The Bharathiar University was establishedby the Government of Tamil Nadu in the Year 1982,under the Bharathiar University Act I of 1981 (TamilNadu University Act I of 1982).

The University was recognized by the U.G.Cfor the purpose of the award of grants, in 1985.The University is a member of the Association ofIndian Universit ies and the Association ofCommonwealth Universities. It is of an affiliatingtype, with jurisdiction over the revenue districtof Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Tirupur and Erode. It hasat present 102 Affiliated Colleges including 91 Artsand Science Colleges, 1 Air Force AdministrativeCollege, 11 Institutions of Information Science &Management and 21 Research Institutions.

The University is situated at the foot ofthe Maruthamalai Hills about 12 kms from the cityof Coimbatore, in a sprawling campus of around

1000 acres. The atmosphere is quite serene and is idealfor intellectual pursuits. The campus has a numberof architecturally designed buildings, which housethe various Teaching and Research Departments,the Library, the Internet Centre, the AdministrativeOffices, the Hostels and the Canteen.

The University has 13 schools and 33Research Departments on Campus, dedicated toteaching and research, which include theBharathiar School of Management and EntrepreneurDevelopment and the School of Distance Education.All the Departments / Schools are manned by highlyqualified and experienced faculty members.

The University follows Choice Based CreditSystem and semester pattern of instruction for allthe Post – graduate courses. Each semester ishaving a minimum of ninety working days. TheUniversity Examinations are conducted at the endof each semester.

II. 1. M.Phil. ProgrammeEligibility

1. Candidates with Master’s Degree ofBharathiar University in the concerned or relateddiscipline or any other qualification recognizedas equivalent thereto by the Syndicate ofBharathiar University.

All candidates should have passed two yearPost Graduate degree course after 3-yearBachelor’s degree course and Higher Secondarycourse of 2-year duration after 10-year SSLC orone year Pre-degree after 11-year S.S.L.C.Further, candidates who have passed the PGdegraee examination with less than 17 years oftotal duration of study are not eligible foradmission to M.Phil. programme.

a) Candidates belonging to the followingcategories are eligible to register for M.Phil(Full-Time) programme.

(i) Candidaes with a minimum of 50% marksin PG degree be permitted to register forM.Phil., / Ph.D. (Full Time / Partime programmes).

Further Those who have secured lesser than55% (except SC/ST) of marks and got admittedare specifically informed that they are noteligible for teaching positions as per UGC andState Government Norms.

(ii) Further those who are working as (Full timeResearch Assistants / Project fellows / JRF /SRF in time bound Research schemes or oneyear duration or more in University Departments.Research departments of Affiliated Colleges /Recognized Research Institutions are eligible foradmission.

b) Candidates belonging to the followingcategories are eligible to register for M.Phil.(Part-Time) programme.

i) Any person employed in any concern /organization / institution situated within thejurisdiction of the State of Tamilnadu orResearch Institutions situated outside the Stateof Tamilnadu recognized by Bharathiar Universitywith a minimum of 50% of Marks in the Master’sDegree. Such candidates shall produce a NoObjection Certificate from the Employer orHead of the Institution (in case of EducationalInstitutions).

ii) Candidates working in colleges affiliated toUniversities other than Bharathiar Universityhave to produce a No Objection Certificate fromthe Head of the Insitution / University.

iii) If the necognised guides are availabe in thenon-lab oriented subjects in the affiliatedcolleges, the candidates may be negistered forthe P.T. programme in the non-lab orientedsubjects.

2. DurationM.Phil. : Full – time

The duration of the M.Phil. Full-Timeprogramme shall extend over a period of oneacademic year (twelve months) consisting oftwo semesters commencing from September 1st.

M.Phil. : Part – timeThe duration of the M.Phil. Part-time

programme shall extend over a period of twoacademic years commencing from 1stSeptember.

The maximum period for completion of theM.Phil. programme is two years in the case ofFull – time candidates, and three years in thecase of Part-Time candidates.

