later this year.At Brusselton, Robson wit-nessed some of the work being undertaken by local volunteers to bring Brus-selton Incline back to life.Robson met a few of the volunteers, Alex Tighe – Group Founder, Gerald Slack and John Rottgardt. Anthony Coulls, Senior Curator of Rail Vehicles

at The National Railway Museum was also on hand to speak to Robson.Filming took around one-and-a-half-hours to complete and Robson then invited everyone to the Locomotion museum in Shildon for a drink, where he signed autographs and took photographs with everyone.

Residents in Bishop Auckland can now call in to see their local cops at the town’s hospital, where the beat team now have an office. The new base, situated beside the out-of-hours service on the lower ground floor, has been set up to make the police more accessible to local people and to continue the close working relation-ship between officers and hospital staff. PC Vicky Coxon and PCSO Ian Feldon will both use the office as a base during their regular patrols of the area, although it will not be manned on a daily basis.

PC Coxon said, “This is an excellent facility which allows us to have more contact with the public, while still remaining visible within the community. “We have tea and coffee making facilities and when our door is open we are happy to have a chat and help with any problems you need to discuss.“We are over the moon with the working relationship we have established in the hospital and with security staff. By working together we have already managed to reduce incidents of anti-social behaviour and crime in and around the immedi-ate area.”

College warns 24% cut could hit job chances for thousands

Thousands of people across the North East could lose the chance of retraining for new job opportunities as a result of “drastic” govern-ment cuts. That is the stark warning from college principals in the region, who have united in their opposition to a 24% cut in funding for adult learning for 2015/16 announced by the Skills Funding Agency. The £460m reduction, which follows five years of funding cuts for the furthereducation sector, will result in swathes of adult education courses being removed. They will include employ-ability programmes that are crucial in enabling unemployed adults to access the labour market and in tackling social and economic exclusion.Vocational courses that develop the practical skills demanded by employers will also be affected, in sectors such as engineer-ing, manufacturing, health and social care, and con-struction.This comes at a time when the proportion of over-50s in the workforce is set to rise to a third of the workforce by 2020 (from 27 per cent at the moment) and 50 per cent of workers aged over 55 are proposing to work beyond the state pension age.In an unprecedented move,

principals from colleges across the North East havejoined forces with union leaders to lobby publicly against the swingeing cuts. They have written to MPs asking for questions to be tabled in Parliament and signed a nationwide petition led by the Uni-versity and College Union (UCU) which has thou-sands of signatories. The principals are also asking students and the business community to support the campaign.Natalie Davison, Principal of Bishop Auckland College, said, “How can we improveskills to help North East firms compete in the global

marketplace when adult learning funding has been reduced by 50% in real terms since 2009?“This will have a devastat-ing impact on the commu-nities we serve. It will stopunemployed people being able to access training to help them secure work, and hamper businesses wanting to upskill their workforce in order to enable growth.”Union leaders have reacted furiously to the announce-ment. The UCU described it as “an act of wilful vandalism” that would decimate further educa-tion, while the National Union of Students called it “incredibly damaging”.

United in opposition: Darren Hankey, Principal of Hartle-pool College of Further Education; Natalie Davison, Prin-cipal of Bishop Auckland College; and Suzanne Duncan, Principal of East Durham College. Photo by Barry Pells.

Food festival launches first food masterclassesFoodies of all ages are invited to go back to school at Bishop Auckland Food Festival with the event’s first ever masterclass sessions. From mixing the perfect cocktail to crafting handmade chocolates, this year’s festival will offer the chance to learn new skills under the guidance of some masters of their trade. The sessions will take place in Auckland Castle and Bishop Auckland Town Hall.Kids and grown-ups can get a ‘pizza’ the action at pizza-making masterclasses run by Earth & Fire.Under the guidance of expert tutor Michael Oswald, students will make their own artisan bread, shape and top it and then watch it cook in a wood-fired clay oven. This is the company’s first visit to Bishop Auckland Food Festival but Michael is looking forward to sharing his enthusiasm for good quality food.“I really wanted to be involved in the food festival so was pleased when I was offered the opportunity to run masterclasses. They’re a way of getting people, especially children, inter-ested in food,” he said.“The sessions will be very messy and very floury but a lot of fun and I’ve found that getting children to make their own food is a great way of encourag-ing them to try different things.”Expert chocolatiers Wendy and David Sanderson from Truly Tempting Chocolate will be running two mas-terclasses. The first will show festival-goers how to make a chocolate-covered marshmallow caterpillar, while grown-ups can sign up for lessons in making mouthwatering truffles and caramel-filled chocs.

