    FrameSize

    TogetthemostenjoymentfromridingyourMountainTrike,selectingthecorrectframesize

    adjustmentisimportant.TheMountainTrikeseatbackresthasthreesettings,Small,Medium

    andLarge,dependingonyourarmlength.YourMountainTrikeDealerwilladviseyouonthe

    correctseatingpositionforyou.

    CAUTION RidingaMountainTrikethatdoesnotfityoucouldstrainmuscles,cause

    fatigueorresultinlimitedoperationofthecontrolswhichcouldcauseyoutolosecontrol

    andfall.

    comfortably

    reach

    Theabilitytousethebrakingsystemcorrectlyisfundamentaltosafeoperation.Theefficiencyof

    theleverdriveisalsodependentonchoosingtherightsizewiththerightamountofreach.Failure

    todosowillresultinincreasedlevelsoffatigueandpoorperformance.Foradviceonsizingand

    setuppleasecontactyourMountainTrikeDealer.

    MountainTrikeshavebrakeleverswhichcanbeadjustedforreach.Ifyouhavesmallhandsor

    findit

    difficult

    to

    squeeze

    the

    brake

    levers,

    your

    dealer

    can

    adjust

    the

    reach

    within

    the

    range

    providedbythebrakemanufacturer.

    WARNING Theshorterthebrakeleverreach,themorecriticalitistohavecorrectly

    adjustedbrakessothatfullbrakingpowercanbeappliedwithintheavailablebrakelever

    travel.Ifthebrakelevertravelisinsufficienttoapplyfullbrakingpower,itcanresultin

    lossofcontrol,whichmayresultinseriousinjuryordeath.

    TheMountainTrikeisdesignedinsuchawaythat,whenfolded,itwillfitintothebackofacarfor

    easytransportorrequireaslittlespaceaspossibleforstorage.Ifhoweverthespaceavailableis

    severelyrestricted,furtherdisassemblyispossible,separatingsimplyintothreedistinctmodules:

    SeatFolding

    ForefficientstowingoftheMountainTrikefortransportorstorage,removetheseatcushionand

    theseatbackfoldsdownflatagainstthebase.Tofoldtheseatbackdown,pullthecordjoining

    thetwolockingpinsandpushseatforward.Torestoretheseattoitsuprightposition,lifttheseat

    backwhilst

    pulling

    the

    cord,

    allowing

    the

    locking

    pins

    to

    retract.

    Once

    in

    the

    upright

    position,

    releasethecordandthelockingpinswillspringoutintotheholesintheframe.

    CAUTION EnsurethelockingpinsareBOTHfullyengagedintheholesintheframebefore

    riding.Failuretodosocouldresultintheseatbackbecomingunstablesuchthattheuser

    couldlosecontrolandfall.

    FoldingtheRearWheel

    Liketheseat,therearwheelcanalsobefoldedaway.Thisisdonebysimplyreleasingtherear

    shockabsorber

    from

    the

    rear

    swingarm

    as

    shown

    below.

    Once

    folded

    the

    rear

    wheel

    can

    be

    held

    inplacewithaVelcrostrapunderneaththeseatbase.

    UsingtheQuickRelease(QR)Lever,locatedattheconnectionbetweentherearshockabsorber

    andtherearswingarm,therearshockabsorbercanbeseparatedfromtheRearSwingArm,

    allowingtherearwheelandswingarmtofoldunderneaththeseat.QRleversaredesignedsuch

    thatreasonablehand/fingerstrengthissufficienttoprovidetherequiredcompressionforceupon

    flippingthe

    lever

    closed.

    If

    the

    lever

    flips

    with

    little

    or

    no

    resistance,

    then

    the

    adjusting

    nut

    will

    needtighteninguntiltheleverflipswithenoughresistancetoprovideadequatecompression.

    WARNING ItisimportantthattheQRleversaresettotherightcompressionforce,

    failureto

    do

    so

    could

    result

    in

    the

    rear

    shock

    becoming

    loose

    and

    in

    aworst

    case

    scenario,

    detachingduringaridecausingtheridertolosecontrolandfall.