3. Course of StudyThe course of study for the M.Phil. degree

programme shall consist of three written papersunder Part I and a Dissertation under Part II ofthe Programme.

(i) Theory Papers (under Part I)Paper I Research Methodology

Paper II Trends in the concerneddiscipline

Paper III Special Paper(Pertaining to the area ofspecialization chosen by theCandidate under a guide)

The Part I examinations shall be conductedduring March / September every year.

(ii) Dissertation (under Part II)

Candidates shall be required to choose aresearch problem in his/her chosen area ofresearch and submit a dissertation incorporatingthe results of his /her investigation, carriedoutunder the supervision of a recognized supervisor

4. RegistrationAll Candidates who are admitted into the

M.Phil. programme (Full-Time or Part-Time) willbe registered to do research in a particular topicunder the supervision of a recognized supervisor.

Candidates shall be registered for M.Phil.programme during only one session in a year,commencing on the first day of September,subject to the condition that the candidate soregistered, shall be permitted to appear forPart I examination only after completing theminimum period of six months, in the case offull-time registration and twelve months, in thecase of part-time registration.

A candidate applying for registration shalldo so, specifying the broad field of research,which shall normally be one related to the fieldof specialization chosen in his/her PG degree.

5. Guidance :

Every candidate admitted into the M.Phil./Ph.D. Research programme shall be registeredunder a qualified and recognized guide in theDepartment / Institution, where the candidateis admitted for the research programme. Theresearch guide shall guide the candidates,throughout his/her research programme andmonitor his / her progress.

A guide recognized for Ph.D. programme canguide at any point of time not more than 8 Ph.D.candidates & 4 M.Phil. candidates and a guiderecognized for M.Phil. programme can guide atany point of time not more than 4 M.Phil.Candidates.

6.Procedure for Securing Admissionto Research Programmes

Candidates desirous of seeking admission to theabove said Research Programmes offered in theUniversity Departments, Affiliated Colleges and

Recognised Research Institutions should applyfor admission in the prescribed applicationform, to be obtained from the Registrar,Bharathiar University, Coimbatore – 641 046on payment of Rs.250/- for M.Phil and Rs. 300/- for Ph.D. in the form of a Bank of IndiaChallan credited to the General Fund Accountsof Bharathiar University or a Demand Drafton a Nationalised Bank drawn in favour of theRegistrar, Bharathiar University, Payable atCoimbatore, with a requisition indicatingclearly, the Programme (M.Phil. or Ph.D.,) forwhich the application is required.

The candidates before applying are advisedto ascertain the availability of vacancies in theconcerned Departments / Colleges or with theGuide, where the candidates proposes toregister for the Research Programme.

Candidates shall apply for the M.Phil. / Ph.D.programme only after qualifying for theirPost-graduate degree, before the last date,failing which their applications will berejected.

7. How to Apply

The Application consists of two copies:

First Copy: To be submitted by thecandidates to the University. (Incase ofdownloaded application along with the cost ofapplication and Registration Fee of Rs. 250 and300/- for M.Phil. and Ph.D. respectively).

Second Copy: To be sent by the candidatesto the Colleges / University departmentconcerned along with the Xerox copy of theremittance proof of payment of the cost ofapplication and Registration Fee. The Collegeshall make use of the second copy of theapplication for selecting the candidates.Hereafter University will not send applicationsto the concerned colleges / Departments.

THE APPLICATION SHALL BE SENT TO THECOLLEGES / UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENTSWHERE THE CANDIDATE SEEKS ADMISSION.

