Mphil and Ph.D. Prospectus

The Bharathiar University was established

by the Government of Tamil Nadu in the Year 1982,

under the Bharathiar University Act I of 1981 (Tamil

Nadu University Act I of 1982).

The University was recognized by the U.G.C

for the purpose of the award of grants, in 1985.

The University is a member of the Association of

Indian Universities and the Association of

Commonwealth Universities. It is of an affiliating

type, with jurisdiction over the revenue district

of Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Tirupur and Erode. It has

at present 106 Affiliated Colleges including 93 Arts

and Science Colleges, 1 Air Force Administrative

College, 12 Institutions of Information Science &

Management and 28 Research Institutions.

The University is situated at the foot of

the Maruthamalai Hills about 12 kms from the city

of Coimbatore, in a sprawling campus of around

1000 acres. The atmosphere is quite serene and is idealfor intellectual pursuits. The campus has a numberof architecturally designed buildings, which housethe various Teaching and Research Departments,the Library, the Internet Centre, the AdministrativeOffices, the Hostels and the Canteen.

The University has 13 schools and 34Research Departments on Campus, dedicated toteaching and research, which include theBharathiar School of Management and EntrepreneurDevelopment and the School of Distance Education.All the Departments / Schools are manned by highlyqualified and experienced faculty members.

The University follows Choice Based CreditSystem and semester pattern of instruction for allthe Post – graduate courses. Each semester ishaving a minimum of ninety working days. TheUniversity Examinations are conducted at the endof each semester.

(b) Candidates belonging to the followingcategories are eligible to register for M.Phil.(Part-Time) programme:

i. Any person employed in any concern /organization / institution / R & D Centres /Laboratories situated within the territorialjurisdiction of Bharathiar University orResearch Institutions recognized by BharathiarUniversity with a minimum of 55% of marksin the Master’s degree. Such candidates shallproduce a No-objection certificate from theEmployer or Head of the Institution (in case ofEducational Institutions).

ii. All teachers working in colleges affiliatedto Bharathiar University are eligible.Candidates working as guest lecturers onconsolidated pay are also eligible to pursueM.Phil. (Part-time) programme provided theyproduce an NOC and service certificate fromtheir respective colleges.

iii. Candidates working in colleges affiliated toUniversities other than Bharathiar Universityhave to produce a No objection Certificate andservice certificate from the Head of theInstitution / University.iv. T.C. need not be insisted for admission topart-time M.Phil. / Ph.D. programmes.

Eligibility for M.Phil. / Ph.D. Programme

All candidates should have passed a two-year PG degree course after 3-year Bachelor’s degreecourse and Higher Secondary course of 2-year duration after 10-year SSLC (10+2+3+2) or one yearPre-degree after 11-year SSLC (11+1+3+2) or 10-year SSLC plus 3-year Diploma plus 2- year UGand 2 year PG (10+3+2+2) or four year UG Degree and one year masters degree (10+2+4+1).Candidates who have passed the PG degree examinations with less than 17 years of total durationof study are not eligible for admission to M.Phil/Ph.D. Programme.

Candidates shall be registered for M.Phil. programme for one session only in a year,commencing on the first day of August.

For University departments, colleges and approved research insitutions admissions for Ph.D.programmes can be made two times in a year i.e January and August.

2. DURATIONFULL – TIME:The duration of the M.Phil. Full Timeprogramme shall extend over a period of oneacademic year (12 months) commencing fromAugust 1st .PART – TIME:The duration of the M.Phil. Part-timeprogramme shall extend over a period of twoacademic years commencing from 1st August.Maximum period for completion (includingextension period) of the M.Phil. Programme istwo years in the case of Full-time candidatesand three years in the case of Part-timecandidates.3. COURSE OF STUDYThe course of study for the M.Phil. degreeprogramme shall consist of three written papersunder Part-I and a Dissertation under Part-II ofthe programme.Written Papers (under Part-I)Paper I : Research Methodology(Research Methods of the concerned discipline)Paper II : Research Trends in theconcerned discipline / Advances in theconcerned discipline.Paper III : Special Paper (Pertaining tothe area of specialization chosen by thecandidate under a guide)Dissertation (under Part II)Candidates shall be required to choose aresearch problem in his/her chosen area ofresearch and submit a dissertation incorporatingthe results of his/her investigation, carried outunder the supervision of a recognizedsupervisor.4. REGISTRATION