    WARNING ThefullforceoftheQRcamactionisneededtoclamptherearshock

    absorbersecurely.Tofastensecurely,holdtheQRleverintheopenposition,asindicated

    instep3intheseconddiagramabove,andtightentheadjusternutuntilitistightbefore

    closingtheQRlever.

    DriveModuleRemoval

    Ifseverespacerestrictionsexist,itispossibletosavespaceanddisassembletheMountainTrike

    intoitsthreemainsubassembliesormodules.

    TheleveroperateddrivesystemontheMountainTrikerequiresthattheentiredrivemoduleis

    removedasasinglepieceincludingthewheel,drivesystem,suspension,leverandthebrake.

    PleasetakeamomenttofamiliarizeyourselfwiththefeaturesandpartnamesoftheTriketo

    preparefor

    the

    following

    section.

    If

    Eachdrivemoduleisattachedusingafourboltclampatthemainpivotandasingleboltthrough

    theuppershockmount,shown(upsidedown)belowandlabelledinthepreviousdiagram.These

    boltsareremovedusingthe5mmallenkeyprovided.

    TheDriveModuleisheldinplacebythefourboltsclampingthemainpivot.Theamountof

    clampingforceiscontrolledbythetorqueontheboltssoitisimportanttoensuretheboltsare

    tightenedevenlyandinsequencetoavoiddamagetotheclampandtoensurethemoduleis

    attachedsecurely.

    Therecommendedtorquefortheclampboltsis89Nm(7080inlb).

    WARNING ItisimportantthattheClampBoltsaretightenedcorrectlysuchthatthey

    applytherightcompressionforce.Failuretodosocouldresultinadrivemodule

    becominglooseandinaworstcasescenario,detachingduringaridecausingtheriderto

    losecontrolandfall.

    CAUTION AlwaystakecarewheninstallingortakingouttheClampBoltsinordertoavoid

    potentialpinching

    or

    crushing

    of

    your

    hands

    in

    the

    clamping

    zones.

    RemovalofRearWheelSteeringCableAttachment

    WhenattachingorremovingtheDriveModules,considerationmustbegiventotheconnectionof

    thetwosteeringcablestotherearwheel.TheSteeringCableAttachmentmustberemovedwith

    theDriveModulebypressingthespringloadedbuttonthatengagestheSteeringCable

    Attachmentonto

    the

    rear

    wheel

    fork.

    Once

    the

    button

    on

    the

    side

    is

    depressed

    the

    Steering

    Cable

    AttachmentliftsoffandcanbestowedwiththeDriveModule.

    2.0 RidingInstructions

    ThemethodofusingaMountainTrikeisquiteunlikeanyotherwheelchairyoumayhaveused

    before.Thepropulsionandcontrolsystemsaredesignedtobesimpletouseandintuitiveand

    givetheriderunsurpassedlevelsforrideandhandlingperformance.However,itmaytakeafew

    momentstobecomefamiliarwiththecontrolsuponyourfirsttry.

    Pleasechooseasmoothandlevelpieceofgroundthatisclearofobstructionsandcontains

    sufficientspacewhenridingyourTrikeforthefirsttime.

    Areasthatcontainroughorsteepterrain,openwater,manoeuvringvehiclesorlargeamountsof

    pedestriantrafficarenotrecommended.

    Note:Always

    keep

    at

    least

    one

    or

    two

    fingers

    resting

    on

    the

    brakes

    at

    all

    times

    when

    riding

    andleanintothecornersasyouturn,leanleftwhenturningleft,leanrightwhenturningright.

    2.1 PreRideMechanicalSafetyChecks

    BeforeridingyourMountainTrike,itisimperativethatyoumaketheappropriatesafetychecksto

    ensurethattheTrikeisfittoride.

    Firstmakesurethatthemodulesarecorrectlyattached,theDriveModuleClampBoltsaretightandalltheQRleversareclosedtight.PaycloseattentiontothedrivemoduleClamp

    BoltsandtherearshockabsorberQRlever.

