Aurotac SlipringsSpecimas, a Cavotec Group company , is since 1963 engineering and manufacturing cable reels, slipring assemblies and Panzerbeltcable protection systems for ports, marine, offshore and tunnelling applications.MacGregor Sweden was the first marine customer who is installing our slipring assemblies since 25 year in their ship cranes.Located 10 km from Milan, Specimas employs 70 persons of which 15 graduated or equivalent engineers. Specimas is committedto quality of the products as well as there service. More than 30.000 cable reels and slipring assemblies have been installed duringthe last 35 years.

A revolutionary propulsion system

Since the early 1950's, Asea BrownBoveri (ABB) has been supplying electri-cal propulsion and power plants for halfof the world's icebreakers and many spe-cial purpose vessels built by KvaernerMasa Yard (KMY) in Finland.

AC/DC power plants and the Cyclo propul-sion systems were introduced by ABB andKMY as a new technology early in 1983.

New propulsion systems have been deve-loped by other large companies likeSchottel-Siemens from Germany andAlstom from France operating under dif-ferent names as: Azipod (registred tradename of ABB), SSP Propulsor (registeredtrade name of Siemens Schottel) orMermaid (registered trade name of Alstom).

These systems incorporate an electricalmotor azymuting (sle-wing) through 360 deginstalled inside thepod. The pod itself isinstalled outside theship’s hull.

The revolutionary advantages of thesystem are: • excellent manoeuvrability and dyna-

mic performance as the propeller canbe directed in any direction within360 deg.

• space and weight savings, no longshaftlines, reduction gears, rudder

• fuel savings through improved hydro-dynamic efficiency

• low noise and vibrations by the use ofoptimised propeller wake field

• safety and redundancy

Two propulsion drives

ABB azipod propulsionInstalled on top of the ABB Azipodsystem, the MPS slipring system allowsthe pod and propeller to rotate the total360 degrees. It’s function is to:

• Transfer power (example 3600 Amps,1,5 KV) from the diesel generators tothe revolving outboard electricalmotor and propeller through brushesand rings

• Transfer auxiliary power, controlsignals and data signals or opticalsignals from the pod to the control

room, through silver brushes and ringsand/ or optical swivel joint.

• Transfer hydraulic, oil, water and airnecessary for the motor through ahydraulic swivel

• Mount and support the steering anglesensors for the ship steering systemand the visual steering angle indicator

• Function as a part of the air coolingsystem of the motor

Siemens-schottel SSP propulsionInstalled on the top of the Siemens-Schottel SSP System, the MPS slipringsystem allows the pod and propeller torotate the total 360 degrees. Its function is to:

• Transfer power (example 2000 Amps, 1,5 KV) from the diesel generators tothe revolving outboard electricalmotor and propellers through brushesand rings

• Transfer auxiliary power, controlsignals and data signals from the pod

to the control room through brushesand rings and/or inductive systems.

• Transfer water and air necessary for the motor through a hydraulic swi-vel

• Mount and support the steering anglesensors for the ship steering system and the visual steering angle indicator

Specimas Cavotec's contribution to a revolutionary propulsion system

In the early 90's, ABB Marine andKvaerner Masa Yard of Finland approa-ched Specimas for a R & D study concer-ning the power, data and hydraulic tran-smission for a revolutionary ship propul-sion system using an outboard electricalmotor instead of the traditional on lineshaft inboard diesel powered propulsion. The 360 degrees manoeuvrability requi-res the installation of a slipring unit ableto transmit up to 4000 Amps at 3 kV,data - control through optical fibers, orconventional rings and a special multichanel swivel for billage, oil, grease and air.

After 3 years of tests and studies first onthe Lunni ice breaking oil tanker andafter that on the Botnica, in 1995 wereceived the first orders for the FantasyClass Carnival Corporation, M/S Paradise and Elation.

In 1999, Siemens-Schottel of Germanyplaced the first order for a similar systemto power two TT-lines ferries and theCosta Classica cruise liners. With a population of over 59 MarinePropulsion Sliprings (MPS) installed allover the world, in different type of shipsfrom cruise liners, to ice-breakers, ferries,military ships, etc, Specimas – Cavotec istoday the only supplier able to offer acomplete system combining electrical,data and hydraulic transmission.

The reliability of the system is vital andthe 24/24 hours service, availability ispart of our strength to serve our custo-mers navigating where ever, fromBarrents Sea to the Coral Sea, from theNorth Sea to Panama, or from theChinese Sea to the Tasmanian Sea.

The MPS slipring system is supplied in an IP 44 heavy robust steel housing for marine use and ispre-wired with cables or hoses according to the customer request.

Applications

The MPS sliprings are installed at thestern of the ship and according to theapplication can be single or twin, centrallylocated , or port and starboard side.

Designed , manufactured and tested to resist to forces of 5 G or more and strong vibrations, the MPS slipringis a vital component to theship reliability.