All candidates who are admitted into theM.Phil. programme (Full-time or Part-time) willbe registered under the supervision ofrecognized supervisors to do research in thechosen topics.Candidates shall be registered for M.Phil.programme for one session only in a year,commencing on the first day of August,subject to the condition that the candidates soregistered, shall be permitted to appear forPart I examination only after completing theminimum period of six months in the case offull-time registration and twelve months, in thecase of part-time registration.

A candidate applying for registration shall doso, specifying the broad field of research, whichshall normally be one related to the field ofspecialization chosen in his/her PG degree.5. Guidance :

Every candidate admitted into the M.Phil./Ph.D. Research programme shall be registeredunder a qualified and recognized guide in theDepartment / Institution, where the candidateis admitted for the research programme. Theresearch guide shall guide the candidates,throughout his/her research programme andmonitor his / her progress.

A maximum of Five candidates be permittedto register under one supervisor at any pointof time in addition to the permitted EIGHTPh.D. candidates.6.Procedure for Admission

The candidates before applying are advisedto ascertain the availability of vacancies in theconcerned Departments / Colleges or with theGuide, where the candidates proposes toregister for the Research Programme.

Candidates shall apply for the M.Phil. /Ph.D. programme only after qualifying fortheir Post-graduate degree, before the lastdate, failing which their applications will berejected.

7. How to Apply

The Application consists of two copies:

First Copy: To be submitted by the candidatesto the University. (Incase of downloadedapplication along with the cost of applicationFee of Rs. 500/- and 600/- for M.Phil. andPh.D. respectively).Second Copy: To be sent by the candidates tothe Colleges / University department concernedalong with the Xerox copy of the remittanceproof of payment of the cost of applicationFee. The College shall make use of the secondcopy of the application for selecting thecandidates. Hereafter University will not sendapplications to the concerned colleges /Departments.

THE APPLICATION SHALL BE SENT TO THECOLLEGES / UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENTSWHERE THE CANDIDATE SEEKS ADMISSION.

The applications should be accompaniedby properly attested Photo Copies of thefollowing certificates:

1. Mark / Grade Certificate of thequalifying Post Graduate (PG) course.

2. Provisional / Degree Certificates of theunder Graduate (UG) and Post-Graduate Courses. (PG)

3. Transfer and Conduct Certificate(issued by the Institution last studied)

4. Community Certificate

5. Service Certificate issued by theEmployer (in the case of candidatesapplying for part-time Programme,specifying the total duration of theservice put in by the candidates in theirorganization)

6. No objection Certificate issued by theHead of the Institution / Employer (inthe case of candidates applying forpart-time Programme)

The applications submitted by candidates forgetting admission into a particular Institution/ College cannot be transferred to anotherInstitution / College. If the candidate wishesto apply for admission in more than one College/ Department, he / she shall submit separateapplications for each College / Department.

The applications submitted for admissionto Ph.D. programme cannot be transferred toM.Phil. Course and Vice-versa.

Once the application submitted to theUniversity / Colleges for a particular sessionshall not be considered for subsequentsession(s).

Incase, the programme to which applied isnot offered in the concerned Institution, theapplication will be rejected.

