lighting of the lamp by Governor,Dr. H R Bhardwaj was followedby a warm welcome bySri N. Ramanuja, Chairmanof the Kendra, a brief on theambit of the conference byShatavadhani Dr. R. Ganeshand the keynote address by Prof V Kannan of Hyderabad.Sri Madhu Pandita Dasa,ISKCON President deliveredhis benedictory address.

In his inaugural talk,Dr. H R Bhardwaj referred tothe lofty ideals enshrined in theVedas adding that they had amessage to the entire world,a message that is invaluable forall time to come.

‘Concept of ReligiousTolerance in the Vedas’ wasthe topic on which the‘Samvada’ began its eight-daydeliberations. The speakerwas Prof. NabanarayanaBandopadhyaya, Director,School of Vedic Studies inRavindra Bharati University,Shantiniketan, Kolkata. It reallyset the tone for the wide-rangingscope of the conference, theprofessor in his scholarly

exposition covering the wholegamut of Vedic lore and itsramifications in both the spiritualand temporal contexts.

RHYTHMIC VEDIC HYMNS:

Accordingly, the subjectsthat came up for consideration inthe 16 sessions, interspersed byrhythmic chanting of vedic hymnsby ritwiks drawn from differentparts of the State, were asdiverse, speakers enrolled fromall over the country giving agood account of their depth ofknowledge and capacity to buildthe theme convincingly.

On the contrary,it was noted that even some ofthe contemporary, so-calledGurukulas are seemingly contentin fostering half baked curriculumimparting merely the textual partof the subject and ignoring theequally vital study of the

accompanying rituals or yajna.It was, however, in the samebreath agreed that a beginninghad been made by way of thismega conference of the Bhavanwith whole-hearted cooperationof ISKCON to atone what isunquestionably a lapse of ourcountrymen in general and theintelligentia in particular.

At the same time, thepositive side of the spectrumcannot go unrecorded. No doubt,in a conference of this magnitudein which some of the best literarybrains in the country have inter-changed their ideas, the output isprodigiuous. Nor a journalisticapproach can do justice to themall. Yet going through some of thesalient points that surfaced in themeet deserves consideration, ashas been done in the followingfew sentences:

not restricted to any one sect,sex, age or class, women andnon-Brahmins not excepted.The very fact that a Muslim,Christian, Sikh were among thelarge number of speakers,vouches for its universalapplicability. Infact, it was feltthat the time has come when theunlimited possibilities of technicaladvancement are fully exploited

to see this treasure-house ofknowledge is made universallyavailable, at the same timecarrying conviction of itsusefulness.
