Hi Parents

What an exciting month for MTP students and staff. We have been very busy in and out of the school.

On Feb. 17 we participated along with 6000 other VSB students in the annual Acceptance Day Dance held at the Giants hockey game. It was emotional watching as thousands of students sent the message of Ac-ceptance for all people. We have been practicing the Flash Mob for the last several months, but to see the arena fill with pink and the positive use of multimedia to unite the students had a powerful impact on all who were there. The video was released on Anti-Bullying day Feb. 24. See the link below for the YouTube clip of the event.

Student Leadership Continues at MTP

The beginning of February saw a new program launched at MTP, our Student Reading Tutor Program.

This program has equipped about 15 grade 6/7 students with skills to coach beginning readers. They

are able to discuss word chunks, syllables, matching letter and picture clues, as well as asking compre-

hension questions about details, main ideas, opinions and hidden or inferred meaning. They will be

reading with selected Gr 2 and 3 readers at 9am on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings for

about 25 minutes. The inspiration for this program came from a Professional Development (Pro-D)

conference that Mr. Mulligan attended in the fall, which reminds us that Pro-D is more than just a day

off for students! We are very proud of our student leaders and the positive role they play in our

school. Thanks Grade 6/7!

Ms. Feng for being the teacher sponsor

for the Mar. 3 movie night

VSB Needs Your Input

The Vancouver School Board is looking to all

their stakeholder groups for input into going

forward with their Long Range Facilities Plan.

They have created two links on their “new”

website to provide staff, students, parents and

community members with information and an

opportunity to give ideas and feedback.

How First Nations Do Songs

The Nation gathers at a Pow Wow.

Then they put paint on their suits

that they sewed, then it looks nice.

The people hold hands and they

dance. There is First Nations mu-

sic. Some people tap their toes.

Some people play drums and oth-

ers play ukulele. Have you ever

played an instrument with First Na-

tions people?