8. Procedure and Selection for M.PhilAdmission

The following will be the Selection Procedure:

1. The university should issue the notificationin the University website or advertise in thenews papers for M.Phil/Ph.D. admissions.Admissions shall be made through an entrancetest followed by an interview. However, UGC/CSIR(JRF)/SLET/GATE Qualified/Teacherfellowship holders need not appear for entancetest, such candidates shall be directly admittedto the doctoral programmes through interview.The interview committee should be formed withthe following members.

i) Dean of concerned discipline

ii) Head of the Department / Head of theDivision

iii)The recognized guides of the Department/ Division.2. The eligible candidates will be ranked

according to the marks secured in thequalifying examinations and personalinterview conducted to assess the aptitudeof the candidate for research and his/heracademic competence and subject tosatisfying the eligibility conditions.

3. The selection committee shall consist ofthe HOD and eligible guides of the faculty.

4. After the students have been admitted theguides be allotted in the eligible guidesmeeting. The same be intimated and acopy be sent to the Registrar, along withthe waiting list in the specified proforma.

5. The University shall verify the originalssubmitted by the candidates and thecolleges shall be informed to bring the samefor verification on a particular date.

6. The College and departments should alsonotify the existing vacancies in theircommon notice board and departmentnotice boards and publish the same inthe website so as to enable the students

17to apply for the disciplines of their choice.

7. Depending on the number of vacanciesthe candidates will be selected byfollowing the communal reservations asprescribed by the Government ofTamilnadu i.e.

a. 31% for Open Competitionb. 30% for Backward Classes within this 3.5%

for Muslims.c. 20% for Most Backward Classes and

Denotified, tribes.d. 18% for Scheduled Castes (3% for

Arunthathiar) and 1% for ScheduledTribes.The candidates will be selected for

admission to the Research Programme basedon their academic performance conducted toassess the aptitude of the candidate forresearch and his/her academic competencesubject to satisfying the eligibility conditions.

The candidates selected for admission tothe M.Phil./Ph.D. programmes in the Univer-sity Departments shall be required to submitthe Original transfer certificate and conductcertificate, issued by the Institution last stud-ied, statements of marks and Provisional/De-gree certificates of Post Graduate and M.Phil.Degree Courses. Hence, the candidates areadvised to retain with them sufficient numberof attested photocopies of the certificates ,before surrendering the originals.

Procedure and Selection for Ph.D.Programme(Full-Time/Part Time)

A candidate who has qualified for theMaster’s Degree in the faculties of Arts,Sciences, Fine Arts, Commerce, Education,Educational Technology, Social Science andManagement of this University or equivalentthereto. Candidates passing atleast 17 yearsof study under anyone of the categoriesprescribed under Eligibility supra are also eligibleto Register.

a) Full-time scholar (with or without stipend/ fellowship). Research fellows / Researchassistants / Technical assistants / Projectassistants / Project Fellows / Research associates/ appointed in the research projects funded byrecognized agencies / Government / industriesare also eligible to register for Ph.D. on a full-time basis in the same Department providedthey satisfy the eligibility criteria laid in.b) Part-time scholar (teacher or non-teacher)The candidates belonging to any one of thecategories of full time employment as teacher,scientist, research fellow, research assistant,technical assistant and project assistant mayregister at University Departments, AffiliatedColleges, Research Institutions, or R & D Centres/ Laboratories coming under the territorialjurisdiction of Bharathiar University.c) A candidate already holding a Ph.D. degreein a discipline / subject specialization is eligibleto register for a second Ph.D. degree in anotherdiscipline / subject specialization.

