Mission

ARAI has a strong base of state-of-the-art technology equipment, laboratory facilities and highly qualified and experienced personnel. With these assets, ARAI has goals, strategies and action plans to achieve the fullest customer satisfaction. These are:-

(a) to compete in service with excellence

(b) to obtain recognition and accreditation

(c) to cover global market

(d) to build commitment of all personnel

(e) to develop team spirit and sense of belonging amongst all.

● ARAI has been providing various services to the Indian Automotive Industry, in the areas of design & development and know-how for manufacture & testing of components / system to national / international standards. ARAI shall strive to achieve international recognition in these areas.

● ARAI shall seek valuable guidance and support from members, from time to time to achieve growth and stability.

● With the globalisation of economy and business, ARAI shall enlarge its scope of services to meet the requirements of automotive industries any where in the world.

● ARAI strongly believes that satisfaction of customer needs on continuing basis, is of prime importance to earn loyalty of customers. Therefore, emphasis shall be on meeting and exceeding customer needs through continuing quality improvement with active participation of employees and also customers.

HighStrengthSteels(AHSS)bytheCopyrightOffice,GovernmentofIndia.Our commitment to excellence and innovation served us well once againin2017-18,unlockinganotheryearofstrongperformance.OurOperationalIncomegrewby15.4%ascomparedtolastyear.Also,wecontinuedtoextractvaluefromourportfolioofopportunities,includingtheleadershippositionweenjoy in certification segment, by becoming the first certification agency inIndiatoissuethefirstBSVICertification.Ourfocusonresearchisbuildingmanymorecapabilitiesandcompetencies, resulting innewofferings toourcustomers,notlimitingtoautomotive,butalsotoothersectorslikedefence,consumer durables and healthcare. We recognize technology is key for efficient managing of our processes.Accordingly,thisyearwecommencedimplementationofSAPwhichwillenablebringinginauniformsystemandasingleplatformformanagingourbusinessprocesses.Alongwiththis,administrativeproceduresarebeingtightenedwithdeploymentoftechnologytoenhanceconfidentialityandintegrityofinformation.This,Iamsurewillfurtherboostourcredibilityandtrustamongstourcustomers.

ExcellenceandInnovation... we continued to extract value from our portfolio of opportunities, including the leadership position we enjoy in certification segment, by becoming the first certification agency in India to issue the first BS VI Certification.

Wealsorecognizethatforaninstitutelikeours,costsavingsalonecannotdriveourlongtermperformance.Growthisthekeyfactorforlong-termsuccessanditmeansthatourbusinessisdependentoncontinuousinnovation,whetherthisisintheformofdevelopmentofnewtechnologies/solutionsorprocessimprovements.Andso,wecontinuedtotreadthepathtowardsleveragingourstrengths for developing reliable and affordable solutions through strategic research and collaborations. The year saw successful completion of fiveprojects supported by Department of Heavy Industry (DHI) on lightweightforging process development; methodology development for estimatingvehicleoperatingcost;powerboostingofsmall(single&twocylinder)dieselenginesbysuperchargingapproach;development&implementationofsmartstructuralsystemconcepts;andpreparationofdraftstandardsforAC/DCChargingStationsforxEVapplication.Inadditiontothese,anotherfiveprojects(supportedbyDHI)andtwoprojects(fundedinternally)arebeingimplemented.AnotableprogressioninoneoftheongoingDHIsupportedprojectsissuccessfuldevelopmentofaprototypeoflightweightlowfloorcitybuswithAluminiumSuperstructuremeetingBusBodyCode(AIS–052).

