Michelle Caplan Idea
I really like this way of combining text and imagery. This would be a perfect way to show a personal style with my own thoughts/text written down into a diary.
Old Diary idea
On the diary could be drawings, photos, text etc I am going to do some tests shoots to see if I can use this visual reference in my film. I can use this method to write down my thought, opinion or story of my own from a very personal point of view.
I experimented with using my photos stuck onto the diary and filmed them to see how it would look.

Exhibition-‐ Maritime Museum-‐ Ansel Adams Ansel Adams had a film piece of himself being interviewed about his work. The film was being shown in a separate room from his photography work. He also had some of his books on show for people to look through. I think that my film could accompany my photography work in a final exhibition with the intention of raising awareness. As my film is now going to contain sensitive imagery, it would be a nice idea to have the video covered with a hole/flap for people to look through to view the video. As my work has progressed I t has become apparent that I need my film piece to enhance my book and its sole purpose. As my short film piece is very personal I feel that this will emphasize the work and my own personal message.
Evaluative notes As my work has progressed I feel that I have taken a different direction with the purpose of my work. I always wanted it to be a documentary but now I feel that it needs to have a more personal approach. I have experimented with different techniques visual and in the editing process. I want my work to accompany my photography work in a final exhibition to not only exhibit my work but to raise awareness. My work has now taken on a very personal approach after seeing very disturbing footage of a rhino that had been mutilated. It was nothing like I’d ever seen before. As a reaction to this I wrote down my personal thoughts, which I found that I preferred to use as a voice over as it was a lot stronger and very emotional. While it was still raw I recorded myself reading this as I was still very much upset. I also showed this video to other people and recorded interviewed them after on what they thought about it. I was shocked when I made a full grown man cry.
Here is an example of the book. The book is very factual and is written in a formal documentary style. Therefore it would be nice to keep a variety by combining it in a exhibition with ‘real’ footage that will evoke emotion and a strong reaction from the viewer.
Storyboarding
I have gone through all my photos in order to establish a visual sequence as I have matching footage to most of my photos. Following the changes to my script I need to change some of my shots to match.
Photos
Evaluative notes So I now have a video edited with a combination of my own footage including disturbing imagery to my voice telling my personal story of the rhino. After listening to my recordings of people’s reaction to my footage, I heard some real emotion. The recording of the man speaking in a way that he cannot control his emotion is very striking. I think that this would be good at the beginning of the film piece just as audio and lead into my ‘diary’. What’s next/new ideas New storyboard-‐ Audio Fade into diary with imagery of poached rhino My voice over starts/music fades in Footage of rhino Footage of conservation students Footage of me watching/trying to find the rhino Footage of anti-‐poaching unit Music and imagery fades to my audio End with a quote For the exhibition I plan to edit a longer version/ or another film that can accompany this one. Here is the script for it…….
