I have seen many parents at the school this week for parent-teacher interviews. Teachers use this time to update parents on their child’s progress and to highlight specific learning goals aimed at promoting each student’s individual development. If you were unable to attend an interview, please take note of the information regarding your child that was sent home on the parent-teacher interview template and see your child’s teacher if you are unsure of the content.

Congratulations to students who participated in the 2017 Premier’s Reading Challenge. Being able to read is such an essential skill; successful reading affects all areas of learning and life. The teaching of reading is a priority at our school and it is rewarding to see parents encouraging their children to read at home. Well done students and families!

Speaking of families, we hope to see everyone at the school bush dance on Thursday, 14th September. Students have been practising during their music lessons with Mrs Pedley throughout Term 3. This is a great opportunity for our school community to come together and recognise some of the fantastic learning that is happening across our school. It is also a chance to have the night off from cooking, with the tuckshop serving food and drinks from 6pm.

You would have received a Pie Drive form earlier this week. The pies are baked fresh by Tully Hot Bread and by all reports are delicious. Please ask your neighbours, friends and family if they are interested in pies and get as many sales as you can. Funds raised will help to cover the travel and accommodation costs of students in our Science Engineering team who will be competing in the State Opti-Minds Challenge held in Brisbane early next term.

Our full school review, originally planned for Term 1, will be conducted in the last week of this term. All state schools participate in a review every four years administered by the School Improvement Unit. Several parents have nominated to speak with the review team. If you are also interested, please let me know and I will organise a meeting time. At the completion of the three-day process, the review team will present its finding and write a report that identifies areas for future improvement. Everyone will be informed of the finding and a report published on the school website. A plan addressing the findings will also be developed in consultation with Regional Office. Each week on parade, Jeremiah, our Virtues Officer, presents awards to people

who show strong traits and characteristics of the virtue of the week.

We are having a Pie Drive to raise funds for our Opti-minds winners. All monies collected will help cover the

team’s travel and accommodation expenses. We would appreciate your support in assisting our selected students to

participate in this worthwhile event. Order forms were sent home this week. Please return your

order form and correct money to the school office by Thursday, 14th September.

Pies will be available for collection on Tuesday, 3rd October from our school office.

Three Opti-Minds teams participated in the Regional Challenges at James Cook University on Sunday the 20th of August. After extensive preparation and practice with Miss Enright during school lunch breaks, all teams performed admirably. Two of the teams won a Spirit of Opti-Minds award and our Science Engineering team won the right to represent FNQ in the Opti-minds Finals and 20/20 Opti-Vision Youth Forum in Brisbane in October. This team will participate in the Opti-minds Creative Sustainability Challenge. We wish them all the very best in Brisbane. We would like to again thank Miss Enright for her tireless time and commitment in guiding our three teams. Thanks must also be given to Mrs Hunt for attending the day at JCU to help with adjudication.

GROCERY DONATIONS

Please note that we are seeking a donation of one non-perishable grocery item per child for

our Monster Trailer raffle. The buckets to place the item in have been put in each

classroom. Please bring in your item as soon as possible. Thank you for kindly donating to our Fete.

The Year 4 students recently headed south to the Paluma Environmental Education Centre. Whilst there, the students were guided to develop new skills and knowledge in regards

to their own abilities, safety, chores and also the responsibility of caring for our natural environment. The

students had many fantastic experiences and left with fond memories. Everyone worked so well—even when working

outside of their comfort zone. Everyone responded fantastically to the team challenges. It is noticeable in the school environment that there have been new friendships

formed from being at camp and this is great to see. It was an absolute pleasure to take each and every Year 4 student on

this worthwhile camp. With the help of Mr Starkey, Miss Sandra and Mr Zanoletti, we ensured each child had a

wonderful Year 4 camp experience and have created life-long memories.

The Year 5 students headed to Holloways Beach for their camp in

order to experience new activities and to further develop their self esteem.

Children participated in team building activities as well as a boating exercise

where they had to identify different types of birds and spot various marine

animals in the area. Each and everyone of our students challenged themselves on either the three or the

nine metre high rope course. An enjoyable and valuable learning

experience was had by all despite the mosquitoes and sandflies.

We would like to thank Miss Kerryl, Mr Chapman and Mr Kelleher for their

assistance on our camp.

Last week, our small group of Year 6 students had an awesome camp at Holloways Beach EEC. We enjoyed the boating experience and the aquarium session but the most challenging daytime experience was the High Ropes. Every student achieved at least the lower courses (about 4 metres above the ground) but many students conquered the really high (about 12 metres) sections with confidence. We loved the mud experience where we immersed ourselves in slimy oozy black mud, then rolled down the sandy beach to complete the "lamington effect". Each night, we toasted marshmallows at the campfire, had a concert and identified constellations and planets. The Nocturnal Rogaine course (orienteering at night by torchlight) was successfully completed by some groups while others ran out of time, but everyone scored well and it was fun! Mr Neil, Miss Kerryl and the parents on camp were happy that they had two good nights sleep because of our good behaviour. Thanks to the three parents who helped make our camp so successful.
