Operation E-Cycle HistoryThe Operation E-Cycle Program started in 2010 when Jerry and Barbara Shafran realized that their for-profit clients at Ceeva, Inc., an IT services provider to the Greater Pittsburgh area for 20 years, were frequently upgrading their systems and offering their used equipment to Ceeva. Ceeva would then offer the equipment to non-profits at a significant discount once refurbished. When the Shafrans realized that they could use Ceeva’s professional resources to help the community’s non-profits to obtain equipment they couldn’t otherwise afford, Operation E-Cycle was born as a program of Moving Forward Pittsburgh, Inc. (formerly the National Center for Non-Profit Excellence).

Computer Re-Use vs. Re-Cycling

• Computer RE-CYCLING means taking the machines apart and reselling and disposing of pieces, especially the toxic ones, according to laws.

• $670 is the environmental cost to manufacture a BRAND NEW PC and monitor. (source: Bruce Buckelew, www.otxwest.org)

• Computer RE-USE means wiping off data and reloading the machine with legal software to allow someone else to use the machine.

Operation E-Cycle Case Studies: Franklin Center of Beaver County

Sandra Curry, Education DirectorFranklin Center of Beaver County“We needed laptops for our summer program. At first we were a little skeptical of the concept of free equipment, but we gave it a try and the results have been fabulous. In an environment where non-profits are all being asked to do more with less, this program has saved us tens of thousands of dollars and made our summer programs more enjoyable and valuable for the kids.”

www.franklincenter.orgThe Franklin Center’s mission is to ensure the delivery of human services and supplemental education programs and opportunities for citizens of Beaver County. This organization provides human services and outreach and referral services to low income & unemployed Beaver County residents through programming in three locations: Aliquippa, New Brighton and Beaver Falls.

Sebastian Lacy, Vice President of Human Resources and Administrative Services

“No more handwritten notes and then going to the office to enter the data into the computer system. Obviously this saves time and money and allows our counselors to spend more time in the field and less time entering data at the office. We are thrilled.”

The trainees are gradually building their computer skills and are quite proud of their achievements.”