At ARAI, we constantly take cognizance of the changing dynamics andappropriatelybuildtheseintoourplansinordertoaddressthechallengesandtakeadvantageof theemergingopportunities. In linewiththis,weinvestedin technology, infrastructure, human resource development and internalprocessesinordertoconnectwithourcustomersmoreeffectively.Theoverallfocuswasoncreatingaportfolio that focusesonvalueandaddresses thespecific needs of our customers.We established Environmental ResearchLaboratory (forairquality&vehicleexhaustmonitoring);VirtualCalibration

Centre(forfastercalibrationofvehiclestomeetBSVInorms);TransmissionandGearBoxTestfacility;in-houseTestRigsdevelopmentforvarioustestsetc.duringtheyear.Wefirmlybelievethatthesestate-of-the-artfacilitiesdifferentiate and put us ahead of our competition.Fosteringdiversityofthoughts,disciplinesandexperienceisfundamentaltoourapproach.Weareactivelypursuingcross-functionaldevelopmentofourhumanresourceacrosstheinstitute.Aseparatecross-functionalgroupchristenedas‘TechnologyGroup’,isworkingintheareaslikeGreenMobility,Adaptronics,IntelligentControlsetc.fordevelopingtechnologysolutionsforthefuture.Atthesametime,wearealsofocusingoncompetencydevelopmentinspecificdomainslikeBSVI,SimulationandTransmission.Theyearsawuscontributing toagreatextentasaTechnicalSecretariat forstandardizationandharmonizationactivities.Thisyear,nineAutomotiveIndustryStandards(AIS)werereleasedtakingthetotalstandardspublishedtilldateto187,coveringwiderangeofsubjectsfordifferentcategoriesofmotorvehicles.Ontheknowledgedisseminationfront,ourTrainingCentreorganizedabout50ProficiencyImprovementProgrammes(PIPs)andDomainTrainingProgrammes(DTPs)forindustrypersonnelinvariousautomotiveengineeringdomains.Our Learning Centre through its collaborations with national and international universities continues to offerundergraduate,postgraduateanddoctorateprogrammeswithspecializationinautomotiveengineering.

LookingAheadWemoveintothefuturewithoptimismandpurpose,confidentinourleadershiprole in developing solutions that unlock the potential for our progress. TheGoverningCouncilofARAIhasgreatpleasureinpresentingtheAnnualReportalongwithOverviewofOperationsandAuditedStatementofAccountsfortheyearending31stMarch2018.2017-18wasanexcitingyearatARAIaswedemonstratedstrongdeliveryandover15%growthinOperationalIncome,which validates both the strength and the potential of our institute. I amgrateful to theGoverningCouncil andmycolleaguesatARAIforallthattheyhavedonetodeliverthis.Wearedrivenbythequesttodevelopaffordablesolutionsforourcustomers,thereby,enhancingaccesstootherwiseexpensivetechnologies.Oursteadfastcommitmenttoinnovationhasenabledusindesigning&developingsuccessfullyanAluminiumSuperstructure for a low floor city bus, whichmeets Bus Body CodeAIS:052requirements.Also,we leveragedour innovationmodel todevelopsolutions forimplementing smart structure concepts in automobiles and in developing a simulator forinteroperabilityofBharatEVChargers.Wearenowharnessingourcapabilitiesinautomotiveelectronicstodevelopintelligentvehicletechnologyfeatureslikeparallelparking&lanekeepassistanceandconvertingICEngineVehicletoHybridElectricVehicle(HEV).Ourstrategy tobuild capacitiesandcapabilities formeeting industry’s futureneedshasdemonstrated its value thisyear,withARAIbecomingthefirstcertificationinstituteinIndiatoissueBSVIcertification.AnothernoteworthyaspectincertificationactivityhasbeencertificationofElectricBuses.Similarly,theevaluationexercisescarriedoutonmedicalequipmenthasaddedthehealthcaresectortoourclientelelist.

Ourbusinesshasevolvedtoasizeandscalethatispoisedtoaddressnationalaswellasglobalopportunities.Wehavecrossedmanycredibilitymilestonesinourjourneysofar,duringwhichwehavesuccessfullydeliveredseveralassignmentsacrossourverticals.Attheheartofthismomentousjourneyareourdedicated,innovative and talented employees and theGoverningCouncil that has beensupportive and a guiding factor. I firmly believe our continuing success andsustainabilitywillbedeterminedbyourabilitytokeepcreatingnewsolutionsthatmeetourcustomers’needs.

