DISTRICT SANCTIONED WEBSITES - With the age of technology developing at such a rap-id pace with email, webpages, blogs and social media, the District wants to remind parents/guardians to be actively involved in your child’s use of technology. If you do not want your child having access to the internet, you must complete an Opt-Out Form located on the district website. Access enables students to explore thousands of libraries, databases, and Web sites. The District provides students with internet access to further educational goals and objec-tives. The following domains are the only websites sanctioned by the Granite Falls School Dis-trict as official school district sites for the 2019-2020 school year:

FOOD ALLERGIES/FOOD BROUGHT TO SCHOOL BY STUDENTS/PARENTS

Food allergies can be a life-threatening situation. We have several students at our school who have life-threatening food allergies including cinnamon, walnuts, pecans, and peanuts. School staff have been trained to recognize such a reaction and to administer medication (epinephrine) in an emergency. You can help staff and the school by taking advantage of oppor-tunities to learn more about food allergies and by helping your child understand the foods they freely enjoy can be dangerous to others. See the Nutrition Services webpage on the district website for more information.

Guidelines for Food Served at Room Parties or Brought to School by Students/Parents– Many schools have classroom parties for the holidays or other occasions that include refreshments. In addition, students may often bring treats from home to celebrate a birthday or other spe-cial day. Since improperly handled food can be the source of foodborne illness, it is wise to use caution when planning these events. See the Nutrition Services webpage on the district web-site for more information. https://www.gfalls.wednet.edu/departments/nutritional_services/fda_nutrition_guidelines

REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY – Granite Falls School District Policy 3232 outlines information related to parent/student rights in administration of surveys, analysis or evaluations in accordance with the new Federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), formerly Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) legislation, requires school districts to annually report on progress outlining specific information and include state assessment results. The Office of Superintendent of Public In-struction (OSPI) has compiled all the data from all schools in the State of Washington. The reports include:

State Assessment Test Scores (Smarter Balanced, MSP/HSPE, EOC, WA-AIM & WaKIDS)

DEALING WITH DANGEROUS WILDLIFE –

It is always a good time to review safety tips with your children if they should encounter wildlife in the area:

• Stop, don’t run. Pick up small children so they will not run. Stay calm and avoid direct eye contact.

• Never approach the animal but do not take your eyes off the animal or turn your back.

• If you cannot safely move away, try to appear larger than the animal. Do not crouch down or try to hide.

• If the animal displays aggressive behavior, shout, clap your hands, wave your arms or throw rocks.

• If the animal attacks, fight back and try to stay on your feet, do NOT play dead, do NOT run and climb a tree.

• If a bear attack continues, as a last resort, protect yourself by curling into a ball or lying on your stomach and playing dead.

Please tell your child to be alert for any wildlife while waiting for the bus or walking home from bus stops or out in the backyard playing. It is always best to have children walk in pairs or as a group, re-gardless of wildlife. It is also important to discourage students from walking or cutting through wood-ed areas to get to school or home for overall safety, not just due to the wildlife issue. Please review these safety tips with your children. The Department of Fish and Wildlife has developed information specific to dangerous wildlife and what to do, and not do, if you encounter wildlife. Report wildlife en-counters to the Department of Fish and Wildlife during regular business hours call 425.775.1311 or af-ter hours call 911.

SERVICES FOR HIGHLY CAPABLE STUDENTS

Students may be referred by parents, peers and members of the community to qualify for the Dis-trict’s Highly Capable program. Those referring will complete a behavioral characteristics questionnaire and teachers will provide information that includes classroom performance and general achievement lev-els. The District will screen each of those referred using reading, cognitive and math measures to iden-tify students who qualify for further assessment. Prior to conducting the assessment, the principal or designee shall obtain written parental permission. Referrals identified through the screening process will be assessed using multiple criteria from a variety of sources and data, including tests that measure cognitive ability, academic achievement and evidence of exceptional creativity. Test results shall be recorded in the student’s cumulative file.

The students selected for participation in the program will be determined by a multidisciplinary com-mittee which includes a classroom teacher or if possible, a highly capable teacher, the program direc-tor, a psychologist or other individual who can interpret cognitive and achievement test results, and other professionals as deemed desirable. The multidisciplinary committee will review data of nominated students. They will select those students who meet the criteria and would benefit the most from the program. The District will:

Notify the parents of those students who have been selected. Parents shall receive a full expla-nation of the procedures for identification, program options and the appeal process.

Obtain parental permission place identified students in the program before any special services and programs are provided to the student.

The Highly Capable Program is accepting referrals! Please contact the Director of Curricu-lum, Instruction & Assessment, Karin Manns, for more information at 360.691.7717.

What’s going on at Monte Cristo Elementary?

Welcome to a new thing that’s in the newsletter. I will be writing about things that are happening in our school. Almost like a newspaper. It’s some random stuff. So for this month’s little article I will be interviewing two teachers. Including Mrs. Davis 3rd grade, and Ms. Shannon in ECEAP.

Ms. Shannon is setting up the classroom with her new lead teacher Ms. Baker. They are also doing home visits, which she says is quote ”Our way to get to know the students and families before the school year. ”Ms. Baker is setting up lesson plans, and is making a family wall. One thing new this year there doing is the kids are going to be very hands on with everything. For instance they are going to be doing some science and cooking.

On the other hand Mrs. Davis says they are getting into routine and making relationships throughout the class. She also says they are going to be doing some different stuff in ELA than last year.

That’s all I have for this month, but next month I’ll have something different.

- Sophie P. grade 4 Monte Cristo Student Reporter

We have the fortunate opportunity to provide a proactive dental services to interested Monte Cristo Families. Please visit their web site www.BestDentalHelp.com to get a snap shot of our program.

They will be here to visit the school October 7, 9,10 and 11.

Access to oral health care and good oral health habits are just a couple of strategies to help our students be successful in the 2019-2020 school year!

Fortunately, we have the privilege of hosting Best Dental Help and their mobile dental clinic. Best Dental Help is a nonprofit organization that offers free preventative dental services to youth in schools. During the week of October 7th a team of licensed dentists and dental hygien-ists will provide preventative services to students who have prior parental consent. These ser-vices include dental screenings, fluoride treatments, cleanings, sealants, and dental referrals. Didn’t get a chance to turn in a consent form? No problem! Consent forms are still available at the front desk with Ms. Beth or Ms. Toni. Whether your child has a regular dentist or not, con-sider letting them participate in this fun and unique dental experience.

Our school participates in monthly emergency drills. This month we will be participating in the National Shake Out Drill Event on October 17 at 10:17a.m. as a school district.

Visit the National Shake Out Drill Event website for more resources and information. https://www.shakeout.org/washington/howtoparticipate
