Hey Everbody, it’s Cat... I just want to say ‘Thank You’ to all our readers, writers and advertisers. Rick and I have received a lot of support to keep doing what we love by putting out this magazine each month and in this economy your enthusiasm has been a real blessing. It makes me so sad to see all the businesses that have closed their doors, and families struggling. I just hope and pray that we will all come out stronger on the other side of these challenges. We need to help each other out and keep the faith. If you think I might be able to help you with your advertising, graphic design and/or website development... call me at 770-559-3268, I am open to bartering possibilities, too. Call on me for all your marketing and advertising needs, my rates are fair and I put my whole heart into all my work. Take care, ~your friend, Cat

The Green Columnby Richard C. MacCrea,

Andrews Valley Initiative The Green Column is about our corner of the Appalachian Mountains, and how we can keep them beautiful, consume less energy, and in the process put some people to work. I write this column, but it belongs to you. To keep it interesting and current, I need your input. Know some green news, a great local project, have an idea? Please, email me. First, let me introduce you to the non profit organization I work with, the An-drews Valley Initiative. This is a group of people working together to make Andrews a great community. There are many interesting ideas we are working on, like an algae farm that produces die-sel fuel and animal feed while creating local jobs. Another idea is a large organ-ic farm with grocery chains waiting in line for produce. We want to share these ideas with the rest of our mountain re-gion. For more information see our web site: andrewsvalley.com My project is called The Greening of Andrews Valley. By greening, we mean living in ways that reduce the damage to our planet. Many believe they can-not afford to make this change. Can we lower our cost of living, create jobs, and live green? Yes! Would you pay someone to fix your home if the money you save on your electric bill would cover the cost? What if you could also get some money to help you do this? And if it made your home more comfortable? By educating the community on how living green can lower their cost of living, more people will make the change. They will see the benefit of making their buildings more energy efficient. They will hire people to do this work. And the power company can burn a little less coal every month. Did you know there are local com-panies that can help you do this? By hiring them to fix your home or office,

you would be putting your neighbor to work. Needed materials can be pur-chased locally. Their paycheck is spent in the community. As more people have their buildings upgraded, these compa-nies will hire and train more employ-ees. Here is a business model that can help our local communities right now, financed by reduced energy bills, tax incentives, and caring building owners. The Greening of Andrews Valley will be helping by educating the community and promoting the green businesses in our region. That is why we are building a web site with business contacts and plenty of articles about living green. This newspaper column is also part of our program. We have some great ideas. Would you like to be part of this? Please email me with your ideas. The next Green Column will list some of the most successful ways to reduce energy costs without spending a lot of money.

Richard C. MacCrea is the director of The Greening of Andrews Valley, a pro-gram of Andrews Valley Initiative. He works in the field of energy efficient, green building. [email protected]

Praise Your Way to a Brand New Marriage“Ugh, my hair needs cutting, and I

look fat,” I spoke to the mirror while trying to make sense of the haystack of hair floating around my head.

“Ah-hem.” My husband cleared his throat and gave me the look. You know the one that says stop what you’re doing - now. His hand on my back; he spun me around, “I think you are beautiful. I’d like you to list me five things about yourself that you like.”

Crickets chirping.

“I know you can come up with some. I’ll get you started. You have beautiful eyes.” My husband praised me and kissed my eyelids. As the rest of the morning progressed, he prodded me to list the other four. Eventually, I did. And a surprising thing hap-pened. I kept thinking about those things the rest of the day. When I glanced in the mirror, I didn’t see the glaring split ends slithering around my head, I saw the green eyes my husband pointed out.

The next morning, that sly fox made me do it again. “And you can’t list the same things as the day be-fore.” After three days of positive praise, I started feeling better about me.

The power of words is amazing. I thought about other areas of my life that could use a little praise. Since my honey and I have been teaching classes on marriage, my immediate thoughts went to my spouse. Not that I was unhappy with him, but let’s be honest, we all have moments when the desire to shoot fiery darts from our eyeballs is great.

I gave it a whirl. The next morning as I showered, I listed five things I loved about my spouse – just between me, God, and my Suave shampoo. Once again, I thought about those things all day. On my list of five were my hubby’s broad shoulders. By the time he got home, I couldn’t wait to wrap my arms around them.

The difference in my actions was evident when I greeted my husband the second day with a better-than-the-movies kiss. His eyebrows raised at least two stories, “What has gotten into you?” He ques-tioned me.

“Oh, nothing.” I told him, “Can’t I just want to kiss you?”

Praise can change your outlook on things. Some-times when we need an attitude adjustment, we

Lasting Marriage ~by Carol Hatcher

overlook the simple act of using positive words. We use them on our children when we want to direct their behavior. Why not use them in our marriage?