    MakesuretheRearWheelSteeringCableAttachmentiscorrectlyattachedandcentred,andthesteeringcablesaresecuredcorrectly.

    Checkbothlockingpinsontheseatbackareengagedandtheseatisnotfreetoswingorfold.

    Ensurethatfootrestlockingpinsarecorrectlyengagedsothatitisnotfreetomove.Makeathoroughvisualinspectionfordamagedpartsoranysectionsthatshowexcessivewearor

    exhibitunintended

    movement

    or

    looseness.

    CheckalloftheboltsthatconnectthepartsoftheTriketogether.ForadviceontighteningboltsseemaintenanceSection3:Service.

    Checkthespokesofthewheels,theyshouldallbeofuniformtensionandnoneofthespokesoradjustingnipplesshouldbeloose.Foradvicecheckingwheelspokesseemaintenance

    Section4:Service

    Checkforunintendedmovementinthewheelbearingsbyliftingeachwheeloffthegroundslightly,

    and

    holding

    the

    top

    of

    the

    wheel,

    try

    to

    wiggle

    it

    side

    to

    side.

    There

    should

    be

    no

    sidewaysmovementorknockingfelt.

    Dothesameattherearwheel.Ensurethereisnounintendedmovementineithertherearwheelbearingsorthesteeringbearings.

    Checkthedriveleversforsidewaysunintendedmovement. ChecktheDriveModulechains,theyshouldbetightwithnoslackorsaggingevident. Checktheoperationofthebrakesandsteering. CheckHydraulicbrakehoseforphysicaldamageandleakage.Ifthehoseisdamageddonot

    rideyourMountainTrikeuntilithasbeenrepairedbyyourMountainTrikedealer

    Ifthewheels,SteeringHandle,rearwheelsteeringcableattachmentordriveleverbearings

    appearloose,orifyoudiscoverthatanythingisnotasitshouldbe,donotridetheTrikeand

    consultyourMountainTrikedealer.

    Suspension

    ThereisanindividualshockabsorberforeachwheeloftheTrike.Theshockabsorberunitshave

    beenfactoryset.(Therearehoweverseveraladjustmentsthatcanbemadetosuitpersonal

    preference).YourMountainTrikedealercanhelpyousetthesuspensionforyouneeds.

    TyrePressure

    Checkthatthetyrepressuresareevenandaresuitedtotheterrainandthetypeofridingbeing

    undertaken.Therangeofacceptabletyrepressuresisprintedonthetyre,dependingonthe

    manufacturersspecification.Recommendedtyrepressuresfordifferentridingconditions:

    Wetmud,wetgrass,gravel 20 25psi (1.38 1.72bar) Drydirt,drygrass 25 35psi (1.72 2.41bar) Wetstreet 30 35psi (2.07 2.41bar) Drystreet 35 40psi (2.41 2.76bar)

    WARNING Failuretoridewiththeappropriatetyrepressurescanincreasetheriskor

    punctures,damagetotheTrikeorcouldpossiblecausetheridertolosecontrolandfall.

    2.2 Transferringinandout

    DuetothepresenceoftheextrafeaturesandsystemsonaMountainTrike,specialcaremustbe

    pullouttheengagementhandleandtwist90degreestolockitinitsdisengagedposition.Once

    youhavetransferredandarehappyintheMountainTrike,itistimetoengagethedrivelevers

    andreleasetheparkingbrake,readytopropeltheTrike.

    Eachdriveleverengagesseparately.Whendisengaged,thedriveleversaretotallydecoupled

    fromthe

    drive

    system

    and

    the

    levers

    and

    are

    free

    to

    move

    until

    they

    hit

    their

    end

    stops.

    Similarly,

    thewheelsarefreetorollifunobstructed.Toengagethedrive,keeptheparkingbrakeon,and

    engageoneleveratatime.Donotreleasetheparkingbrakeuntildriveisengagedandyouare

    readytorideoff.

