From today's featured articleMenominee Tribe v. United States, 391 U.S. 404(1968), was a case in which the Supreme Court ruledthat the Menominee Indian Tribe would keep theirhistorical hunting and shing rights even after thefederal government ceased to recognize the tribe. Itwas a landmark decision in Native American case law.The tribe, led by Menominee Nation Chief Oshkosh
(pictured), had entered into treaties with the United States whichdid not specically state that they retained hunting and shingrights. In 1961, Congress terminated the tribe's federalrecognition, and two years later, three members of the tribe werecharged with violating Wisconsin's hunting laws on formerreservation land. The Indians were acquitted, but when the stateappealed, the Wisconsin Supreme Court held that the tribe nolonger had hunting and shing rights due to the termination action. The tribe sued the United States in the U.S. Court of Claims, whichruled that tribal members retained those rights. Opposite rulings bythe state and federal courts brought the issue to the SupremeCourt, which ruled in the tribe's favor. (Full article...)

Dolomite (shown here with magnesite) is an anhydrous carbonate mineralcomposed of calcium magnesium carbonate. It forms white, tan, gray, or pinkcrystals, which do not react with dilute hydrochloric acid. Termed "stinkingstone" by naturalist Belsazar Hacquet, the mineral gives the smell of petroleumwhen rubbed. It has multiple uses, including as a radiation buer and a catalystfor destruction of tar.Photograph: Didier Descouens