The applications should be accompaniedby properly attested Photo Copies of thefollowing certificates:

1. Mark / Grade Certificate of thequalifying Post Graduate (PG) course.

2. Provisional / Degree Certificates of theunder Graduate (UG) and Post-Graduate Courses. (PG)

3. Transfer and Conduct Certificate (issuedby the Institution last studied)

4. Community Certificate

5. Service Certificate issued by theEmployer (in the case of candidatesapplying for part-time Programme,specifying the total duration of theservice put in by the candidates in theirorganization)

6. No objection Certificate issued by theHead of the Institution / Employer (inthe case of candidates applying forpart-time Programme)

The applications submitted by candidatesfor getting admission into a particular Institution/ College cannot be transferred to anotherInstitution / College. If the candidate wishes toapply for admission in more than one College /Department, he / she shall submit separateapplications for each College / Department.

The applications submitted for admissionto Ph.D. programme cannot be transferred toM.Phil. Course and Vice-versa.

Once the application submitted to theUniversity / Colleges for a particular session shallnot be considered for subsequent session(s).

Incase, the programme to which applied isnot offered in the concerned Institution, theapplication will be rejected.

1. The eligible candidates will be rankedaccording to the marks secured in thequalifying examinations and personalinterview conducted to assess the aptitudeof the candidate for research and his/heracademic competence and subject tosatisfying the eligibility conditions.

2. The selection committee shall consist of theHOD and eligible guides of the faculty.

3. After the students have been admitted theguides be allotted in the eligible guidesmeeting. The same be intimated and a copybe sent to the Registrar, along with thewaiting list in the specified proforma.

4. The University shall verify the originalssubmitted by the candidates and thecolleges shall be informed to bring the samefor verification on a particular date.

5. The College and departments should alsonotify the existing vacancies in theircommon notice board and departmentnotice boards and publish the same in thewebsite so as to enable the students to applyfor the disciplines of their choice.

6. Depending on the number of vacancies thecandidates will be selected by following thecommunal reservations as prescribed by theGovernment of Tamilnadu i.e.

a. 31% for Open Competition

b. 30% for Backward Classes within this 3.5%for Muslims.

c. 20% for Most Backward Classes andDenotified, tribes.

d. 18% for Scheduled Castes (3% forArunthathiar) and 1% for Scheduled Tribes.

The candidates will be selected foradmission to the Research Programme

based on their academic performance conductedto assess the aptitude of the candidate forresearch and his/her academic competencesubject to satisfying the eligibility conditions.

The candidates selected for admission to theM.Phil./Ph.D. programmes in the UniversityDepartments shall be required to submit theOriginal transfer certificate and conductcertificate, issued by the Institution last studied,statements of marks and Provisional/Degreecertificates of Post Graduate and M.Phil. DegreeCourses. Hence, the candidates are advised toretain with them sufficient number of attestedphotocopies of the certificates, beforesurrendering the originals.

III. Ph.D. Programme

1. Eligibility

Candidates with a minimum of 50% marks inPG degree be permitted to register for M.Phil /Ph.D. (Full time / Part time programmes).Further those who have secured lesser thatn 55%(except SC / ST) of marks and got admitted arespecifically informed that they are not eligiblefor teaching positions as per UGC and StateGovernment Norms.

Admission for Ph.D. programme can be madefour times in a year, i.e., January, April, Julyand October. Candidates should submit theirapplications on or before first working day ofquarter, viz January, April, July and October.

2. REGISTRATION FOR THE Ph.D.

PROGRAMME

A candidate who has qualified for theMaster’s Degree in the faculties of Arts,Sciences, Fine Arts, Commerce, Social Scienceof this University or equivalent thereto is eligibleto register for the Full- Time /Part-Time Ph.D.programme.

a). Full-Time

Full-Time (with or without stipend orfellowship) / Research fellows / ResearchAssistants/Technical Assistants and projectAssistants appointed in the research projectsfunded by recognized agencies / Governmentare also eligible to register for Ph.D. on afulltime basis in the same department providedthey satisfy the eligibility criteria laid in.

b). Part-Time (teacher or non-teacher)

The candidates possessing any one of theabove qualifications and falling under any of thefollowing categories are eligible to register forPh.D. Part-time programme.