    Takeuptheleftlever,andwiththeleverpositionedslightlyforwardofuprightcentre,twistthe

    engagementhandleandpushthedriveleverforwardsuntiltheEngagementHandlesprings

    downwardsandthepinseatsintooneoftheholesintheDriveRing.Theleftdrivelevershould

    nowstayupandready,leaningslightlyforward.Repeatfortherighthandside.Thedrivelevers

    arenowengagedandreadytouse.EnsuretheEngagementHandleisfullydownandsecurely

    2.5 ReverseDrive

    Tomove

    Trike

    backwards

    when

    on

    flat

    ground,

    first

    the

    steering

    straight,

    disengage

    thedriveonbothleversandlaythemintheirrestingposition.Thenpushonthewheels,asifthe

    Trikewereastandardwheelchair,topropelbackwards.

    Ifreversingdownaslope,ensurethesteeringisstraightandapplytheparkingbrakes.Then

    disengagethedriveonbothleversandwhilstholdingthebrakesfirmlyon,releasetheparking

    brakesandgentlyreleasethebrakeleverstorollbackwardsinaslowandcontrolledmanner.

    Steeringisachievedbypointingthesteeringhandleinthedirectionthatyouwanttogo,turnit

    lefttogoleftandrighttogoright.Thisturnstherearwheelliketherudderofaboat.Sounds

    simple?Itis,butitcantakeafewmomentstogetusedto.

    PointingtheSteeringHandleleftorrightchangestheangleoftherearwheel,affectingaturn.

    TheSteeringHandlepositiondictatesthepositionoftherearwheelatalltimes,sobearthisin

    mind.IftheSteeringHandleisntstraight,i.e.inlinewiththerestofthedrivelever,youwontgo

    inastraightline.

    Likemanyvehicles,anysteeringinputmustbecombinedwithspeedordrivetoaffectaturn.You

    willoftenneedtopushoneorbothofthedriveleverswhilstpointingandholdingtheSteering

    Handle

    in

    the

    desired

    direction.

    This

    can

    take

    some

    practice

    before

    it

    becomes

    smooth.

    ItisalsorecommendedtopracticeturningandgetafeelfortheturningcircleoftheTrikeinaflat

    andsmoothareathatsfreeofobstructionsbeforemovingontomorechallengingterrainorbusy

    orconfinedspaces.

    Itisimportanttoconsideryourspeedwhenattemptingturns.Atlowspeed,tightturnswiththe

    handleatfulllockarepossibleallowingtheTriketoturninitsownwidth.Howeverathigher

    speeds,itisbestonlytomakegradualturnswithsmallamountsofsteeringlockassuddentight

    turnsat

    speed

    increase

    the

    risk

    that

    you

    may

    loose

    control

    and

    fall.

    MountainTrikescomeequippedwithtwohighspecificationmountainbikehydraulicdiscbrakes.

    Theseprovideanunsurpassedlevelofbrakingpowerandcontrol.Thebrakesworkonthetwo

    drivenwheelsandareavailableineitherindependent(meaningthateachwheelhasitsownbrake

    lever)or

    combined

    (meaning

    asingle

    brake

    lever

    operates

    both

    wheels

    at

    the

    same

    time).

    Onlyverygentlepressureonthebrakeleverisrequiredtobeginbraking.Thereisenoughpower

    inthebrakestocontrolspeedwhilstdescendingandholdtheTrikestillonslopeswhilst

    ascending.Toprovidesmallamountsofbrakingforcetocheckspeed,onlygentlepressureis

    required.Forindependentbrakesitisalsoimportanttoapplyforceevenlytoeachbrakeleverso

    thateachwheelisexperiencingthesameamountofforce,otherwiseyoucouldveertotheside.

    mayhelpridersfeelmoresecureintheeventoftipping.

    2.8 HillandKerbClimbing

    Thefeatures

    of

    the

    Trike

    allow

    the

    rider

    to

    climb

    slopes

    that

    would

    be

    very

    difficult

    to

    climb

    in

    any

    otherwheelchair.Climbingcanbethoughtofasanadvancedridingtechniqueandshouldonlybe

    attemptedonceagoodlevelofallroundcontrolhasbeenachieved.