Durham Gin’s masterclasses are strictly for grown-ups only. Learn about gin flavours, how to make the perfect G&T and the secret to cocktail-making before enjoying the fruits of your labour.Chef and festival regular Richard Fox has joined forces with food festival regulars Black Paw Brewery for a beer tasting master-class. Richard will also be matching beers to char-cuterie and cheese.Black Paw owner Phil Whitfield said, “The food festival seems to grow in stature every year, with people coming from all over so it’s a great showcase for our products. We’ve taken part before but this is the first time we’ve run mas-

terclasses.”The Lakes Distillery will be running whisky, vodka and gin tasting sessions, with visitors being given the chance to hear about the journey from spade to product and learn about the place, the people and the passion that make these spirits. All masterclasses run on both Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th but places should be booked in advance by calling 03000 26 26 26 or emailing [email protected] last between 45 minutes and an hour and cost £4 for materials. For more information, visit www.bishopaucklandfood-festival.co.uk or www.facebook.com/bishfood-

From the Indian Subcontinent to Bishop Auckland

A TV chef and author of a best-selling cook book has been sharing his love of Indian cuisine with catering students in County Durham.Ivor Peters, better known as the Urban Rajah, is joining forces with young chefs from Bishop Auckland College to launch a pop-up restaurant during Bishop Auckland Food Festival. The Urban Rajah’s Great Indian Food Feast will be located in the grounds of Auckland Castle on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th April and will serve up traditional Indian dishes freshly prepared by Ivor and the students.Ivor visited the college this week to meet the students and pass on the recipes they will be cooking on the day.“The students did a bril-liant job and worked really well as a team,” he said. “They worked hard and fast and as a result they managed to put out four different dishes in a rela-

tively quick period of time.“The pop-up restaurant is a great way of engaging local talent. There’s nothing like having a bit of hands-on industry experience. It’s the sharp end of what it feels like to be in a com-mercial environment and it makes the theory come alive.”Each of the dishes on offer at the pop-up restaurant comes with its own story, taken from Ivor’s cook book, which tells of his love affair with curry.“People can expect a food journey of epic propor-tions,” Ivor added. “This isn’t going to be restaurant curry, it’s going to be au-thentic homemade Indian food. The recipes all hail from my cookbook and have been passed down through generations. People will be tasting home-cooked Indian food and tasting history as well.”Ivor will also be delivering a series of cookery demon-strations in the restaurant tent while diners enjoy

their meals. He said, “I can’t wait – I’m really looking forward to it. I’m proud to be part of Bishop Auckland Food Festival. I attended a couple of years ago and am thrilled that the plans we discussed for a pop-up restaurant have come together.“Bishop Auckland has quite a special place in my foodie heart. It was the festival that launched my book as it was the first time that advance copies of it were available so I can’t wait to come back.”The pop-up restaurant will be open from 11am to 4pm on Saturday 11am to 3pm on Sunday. All of the ingredients used to create the dishes are being supplied by Sains-bury’s at Tindale Crescent, which is sponsoring the pop-up restaurant. For more information visit www.BishopAucklandFood-Festival.co.uk. Cockton Hill Infants School held a sponsored run on Tuesday 24th March. In total the children ran or walked the equivalent of the distance between Cockton Hill Infant School and Buckingham Palace. The pupils, aged between 4 and 7 years-old, thor-

oughly enjoyed participat-ing. One of the youngsters commented, “This is the best day of my life!”. Most of the children exceeded their expected target of 24 laps and thor-oughly embraced the chal-lenge, with one year-two

boy even achieving 66 laps! The school’s Head Teacher Mrs Graham and all of the staff participated too. Monies raised will be divided between each class so the children can choose resources which will benefit their educa-tion.

Young people from three European countries are set to come together to take part in a sporting interna-tional challenge. Each year, pupils from County Durham compete against students from the county’s French and Hungarian partner areas, with each country taking a turn to organise a sporting event. This year it’s County Durham’s turn to play host, and St John’s School in Bishop Auckland are taking part in the fun.Events take place over two days later this month, and include ‘activities for all’ at St John’s School and a swimming competition at Woodhouse Close Leisure

Complex. There will also be an informal mini water polo tournament in the adjacent pool followed by ‘It’s a knockout’ style team games in the main pool.Lucy Turzynski, assistant international officer with Durham County Council, said, “It is hoped that the young people involved will be able to find out more about a different part of Europe, practise newly-acquired language skills and create new memories and friendships which will last a lifetime.”The event has been or-ganised by Durham County Council and will see forty-five 13 to 15 year-olds from the county take part.
