The campaign goal is to raise $4 million to build a new child development centre in Ladner for Reach to provide more accessible, community-based programs and services to children and youth with special needs. Scotiabank employees raised $86,000 as part of the Scotiabank Bright Future Program in support of the 2012 Scotiabank Bowl for Big Brothers Classic. Altogether, 56 branches and 495 employees joined the campaign to help Big Brothers reach its goal of supporting 1,051 at-risk children in 2012. McQuarrie Hunter LLP donated $50,000 to Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation as part of the firm’s health and welfare program. Part of the donation will go towards a new multipurpose interventional suite, which will provide an expansion of specialized services for the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease, stroke and brain aneurysms. ICBC employees raised more than $34,500 in the company’s annual Jeans Day fundraiser for BC Children’s Hospital. Scotiabank donated $10,000 to Wendy Au, assistant city manager, City of Vancouver and recipient of the YWCA’s Connecting the Community Award, as part of the Scotiabank Bright Future Program. Au chose to direct the donation to the YWCA’s safe and affordable housing programs. Swim Recruiting donated $1,845 to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) as part of its participation in the JDRF Walk. William Rees, professor emeritus at the UBC School of Community and Regional Planning, and Rees’s former doctoral student Mathis Wackernagel won the Blue Planet Award for Sustainability, valued at nearly $645,000 CDN, at the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development. The researchers developed the “ecological footprint” concept and were recognized for advancing the global conversation around human carrying capacity, ecological economics and environmental policy. Purdy’s Chocolates and the Flavelle family received the Vancouver Family Enterprise of the Year Achievement Award for 2012 presented by the Vancouver chapter of the Canadian Association of Family Enterprise. Cornelia Hahn Oberlander , landscape architect, has received an honorary Doctorate of Technology from BCIT. She created the sustainable landscapes at the Robson Square and Law Courts Complex and the Vancouver Public Library.