    Beforeattemptingtoclimbanysurface,checkthoroughlythatitwillbepossibletogetbackdown

    safely.

    Itisrecommendedthattheclimbingtechniqueispracticedonflatorverygentlyinclinedsurfaces

    beforeclimbinganysteeperterrain.

    traverseatananglethiscancauselossoftraction.

    Oncereadyatthefootoftheclimb,makeasmooth,evenforwardpushonthedrivelevers,both

    leversat

    the

    same

    time.

    Once

    the

    levers

    are

    pushed

    forward

    as

    far

    as

    is

    comfortable,

    apply

    both

    brakesfirmly.Withthebrakesstillapplied,pulltheleversback,again,onlyasfarasis

    comfortable.Withthebrakesstillapplied,putasmallamountofforwardpressureonthedrive

    leversuntilyoufeeltheresistanceofthebrakes,thengentlyremovepressurefromthebrake

    leversandpushthroughwiththedriveleverstocontinueclimbing.OncetheTrikehasreacheda

    standstill,reapplythebrakes,pullthedriveleversbackandpushagain.

    Continuethisactionofpushing,brakingandpullingback,thenpushingagain,untilyouhave

    crestedtheslope.Ifenoughforwardmomentumisachievedbetweenpushes,itmaynotbe

    necessarytoapplythebrakes.

    YouwillnoticethatittakesverylittleefforttoholdtheTrikestillonthebrakeswhilepullingthe

    driveleversback.Youcanwaitaslongasyouneedtobetweenpushes,providedthebrakesare

    stillapplied.

    WARNING Ridingonsteepterraincanbeunforgivingandincreasestheriskoftherider

    losingcontrolandfalling.

    CAUTION Whenclimbingakerborsimilarobstaclealwaysapproachitheadonand

    ensurethatthesteeringisstraightuntiltherearwheelhassuccessfullytraversedthe

    obstacle.Turningbeforetherearwheelhaspassedupandovertheobstaclemayresultin

    youbecomingstuck.

    2.9 DescendingSlopes

    Descendingrequirestheuseofthesteeringandbrakingsystems,butcanalsorequireinputfrom

    thedrive

    system.

    Itisextremelyimportanttocheckthesuitabilityofanyterrainconsideredfordescendingbefore

    attemptingtorideit.Ifforanyreasonyouareunsure,donotrideit,findanalternativeway

    round.

    Themostimportantaspectofdescendingisusingthebrakestocontrolspeed.Featheringor

    Modulatingthebrakes,usingfinelycontrolledpressureonthebrakeleverisrequiredtokeep

    thewheelsrollingwhilstprovidingtherequiredbrakingforcetomaintaincontrollablespeed.Too

    littlebrakingforceandspeedwillincreaseuntilcontrolislost,toomuchbrakingforcecancause

    tippingwhichcouldleadtoafall.

    Whilstdescending,itwilloftenbenecessarytousetheSteeringHandletomakeadjustmentsto

    yourcourseasyougo.ThiscanbeoneofthemostenjoyableaspectsofridingtheTrike.No

    brakingisrequiredtosteertheTrike.Rather,thebrakingsystemisusedtocontrolthespeedofa

    descent,andthesteeringsystemisusedtocontrolthedirection.Bothofthesetechniquesmust

    bepracticed

    and

    the

    rider

    must

    be

    confident

    doing

    both

    concurrently

    before

    any

    attempt

    at

    descendingismade.

    TheantitipwheelsonthefootrestlimittheforwardstipoftheTrikeshouldthebrakesbeapplied

    toosharply,orifthegradientistoosteep.However,itisalwaysrecommendedtokeeptherear

    wheelincontactwiththegroundtoprovideoptimalcontrol,soavoidprolongeddescending

    whilebalancedontheantitipwheels.

    3.0Safety

    thumbandsqueezetogether,theyshouldfeeltightandeachpairshouldfeelroughlyequal.If

    thereisanyrimdamageorsignificantlyloosespokes,seektheadviceofyourMountainTrike

    dealerastheymayneedtoretensionthespokesorrebuildthewheel.

