The future Convention Centre in the creative and innovative city of Valenciennes

In 1984, UN-ESCO granted the Mezquita-Cathedral com-plex of the city Heritage of Humanity status, and ten years later further reinforced the uni-versal significance of Cordoba’s historical leg-acy by expanding this title to the entire urban area surrounding La Mezquita. The historic centre is host to a wealth of architecture, with extraordinary remains of the Roman, Moor, and Christian eras of the city. In fact, it is one of the largest historical centres in Europe.

Alhambra, Generalife,

and the AlbaicínFound on two adjacent hilltops, the neighbour-hood of the Albaicín and the Alhambra make up the medieval core of Granada, one that still dominates the modern city. To the east of the fortress and royal residence of the Alhambra, one can find the magnificent gardens of the Generalife, a country home for the emirs who ruled this part of Spain in the 13th and 15th centuries. The Albaicín preserves a wealth of Moorish buildings that effortlessly blend with traditional Andalusian architecture.

CORTIjO ALAMEDAThis large Andalusian hacienda is found on a beautiful plot of land in the Vega de Granada, in the Lorca town of Fuente Vaqueros. It was first property of King Fernando VII before later passing into the hands of the Duke of Wellington.

QUINTA ALEGRE PALACEAt the entrance to the neighbourhood that bears the same name is one of the public villas of Granada, dating from the beginning of the 20th century. This recently-restored com-plex spans two floors, as well as a garden and orchard.

The Chico de los Frailes Olive Grove is made up of 12 hectares of green space, dominated by Mediterranean forest. The country house here is now home to the Centre for Envi-ronmental Education, a duck pond, and an area for picnics and barbecues.

A night-time walk is a highly-recommended activity. The carefully-placed and detailed lighting enhances the main ar-chitectural monuments, in contrast with other areas, illumi-nated by an elegant semi-darkness.

MORETHE ROYAL MONASTERY OF SANTA MARíA DE GUADALUPEThis monastery, located in the city of Guadalupe in the pro-vince of Cáceres, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1993. The site had already been declared a national mo-nument by 1879. Within its walls, one can find examples of the Gothic, Mudejar, Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical styles, spanning the 13th to the 18th centuries. It is a site of great beauty, laden with historical significance, not only due to its admirable architecture, but also thanks to the several museums found within. MeridaThe origins of the Extremaduran city of Me-rida date back to the year 25 BC, when Augus-tus, nearing the end of his campaign in Hispa-nia, founded the colony of Emeritus Augustus, which would later become the capital of the Roman province of Lusitania. The remains of the Roman city, complete and well-preserved, include a large bridge over the Guadiana Riv-er, an amphitheatre, an extensive circus, and an extraordinary water supply system. This archaeological site is an excellent example of the city that was the capital of a grand Roman province during the age of the Empire.


MeridaWHYLocated on the historic Vía de la Plata ( the Silver Route ), the city is a strategic crossroads of the south-east of the penin-sula. Merida occupies a privileged location between Madrid, Lisbon, Seville, and Salamanca. In addition, it is found at the very centre of the autonomous community of Extremadura. The closest airports are located in Badajoz and Seville.

The Guadiana River forms the backbone of the city, a green lung that is worth discovering via a walk along its banks and the lush islands that dot the riverbed. Here it is easy to glimpse wild egrets, cormorants, black-headed gulls, and, of course, white storks.

27 km south of Merida, in a location of unique beauty, the baths known as Aquae were constructed during the era of the Flavia dynasty. One can still enjoy the healing waters of this historic spa.

Churches in the Vall de Boí

The Vall de Boí, in the comarca of Alta Rib-agorza in the province of Lleida, features some of the best examples of Romanesque architec-ture in all of Europe. These buildings include the Churches of Sant Climent y Santa Maria, de Taüll ; Sant Joan, de Boí ; Santa Eulàlia, d’Erill la Vall ; Sant Feliu, de Barruera ; la Nativitat y Sant Quirc, de Durro ; Santa Maria, de Cardet ; and l’Assumpció, de Cóll. These nine churches were built between the 11th and 13th centuries, and are pure and connected examples of the far-reaching cultural exchanges that were tak-ing place in medieval Europe, especially across the mountainous arc of the Pyrenees.


