Moving on from Messalonghi…. Though I cursed my luck at having to spend 10 days in Messalonghi Marina while Jan returned home to Denmark, I take back everything bad I ever said about this strange place because it has a unique landscape of flat lagoon and marsh that grows on you, a quiet beauty and a very lively university town, bustling with packed cafes, interesting shops and faded monuments. In 1826, 9000 inhabitants (many women & children) tried to flee the Turkish occupation. 7000 were slaughtered. The Park of Heroes has some fabulous statues of greek freedom fighters. It is also the home of the English poet,Lord Byron, who came to join the fight but died of a fever within three months. Here they also harvest the finest sea salt from the lagoon- a whole mountain of it. As I was driving from the pension to the marina one morning on Lefkas, I couldn´t believe my eyes…a huge flock of flamingoes floating along on the marsh waters. Bobbing up and down in synchronisation, they all moved as one across the water. Autumn creates the most amazing skies in the Ionian. It is time to move on….down to the Mani….. Tuck´s new pal. A baby donkey with Mum and Dad who live right beside Havana now on land in Prevesa. Dad was rather keen to get in the jeep with us.

Moving on from Messalonghi….

Though I cursed my luck at having to spend 10 days in Messalonghi Marina while Jan

returned home to Denmark, I take back everything bad I ever said about this strange

place because it has a unique landscape of flat lagoon and marsh that grows on you, a

quiet beauty and a very lively university town, bustling with packed cafes, interesting

shops and faded monuments. In 1826, 9000 inhabitants (many women & children)

tried to flee the Turkish occupation. 7000 were slaughtered. The Park of Heroes has

some fabulous statues of greek freedom fighters. It is also the home of the English

poet,Lord Byron, who came to join the fight but died of a fever within three months.

Here they also harvest the finest sea salt from the lagoon- a whole mountain of it.

As I was driving from the pension to the marina one morning on Lefkas, I couldn´t believe my eyes…a huge flock

of flamingoes floating along on the marsh waters. Bobbing up and down in synchronisation, they all moved as

one across the water. Autumn creates the most amazing skies in the Ionian. It is time to move on….down to the

Mani…..

Tuck´s new pal. A baby donkey with Mum and Dad

who live right beside Havana now on land in Prevesa.

Dad was rather keen to get in the jeep with us.