DevelopmentandTestingActivitiesARAI undertakes research, developmental, testing andcertification projects for the automotive industry. Someof the projects in design, development, validation andevaluation areas undertaken during 2017-18 are givenbelow.

● LightweightBusProtoBuilding ThisisaDHIsupportedprojectonbuildinglightweight

bus prototypes (low floor and semi-low floor) withAluminium Superstructure for Indian city applicationmeetingBusBodyCode,AIS:052requirements.Also,designforaHighDeckbusisbeingdevelopedinthisproject.Underthisproject,AluminiumSuperstructurehas been designed, developed and integrated with

thesteelchassisof12mlowfloorbusafterremovingthe steel superstructure considering Indian road load inputs. The integration activity, while buildingthisprototype,hasbeencarriedoutwithmechanicalfastenersandweldinghasbeentotallyeliminatedforbetter strength and load carrying capacity. Further,theAluminium Superstructure has been seamlesslyintegrated with other bus sub systems like air-conditioning system, instrument panel, passengerentryandexitdoor.ThisdevelopedprototypemeetstheBusBodyCodeAIS:052 requirements and alsostrengthrequirementsmentionedinUBS-IIofMoUD.

Itisalsoequippedwithfiredetectionandsuppressionsystem (FDSS) alongwith ITS for enhanced safety.Improvedbusfuelsavingforcityapplication,corrosionresistance and low bus bodymaintenance cost aresome of the salient features. Similarly, prototypebuilding of a semi-low floor bus and design of highdeck bus with aluminium superstructure meetingbus body code, AIS:052 requirements are nearingcompletion.

● SmartStructures ThisDHIsupportedprojectwasonimplementingsmart

structures (vehicle concepts) in automobiles. Thesesmart structures facilitate monitoring and enhancement of mechanical properties of parts with the help ofadvanced methods of structural dynamics, signalprocessing and through integration of novel sensors and actuators. This project has helped in buildingcompetency in design and development of energyefficient lightweightingstructures /vehicleconceptswithfocusondesignoptimization.Itinvolvedvariousactivitieslikevibrationdampingofcomponents,useofinertialmassactuators,multi-disciplinaryoptimizationof chassis components, structural healthmonitoringof automotive components, energy harvesting usingpiezo-materials etc. PoCs developed in this projectare useful in technology enhancement of differentautomobile components, viz. steering, suspension,chassis etc. and to enhance vehicle performance in multi-disciplinaryaspects.

● GreenMobility–ConvertingICEngineVehicletoHybridElectricVehicle(HEV)

ARAIhadpreviouslyconfiguredandbuiltanElectricVehicle (EV) out of a conventional intra-city PublicTransport Small Commercial Vehicle. To takethis competency further, ARAI is now working onconverting an IC Engine Vehicle to Hybrid ElectricVehicle(HEV)withfocusontechnologydemonstrationof stability, durability and safety aspects. Themethodologyincludesstudyingdifferentarchitectures&componentsofHEV;benchmarking&targetsetting;controlstrategydevelopment;designoftransmission,mounting of motor, controller & battery; coolingsystem; and necessary design modifications in theexistingvehicle.Thisisfollowedbyvirtualsimulationforvibration,durabilityandcrashanalysisusingCAEtechniques. The developed prototype comprises ofindigenously designed hybrid vehicle components,which have been integrated and assembled on theexistingvehicle.Thecurrentstatus is that themotorhas been integrated with the existing transmission& mounted on the vehicle. Subsequent to this, itsfunctional testing has been completed successfullyonChassis-dyno inEVmode.HEV control strategydevelopment and calibration of the vehicle is in progress.