LleidaWHYLleida, located two hours away from the Romanesque sites of Boí-Taüll, is found in one of the most fertile and productive regions of Europe. Rising from the banks of the Segre River, halfway between the mountains and the sea, it is an obliga-tory destination along the routes that connect Spain with the rest of the continent and the Mediterranean.

WHERELA LLOTjALa Llotja is the main convention centre, built over the previ-ous location of the Central Fruit Market. The unique building, one of the most impressive and avant-garde constructions in Lleida, is organized into six floors, two of them underground. It features a main auditorium that seats 1,000, two convention spaces capable of hosting 400 and 200 people, a business cen-tre, a grand hall, and a deck with garden and lookout point.

El Palmeral de Elche

Elche no se entiende sin las palmeras, que configuran un paisaje urbano único desde hace más de 1.000 años. Con más de 200.000 ejemplares, su palmeral es el mayor de Eu-ropa. Aunque contemplado desde cierta dis-tancia puede parecer un bosque, en realidad se trata de una plantación realizada con fi-nes agrarios. Cada una de sus parcelas está flanqueada por alineaciones de estos árboles formando huertos. El origen se remonta al si-glo x, cuando los árabes trasladaron la ciu-dad a su actual emplazamiento y con ella este peculiar sistema de cultivo andalusí.

Elche will be forever associated with the palm tree, a prominent feature of its unique urban landscape for over 1,000 years. With more than 200,000 trees, this palm grove is the largest in Europe. Although from a certain distance it may look like a forest, it is actually a planned plantation carried out for agricultural purpos-es. Each plot of land is flanked by lines of palm trees, forming a grid of orchards. The origin of this phenomenon finds its origins in the 10th century, when the Moors moved the city to its current location, bringing with them this pecu-liar system of cultivation from Al-Andalus.

It is depicted each year on the 14th and 15th of August in the basilica of Santa María de Elche, during the celebration of the festival of the Virgen de la Asunción. The first day of this drama depicts La Vespra, which shows the death of Mary, sur-rounded by the apostles. Prior to the final performance, from the 11th to the 13th of August, there are general rehearsals featuring both La Vespra and La Festa back-to-back. El EscorialThis complex, at the end of the 16th century, was considered the Eighth Wonder of the World. It features unique architecture that varies from Romance Platereque to sober classicism with-out ornamentation giving birth to the so-called “ Herreriano ” style. It was conceived by King Phillip II and created as a multipurpose space that includes a royal palace, basilica, panthe-on, library, and the monastery itself.

Built to serve as a defensive fortress in the Ca-liphate of Cordoba, Cuenca’s medieval fortifi-cations are still in an excellent state of preser-vation. The city of Toledo has been able to preserve an unmatched cultural legacy with origins dat-ing back to the Neolithic, although our first historical conception of Toledo arises in the year 192 BC, when it was conquered by the Roman legions. The city’s selection of buildings is striking in its uniqueness, offering everything from ancient convents and churches to medieval palaces or majestic Renaissance buildings. Toledo can be reached from Madrid via high-speed rail in only 25 minutes.

WHEREEL GRECO CONGRESS PALACEThis building, located in the middle of the historic cen-tre, is the work of architect Rafael Moneo. It is equipped with a 975-seat auditorium, six adjustable meeting rooms with capacities varying from 32 to 140 people, the multi-purpose space Zocodover, VIP features, and another room able to fit up to 300 attendees.

ROjAS THEATREBuilt in 1878 in an Italian style and restored on two oc-casions, this building belongs to the City Government and hosts a variety of cultural activities. Its single room is available for events of up to 472 guests, distributed among the main seating area, the amphitheatres, and the two elevated seating areas.

TAVERA HOSPITALIt is a beautiful example of Spanish Renaissance architec-ture, containing an extraordinary collection of paintings and furniture from Spain’s Golden Age. The courtyards are available to host banquets with up to 600 attendees and gala dinners of up to 1,000.

WHAT2016 is a perfect time to get to know the city through its cuisine, considering that it is Toledo’s turn to be the “ Cu-linary Capital of Spain.” The programme that comes with this status is full of engaging activities.

