An entire village was constructed in the grounds near Strangford Lough. Robin Hood · Dovedale National Nature Reserve (4), Freshwater West (5), Ashridge Estate (18) Three iconic locations were used in the 2009 shoot of Ridley Scott’s epic Robin Hood. At Freshwater West in Pembrokeshire, the huge climatic battle scene was choreographed and shot over many days on this spectacular beach. The cliffs were added later using computer magic. At Dovedale National Nature Reserve in the Derbyshire Peak District, the site hosted 120 horses for a key scene in the film; and the huge estate of Ashridge in Hertfordshire accommodated Robin Hood, standing in as the road to London. The film holds the record for the highest amount of crew and cast on site at one time! A Cock and Bull Story · Felbri Hall, Gardens and Estate This surreal version of the ‘unfilmable’ novel The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, starring Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan, was shot extensively at Felbri Hall, Garden and Estate during Autumn 2004. The production took over most of the house, and part of the garden was dug up to re-create a model version of the Battle of Waterloo. Miss Potter · Osterley Park and House Three scenes of this 2007 film about Beatrix Potter were shot at Osterley Park and House; one in the parkland, one in the Long Gallery (see above) which stood in for a London art gallery and one in the beautiful Robert Adam Entrance Hall. Never Let Me Go · Ham House and Garden Ham House and Garden stood in for the mysterious Hailsham School in this 2011 release. The house and grounds had to appear neglected and overgrown, so for the first time on a filming project the National Trust let the grass and hedges grow unchecked. The Head Gardener was very understanding! Sherlock Holmes · Cliveden Sherlock Holmes met his match, Irene Adler, in a beautiful hotel bedroom - actually the French Dining Room within the luxury hotel at Cliveden. Shot in August 2009, it was the stunning green and gold rococo panelling, originally from an 18th century chateau near Paris, which attracted the film-makers to this room. Visitors to the glorious gardens can see this room on special tours. The Other Boleyn Girl · Knole Two courtyards at the ancient estate of Knole were used to represent scenes of London in the Tudor era; an interior was used for a scene featuring Catherine of Aragon, and horse-riding sequences were recorded in the extensive and timeless parkland. Pride and Prejudice · Basildon Park Basildon Park stood in for Mr Bingley’s mansion Netherfield Park. The house was shut for 6 weeks in the summer of 2004 and given over to the filmmakers to shoot a large number of scenes, including a dance in the ballroom involving 250 extras, and horses and carriages outside! In terms of set design and numbers of cast and extras on site, this was by far the largest and most complicated film shoot the National Trust had hosted to date. Alice in Wonderland · Antony House Tim Burton’s long search for the perfect country house ended here. The gardens’ vista provided the perfect setting for the tree and the mysterious hole that leads to Alice’s great adventures. Even the scenes depicting Alice’s family home in London were shot inside the house. Die Another Day · Holywell Bay Pierce Brosnan as James Bond saves the world again – this time by destroying a secret Korean military base, which was built over 4 weeks on this beach in 2001. Miss Potter · Tarn Hows and Yew Tree Farm As well as being filmed at Osterley Park and House, the Miss Potter crew spent several weeks filming in the Lake District during Spring 2006. Yew Tree Farm stood in for Beatrix’s actual home, Hill Top, which was considered too small and too busy to host filming. In this image you can see the art department painting the façade of the house. Pride and Prejudice · Lyme Park Possibly the most iconic moment in BBC costume drama history was filmed here in 1995 when Mr Darcy takes a dip in the lake. A scene still fondly remembered by Colin Firth fans everywhere! 12 15 17 19 Larkrise to Candleford · Great Chalfield Manor and Garden The BBC’s Larkrise to Candleford has been filmed at Great Chalfield Manor and Garden repeatedly between 2008 and 2010 with a cobbled track on the estate serving as the spot where Thomas the postman falls off his bike! The farmland and farm buildings have also been used for this well-loved TV drama. Easy Virtue · Wimpole Estate Key scenes from Noel Coward’s timeless comedy of manners were filmed at Wimpole in early 2008. The two lovers were caught in a romantic tryst in the folly in the grounds and the exterior of the house formed the backdrop to a comic hunting scene. Cranford · Lacock Village Picturesque Lacock village makes the perfect setting for this BBC dramatisation of Elizabeth Gaskell’s novels. In May 2007 and summer 2009 some of the UK’s finest acting talent were on site for a number of weeks, and many of the residents joined them as extras. 13 16 The Duchess · Kedleston Hall Key sequences for this emotive film were shot at Kedleston Hall in 2007; the property was used for the exteriors and interiors of Althorp and as Devonshire House in London. The film also features the National Trust’s Clandon Park, Osterley Park and House and Basildon Park. The History Boys · Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden The acclaimed drama The History Boys starring Dominic Cooper and James Corden filmed scenes at Fountains Abbey in 2005. The writer and director Alan Bennett is known to be a big fan of this atmospheric World Heritage Site. 7 14 Movie Map 1 2 3 4 5 6 8 9 10 11