The selection procedure noted from pointNo. 8.2 are common to M.Phil/Ph.D.AdmissionFull-time

A candidate having a minimum 55% (5%relaxation for SC/ST candidates in the minimumeligibility) marks in the qualifying examinations.Part-time a) “A teacher working in a Department of the

University or of an affiliated College ofthis University / Higher Secondary School /High School / Polytechnic / Collegesaffiliated to other universities (in subjects

other than Engineering, Medicine, Law andAgriculture)”.

b) Candidate working as a Guest Lecturer /Temporary Faculty at Govt. Colleges and Govt.Aided Colleges in Tamilnadu and Other States.

c) Any Chartered Accountant / CostAccountant / Company Secretary and otherprofessionals with a minimum period of twoyears of experience after obtaining theirprofessional qualification is eligible for Ph.D.registration. The subject for registrationmay be the same as that of the professionalqualifications in the case of ACA / AICWA/ACS. The guides may be from theDepartments of Commerce,Management Studies, Economics orconcerned subjects.

d) For candidate other than a teachercandidate, any permanent staff in aGovernment Office/ Private or Public Ltd.,Company / a recognized factory /institution / research institution /Educational Institution / business who hassuccessfully completed probation and holdsa Master’s degree with a minimum of 50%of marks in the qualifying examination(staffincludes Board of Directors, Proprietor andPartner) are eligible for Ph.D registration inthe relevant discipline.

(i) Recognized factory means an industrialestablishment and regulated by thefactories Act.

(ii) Recognized institution means any institutionregistered with the Registrar of Societiesand has been duly audited by a recognizedauditor for the last three years from thedate of application and duly supported byan audit certificate.

(iii)Recognized business means a businessorganization duly registered withCommercial Tax Department and threeyears standing in their business.

(iv)Private / Public Ltd., Company registeredunder the Companies Act.

Candidates Registered for Ph.D. (Part time)

outside Tamilnadu

Candidates out side Tamilnadu be allowed

to register for Part time Ph.D. subject to

production of NOC from HOD/Head of the

Employer where the candidate is employed. An

e) Transfer Certificate need not be insistedfor admission to part-time M.Phil. / Ph.D.programmes.

Under Independent Registration:

a) Teachers with M.Phil. or equivalentqualification, working in the Departmentsof this University or in colleges affiliated tothis University or Govt. ResearchInsitutions withtin University area withatleast Six years of teaching / researchexperience after obtaining M.Phil. degree(total experience put in BharathiarUniversity and other Universities will betaken into account), may register for Ph.D.without a guide, as part time scholars.

Independent Research Committee consisting ofDean of Research, Dean of the concernedDiscipline and one outside expert appointed bythe Vice-Chancellor should be formed to assessthe candidate for the suitability of independentresearch. However, those registered under thiscategory of independent registration, can optto work under a recognized guide at any stageafter getting approval of the IndependenceResearch COmmittee and University based onvalid reason on payment of a ‘status changefee’.

b) In case of lab oriented programmes, if thedepartment to which the candidate belongsto, is not recognized for research byBharathiar University, the candidate isrequired to produce a certificate from othersuch recognized departments of theaffiliated college/Institutions indicatingclearly that he/she will be permittedto utilize the facility available there.

c) Any requisition for the appointment ofresearch supervisors in case of candidatesunder independent category, aftersubmission of thesis be not entertained.

d) For laboratory subjects candidates underindependent registration shall be includedunder the strength of the recognizedresearch department.

The University Grants Commission hasoffered University Research Fellowship (URF)and the Councial for Scientific and IndustrialResearch (CSIR) and Indian council of SocialSciences Research (ICSSR) are to be offered.Further, Junior Research Fellowships and SeniorResearch Fellowships are available to thescholars admitted in Ph.D. Programme (FullTime) in the University Departments.

The candidates will be governed by the respective M.Phil. and Ph.D. regulations of theUniversity, amended from time to time.

OTHER AMENITIES:

The Library is well equipped and functions from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Computer centre hasinternet facility with 30 Mbps connectivity. The Health centre and the sports stadium have modernequipments. The University runs hostels, for men and women scholars. There is a Post-Office, aBank and two Canteens in the Campus. There is also a National Service Scheme (NSS) which hasbeen functioning effectively.

The University buses ply during morning and evening, on all working days for transportingthe staff and students. The city bus service to the University is also available, and the frequency ofthis service is reasonably good.