Maybe your marriage is struggling, or perhaps you are living in matrimonial bliss. Whichever the case, the power of praise is cheaper than a dozen roses and better than a Hallmark card in affecting your at-titude towards your other half. Why not give it a try? You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

CAROL HATCHER is a wife, mother, teacher, and writer. She and her husband, Alan, live in Buford, Georgia with their three children. Carol and Alan teach classes on marriage, as well as lead marriage conferences. To learn more visit:

You’re Unoriginal, OH!

Okay so this month the thing that has been eating away at me is the unoriginality in bands on the scene today. Particularly in the hardcore scene. It seems as though every band is using the same riffs, the same breakdowns, and the same vocal patterns. Now I’m not here to name names, even though there are cer-tain bands I would LOVE to call out. Excuse me, I mean “refer” to. Some of these bands I know personally, others I’m afraid I don’t have the pleasure of knowing. This ridiculousness has gone as far as every member having the same haircut, outfit, and even facial expressions. Face always sad and serious, hair always long and swoopy. And pants wound tighter around their legs than the strings on their guitars. All I’m saying is, “Where has the individuality gone?” Isn’t that what music is all about? Expressing yourself as an individual and not expressing yourself as what other individuals think is popular right now. It just doesn’t seem like it’s about the music anymore. I’ve seen many injustices done to the integrity of the music scene. As a touring musician it breaks my heart to see kids pay $10 a ticket for a show where they just sit outside, smoke cigarettes, and talk to their friends the whole time. (Most of the time not even about music I might add.) Now, I can understand if you want to skip out on the first band because you don’t think they’re good or if you’re hot (and it does get scorching in those venues) and want to cool off outside for a set. But when these kids are outside for literally the WHOLE time and don’t even step foot inside the door, not even for the headliner, it makes my heart ache.

All I’m saying is just play what you feel. Dress how you want

and be an individual.Personally, I would rather play a free show and have everybody inside getting involved in the music than playing a show where I make some money off of it and everyone just stays outside with their tickets in their hands. Now I’m going to have to take a few minutes out to talk about the legendary breakdown. If you don’t know what it is... it’s a part of a hardcore song where one note is played repeatedly in a chugging-like beat. I hate to say it. It’s been way too over done. I have to give you guys credit though. You’ve tried to stretch it out to its very end. You’ve tried putting chants in them, you’ve Next Page

saturated them with synth and delay soaked riffs. I mean I honestly don’t know what else you can do to spice up the breakdown. The 2 major downfalls of the breakdown though; they’re easy to play and they do get the crowd going during a live show. But most of these new bands depend of them way too much. There is nothing more you can do. Take for instance, popular hardcore band The Devil Wears Prada, has more breakdowns in their cata-logue than any other band I know. I haven’t heard one song of theirs that hasn’t had 3 to 4 different “chug” patterns in it. Think about it, they have 3 albums at an average of 10 songs a piece. That’s around 120 “chugs” for just that one band. A very influen-tial band might I add. Now I love me a good breakdown but seri-ously just cut it out. It’s been done. All I’m saying is just play what you feel. Dress how you want and be an individual. Just stop doing the same ole same ole be-cause that’s what’s popular and it’s what is going to get you bigger faster. I’m going to do something a little unorthodox here. I’m go-ing to refer to a big mainstream artist and give her praise. But do you think Lady Gaga gives two craps about what anyone thinks? NOPE! And she is blowing up right now. The beautiful thing is though, she’s actually a really talented musician who writes her songs and can play piano really well. I don’t agree with everything she does or says but you have to hand it to her for doing what she’s doing. And then there’s Kesha who is attempting what Lady Gaga is but is instead butchering music every chance she gets. So just stop caring, get out there, maybe sneak up behind a little scenester and cut their swoop off, and make music that’s weird and different. Something that has your own personal touch on it. I’ll even give you $20 if you can create some new weird sort of genre that’s not just a bunch of pointless noise. Deal? Okay, GO!

Oh and P.S. STOP USING *AUTO-TUNE ON YOUR VOICES!*Auto-Tune is a studio trick that can take a vocal and instantly nudge it onto the proper note or move it to the correct pitch. It’s like Photoshop for the human voice.

BANDS I’M LISTENING TO NOW:Attack Attack: By choosing this band this month I may have contradicted everything I just wrote. They have the breakdowns and the swoopy haircuts. BUT they did just come out with a new album that totally redeems them from their last. It really stands out and it brings in a little of the poppier sounds with the heavier. So check ‘em out and let me know what you think.
