There is diegetic sound used at the start of the short film with the teacher saying “ I want you to be able to spell, reveal, pretend and love”. The fact that the teacher says the word love could illustrate to the audience that the short film will be based around some sort of love. This a wide shot and may of purposely been chosen to make it clear to the audience that the women at the front is an important character. The camera pans from the child as you can see in the screenshot below to then showing the teacher at the front. This camera movement may of purposely been chosen to show how the kid acts towards the teacher. The opening scene of the film is set in a class room and mise en scene has been used to separate the pupils from the students, for example the students are wearing a typical school uniform where as the teacher is wearing different clothes to everyone else which in this scenario is a formal jumper and black trousers. Also its clear to the audience that it is set in a school because of the layout of the classroom with the chairs under the desks and the whiteboard at the front of the room. Establishing shot was used in this scene to make it clear to the audience where the scene is being set which is in a classroom. Slow motion was also included in the opening scene and this was used when the camera went to the teacher as it made the teacher stand out and illustrated to the audience that she was going to be the main character and was the character that the boy had the crush on.

There is a title used in this screenshot and it makes it obvious to the audience that the boy is the character who has “the crush” on one of the other characters. Body language has been used to show the audience how the boy feels for example; even though the bell has just gone for the end of the lesson and all the kids have ran out the class this boy is till sitting there with his hand on his face and his eyes solely fixed on his teacher. In the background there is a piano playing at a reasonably slow pace with a high pitch which is non diegetic sound and may of purposely been included to create a romantic atmosphere for the audience. A wide shot has also been used to show the body language of the character which I touched on earlier. There is also no camera movement which could link to the character as he also does not move.

A close up has been used in this scene which shows the ring the boy has given to his teacher and it also shows clearly her putting the ring on which conveys to the audience that the teacher is accepting. Also at this in the short film there is slow paced music used with quite a high pitch which represents the mood of the little boy and that he is overwhelmed that his crush has accepted the ring he brought her. There is also dialogue between the teacher and the boy which goes over the background music. The mise en scene in the clip conveys a romance genre for example; the ring conveys love and marriage. Also the body language conveys romance for example; the way the boy looks at his teacher. There was also continuity editing included which helps the scene flow smoothly so the audience can get a clear idea of what is actually happening.

This is a long shot and may of purposely of been chosen as it shows how young the little boy is and that the crush he has isn’t true love it’s just a crush that a lot of people get at a young age. The Mise en scene shows the age of the boy as he is wearing a child’s coat with a backpack on and has his school uniform underneath which makes the audience question whether it is a true romance or not. There is non diegetic music used which is a guitar and a piano and has a quite a quick pace and creates a happy atmosphere which obviously goes with how the little boy is feeling. The camera stays still as the boy walks towards the camera and as the boy gets closer the audience can see his smile and see how happy he is.

This is a wide shot that shows the boy with his mum and his dad around the dinner table. This shot may have been used to help the audience get an understanding of the setting. Mise en scene is also used to help show the audience where the scene is being set for example; you can see table and chairs with a microwave and an oven which is the typical layout of a kitchen. There is dialogue between the three characters which is diegetic and the young boy says “ What age can a person get married at” with the mum responding in a sarcastic manner saying “urrrm I think its sixteen, why? Have you got some news for us”. Also the body language of the Mother and Father with them looking at each other laughing shows they are not taking it seriously.

This is a close up of the ring and this may of purposely of been chosen to show that it is a different ring to the one the young boy gave his teacher which illustrates to the audience that she has another man which we already know the boy will not be happy about. There is continuity editing which helps the flow of the scene as it shows the teacher with the ring and then the young boy’s facial expressions and how upset he looks. Earlier on in the scene there is extreme wide shot which shows the boy pretending to have a gun which makes the audience question whether this could link to something later on in the scene.

This is a midshot of the boys dad holding a gun which makes the audience wonder why he has a gun which and makes them question whether the dad is a good or bad character. There is no sound with this shot and this might be because the director wants the audience to make there minds up for themselves with no influence .The main Mise en scene is the gun.

Page 4: movie analysis 3

This is a medium close up shot of a boy pointing a gun towards his crush`s boyfriend. The mise en scene in this contradicts each other. For example the boys wearing his school clothes with a hat and a coat however he has a gun in his hand. These are two things you wouldn’t usually associate together which causes to audience to become engaged and want to see more of what is going to happen. Continuity editing is used in this scene as it helps it flow easily and allows the audience too see how each character reacts to certain situations. Also there is only diegetic sound in this scene when the boyfriend says “that’s not real” and then the boy says “yes it is”. This dialogue causes the audience to question whether the gun the boy has is real.

This is a wide shot and this shot may have been used as it shows the dad hiding the gun with the boy sneaking his head around the corner which causes the audience to question whether the boy is going to do something he shouldn’t. The only sound in this clip is diegetic which is the sound of the dad walking across the floor. There is no type of editing in this scene as in the shot that is shown it has everything that the audience needs to see with the boy and father being in shot. Mise en scene is the father wearing a white vest which is the stereotypical older man clothing and there are wardrobes and doors which make it clear to the audience that the scene is being set in the Fathers room.

This is a high angle shot and I feel it is a very clever shot to include as it allows the audience to get a clear picture of what is going on. This image shows that although the boy is only young he has control over the man and I can tell this by the body language with the man holding his hands over his head. This shows that age doesn’t always lead to more power. Once again continuity editing is used as it allows the audience to see how each character reacts to certain dialogue and body actions. Dialogue between the man and the boy also show the audience that the boy is in control for example the man says “Please….please, don’t shoot me”. This shows that the man is begging for his life and is out of control.

This is the final image that I am going to include and this is a long shot and shows that there is no real romance here and it is more just friendship. I get this impression due to the body language of the women with her having her hand on his shoulder where as if they were really in love with each other they would be holding hands. There is no camera movement in this scene however there is some editing as the credits are included at the end. There is also some sound in this scene which is non diegetic and it is a soundtrack. The lyrics say “ when love goes down the drain” which I feel is a good way to summarize the short film as it shows that the so called man the teacher was in love with did not work out as expected.