● CleanEnergy–Lithium-ionBatteryPackforEV Thisprojectisondesignanddevelopmentofamodular

BatterymoduleofanEVBatteryPack.Italsoincludesdeveloping a methodology for Multi-dimensionalElectro-chemical and thermally coupled simulation

for different chemistry of Lithium-ion batteries usingsimulation software. Under the project, literaturesurveyhasbeencarriedout tostudy thecells, theirelectrochemistry,interiorstructureaswellasthermalmanagementrequirementsforthebatterypackalongwithstudyofdifferent testingstandardsofbatteries.Further to this, geometry and chemistry of differentbatteries was analyzed for selection of appropriatebatteryforthetargetedapplication.Subsequenttothis,Electro-chemicalandThermalanalysisofthebatterieswascarriedouttostudytheheatgenerationratefordifferentloadcycles,capacityfadetestingofbatteries,internal resistance determination, capability testingand roadprofile testing.Further, virtual validationofthe design modules for static strength and thermal management hasalsobeen completed.Thebatterymodule being designed in this project will providefirmsupporttotheassembledbatteriesandwillhaveefficient thermal management system to maintaintemperature uniformity throughout the module. ThepresentstatusoftheprojectisthatMulti-dimensionalElectro-chemical and thermally coupled simulationfor different chemistry of Lithium-ion batteries hasbeencompletedanditsvalidationisinprogress.Also,validationofthedevelopedRPTmodelofthemoduleis in progress.

● SimulatorforInteroperabilityofBharatEVCharger(BEVC)DC-001Chargers

A Simulator, useful while testing Charging Stations,hasbeendevelopedin-houseatARAI.Thisdevelopedsimulator is ARAI’s contribution to ‘Make in India’

initiative of the government. It simulates vehicle environment and conditions during offline testingand validation of BEVC DC-001 charging stations.It iscapableof interfacingwithdifferent typesofDCcharging stations. Salient features of this simulatorinclude simulation of vehicle level environment,usefulforsysteminspection,verification&validation,communication protocol validation, fault simulation,data logging etc.

● PowerBoostingofSingleandTwoCylinderDieselEnginesusingSupercharger

ThisDHIsupportedprojectonpowerboostingofsingleand two cylinder diesel engines by superchargingapproach has been successfully completed. Theoutcome achieved was demonstration of enhancedspecific power from single & two cylinder dieselengines by supercharging approach with 30-40%increase in power over NA version and offeringdownsized diesel engines. For this purpose proto

engines with supercharging configuration werebuilt, which involved engine identification; baselinedatageneration, validation&optimization;designofmodified components & its prototype development.The proto engines with SC configuration were thenoptimizedtoachievethetargetedobjectives.

● DualFuel(Diesel-CNG)EngineforCEV Thisproject,afirstofitskindforoff-roadapplication,

wason conversion of existing diesel engine to dualfuel operation. It hasbeen our pursuit to unlock the superior potential of our workforcethroughvarioustrainingprogrammestargetedat enhancing domain skills and leadership development.

LeadershipDevelopmentOutbound leadership development programme wasinitiated to build, groom and develop leadershipcompetencies in-linewithARAI’sstrategy for the future.This intervention was for building an empowered teamculture, challenge processes and foster a culture ofcontinuous improvement. This programme helped insetting up open channels of communication betweensenior management team members and the second line.

DevelopingCompetenciesIt has been our pursuit to focus on unlocking the latent skills and developing competencies of our employeesthrough a variety of learning initiatives like classroomtraining / workshops / lectures by experienced trainers.Implementation of these initiatives resulted in imparting of 19979 man-hours of training to the employees intechnical, behavioural and functional areas. Moreover,considering theemergingneedsof the industry,specifictrainingprogrammesforcompetencydevelopmentinBS–VI,Simulation,TransmissionandAutonomousVehiclewerealsoorganized.