The El Greco Museum is currently the only one in Spain exclusively dedicated to the painter El Greco and the influ-ence of his work in Toledo at the beginning of the 17th cen-tury. It includes an exhibit dedicated to the II Marqués de la Vega-Inclán, the devoted patron of the institution.

The damascene originated in the Syrian capital in the eighth century, and spread to Toledo at the time of Mus-lim rule, when it became a traditional craft in the city. This craftsmanship is the creation of figures and draw-ings with gold thread placed on steel parts. Several work-shops in the city can be visited.

Los damasquinados tuvieron su origen en la capital siria, Damasco, en el siglo viii, y se extendieron a Toledo en la época del dominio musulmán, cuando se convirtió en un oficio tradicional en la ciudad. Este trabajo de arte-sanía consiste en la creación de figuras y dibujos con hilo de oro colocado sobre piezas de acero. Varios talleres de la ciudad se pueden visitar.

Traditionally known as the “ city of songs and saints,” the medieval historic centre of Ávila is wonderfully well-preserved. The city’s distin-guishing feature is its complete stone wall, the best example of military architecture in the Spanish Romanesque, which stretches 2.5 km in length and contains 87 towers. The city is also home to a large number of valuable Ro-manesque and Gothic churches, as well as houses and stately homes that contribute to the mystical, military aura that surrounds Ávila. UNESCO’s first official recognition was expanded 22 years later, including other churches found outside the walled perimeter.

EL EPISCOPIOThis building, the previous location of the Synod chamber and the Episcopal palace, is the only civil building from the Romanesque period still-preserved in the city. It features an exhibition hall as well as another space for conferences and small business meetings, for up to 150 attendees.

WHATThanks to the many companies devoted to active tourism, a visitor to Ávila is able to enjoy unforgettable routes on horseback through the surrounding towns, such as La Adra-da, Casavieja, Cuevas del Valle, Navarrendonda de Gredos, or Piedralaves.

La Catedral de Santa María de Burgos es un templo católico que a lo largo de la historia ha ido acogiendo las corrientes artísticas de cada época. Aunque su estilo principal es el gótico, en su interior se encuentran motivos decora-tivos renacentistas y barrocos. Las MédulasThis landscape is dotted with rolling red-col-oured hills rising out of the green plain, and illuminated by the incredible effects caused by the sunlight spilling over the land. The re-sult is an incredibly beautiful setting to get to know the country that forced the Romans to search for gold. Las Médulas were the first large open mining sites in all of the Roman Empire. Centuries afterwards, this strikingly unique landscape stands as a monument to the interaction between nature and man.


LeonWHY140 km from the site, one can find the city of Leon, a place where protection of history and cultural heritage have gone hand-in-hand. This includes a rich literary tradition and a continual renewal of the city’s cultural infrastructure.

WHERELEóN AUDITORIUMThis building, with a surface area of 9,000 m 2, contains three

floors, separated into two sections, distinguished by shape and purpose. The main space holds the concert hall, with a capacity of up to 1,200 people. The exhibition hall can be found in the second section.

MULTIPURPOSE BUILDINGAdministrative headquarters of the regional government of Castile-Leon, this structure is one of the most striking build-ings found in the city, featuring a glass façade and a curious circular interior floor plan. It contains both an exhibition hall and an events room.

MUSACLaid out on a single floor that measures 8,000 m 2, the exterior decoration of this contemporary museum is made up of mul-ti-coloured glass, a clear nod to the glass windows of the ca-thedral. It offers a variety of spaces for meetings and events.

WHATEver since the Middle Ages, pilgrims travelling the Cami-no de Santiago ( Way of St. James ) have travelled Leon on foot, crossing it from border to border. Following the yel-low directional signs is perhaps the best way to get to know the influence of these pilgrims on the city’s main monu-ments.

The city government has promoted Leon’s tapas culture, programming various routes that visit multiple restaurants in different neighbourhoods.

La Unesco lo tuvo difícil cuando se planteó distinguir alguno de los excepcionales mo-numentos que pueblan Salamanca. Hasta tal punto fue complicada la elección, que optó por resolverla quedándose con la tota-lidad del casco histórico de la ciudad. Y no era para menos: la Universidad, la maravi-llosa Plaza Mayor, la Casa de las Conchas, la Catedral Vieja y la Nueva, el convento de San Esteban, las Escuelas Mayores… Un te-soro forjado en piedra ancestral y un lujo para los visitantes de un destino siempre animado por su ambiente estudiantil.