    Checkthetyresforanycuts,damage,excessivetreadwearorembeddedobjects.Ifanydamage

    isfound,thetyresshouldbereplaced.

    Checkthesuspensionisoperatingcorrectlybypushingdownontheseatorframe,theshock

    SwingtheSteeringHandlefromsidetoside,itshouldfeelsmoothandpositivewithoutlooseness

    orbacklash.Withyourhand,squeezethetwosteeringcablestogetherattheSteeringUnit.There

    shouldbelittleornoslackinthecablestoensuregoodsteeringresponse.Ifloosenessisfelt,the

    cableswill

    need

    adjusting

    on

    the

    barrel

    adjusters

    at

    each

    end,

    or

    by

    pulling

    more

    cable

    through

    theclamp.

    IfthemotionoftheSteeringHandlefeels

    roughorittakesexcessiveforcetomove

    thelever,thecablescouldbefrayedor

    damagedandwillneedreplacing.

    Check

    the

    Steering

    Handle

    for

    play

    at

    the

    pivotjoint,ifthereisloosenessinthe

    forwards/backwardsdirection,checkthe

    nutistightandseektheadviceofyour

    MountainTrikedealerifthelooseness

    persists.

    CheckthepositionoftheSteeringHandle

    correspondstothecorrectpositionof

    therear

    wheel.

    When

    the

    lever

    is

    straight

    andupright,therearwheelshouldpoint

    direction,thewheelshouldbecloseto90

    degreestotheforwarddirection.Ifthe

    4.2 MaintenanceSchedule

    1. Lubricatechainusingappropriatelubricantafterevery5 6hoursofuseoraftereachrideif

    conditionsareespeciallywetordry.

    2. Theendsofthesteeringcablesshouldbelubricatedafterevery5 6hoursofuseorafter

    each

    ride

    if

    conditions

    are

    wet.

    If

    the

    steering

    feels

    stiff

    after

    lubrication,

    the

    cables

    may

    need

    replacingbyyourMountainTrikedealer.

    3. Toservicebearings,specialtoolsarenecessary,onlyyourMountainTrikedealershoulddo

    this.Wheel,drivetrainandpivotbearingsshouldbeservicedevery12 18monthsorwhen

    loosenessisfeltinthebearing.

    4.3 BeddinginPeriod

    WhenfirstridingtheTrikefromnew,itisimportanttounderstandthatvariouscomponentsand

    systemswillbebeddinginandwilltaketimetoreachtheirfulloperatingperformance.Asevery

    riderwillusetheirTrikedifferently,thebeddinginperiodwillvaryfrompersontoperson.

    Typicallythismayoccurafterthefirst30daysofuseorearlierifriddenhardfor35hours.

    Section1.3TheMechanicalSafetyChecksectionprovidesanexcellentguidetowhatareasto

    checkforsignsofloosenessorunintendedmovementinthesystems.Itisimportanttoperform

    thesechecksbeforeandaftereachride.

    Steeringcablescanstretchproducingloosenessinthesteeringsystem,seethesectiononsteeringin4.1foradviceonhowtocheckandadjustthecables.

    Thespokesinthewheelscansometimesstretch,requiringthewheelstobeservicedbyacapablebicycletechnician.

    Theinterfacebetweenthebrakepadsandthediscstaketimetobedin,suchthatthebrakeswontworkattheirfullpowerstraightaway.

    YourTrikewilllastlongerandserveyoubetterifyouobservetheinitialbeddinginperiodand

    cracks,deformation,corrosion,paintpeeling,dentsandanyotherindicatorsofpotential

    problems,inappropriate

    use,

    or

    abuse.

    If

    any

    abnormality

    or

    indication

    of

    aproblem

    is

    found

    the

    MountainTrikeshouldbereturnedtoanauthorisedMountainTrikedealerortoTheMountain

    TrikeCompanyLtdforfurtherchecksbeforebeingriddenagain.Theseareimportantsafety

    checksandveryimportanttohelppreventaccidents,bodilyinjurytotheriderandshortened

    usefulproductlifecycleofaMountainTrike.