CompetencyMappingCompetency mapping exercise has been taken up atARAI,whichwillhelpinsuccessionplanningandcareerdevelopmentoftheemployees.Aspartofthisexercise,asystematicapproachisbeingadoptedforunderstandingthecriticalprocesses,identifyingjobspecificcompetencies(technical & behavioural) and mapping them with theexistingscenario.Thisisbeingplannedforbothjuniorandsenior level executives.

EnvironmentResearchLaboratory(ERL): VirtualCalibrationCentre(VCC):

ERLhasbeenestablishedatARAIwithanendeavourtoconductappliedresearchinthefieldofambientairmanagement,vehicleexhaust,indoorairqualityandvehicle cabin-air for protection of environment andimprovement in the quality of precious human life.TheresearchworkatERLwillhelpinunderstandingthe sources & mechanism of pollution caused byautomobileexhaust.Further,impactonambientairwillalsobestudiedusingscientifictoolsandtechniquesat this laboratory. Itwillalsostudy theeffectivenessof control interventions through data & information generated in respect of the corrective actions taken for pollutioncontrolfromvehicleexhaust.Thislaboratoryis equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for airquality&vehicleexhaustmonitoring;analysisofnon-regulated pollutants; and evaluation of different fuels.

Virtual Calibration Centre with Virtual Test Bed(VTB)hasbeenestablishedatARAI.Thiscentre isan integration of ARAI’s experience and expertisein Simulation, Hardware-in-loop (HiL) Testing andCalibrationforBSVIforfutureproductdevelopmentswith reduced number of prototypes and also toaccelerate the time to market. It enables calibration of vehicles to meet BS VI norms at a faster paceas it is carried out in HiL environment. In VCC thephysicalengine,after-treatmentsystemsandvehicleare replaced with real time high accuracy modelsretaining real ECU and the critical hardware. Thesystem is suitable for calibration of single to eightcylinderenginesofvariouspowercapacities,aswellas after-treatment systems like DoC, NOx, After-treatment(SCR,LNT),DieselParticulateFilter(DPF)andGasolineParticulateFilter(GPF)etc.

Theconference featured advanced research and applications in electrified transportation, including electric vehicles,hybridelectricvehiclesandplug-inhybridelectricvehiclesas well as heavy-duty, rail, off-road vehicles, airplanesandships.Duringthisconference,30keynotesand120technical papers were presented by Indian as well asinternationalexpertsfromindustry,researchorganizationand academia. Centre of Excellence for E-mobility

In line withNationalElectricMobilityMissionandfocusofGovernmentofIndiaonElectricMobility,significantgrowthinElectricVehicledevelopmentisenvisagedinIndia.Webelievethattechnologyadvances and increasing stringent regulatorynorms will pushmore automotive designers toelectrifypowertrain.ARAI, the premier Automotive R&D Testingand Certification institute in the country, hasgeared itself to support automotive industryfor development, evaluation and certificationof EV. Towards this purpose, ARAI has setup comprehensive state-of-the-art Center ofExcellence (CoE) for Electric / Hybrid Electricvehicles (2W - 3W, Passenger cars, Buses,Commercial vehicles) and their componentssuch as traction batteries, motors, controllers,chargers etc.This ‘Centre of Excellence’ in E-mobility isbeing established atARAI -Homologation andTechnologyCentre (ARAI-HTC),ChakanunderFAME–IndiaSchemeofDepartmentofHeavyIndustry, Government of India. The facilities atthis Centre will cater to development, testing,evaluation and calibration requirements ofelectric,hybridelectricvehiclesandassociatedsub-systemsunderoneroof.Thestate-of-the-artfacilities being installed include traction motor testbeds,batteryemulators,batteryperformancetest systems with environmental chamberand chassis dynamometer with emissionmeasurement system for heavy commercialvehicles. It will support Government’s Electric MobilityMission to scale up Electric Vehicles (EVs) inIndia and automotive vehicle and component manufacturers.