It can be found in the area of the bridge and an old mill bearing the same name, where the waters of the river reach a ford for the last time before spilling into the Arribes, allowing the reservoirs to be full even when the waters are at their lowest level. It was a special location chosen by Prehistoric peoples due to being a crossroads and the ability to control and observe the animals that habitually flocked to this watering place.

Ciudad antigua y acueducto de Segovia

El acueducto de Segovia, con sus 818 m de largo, está considerado como la obra de inge-niería civil romana más importante de Espa-ña. También es uno de los monumentos más significativos y mejor conservados de los que dejó esta civilización en la península ibérica. Pero los encantos de la ciudad castellana no acaban ahí. Entre sus numerosas joyas bri-llan especialmente la Catedral, el Alcázar, la antigua Sinagoga Mayor o el monasterio de San Antonio El Real.

of SegoviaThe aqueduct of Segovia, 818 m long, is con-sidered the most important work of Roman civil engineering in Spain. It is also one of the most significant and well-preserved monu-ments left by this civilization in the Iberian Peninsula. However, the charms of this Cas-tilian city do not end there. WHATThe DYC distillery, a national whiskey classic, offers guided tours through its facilities. They can be found on the banks of the Eresma River, very near Segovia, where the water is used in the production of the spirit.

Monasteries of San Millán de Yuso

y de SusoThanks to a variety of historical, artistic, reli-gious, linguistic, and literary reasons, these two buildings belonging to the Rioja village of San Millán de la Cogolla enjoy protection and pres-ervation. The Suso Monastery originated from the caves inhabited by the disciples of San Mil-lán in the 6th century. Successive expansions were made to the space, adopting Visigoth, Mo-zarabe, and Romanesque styles. This monas-tery is home to a collection of manuscripts and codices of tremendous importance, seeds of the modern Spanish language. The Yuso Mon-astery, opened in the 11th century, is notably large. Later restorations combined both Re-naissance and Baroque architecture.


LogroñoWHYThe city of Logroño features high-quality infrastructure and a selection of impressive cultural and culinary attractions, making it an interesting option as a place to host meetings and small or medium-sized events. It is connected via high-way with the rest of Spain, and also contains the simple Ago-ncillo airport, found 15 km from the centre.

Mudéjar architecture

of AragonThe Mudéjar style flourished in Spain from the 12th to the 17th centuries, and is charac-terized by the preservation of Christian ele-ments combined with Arab decorative tech-niques. In 1986, UNESCO officially recognized the towers and Cathedral of Teruel. Fifteen years later, this protection was expanded to other important monuments in Aragón, be-longing to Teruel as well as Catalayud, Cer-vera de la Cañada, Tobed, and Zaragoza, the capital of the region. In the latter, partic-ularly noteworthy is the Aljafería Palace, the tower and Church of San Pablo, and various parts of La Seo.

Tower of HerculesThis is the oldest Roman lighthouse in the world, and the only one remaining in opera-tion. It was built on a rocky hill known as Pun-ta Eiras, around 57 m high. It dominates the northern edge of the peninsula home to the city of A Coruña. Most likely built during the second half of the 1st century by an architect from Coimbra, its light has served as a point of reference for countless mariners. Its impor-tance allowed it to be officially declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1931.


La CoruñaWHYLa Coruña faces the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, and is a dy-namic city that features a variety of unique spaces. Santiago de Compostela is a marvel of worn stone that rises from the green forests and es-tuaries of Galicia, offering an extraordinary architectural legacy in an excellent state of preservation. Originally just a mere place of passage next to a Roman roadway, it became a destination for international pilgrims after the discovery of the tomb of the Apostle James at the beginning of the 9th century. Located in the Cantabrian town of Santillana del Mar, the cave of Altamira is the most fa-mous example of the Paleolithic cave paint-ing that flourished across Europe between 35,000 and 11,000 BC, all the way from the Ural Mountains to the Iberian Peninsula. The good condition of these paintings is due to the depth at which they were found, safely protected from the outside weather. It stands as a masterwork of the human race’s creative instinct, and one of our first true artistic ex-pressions.

