The Inaugural Literary Translation Prize

in NZ Secondary Schools

The New Zealand Centre for Literary Translation and Wai-te-ata Press at Victoria University of Wellington, in partnership

with the Ministry of Education and the New Zealand Book Council, invite submissions to the inaugural Moving Words

2014.

Reflecting New Zealand’s multi-ethnic and multilingual

society, this competition aims to celebrate literature, languages and cultures in secondary schools and to inspire

and reward excellence in literary translation by secondary-level students.

For this pilot project, we gratefully acknowledge the practical support and advice of the Ministry of Arts, Culture

and Heritage, the Office of Ethnic Affairs, the Holocaust Centre of New Zealand, the Human Rights Commission, the

New Zealand Society of Interpreters and Translators and the Sign Language Interpreters Association of New Zealand.

Terms and Conditions

Entrants must be: • Secondary school pupils (including home-schooled secondary-level

pupils). Entrants must be attending a secondary school, or still receiving home schooling at a secondary school level, at the closing date for submissions to the competition.

• Under 19 years of age as at the closing date.

• New Zealand residents or citizens.

Entries must be:

• Entrants' own work. As well as work submitted by a single student, the competition will accept collaborative work between two or more students. All contributors to an entry must be named and prize money shared equally between them.

• A translation into English, te reo Māori, or New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) of a piece of poetry or prose that was originally composed into a different language.

Translations between English, NZSL, or te reo Māori are accepted (for example, a translation of a Māori prose piece into NZSL or into English).

The original piece of poetry or prose must not be longer than 400 words (or, if entrants are translating from NZSL to English or te reo Māori, the original piece must be no longer than 5 minutes in video form).

The original piece must have been previously published in some form.

Entrants must be able to cite a publication as the source of their

chosen prose or poetry or be able to cite permission from the author.

An online source is acceptable if the piece was published online by

the copyright holder.

• Submitted with a completed competition form (this form will be

available in the entry pack).

• Submitted either with a personal entry fee ($5, for independent/home-

schooled students or those whose school does not wish to enter with

a flat fee) or with a fee paid by the entrant's school ($20) that covers

all entries from that school.

• Submitted as 2 copies of translation + the original work if neither

language used is NZSL; or, as 2 copies of original work or translation

+ a common video file (.mp4, .avi, other formats negotiable) if the

student is translating into or out of New Zealand Sign Language.

• Submitted between the dates of Monday 21 July 2014 and Friday 26

September 2014. If sending your entry through the post, please allow

time for delivery.

They must include two copies each of the translated piece and of the translation. Pieces in NZSL must be submitted as a video file (.avi; .mp4; other formats at the discretion of the organizers only) burned to disk or USB.

• Entries may also be submitted online to www.movingwordsnz.weebly.com or to movingwordsnz@bookcouncil.org.nz

• Entries must be accompanied by an administrative fee of $20 from the entrant’s school, to cover an unlimited quantity of entries from that school, or a fee of $5 paid by an individual entrant.

• Entry fees can be deposited or direct debited to the bank account 06 0501 0193533 02 (New Zealand Book Council). Please use “movingwords” as the reference for your payment, and use your name or the school’s name for the code. There will also be a space on the entry form to duplicate the code you used when making the payment.

Judging:• We will first appoint a panel of language experts to shortlist the top 20

entries, and then a VIP panel to select the top 3 entries, chaired by Man Booker Prize winner Eleanor Catton.

• Translations will be judged on accuracy, literary merit, and on the entrant’s or entrants’ choice of the original piece for thematic and stylistic complexity. The entry pack will include guidelines on translation.

Prizes:

• $1000 will be awarded to the first place winner(s) and their school.

• $ 500 will be awarded to the second place winner(s) and their school.

• $ 250 will be awarded to the third place winner(s) and their school.

• A special prize will be awarded by the Honourable Chris Finlayson to the

best translation from Latin or Greek.

• In each case, half of the prize money is to be awarded to the school

directly and half to the student(s) responsible for the translation.

• Winners who are home-schooled or otherwise unaffiliated with a school

but who are studying at secondary level will receive the same prize

money, with half to be awarded to their primary educator(s).

• These prizes will be awarded to the winners – or, in the case of a

collaborative entry between several students, a representative of the

winners’ team – at a ceremony in Wellington in late 2014 (November or

December date to be arranged). Transport costs will be subsidized; ;

• Additional prizes may be awarded at the discretion of supporters of the

competition.

Other conditions:

• Entries will not be returned to the entrants. Entrants are strongly advised

to keep a copy for themselves.

• Entries may be withdrawn from the competition at the request of the

entrant.

• A single entrant may submit multiple entries. Entrants may not submit multiple translations of the same work into the same language. For

example, it would be acceptable for an entrant to submit two translations

of the same poem in Mandarin, one into te reo Māori and one into

English, but not to submit two variant translations of the same Mandarin poem into English.

• By submitting an entry to the competition, entrants agree that the

decision of the judges is final; no correspondence will be entered into in

this regard.

• By submitting an entry, entrants grant the New Zealand Book Council

and Wai-te-ata Press non-exclusive publishing rights to their submission,

in all territories and all media.

• Entrants are requested not to publish their work elsewhere until the

judging process is complete.

• A publication of winning and distinctive entries will be sent to schools

who submitted the $20 entry fee for their school library. This publication

will also be sent to the competition winners and to individuals who have

paid a $5 fee.
