LSA). Learning Support Assistants delivered programmes in Literacy, Numeracy, Communication and Social and Emotional aspects of Learning. Specialist LSAs worked on individual programmes for students with dyslexia and dyslexia related difficulties. LSAs supported students holding Statements of Special Educational Needs and students on the SEN register. Their methodology ensured that maximum support was given to both the teacher and the students within each class. All LSAs worked across a variety of the curriculum areas and year groups. LSAs monitored IEPs and contributed to relevant statutory assessments and review meetings. Staff development opportunities included Asthma Awareness, Epilepsy and Epi-pen training, First Aid, Attachment Theory, SAP training, alongside on-going in-house INSET training such as Child Protection and Assertive Discipline. Two Learning Support Assistants gained a qualification in Emotional literacy. The Department worked very closely with the Learning Support Base Manager, Education Welfare Officer, Youth Worker, Educational Psychologist, Visual Impairment Service, Hearing Impaired Service, School Nurse, SEN Careers Wales and other relevant agencies to ensure the needs of the students are met.

Sport and Extra Curricular The PE department provides a balanced and varied programme of activities for all students within curriculum time and during extra-curricular clubs. All students are encouraged to attend as many clubs as possible. We continue to highlight the dates and results of activities and fixtures through the school e-mail system, student voice, assemblies and form time. We post messages and results on the school website and use twitter regularly to highlight achievement. In 2016-17 we had 14 students who represented Newport, Gwent and South East Wales in Football, Rugby, Cross Country, Athletics, Swimming, Taekwondo, Netball and Basketball. We are also proud to have had 11 students who represented Wales in a variety of sports, including Trampolining, Gymnastics, Football, Basketball, weightlifting, Dance and Climbing. Well done to Rebecca Skinner (Trampolining), Macey Chapman, Nate Sinclair, Beatrice Jackaman (Gymnastics), Bryony McNulty (Dance), James Vincent (Climbing), Luc Noble and Hakeem Al-Haddi (Football), Neva Hughes (Basketball), Oliver Meakin (Weightlifting), Kaci-Marie Jenkins (Dance), Samuel Tonks (Taekwondo). We continue to be encouraged by the number of students who are committed to and involved in sport. We play representative fixtures against other schools in Rugby, Football, Netball, Tennis, Cricket, Athletics and Cross Country. We always perform well in Newport Schools competitions and our students are great ambassadors of the school. They are proud to wear The John Frost School colours and are consistently full of enthusiasm and commitment. In 2017 we performed particularly well in Rugby, Football and Cross Country. In Football we reached 6 out of 8 possible semi- finals (winning 2) and in cross country no less than 5 students were selected to run for South East Wales; very commendable statistics. Year 7 Rugby also reached the town final – a great achievement.

We have strong ties with the community and have links with several local clubs which helps to foster a positive community spirit within the school. We are in our 9th year of the 5x60 programme and the initiative continues to promote sport for all. This will be rebranded as Newport Live in 2017. During 2016 we appointed a WRU Rugby development Officer, ex-student John Lavender, who currently plays in the front row for Newport RFC. We believe this has had a positive impact on the continued development of Rugby within the school and the wider community. For instance, 30 students from Years 8 & 9 train regularly with Pill Harriers RFC.