WHATThe hippie markets are a classic on the island. They can be found everywhere, but the most famous are those of Punta Araí, Wednesdays in Es Caná and Las Dalias, and Saturdays in San Carlos.

Taking a spin around the island on the back of a paddle surfboard is one of the most original ways to get to know this destination, whenever time and weather permit. These excursions are carried out from Las Salinas, Cala d’Hort, Cala Bassa, Benirrás and Aguas Blancas, and include professional instructors as well as the necessary material.

La sierra de Tramontana vertebra el noroeste de Mallorca, extendiéndose a lo largo de 90 km y con una anchura máxima de 15 km so-bre el territorio de 18 municipios. The Tramontana mountains are the backbone of the north-east of Mallorca, extending along 90 km with a maximum width of 15 km, across the territory of 18 different municipalities. En su interior destacan la puerta del Mirador, la capilla de la Tri-nidad y el Museo Gótico. También hay una capilla decorada por el artista contemporáneo Miquel Barceló. El Castillo de Bellver se levanta en la bahía de Palma en medio de un ex-traordinario bosque de pinos. Fue construido por Jaume II en el siglo XIV y posee un majestuoso patio central.

Y MÁSEl canto dE la sibilaFue una de las dramatizaciones medievales del ciclo de Na-vidad que más arraigaron en el sur de Europa, sobre todo en Mallorca, donde llegó tras la conquista de Jaime I. Este canto litúrgico de melodía gregoriana se representó por toda la península con más o menos continuidad hasta las prohi-biciones surgidas del Concilio de Trento (1545-1563), que no afectaron a Mallorca, y de ahí su singularidad reconocida por la Unesco. MORETHE SONG OF SIBYLThis was one of the most important medieval dramatizations of the Christmas cycle to take root in the south of Europe, es-pecially in Mallorca, where it arrived after the conquest of Jai-me I. This liturgical Gregorian chant was enacted across the peninsula more or less continuously until it was banned as a result of the Council of Trent ( 1545-1563 ). This did not affect Mallorca, hence the unique persistence of the custom, offi-cially recognized by UNESCO. Teide National Park

This park is the oldest among those of the Ca-nary Islands. Its extraordinary landscape is a geological monument that is among the most spectacular in the world, where volcanic cones and streams of lava combine in an impressive display of colours and shapes. New challenges for event managersIn a corporate environment, Meeting Planners face many challenges when it comes to organizing their company events. The recent tough economic situation has forced companies to optimize their human and financial resources. Although Europe appears to be leaving the crisis years behind, the biggest challenge facing event managers is still to plan a successful and cost-effective event.

And in order to control the costs, many time-consuming activities now form part of the daily routine for event man-agers. Compliance policies, for example, are being imple-mented in many industry sectors and this is particularly true in pharmaceutical companies. These compliance rules have also become stricter and more complex meaning that compliance issues require con-stant monitoring yet funds and human resources are limited.

Control is also stricter on budgets and more and more analytics are used to calculate the exact ROI of each event to justify each euro spent. This runs parallel to event activity and means ad-ditional workload for the already busy agenda of event managers. However, monetary control is compulsory and of vital importance for them, not only to keep their budget in check but also to defend the value and rationale of their events before procurement and top management.

When it comes to event content, despite overwork and stretched means, event managers are still being asked to create “ wow ” events with a high level of engagement ; they there-fore need to find new creative solutions to ensure partic-ipants engage and feel they’re taking an active part and influencing the sessions. Sustainability must also be taken into consideration adding more time to preparation and extra monitoring during the event.

Another key challenge comes with new technologies and more particularly, the challenging task of integrating digital solutions into event management.

Where previously they could rely almost completely on others in specific roles to take charge of internal control and marketing issues, event pro-fessionals have recently found the onus is on them to manage all inputs mean-ing they now have to show competence in control and marketing themselves. To all intents and purposes, event managers have taken on the role of project manager for each event they organize.

What emerged as a challenge during the economic crisis has remained. Event managers therefore find themselves in highly stressful situations with packed agendas and having to master tasks previously entrusted to intermediaries. Unsurprisingly they experience serious difficulties in finding a place and time to examine, analyze and think up clever up-to-date solutions and they must con-stantly update their knowledge. * Debora Piovesan supervises Business Travel and