a). “A teacher with a minimum two years ofexperience working in the Department of theUniversity or of an affiliated College of thisUniversity / Higher Secondary School / HighSchool / Polytechnic / Colleges affiliated toother universities (in subjects other thanEngineering, Medicine, Law and Agriculturewithin the territorial Jurisdiction of thisuniversity).”

b). Any Chartered Accountant / costAccountant / Company Secretary and otherprofessionals with minimum period of threeyears of experience after obtaining theirprofessional qualification is eligible for Ph.D.registration. The subject for registration maybe the same as that of the professionalqualifications in the case of ACA / AICWA / ACS.The guides may be from the department ofCommerce / Management Studies / Economicsand concerned subjects.

c) For candidate other than a teachercandidate, any permanent staff in aGovernment Office / Private / Public Ltd.Company, a recognized factory / institution /research institution / business with a minimumperiod of three years of administrativeexperience in the relevant job after obtainingthe Master’s degree with a minimum of 50% ofmarks in the qualifying examination (staffincludes Board of Directors, Proprietor andPartner) are eligible for Ph.D. registration in therelevant discipline.

i. Recognized factory means an industrialestablishment and regulated by the factoriesAct.ii. Recognized institution means any institutionregistered with the Registrar of Societies andhas been duly audited by a recognized auditorfor the last three years from the date ofapplication and duly supported by an auditcertificate.iii. Recognized business means a businessorganization duly registered with commercialTax Department and three years standing in theirbusiness.iv. Private / Public Ltd. Company registeredunder the Companies Act.v. If the necognised guides are available in thenon-lab oriented subjects in the affiliatedcolleges the candidates may be registered forthe P.T. programme in the non-lab orientedsubjectsUNDER INDEPENDENT Ph.D.RESEARCH PROGRAMME

Teachers with M.Phil. or equivalentqualification, working in the Departments of thisUniversity or in colleges affiliated to thisUniversity with atleast four years of teaching /research experience after obtaining M.Phil.degree, may register for Ph.D. without a guide,as part-time scholars.

In such cases, for the lab orientedprogrammes if the department to which thecandidate belongs to, is not recognized forresearch by Bharathiar University, the candidateis required to produce a certificate from othersuch recognized departments of the affiliatedcollege/ Institutions indicating clearly that he/she will be permitted to utilize the facilityavailabe there.

However, those registered under thiscategory of independent registration, can optto work under a recognized guide at any stageafter registration, with the prior permission ofthe University and on payment of a ‘statuschange fee’.HOSTEL FEE:Caution Deposit Rs. 7,200/-(Rs. 7,000/- Refundable), (Rs.200/-Establishment Charges)Room rent Rs. 210/- per month, (Subject tochange)

SCHOLARSHIPS / FELLOWSHIPS :

A number of scholarships are available forBC, BC, SC / ST candidates admitted to theM.Phil. / Ph.D. full-time programmes in theUniversity Departments.

A number of fellowships like UniversityResearch Fellowships, Fellowships offered by theUniversity Grants Commission, Council forScientific and Industrial Research, Indian Councilof Social Sciences Research (ICSSR) and JuniorResearch Fellowships and Senior ResearchFellowships are available to the studentsadmitted to the Ph.D. full-time programmes inthe University Departments.

REGULATIONS:

The candidates will be governed by the respective M.Phil. and Ph.D. regulations of the University,amended from time to time.

OTHER AMENITIES:

The Library is well equipped and functions from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Computer centre hasinternet facility and is linked to a Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT). The Health centre and thesports stadium have modern equipments. The University runs hostels, for men and women scholars.There is a Post-Office, a Bank and two Canteens in the Campus. There is also a National ServiceScheme (NSS) which has been functioning effectively.

The University buses ply during morning and evening, on all working days for transporting thestaff and students. The city bus service to the University is also available, and the frequency of thisservice is reasonably good.
